Former Arsenal and Aston Villa forward Merson expects United head coach Amorim to hand in his resignation if the Portuguese's men fail to beat Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday. The pundit also made a comparison with former manager Ten Hag while speaking about the state of the Red Devils, highlighting the Dutchman's penchant for picking up a few wins before a long streak of disappointing results, and claimed that could become the case under Amorim should he continue at Old Trafford.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amorim's job at the Theatre of Dreams has come under increased scrutiny following United's shock Carabao Cup exit thanks to a defeat against fourth-tier side Grismby Town on penalties earlier this week. Having taken over from Ten Hag midway in the 2024-25 season, Amorim could only guide the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish in the league.

Backed with an investment of over £200 million (€231m/$270m), which includes the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, the notion was that United would spring back to life after a full pre-season under Amorim. Positive results over the summer generated excitement but it has been a less than ideal start to the season for the ex-Sporting CP boss. United are winless after their opening two league games and the defeat to Grismby only piled on to the misery.

Now, reports claim the United dressing room feels Amorim could resign as head coach in the near future, despite the higher-ups at the club apparently backing him. Merson, too, believes Amorim won't stick around and could depart if things don't go well against Burnley on Saturday.

  • WHAT MERSON SAID

Speaking on , Merson said: “I will be shocked if he’s still in charge if Man Utd don’t beat Burnley. But they will beat Burnley! It’s a nice game.

"Ten Hag had that as well: the three or four games without a win, and then second-bottom of the league came. They just won that game and then lost three or four games again. It’s just going to keep on covering the cracks. They will be called Pollyfilla United!

“I don’t think Amorim will be shy to go: I’ve had enough. I can’t do anything. I’ve done what I can. I don’t think he is one to put himself through pain to get his payoff. I don’t know the man, but coming across, I think he’s an honest man and will be honest with himself. But I think they will beat Burnley.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM?

All eyes will be on Amorim and his troops on Saturday as United try to pick up their first Premier League win of the new season. Patience among fans has already started to wear thin after a slow start and anything less than a victory against Burnley will put Amorim's future under increased scrutiny.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bardghji and Rashford are two of the three players Barcelona signed this season, along with goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The former Copenhagen sensation was signed for just €3 million on a deal until 2029. On the other hand, Rashford was signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United after the club failed in their pursuits of Nico Williams and Luiz Diaz. While the Englishman has featured in all three games for Barca this season, Bardghji is yet to make his debut for his new side.

  • WHAT ROONY BARDGHJI SAID

Speaking to the teenage attacker was asked to confirm reports from Spain that stated that his best mates are Marc Casado and Rashford. He said: "Yes, that's true, but I'm friends with everyone. It's a fantastic group. It's like a family – something I haven't felt before in other teams – where everyone is really close to each other. Many of them have grown up and played together since youth football. It's not really a group of friends that you're with all the time, but everyone is with everyone.

"But in the beginning there was a lot with Rashford because we were new. I had played against him before and we lived in the same hotel. We lived next door to each other in the hotel so it was automatic that you got closer to him."

"Well, he's nice. Very laid back and calm person. Doesn't say much."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ROONY BARDGHJI?

The Swede will be hoping to make his debut after the international break. His registration with the first team could not be completed before the deadline, with the youngster registered with Barca Atletic, the reserve team, instead. He will still be able to receive call-ups from head coach Hansi Flick, as it is expected that he will stay involved in the first-team dynamics.

> Confira a tabela do Brasileirão-2023 clicando aqui

Nós somos o time do amor e o time da virada – disse o treinador após a final no Allianz Parque.

>Abel fala de ‘cutucada’ no elenco e revela papo com Menino: ‘Ele se empolga’

A virada aconteceu.

Lucas Paqueta acquittal sees FA slammed for 'obvious flaw' in spot-fixing case against West Ham & Brazil star

The FA did not provide an independent assessment during Lucas Paqueta's spot-fixing case, claims an extensive report after the Brazilian was acquitted.

'Obvious flaw' in case claims reportHeavy criticism of FAPaqueta was cleared of the chargesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

As reported by , a 'damning' 314-page report has been submitted by the commission which looked into Paqueta's case after the West Ham star was charged with four counts of spot-fixing in May 2024, nearly a year after investigations into the charges began. The Brazil international has since been cleared of all charges but the controversy may not yet be over. The report claims that the FA's failure to provide an independent assessment of the betting data involved was an "obvious flaw".

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The report also claims that the FA contradicted the statements of its main witness, FA betting integrity investigator Tom Astley, leading the commission to believe that the FA "was not altogether certain what case it was presenting against the player".

The charges claimed that Paqueta deliberately picked up a yellow card in four Premier League matches between November 2022 and August 2023 for the financial gain of loved ones back in Brazil – charges that the 28-year-old was acquitted of. It is understood that the FA are not planning to appeal the verdict.

WHAT THE COMMISSION SAID

The commission's report continued: “The commission wishes to record its surprise that at the investigation stage of what were clearly serious matters… the FA were apparently not interested in what the player had to say, notwithstanding his stance, taken on advice, in the first interview."

Nick De Marco KC, who represented Paqueta, claimed on X that the report was “understood to be the longest sports-related judgment ever issued in the world, a reflection of how serious the case was, and the amount of evidence deployed in the biggest case in the FA’s history”.

It is not known whether Paqueta or the outcome of the legal procedure will be impacted by the commission's report. Considering the evidence presented during the hearings, which pointed towards the verdict of the player's innocence, it is more likely that the document aims to target the FA and its approach to such cases in the future. Nevertheless, it will not be pleasant reading for Paqueta or his family to see such criticism of a situation where his career was on the line.

Promotion and relegation set to return to Liga MX for the 2026-27 season, Court of Arbitration for Sport confirms

The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the appeal from Expansion League clubs seeking to reinstate the system a year earlier

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled against an appeal filed by several Liga de Expansión clubs pushing for promotion and relegation to resume in 2026. Instead, the mechanism will return as originally scheduled for the 2026-27 Liga MX season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While their attempt to accelerate the timeline failed, Expansion League sides can at least take solace in CAS reaffirming that the reinstatement of movement between divisions is mandatory once the original six-year suspension expires. That said, any club aspiring to climb into the top flight will still have to meet strict certification requirements – criteria that could prove a stumbling block for several organizations.

WHAT COURT OF ARBITRATION FOR SPORT SAID

In a statement, CAS clarified that “the arbitral panel confirmed that the affected sporting seasons were precisely those mentioned in the Mexican Football Federation’s (FMF) decision of April 29, 2025, with the final one being 2025-26.”

The ruling effectively backs the FMF’s initial resolution from April 2020, which froze promotion and relegation for six years due to the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    DID YOU KNOW?

The case was initially brought forward by 10 Expansion League clubs, though four – Atlante, Cimarrones de Sonora, Alebrijes de Oaxaca, and Jaiba Brava – later withdrew. The process continued with six teams: Atlético La Paz, Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, Mineros de Zacatecas, Venados FC, and Leones Negros of UdeG. According to reports, the clubs involved in the lawsuit were threatened by the FMF with the withdrawal of the monthly subsidy of $100,000 they currently receive.

'I want to win matches the Dinesh Karthik way'

The Kolkata Knight Riders captain talks about leadership in T20, and developing his own methods to succeed

Interview by Nagraj Gollapudi03-May-2018What is the best thing about being in charge of a franchise that is successful?
Responsibility. And with responsibility comes a lot of happiness if you look in the right direction: the joy of seeing a lot of young guys perform well, the joy of allowing the senior players to be their own selves. The owners and the coaches have given me absolute freedom and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of this team till now, touch wood. Were you surprised when the offer came?
From the team they had picked, I wasn’t too surprised. Venky Mysore [Kolkata Knight Riders CEO] called me up and said that they were looking at me leading the team. I knew I would be a leader of some sort, because I am a senior pro. Maybe a vice-captain or a captain – I was expecting that at some stage. There were not many senior India players in the squad so I was expecting it.How did you react?
I was all guns blazing. I was like, “Yes, wow!”  Because it is a great opportunity for me, where I stand in my life, it is something important and [something] I would love to do.What things were you clear about wanting when you took up the captaincy?
We had a good, long discussion, me and Venky. More than me bringing a certain way of what and how I do things, I thought it was important to hear him out in terms of what the culture at Knight Riders is. Gautam Gambhir led the franchise for seven years and he left a big legacy.

*Stats up to May 2, 2018There have been a few successful wicketkeeper-captains in the IPL. MS Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist are the prominent ones. What advantage do wicketkeeper-captains have?
We stand at a vantage point in the ground. We have a good view of everything – what’s the batsman doing, what are the kind of fields that can be set? Off the field, it depends on the type of person you are.Are you someone who likes forming a leadership group?
It is important to have leadership groups, but at the end of the day I need to be taking the call because I’m responsible for the team and I should know exactly what I’m doing and I believe in that.A lot of times while being a keeper, it is very hard to run up to the bowler frequently. So I have told Robin [Uthappa, vice-captain] the kind of things I want to achieve in the death overs and he speaks to the bowler every time it’s necessary. Initially I was trying to run to the bowler myself, but we were way behind the over rate and it wasn’t helping. So giving responsibility to someone who you feel can share the responsibility.

“One of my strengths as a person is, I’m very easy-going. You know me by now, I’m a restless, fidgety kind of guy who is always laughing, playing and monkeying around”

Mentoring youngsters is a key element in franchise-based tournaments. We have heard you have reached out to youngsters like Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi, the India Under-19 players, and helped them settle into the roles assigned to them. How did you go about that?
One of my strengths as a person is, I’m very easy-going. You know me by now, I’m a restless, fidgety kind of guy who is always laughing, playing and monkeying around. It is the same with the young guys – I kind of like being friends with them. At least I would like to think I give an image where they don’t feel, “Oh god, he is a senior.”Youngsters like Gill and Mavi have a free-flowing spirit. It is important for me to show them the path while letting them take the right decisions. I feel they have a beautiful journey ahead of them and [it shouldn’t be a case of them] trying to do things that I tell them, what I feel is better. You give them the knowledge and insight, but always allow them to take the decision. I believe in empowering people rather than advising them and forcing them in a direction which I feel is right. It is important to throw the right questions at them and they find the right answers.Did you see AB de Villiers bat against Delhi Daredevils? What goes through your mind when you watch a performance like that?
I did watch that innings. I genuinely wish I play some day like him, but I guess it won’t happen in this new, short life of mine.Yet earlier the same afternoon, you yourself played a fluent, strokeful innings that helped your team win.
It was a typical good Dinesh Karthik innings: hitting gaps, running hard, pushing people.Look, I’ve got to be happy with how I am as a cricketer. I would love to do special things and keep doing them consistently. What is important is to win matches and I should try to find a way to win matches the Dinesh Karthik way. I have always admired these great players, but I know what I am capable of and I will stick to that.Still, you are batting with more freedom, appear more relaxed, expressing yourself more, both in the IPL and when you played for India recently.
Expression comes from confidence. I’m able to go and play freely because of the confidence I am trying to gain after every game. It is important that if I do that consistently, touch wood, then obviously things start falling in place. AB de Villiers does what he does because he is confident of whatever he is doing, he has done it over and over and over again, so he knows exactly how to play, how to set a bowler up, what are the kind of shots he could play. It comes with basically doing well. You then just repeat your skills.By your own admission you are a restless person, who has a lot of tics and routines while batting or keeping. You usually come in to bat in high-pressure situations. Do you think you need to feel anxious to perform?
Most days I am nervous as it is. The days when I’m not, I try and keep my adrenaline up by doing some running etc. The adrenaline is very important for me when I go in to bat. That makes me tick, makes me think better. When your energy is up and running, you have a much better chance of doing well.”I do have the skill to score a century. More important than that is the fact that I can win matches, and that is the skill that I want to master”•BCCIYou have played for various franchises. Which is the best position in the batting order for you, in the mind space you are in now?
I just fit in anywhere. Why restrict myself when I feel versatility is one of my strengths. Why restrict myself to a certain number? I will try and focus on what I can do on a given day in a certain situation rather than putting a number to my batting and saying I’m comfortable here. I would much rather go out and use my brains a bit, assess the situation, and try and do the best I can with my batting.Fourteen fifties from 140-odd innings in IPLs, but no century. You are a batsman easily capable of scoring one. You must think about it, for sure?
Everybody wants to hit a century. [However] to hit a century you have to bat in the top three – that is the best chance of getting to the landmark. I don’t know a lot of No. 4s who have got a century. In most teams I have played in, people don’t want me to bat in the top three, they want me to finish an innings, create impetus in the middle. Those are the kind of roles they are looking at. Yes, I would love to score a century. And I do have the skill to score a century. I believe in that. More important than that is the fact that I can win matches, and that is the skill that I want to master. If you ask me: do you want me to score a century or be a middle-order finisher – middle-order finisher every day of the week. The year 2013 was your best in terms of runs (510), but your strike rate was hovering around the early 120s till 2016. Over the last two seasons you have increased it to the late 130s, and you average around 35. That is a significant improvement. Did you consciously work on your power game, or has it just been that you are hitting the ball much better?
It is just the way the game has changed. Before, 140 was a winning total. [Now] coaches want you to go in and smack it. Go in and express yourself and play shots with good intent throughout the innings. Does it sound like a very clichéd answer?Look, 190 is the new 140. Today, even 190 is not safe. Before, getting 40 or 42 in the first six overs was the norm. The other day Mumbai [Indians] were 0 for 2 and then they were 60 by the end of the Powerplay. The wickets are better to bat on, there is a lot more power in the game. You don’t use so much muscle, though?
I am not as powerful as [Andre] Russell. As I said, I have to find the DK way of doing things, which is run hard, find the gaps, run hard, beat the field. And like you said, the game has evolved, bowlers have become clever and have been plugging the points batsmen pick to hit at death. What is the Karthik way of finishing?
Four overs for 40 [at the death] was unthinkable a few years ago. Now four overs 40 is unthinkable for a bowler to restrict. There is no Karthik’s way or Dhoni’s way, it is just about finishing the game. It is just about knowing your game, what are the shots you can play, how are the shots you can get executed on that day, on that wicket. Those are the questions you need to answer. And how do you keep a clear mind like you did to win India the Nidahas Trophy recently?
Yes, that was clarity. That can be achieved by trying to get into the zone consistently, for which you ought to prepare and practise. How much of your captaincy is by instinct?
Ninety-five per cent. There is not much planning you can do. It is a very fluid game. If you want to produce results on the field, the way you practise is going to give you the answers on the field.

Auction trends: Is there a need for speed in the IPL?

Four factors that could influence how the franchises spend their cash at the 2018 IPL player auction

Gaurav Sundararaman24-Jan-2018Are really fast bowlers worth the big bucks?
IPL teams often splurge on a bowler who is capable of consistently hitting speeds in excess of 140kph. But are such express bowlers really effective in Indian conditions? Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Chris Morris, Mitchell Starc – who had one good season – and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was effective largely only in Kolkata last season, none of the others have made an impact consistently. Bowlers like Adam Milne, Tymal Mills, Matt Henry, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Kyle Abbott, Kane Richardson, Mitchell Johnson, Sean Abbott, Varun Aaron and Chris Woakes – to make several – have failed to justify their high prices.Eden Gardens is the only pace-friendly venue in the IPL at the moment, so while it might make sense for Kolkata Knight Riders to invest in speed for their home games, the other franchises might do well to exercise restraint while bidding on high-speed bowlers. They could be purchased for smaller amounts and played largely in the few games when conditions call for the extra yard of pace. Shorter boundaries, batting-friendly pitches, bigger bats and night games have them rarer in the IPL.About half of IPL’s most consistent batsmen over the past three seasons have been retained by their franchises•ESPNcricinfo LtdSecond-season syndrome
Do you remember Swapnil Asnodkar, Paul Valthaty, Ashok Menaria and Sudeep Tyagi? They had one really good IPL season, and no others. One-season wonders are fairly common in the IPL and the challenge for the teams is to not get carried away by them in the auction. Historically, only a few players do well across two or three IPL seasons. Hardik Pandya had a great 2015 but a woeful 2016, and came back strongly in 2017. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer had a good 2015 and a poor 2016.Over the previous three IPLs, only ten international batsmen – AB de Villiers, Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Brendon McCullum, David Warner, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina – have scored in excess of 300 runs each season at a healthy average and strike rate. Similarly, only eight bowlers – Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dwayne Bravo, Axar Patel, Chris Morris, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma and Yuzvendra Chahal) have been among the top wicket-takers list across all three seasons with good economy rates and strike rates. And though the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Washington Sundar and Ben Stokes did extremely well in 2017, history says that they might be hard pressed to have it as good in 2018. The franchises might want to watch out for that.Left-arm quicks have proven to be effective strike bowlers, but ill-suited to control the run flow in the IPL•ESPNcricinfo LtdLeft is right
Why did Tymal Mills get such a high bid – sold for $1.8 million – in the 2017 auction? Supply and demand. There aren’t that many left-arm quicks around internationally, and far fewer in Indian domestic cricket. Having a left-arm seamer who can swing the ball adds variety to the attack, especially because most Indian batsmen would not have faced too many quality left-armers in domestic cricket. As a result, these bowlers go for more money than others. Starc, McClenaghan and Mustafizur Rahman are some overseas success stories, while Ashish Nehra, Jaydev Unadkat and S Aravind have done well among the Indians.Data reveals that these fast bowlers are better used as wicket-taking options early on than to contain. Most left-arm pacers over the last three seasons have good strike-rates but only five have an economy below eight per over. Trent Boult, Mills, Mitchell Johnson and McClenaghan went for a lot of runs, while Aniket Choudhry, T Natarajan, RP Singh and Pradeep Sangwan failed. Franchises need to mindful of picking bowlers who are capable of providing the team with early breakthroughs, or at the back end with their variations.ESPNcricinfo LtdOverseas spinners
Unless they are Sunil Narine or Rashid Khan, overseas spinners have not had a major impact in the IPL. Only a handful have had match-winning performances in the league – a specialist overseas spinner has been Man of the Match in only 14 IPL matches. Narine won six of those awards, Shane Warne four, and Rashid Khan twice in his maiden season, which is a special performance.Apart from Imran Tahir – briefly in 2017 – no other overseas spinner has made any sort of impact consistently over the last few seasons. The likes of Adam Zampa, Ish Sodhi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Samuel Badree and Akila Dhananjaya are perhaps best suited as back-ups, rather than a first-choice overseas player. Franchises could choose to spend more prudently on overseas spinners, and pick up domestic spinners to do the job.

The Hundred 2023 retentions – full squad lists

The Hundred’s retention window closed on Tuesday night, following weeks of negotiations between players, agents, coaches and general managers. In the women’s competition, each team was able to retain four players from their 2022 squad, with a maximum of three ‘marquee’ players – either two overseas players and one England-contracted player, or vice versa. In the men’s competition, they could retain up to 10 players at a mutually-agreed salary band, plus their allocated England centrally-contracted player. As ESPNcricinfo revealed this week, several leading Australian women will skip the 2023 tournament, while a number of high-profile men’s players will return to the draft. The drafts for both competitions will be held on March 23, with the tournament taking place from August 1-27.In full: Women’s retentions•ECB/The Hundred

Bangladesh vs England dead rubber on the cards as ICC fall short of their aim

The ODI Super League was meant to bring context to every game. Market forces have not let that happen

Big picture – England’s Super League endsEngland arrived in Chattogram on Saturday ahead of their final fixture in the inaugural – and only – edition of the ICC’s ODI Super League. On Monday, they are looking to secure a three-nil series win, thereby becoming the first team to secure an away ODI series whitewash in Bangladesh since Sri Lanka in 2014.The Super League, the qualifying process for the 2023 World Cup in India, launched in 2020 with the lofty, noble aim to “raise the stakes of bilateral 50-over games”, according to the ICC at the time. The idea was simple enough. World Cup qualification had generally been decided on the opaque rankings system. Commercially-driven boards had no competitive incentive to schedule ODI series evenly, so top teams scheduled long series which were largely devoid of context against one another, rarely deigning to play emerging nations. The fixture list was imperfect – each team was scheduled to play eight opponents out of a possible twelve – but still generated series that might never have happened otherwise. The Netherlands hosted West Indies, England, Pakistan and New Zealand in a single summer. Ireland turned West Indies over in the Caribbean. Zimbabwe played Australia in a bilateral ODI series for the first time in 18 years – and won the third game. For Ireland, South Africa and Sri Lanka – who, along with West Indies, are jostling to avoid June’s qualification tournament in Zimbabwe by securing the final automatic World Cup spot – the final months of the Super League represent a vital opportunity. But for the rest, they are an irrelevance. As the qualification cycle draws towards a close, it is clear that market forces have overtaken the ICC’s ambitions: several series have now been abandoned as a result of franchise cricket’s squeeze on the international calendar, and the Super League has been scrapped altogether.”Since each point matters, there will be no dead rubbers and teams will always have to be at their very best,” the ICC said in 2020. Monday’s game in Chattogram is a direct refutation of that claim.Form guideBangladesh LLLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
England WWWLLIn the spotlight: Litton Das and Rehan AhmedLitton Das was the leading run-scorer for BPL champions Comilla Victorians and is long established as Tamim Iqbal’s opening partner in ODIs. But he has not got going in this series, scratching around for 7 off 15 in the first game before chopping his first ball to point in the second. He has now gone five ODI innings in a row without reaching 50, and could do with a score in Chattogram.Litton Das has been unable to reprise his BPL form•AFP/Getty Images

If not now, when? Rehan Ahmed, the 18-year-old legspinning allrounder, is England’s long-term replacement for Adil Rashid and could win his first white-ball cap on Monday. The deadest of rubbers provides the ideal low-stakes opportunity for him to make his debut, and his ability with the bat means he could even play alongside Rashid if conditions suit.Team news: Will Buttler rest himself?Mustafizur Rahman looked out of sorts and short on confidence in Mirpur, bowling 18 wicketless overs and leaking 5.83 an over, making him the most expensive bowler on either side. If Bangladesh decide to change things up, he could give way for Ebadot Hossain or Hasan Mahmud. The uncapped Towhid Hridoy is the squad’s spare batter.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Litton Das, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Afif Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Taijul Islam, 11 Ebadot Hossain/Hasan Mahmud.Rehan Ahmed is in line for an ODI debut•AP Photo/Aijaz Rahi

Reece Topley is likely to play for the first time in the series, with England rotating their seam attack throughout the tour. Will Jacks has been ruled out of the rest of the tour with a quad injury; with no spare batter in the squad, England will change their balance somewhat.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 James Vince, 5 Jos Buttler (capt/wk), 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Chris Woakes, 8 Rehan Ahmed, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid/Saqib Mahmood, 11 Reece Topley.Pitch and conditions: Expect it to spin againThe weather in Chattogram has been warm and dry. The Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium pitches tend to be significantly better for batting than Mirpur; in the most recent game at the venue, India piled on 408 for 9. But this one could assist spinners for a change, as it looks quite dry. “The block, just walking over the square, definitely feels a bit harder; the one in Mirpur felt a little bit tacky, a bit softer,” Mark Wood said on Sunday.Stats and trivia Jason Roy’s hundred on Friday was his 12th in ODIs, taking him joint-third in England’s all-time list. He is one behind Eoin Morgan, and four behind Joe Root. Shakib Al Hasan needs four wickets to reach 300 in men’s ODIs. He would be the first Bangladesh bowler to reach that landmark, and the third left-arm spinner after Sanath Jayasuriya and Daniel Vettori. England have only played seven men’s fixtures across formats in 2023 but have already used 27 players, the joint-most of any team this year. Friday’s victory saw England leapfrog New Zealand at the top of the Super League table. They could extend their lead to 15 points on Sunday.Quotes”There’s nothing called an automatic choice. Nobody is an automatic choice. I will not be in the team if I am not performing regularly, even though I am the captain. A player’s performance graph will go up and down all the time, but we believe he will turn his form around.”
“He’s impressed everybody, not just me. The whole team have said how well he’s bowled. He’s bowling quickly, hitting good lengths. In the first game, he showed our seam-bowling group where to bowl, really.”
