Will this Ashes be the making of Bazball 2.0?

England’s attack-at-all-costs philosophy needed to adapt, and it has. How will it acquit itself against the acid test that Australia will throw at it?

Greg Chappell18-Nov-2025The Ashes in Australia has always served as Test cricket’s most unforgiving crucible, and for England, the coming series offers the ultimate stress test. Under the stewardship of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, they have undergone a profound psychological and stylistic shift. The name “Bazball” came about informally, coined by ESPNcricinfo’s UK editor Andrew Miller in the summer of 2022, shortly after McCullum was appointed head coach alongside new captain Stokes. McCullum, a naturally aggressive player, and Stokes, a captain defined by his proactive approach, provided the perfect psychological environment for this new style to flourish. The philosophy, at its heart, was about giving players mental freedom and eliminating the fear of failure. It was intended to import the fearless, results-oriented methodology of short-form cricket into the five-day game, resulting in an unprecedented run rate of 4.8 per over until mid-2023. Bazball must now mature if it is to succeed against the pace, bounce, and the Australian milieu.Related

  • Duckett: England evolving from being 'entertaining, reckless at times'

This proactive style yielded immediate, sensational outcomes in England. It was liberating for a team that had long struggled. They transitioned from a dismal 6% win rate in the 17 Tests prior to the regime change to a robust 61% success rate overall since. The highs were dramatic, epitomised by a run of record-breaking fourth-innings chases in 2022, where England successfully hunted down four targets of 275-plus, including a monumental 378 runs against India. Their bold declaration against Pakistan in Rawalpindi later that year, giving the hosts a tempting target of 343 runs that eventually led to a memorable 74-run England victory, was immediately hailed as proof of the positive, find-a-way-to-win mentality. However, a deeper analysis reveals a stark geographical dependence that exposes the limits of Bazball 1.0. England’s win rate at home starting with the 2022 summer has been 68%, but away, this figure is 50% – a 26% gap that suggests the revolution is dependent on neutered designer pitches. This statistical difference is directly linked to the environmental context of English cricket. The home success of Bazball has hinged on wickets deliberately prepared to be flatter and more benign than traditional English seaming Test pitches. Stokes explicitly requested fast and flat pitches upon assuming the captaincy, leading to surfaces that minimised the lateral movement that once defined the challenge of playing in England. James Anderson, the master of seam and swing, publicly lamented that the Edgbaston pitch for the 2023 Ashes Test was “like kryptonite” for him, confirming the conditions were hostile to traditional seam-bowling skills.Furthermore, the shorter boundaries at many English Test grounds, which are exempt from strict minimum-size rules, fundamentally mitigate the risk inherent in frenetic batting. An aggressive horizontal-bat shot that clears a short square boundary in England might be caught easily on the expansive fields of Australia.9:19

How should England line up for the first Test?

The inevitable consequences of this high-risk strategy, when those environmental cushions are removed, are spectacular collapses. The team’s rapid implosion against India in Rajkot, where a strong position of 224 for 2 turned into 319 all out, and the stunning eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka at home – labelled by some as the worst batting of the Bazball era – serve as stark reminders of the volatility inherent in the approach. Bazball cannot become an excuse to avoid doing the hard yards that Test cricket demands. The key narrative heading into this Ashes series is that England have learnt this lesson and are now moving away from the unbridled, all-out assault of Bazball 1.0.England opener Ben Duckett, a key beneficiary of the aggressive approach, who has averaged 49 (with a strike rate of 87) in home Tests, recently confirmed that the side is evolving from being “entertaining, reckless at times”. Instead, the focus is on a strategic maturation: “reading moments”. Duckett cited the need to “just get through it” when facing five difficult overs at the end of a day, prioritising survival so as to be present the next morning rather than seeking runs at all costs. This subtle, but critical, evolution has not gone unnoticed by the opposition. Australia spinner Nathan Lyon observed that England are now “thinking about ways to win games, not being totally reckless”, while Steve Smith has said England have started to play the situation. This shift, from “reckless entertainment” to disciplined, high-intent positivity – marks the necessary birth of Bazball 2.0.The Australian challenge will be severe. The pitches, starting with the pace and true bounce of Perth, are ideal for an even contest between bat and ball. These are surfaces that reward discipline and sound judgement. While Australia have suffered the loss of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood to injury for the opening Test, their veteran pace unit remains skilful enough to punish reckless batting. The core of the attack – Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and the indefatigable Lyon – are key parts of one of the most enduringly successful bowling units in history. Hazlewood’s loss, on top of that of Cummins, is disappointing for the sake of the series. Hazlewood is arguably the most dangerous bowler against batters bearing a purely aggressive mindset. His absence in Perth will be dispiriting for Australia and noticeable.7:41

What can we expect from Harry Brook on his first Ashes tour?

The outcome of this series will pivot on how England’s top order navigates the conditions in Perth and Brisbane.Zak Crawley has been persevered with specifically because he is seen as someone who will flourish on the bouncy wickets with his stand-and-deliver methods. However, he will need immense discretion; attempting to drive too freely on the up against the extra bounce on Australian wickets will see him nick off regularly. Duckett, while he has bloomed in the Bazball era, will find that partnerships become more important than explosive starts, demanding he focus on absorbing pressure as much as on scoring quickly.Meanwhile Ollie Pope, who often seems to be under constant pressure to hold his spot, will need a strong showing in the first two Tests. Should he fail to score significant runs, the calls for the exciting but unproven young talent Jacob Bethell to replace him will inevitably grow louder.Joe Root remains the established star, a bedrock of consistency whom the others will lean on. Harry Brook, the cricket meteor on the rise, is arguably England’s greatest batting prospect. With his minimal movement at the crease and ability to use the angle of the delivery, he reminds me of a young Sachin Tendulkar. Brook’s record is similar (better, in fact) to Tendulkar’s at the same stage of his career. If this burgeoning superstar can adapt quickly to the conditions and temper his ambition with discretion, he could cement his reputation as a world-class talent. Jamie Smith is another exciting batter but one who needs to forget his recent poor New Zealand form. The England team that takes the field in Australia will still be upbeat. We should not expect to see their unbridled early days of Bazball 1.0 again. What we should expect, however, is a fiercely competitive bunch who have finally matured into a tough, aggressive, and calculating unit. Their success will not be measured by run rate but by their willingness to buckle down and undertake the hard work that is required in the demanding conditions of Australia. With the loss of Cummins and Hazlewood for Perth, the balance has shifted inexorably towards England.

Cristiano Ronaldo gets special mention from U.S. President Donald Trump in White House dinner speech as Al-Nassr superstar attends black tie event alongside fiancée Georgina Rodriguez and Saudi Crown Prince – and takes selfie with Elon Musk

At an extravagant White House state dinner honouring Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), U.S. President Donald Trump announced the presence of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Acknowledging his youngest son Barron's admiration for the Al-Nassr and Portugal striker, Trump joked that the meeting had increased his son’s respect for him. Ronaldo was joined at the black-tie event by his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez, and they both posed for a selfie with Elon Musk at one stage.

  • Superstar guests at White House event

Ronaldo attended the high-profile event alongside a host of world business and technology leaders, including Tesla and X boss Musk. The black-tie affair was organised to deepen ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, and it was Ronaldo's first known appearance on American soil since 2016. His attendance with the Saudi delegation highlights his role as a public face for the kingdom's recent diplomatic and sports investments. Trump began the dinner with a speech, recognizing the gathering of "unbelievable dignitaries" such as FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a number of billionaires, and prominent business leaders.

The United States are joint-hosts of next year’s World Cup, alongside Canada and Mexico, and Portugal qualified for the event earlier this week without CR7, who sat their final game against Armenia out through suspension following his first-ever international red card during the qualifier with the Republic of Ireland. However, Trump still singled out Ronaldo with a special tribute in his speech.

Growing friendship between Ronaldo and Trump

Ronaldo recently interacted with the President, sending him a signed jersey with the inscription, "To President Donald J. Trump, Playing for Peace". The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star said at the time: "He is one of the guys who can help to change the world. One of the most important guys is the U.S. President. If we can help each other to make this happen… He is one of the guys I wish to meet to sit and have a nice talk. World Cup worry for Portugal

Ronaldo was among the first to congratulate Portugal on their World Cup qualification after seeing his international colleagues complete a nine-goal rout of Armenia and will get to grace yet another major international tournament. Portugal boss Roberto Martinez faces missing his talisman for their World Cup opener when the tournament kicks off next June, because Ronaldo still has two games left to serve of his suspension for elbowing an opponent, but an appeal will reportedly be launched.

Martinez said: "After the game it’s a difficult time because emotions can be unclear. I saw his reaction to a provocation. It started at the beginning of the game, in every play in the penalty area. It even started the day before in the press conference. And it was a reaction of trying to continue playing. Others might fall to the ground and look for a penalty. It’s not a violent action, it’s not a red card for violence, but a reaction to a provocation. We need to try to show the case and prepare well. I would say it would be very unfair to impose a long suspension."

Ronaldo has already made it very clear that, at the age of 41, the 2026 World Cup will be his last.

Lionel Messi returns to Camp Nou! Argentina icon sends hugely emotional message to Barcelona fans after making secret visit to under-construction stadium and hints at long-awaited reunion

Lionel Messi has sent an emotional message to Barcelona fans after making a secret return to Camp Nou. The Argentine superstar severed career-long ties with the Catalan giants in 2021, but has made no secret of his desire to retrace steps to familiar surroundings at some stage. He has been back in the city during a break from MLS duties with Inter Miami, allowing him to take in upgrades to the iconic stadium.

  • Tears flowed: Messi severed ties with Barca in 2021

Messi was left in tears when bidding farewell to Barca, with it becoming clear that financial troubles would make a contract extension for the Argentine GOAT impossible. With free agency being reached, he took on a new challenge in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

More major honours were collected there, alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but the Messi family – including wife Antonela and their three sons – struggled to settle in Paris. As a result, the American dream was chased when David Beckham and Inter Miami came calling in 2023.

  • Messi hints at Barcelona return in some capacity

Messi has taken his record-shattering haul of Ballons d’Or to eight – having become a World Cup winner – and is up to 46 major trophies as the most decorated player in history. A couple of those – Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield crowns – have been captured in the United States.

While happy in South Florida, Messi has seen a return to Camp Nou speculated on. It appears unlikely that that path will be trodden as a player, having signed a new contract in Miami, but a directorial or ambassadorial post may open up in the future. For now, he has enjoyed wandering around at empty venue that is being given a serious facelift.

Messi posted on Instagram after taking to a field that he once illuminated: “Last night I returned to a place I miss with my soul. A place where I was immensely happy, where you guys made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world. I hope one day I can come back, and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I never got to…”

  • Friendly or exhibition: Will Messi play at Camp Nou again?

Inter Miami have vowed to do all they can to make a farewell appearance for Messi in Catalonia possible. Club president Jorge Mas has said: “Messi's departure from Barcelona was not to his liking, he could not say goodbye to his club that welcomed him as a child, and I think the circumstances were not what Lionel wanted. I gave him my commitment that I will do everything possible in the coming years to give him the opportunity to say goodbye to his fans in Barcelona. Inter Miami will go or we will do some kind of match.”

While a friendly could be lined up, Barca have explored the option of bringing their prodigal son back for an exhibition contest that would mark the grand reopening of Camp Nou. Scheduling issues posed a problem at one stage, but that venue is still not ready to welcome supporters through its doors once more. Messi could, therefore, reach the end of the 2025 MLS campaign before returning to Europe again.

Messi contract: Immediate future at Inter Miami

Barca president Joan Laporta, who once hinted at trying to bring Messi back in a playing capacity, has stated on a regular basis that the Blaugrana are looking to organise a match that Messi can grace. His latest comments on that subject were: “What we hope is that he can be given the great tribute he deserves.”

Messi is now tied to a deal at Inter Miami through 2028, which will take him beyond his 40th birthday. He will also be turning out at a new stadium there, with the Herons in the process of constructing a purpose-built ground that should be ready for the start of the 2026 campaign.

Javier Mascherano’s side will be hoping to move in there as defending MLS Cup champions. More magic from Messi has kept them in the hunt for play-off glory this season, with the Argentine up to 42 goals as he prepares for the Conference semi-finals. A pitstop in Barcelona has been made before attention turns to a clash with Cincinnati.

Urvil Patel waits for big break after smashing Pant's record

The Gujarat keeper-batter now has the world record for the second-fastest T20 century and the Indian record for the second-fastest List A century

Hemant Brar29-Nov-2024Urvil Patel’s father, Mukesh, was more disheartened than his son when he went unsold at the recent IPL 2025 mega auction. In his younger days, Patel senior was a university-level sprinter. But the lack of resources and guidance meant he had to give up on his ambitions and settle for the job of a physical education teacher at a government school. Since then, his dream has been to see his son excel in a sport at the highest level.Urvil, a wicketkeeper-opener from Gujarat, has been part of the IPL previously. At the 2023 auction, Gujarat Titans (GT) bought him at his base price of INR 20 lakh. But he did not get to play and was released after the season. This time, his name did not even come up. His father’s disappointment, therefore, was understandable.Urvil, too, was upset. But he did not let it affect his game. In Gujarat’s first outing after the auction, against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Urvil smashed the second-fastest hundred in T20 cricket, off just 28 balls. It was the fastest by an Indian, bettering Rishabh Pant’s record against Himachal Pradesh by four balls, and just one shy of the world record, set by Sahil Chauhan for Estonia against Cyprus.Urvil’s 113 not out in 35 balls helped Gujarat chase down their target of 156 in just 10.2 overs. His innings featured 12 sixes, four of them off successive balls against Mandeep Singh’s part-time all-sorts spin.

After the match, he called his father. “I told him this hundred was for him,” Urvil tells ESPNcricinfo. “I am very close to my father. He has made a lot of sacrifices for my career. He would wake up at 4am to take me for the practice. He used to give tuition to class 11 and 12 students; he stopped that to give me more time.”This was not the first time Urvil did something extraordinary after a setback. Exactly a year ago, a day after being released by GT, he had smashed a 41-ball hundred against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. It was the second-fastest List A hundred by an Indian, behind Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball effort for Baroda against Maharashtra in 2010.Related

Baroda's 349 for 5 breaks world record for highest T20 total

Urvil Patel hits second-fastest T20 ton, fastest by an Indian

Was there extra motivation to prove a point on both occasions?”Nothing like that,” he says with a smile. “When you are in the middle, there is so much pressure you don’t even remember such things.”It is true that both knocks came against weaker oppositions. But Urvil can take apart even the best bowling attacks on his day. In the next two games after his hundred against Arunachal Pradesh, he scored 86 in 83 balls against Uttar Pradesh and 116 in 93 against Himachal Pradesh.

****

Urvil was born in Vadnagar but started his cricket in Palanpur, a northern Gujarat city known for its diamonds. Under the coaching of Prakash Patani, he polished his talent and has emerged as the brightest gem from the region. He made his T20 debut for Baroda, in 2017-18, and scored 50 in 28 balls against Mumbai. But after just one season with them, he decided to move to Gujarat.”There was nothing wrong at Baroda,” Urvil says. “I just felt I would get more opportunities with Gujarat. At the same time, I was aware I needed to perform.”

“My goal is always to take one step forward from where I am today. For that, whatever runs I need to score, I need to score. Whatever skills I need to upgrade, I need to upgrade”

So far, he has played 45 T20s and has scored 1014 runs at a strike rate of 161.72. His numbers in List A cricket are equally impressive: 415 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 111.26. Though he has also played six first-class games, his priority remains white-ball cricket: “Power-hitting comes naturally to me.”Apart from that, Urvil’s big strength is his self-belief. “T20 is such a format that you to take risks. The most important thing then is to stay calm and back yourself.”While he did not play a game at IPL 2023, he picked up valuable lessons from everything around him. He observed how professionally Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan went about their work, both in the nets and on the field. The technical inputs – about wicketkeeping – came from Wriddhiman Saha.”I got to spend a lot of time with Wriddhi . He made me aware of the areas I could improve in. We discussed about the movement behind the stumps, which really helped me.”Whenever he needs extra motivation, he recalls why he started playing cricket: for his father. His ultimate dream, like any budding cricketer, is to represent India, but he is not looking too far ahead.”My goal is always to take one step forward from where I am today. For that, whatever runs I need to score, I need to score. Whatever skills I need to upgrade, I need to upgrade.”

'Probably the signing of the season!' – Wayne Rooney lauds surprising name as the best new recruit of 2025-26 so far

Wayne Rooney has hailed Granit Xhaka as "probably the signing of the season" after the veteran midfielder's remarkable influence on Sunderland's stunning Premier League return. The 33-year-old Swiss star has been pivotal in the newly promoted side's rise to fourth place, guiding a young squad with leadership, consistency, and class since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Xhaka raises the bar at Sunderland

Xhaka’s move to Sunderland last July raised eyebrows across the football world, but four months into the 2025-26 campaign, the decision is proving to be an inspired one. The former Arsenal midfielder has been central to the Black Cats’ superb start, as the newly promoted side sit fourth in the Premier League table after 11 matches — just one point off the top three. Sunderland’s success has been built around Xhaka’s composure and control in midfield, as he’s started and completed every league game under head coach Regis Le Bris.

The Swiss international has contributed one goal and three assists, but his impact extends far beyond the statistics. He leads the team in almost every key metric — from assists and chances created to successful passes, duels won, and distance covered — underscoring his indispensable role in the squad. As captain, Xhaka has provided structure and stability for a youthful Sunderland side adapting to the top flight for the first time since 2017.

His performances have not only silenced the sceptics who questioned whether he could still perform in the Premier League at 33, but also earned him widespread praise from pundits and now, from a Premier League legend in Rooney.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportRooney labels Xhaka as the 'signing of the season'

Manchester United and Premier League legend Rooney was full of admiration for Xhaka's impact, declaring him the standout signing of the season so far. Speaking on BBC's, he said: "Coming back to the Premier League you wonder if he can do it. Obviously, with a promoted team as well coming up, what impact could he have? But he's probably been the signing of the season. He has been brilliant."

Rooney went on to highlight the midfielder's resilience, referencing his turbulent years at Arsenal: "When he had the situation with Arsenal, when he fell out with the fans it showed his character to go and play for Arsenal again. To get through that and then go and perform for Arsenal, and then at Leverkusen to be part of a team to beat Bayern Munich to the title for the first time in over 10 years has shown what a good player he is."

He also praised Xhaka's off-field influence, particularly in a youthful Sunderland dressing room: "Sunderland have got a very young squad as well. He'd almost be like a father figure and he'll be a big help for the coach as well to be the in-between man as captain. And they made a lot of signings in the summer, he'll be a massive help for the manager and with them players, for sure, using his experience."

Xhaka's return to England boosts his Premier League legacy

Xhaka's story at Sunderland represents one of the most compelling Premier League narratives of the season. Having joined in a reported £17 million deal from Bayer Leverkusen – where he helped secure the club's first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024 – the Swiss international arrived in the North East with both experience and expectation on his shoulders. Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris immediately installed him as captain, recognising the leadership qualities that had defined his later years at Arsenal and Leverkusen.

Since his debut, Xhaka has personified professionalism and tactical intelligence, seamlessly adapting to Sunderland's fluid 4-3-3 setup. His calmness in possession, positional awareness, and vocal authority have provided a foundation for the team's compact defensive structure and disciplined build-up play. Statistically, his influence is unmatched – ranking first in touches, chances created, and recoveries per game – metrics that underline how deeply integrated he is in every phase of Sunderland's approach.

The turnaround in Xhaka's career is particularly impressive given the criticism he faced during his time at Arsenal. Once viewed as a divisive figure, he has evolved into one of Europe's most respected midfield generals. His experience at Leverkusen, where he rediscovered his form under Xabi Alonso, has clearly carried over to his new challenge, allowing Sunderland's youthful lineup to flourish around him.

With Sunderland flying high in the Premier League, the focus now turns to maintaining their momentum through the winter months. After the international break, the Black Cats will take on Fulham and Bournemouth, before facing off against true giants in Liverpool and Manchester City. Those two games, similar to their draw against Arsenal, will truly test Le Bris' side as to whether they can maintain their early form and actually challenge for European spots this season.

Xhaka himself has shown no signs of slowing down, continuing to set the tone both in training and on matchdays. His experience across top European leagues has given Sunderland a competitive edge and an identity built on discipline and confidence, qualities that resonate throughout their squad.

Middleton, Weatherley lay foundation for Hampshire

Hampshire 146 for 2 (Middleton 79, Weatherley 62) vs Worcestershire Worcestershire struck two late blows after Hampshire’s batters had laid a solid foundation on a truncated first day of their Rothesay County Championship match at Visit Worcestershire New Road.Hampshire, in search of their first championship victory since mid-May, closed on 146 for two having reached 127 without loss before losing openers Fletcha Middleton (79, 101 balls) and Joe Weatherley (62, 130) in a late burst of play in poor light. They were blows badly needed by Worcestershire, bottom of Division One and desperate for a win to sustain their slender hopes of survival. After a wet outfield prevented play before lunch, the home side chose to bowl in conditions still damp from morning rain, but the assistance for the seamers they hoped for did not materialise. Pakistan pace spearhead Khurram Shahzad was expensive as Weatherley and Middleton put 50 on the board by the 14th over. The Winchester-born openers, perhaps inspired by the adjacence of a cathedral, were little troubled by a Worcestershire attack bruised by last week’s heartbreaking defeat to neighbours Warwickshire. Having dominated the first half of the match at Edgbaston, the Pears suffered a devastating defeat as Warwickshire chased down 393 on the last day.Back on home turf, the Worcestershire attack, with Matthew Waite returning from paternity leave in place of Sussex loanee Bertie Foreman, again toiled. Middleton hurried to his half-century from 51 balls and Weatherley followed to his from 103.The openers were looking forward to a productive evening session only for the rain to return during the tea interval and prevent play until a late resumption at 6pm. Hampshire’s openers ventured back out with little to gain and everything to lose – and the home side took advantage of the murky, moist conditions. Middleton edged Tom Taylor to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick, who took a superb catch in front of first slip, and Weatherly edged Ben Allison to Ethan Brookes at second slip. The wickets were an unwelcome postscript to a hitherto excellent day for Hampshire but they have still set down a solid platform from which to push for a victory that would lift them away from the relegation zone – and pretty much sentence Worcestershire to end the season in it.

Nuno already has Paqueta's perfect replacement in "KDB-type" West Ham star

Without being guilty of stating the obvious, it’s not a great time to be a West Ham United fan at the moment.

The team looked terrible under Graham Potter at the start of the season, and apart from a brief moment against Everton, they’ve not looked much better under Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Portuguese coach has a tough job on his hands to get the Hammers out of the relegation zone, and things have only just got more complicated.

It now seems that Lucas Paqueta wants to leave the club, although his departure wouldn’t be ideal, West Ham appear to have a player who could step into his shoes.

Latest on Lucas Paqueta's West Ham future

As if Nuno’s task to keep West Ham in the Premier League wasn’t already challenging enough, it now seems that the incredibly talented Paqueta wants to jump ship in the winter window.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

At least, that is according to a recent report from the Times, which claims that, despite a move to Aston Villa not materialising in the summer, the Brazilian ace is still keen to leave the East Londoners as soon as possible.

It is unclear just how much money it would take for the Irons to sell, but given his desire to leave, underwhelming performances and the fact that there are less than two years left on his £150k-per-week contract, it seems unlikely they’ll make a profit on the £51m they paid Lyon for him in 2022.

However, while losing the Paquetá-born midfielder would be far from ideal, it might not be the nail in the club’s Premier League coffin that many might spin it as.

After all, even though his talent is undeniable, has the 28-year-old star actually been as effective for the club as fans hoped he would be when he first joined?

Well, across his 130 appearances for the Irons, the former Lyon ace has scored 21 goals and provided 14 assists, which works out to a decent but unspectacular average of a goal involvement every 3.71 games.

Moreover, last season saw him score just five goals in 35 games, of which two were penalties, meaning he averaged a non-penalty goal every 11.66 games, which isn’t good enough for someone meant to be a team’s talismanic number ten.

In short, while the best situation would be one in which Nuno could get the best back out of Paqueta, losing him in the winter might not be as bad as some would have you believe, as he’s barely contributed to the team for over a year now.

Moreover, West Ham already have a creative gem who could potentially prove to be a brilliant replacement in the long run.

West Ham's Paqueta replacement

While there are undoubtedly other ways in which Nuno and West Ham could approach a Paqueta-less side, perhaps the best would be to use Mateus Fernandes.

The former Southampton star joined the club for around £40m in the summer, and while he’s spent more time in central midfield since then, he’s no stranger to playing further up the pitch.

For example, during his time with the Saints, the “exceptional” Portuguese ace, as dubbed by analyst Mattinson, made 21 appearances in attacking midfield.

Moreover, despite playing for a team that were relegated and, for some time, looked in danger of breaking Derby County’s most unwanted record, the 21-year-old still produced six goal involvements in 36 league games.

For comparison’s sake, Paqueta scored just four goals in 34 league games.

Finally, on top of possessing the ability to play “those KDB-type passes,” as Mattinson puts it, the former Southampton ace is also happy to help out all over the pitch, as his underlying numbers show.

According to FBref, he ranked in the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League last season for percentage of aerial duels won, the top 5% for tackles and ball recoveries, the top 11% for long passes attempted and completed and the top 14% for passes into the final third, all per 90.

Ultimately, in an ideal world, West Ham would keep hold of Paqueta and help him get back to his best this season.

However, if he really is to leave in the winter, then fans should not worry too much, as Fernandes could step in and step up.

West Ham brewing Noble 2.0 who knows "what it means to wear the shirt"

The academy product might be able to add some much-needed fight and heart back into Nuno’s West Ham side.

Sophie Devine shines with bat and ball to lead Brave win

Danni Wyatt-Hodge fifty sets hosts up for success

ECB Media10-Aug-2025Southern Brave made it two from two in this year’s competition, as Sophie Devine starred in a 15-run victory over Birmingham Phoenix in front of a record crowd at Utilita Bowl.A crowd of 11,167 turned out in the Hampshire sunshine to see the home side prevail in a game which see-sawed throughout but was ultimately decided by the regular wickets Brave took throughout the Phoenix run chase. Both teams came into today’s game off the back of strong opening wins, with Phoenix winning the toss and opting to field. Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s 59 from 39 balls was the foundation for the Brave’s total of 139, ably supported by Laura Wolvaardt (28) and Devine (27).After a good start from Brave, Phoenix came back into the first innings, restraining the home side in the last 25 balls. At one stage, a big score was on the cards but, led by Megan Schutt (2 for 23 from 20 balls) and then Em Arlott (2 for 19 from 20 balls) at the death, Brave faltered to 139 with only 19 coming from the last 15 balls.Southern Brave took the early wickers of Emma Lamb and Georgia Voll, both of whom had done well in the Phoenix’s first game. Ellyse Perry and Amy Jones then steadied the ship and looked comfortable in their efforts to knock off the total. When Jones was out for 20, Sterre Kalis took over the charge to the finish, with Phoenix needing 45 from the final 30 balls. However, when Perry was caught well in the deep by Mady Villiers for 26 from 21 balls, Kalis accelerated but ultimately ran out of support, and Phoenix were bowled out with two balls to spare, 15 short. The Brave bowling performance was headlined by Lauren Bell taking 3 for 17 from 19 balls, with Devine’s 2 for 28 and Tilly Corteen-Coleman’s 2 for 16 also doing damage. With her 27 runs, two wickets and a run out, Devine, the Meerkat Match Hero said: “I’m really pleased about the result. Danni (Wyatt-Hodge) was outstanding. The way she set up the game, it was trickier than she made it look. It was a great game for us and nice to do it in front of the home crowd.”It is always nice to perform against teams you have previously played for. Every game is on the line and you have to be good. We have to keep sharp and keep learning. I have not played a lot of cricket over the last few months and was probably swinging like a rusty gate. I’ve played enough cricket to know that it will come. When you have someone like her (Wyatt-Hodge), it makes easier. If I can contribute in any way, that is what I am here for.”
