Turner signs with Durham for a third straight Blast season

Western Australia batter Ashton Turner is headed back to Durham to play a third straight season in the Vitality Blast following his stint in the IPL with Lucknow Super Giants.Turner, 31, has not played since knee surgery during the BBL ended his Australian domestic season in December but he is currently with LSG in the IPL although he has not been called into the XI due to their strong overseas contingent. But he is set to be a key part of Durham’s Blast campaign having played 22 matches for them across the last two seasons, scoring 408 runs at 34.00 with a strike-rate of 153.38 in the middle-order.Related

Turner is one of the very few T20 middle-order specialists in Australia and has been a popular player at both Durham and Manchester Originals in the last two England summers. Both Durham and Originals have strong WA connections with Turner’s former WA team-mate Marcus North the director of cricket at Durham and former WA keeper-batter Ryan Campbell the current coach. Turner’s former Perth Scorchers captain Simon Katich is the current Originals coach.Turner’s quality as a middle-order batter and leader is highly valued at Durham and North said he was delighted to have him back.”It is great to news to have Ashton returning to Durham this season,” North said. “During his two spells at the club, he has demonstrated vital leadership skills and fits into our dressing room very well.”He is a proven leader and run scorer having captained the Scorchers and Western Australia to multiple championships in recent years. I look forward to him returning to the club in May.”Turner has captained Scorchers to two BBL titles and WA to three Marsh Cup (Australian domestic 50-over) titles in the last five years. His absence from the BBL through injury had a major impact on Scorchers’ failure to claim a BBL three-peat.He has played nine ODIs and 19 T20Is for Australia, with his most recent international coming against South Africa during a three-match T20I series last year.

Carey, Graham help Tasmania secure a hat-trick of WNCL titles

Nicola Carey hit Tasmania to a WNCL three-peat, with an unbeaten century lifting them to a six-wicket win over Queensland in the final.Chasing 249, Carey hit a composed 111 from 135 balls to control the hosts innings and get them home with 14 balls to spare at Blundstone Arena.Perennial battlers in the 50-over competition for their first 10 seasons after joining in 2010-11, Tasmania only won their first title in 2022 before backing it up with two more. And they can thank Carey for the latest one. Not picked for Australia since December 2022, Carey knocked back a national contract last April in a bid to rejuvenate her game with a full winter at home. The decision has paid dividends. The one-time bowling allrounder topped the run-scoring charts in this summer’s WNCL, with Saturday’s runs taking her past 696 for the season. Carey’s runs came at an average of 69.6, a mark only bettered by Meg Lanning this season. On Saturday, Carey barely offered a chance, pulling powerfully and twice reverse-sweeping spinner Charlie Knott to the boundary. She brought up her century off 128 balls, after previously forming a 132-run partnership with Heather Graham (63 off 75) that swung the match.Queensland briefly had a sniff when Graham was bowled trying to reverse sweep Georgia Voll, before Naomi Stalenberg was caught three balls later for a duck. At that point Tasmania needed 67 runs from 68 balls with six wickets in hand, but Carey and Emma Manix-Geeves ensured there would be no late jitters.”I’m relieved, that was stressful,” Carey said. “I felt scratchy but Heather and EMG made my life so much easier. I love batting with Heather, it’s always good fun. She makes it look really easy and I make it look harder.”Earlier, Graham also took 3 for 39 with the ball to stop any hope of Queensland setting an unattainable target. With Queesland 115 for 2 in the 28th over, Graham got a ball to skid on and bowl Lauren Winfield-Hill for 28. She then had Mikayla Hinkley lbw on 33, before bowling a hard-hitting Knott for 73 late in the innings to keep Queensland to 248 for 7.Tasmania’s victory makes them the second state to achieve a hat-trick of titles in the WNCL, with NSW having at one stage won 10 straight between 2005-06 and 2014-15.

Man Utd still lurking as Valencia offer Javi Guerra massive contract extension after midfielder rejected first proposal

Valencia are set to offer a new contract extension to Javi Guerra as they attempt to fight off interest from Manchester United and AC Milan.

Guerra has rejected Valencia's contract renewalMidfielder is interested in working out a deal United and AC Milan have also shown interestFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old midfielder was quick to reject Valencia's extension proposal, but the Spanish club are confident that they can get him to put pen to paper with further discussions. According to , the Spaniard is happy to continue at Valencia but wants the club to meet certain criteria, ranging from increasing his wages to competing at the top level of football rather than fighting for survival in the Spanish League.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Guerra's current contract expires in 2027, and Valencia are interested in extending it to 2029. In the contract proposed to Guerra, the club offered him increased wages, which would have increased year-on-year and would have earned the midfielder €15 million (£13m/$17m) over four years. However, Guerra didn't like the initial base salary, finding it unfeasible. Valencia consider Guerra to be one for the future and are willing to accommodate changes to the offer.

Guerra's demands, however, go beyond the salary figures. In addition to increased wages, the player wants the club to have a better sporting project, one that can compete at the top level. United and Milan have shown interest, with the latter having even launched a bid of €16m (£14m/$18m) plus €4m in bonuses.

DID YOU KNOW?

Valencia are not willing to part ways with Guerra, not only because they don't want to lose out on a future star, but also because his contract has a sell-on clause. As per the sell-on clause, Villarreal, Guerra's former club, will receive 30 per cent of the transfer fee from Guerra's sale. This means that for the club to make a profit of over €20m (£17m/$23m), Valencia will have to sell Guerra for more than €28m (£24m/$32m), a figure that no club is willing to match at this time.

The player's camp are receptive to the contract offered, as they believe that through further discussions, they will reach a common ground. Guerra, who was born and raised in Valencia, is reportedly interested in continuing his career at Mestalla Stadium. Valencia are also optimistic about retaining Guerra and have since rejected Milan's offer.

'It is not in my hands' – Kishan not thinking about T20 World Cup selection

“When you take a break, people gossip about it a lot. But I feel it’s important to understand not everything is in players’ hands,” Kishan says

Moody: Kishan is getting his career back on track

Having returned to competitive cricket after a break for personal reasons, Ishan Kishan is not thinking about his spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad.Kishan, who last played for India in November, had asked for a break during the South Africa tour in December-January. He returned to action in February during the DY Patil T20 Cup. Currently, he is the leading run-scorer for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 with a tally of 161 at a strike rate of 182.95.”About the World Cup, it is not in my hands and I am taking things very easy right now,” he said on Thursday, after starring with a 34-ball 69 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru to help Mumbai win by seven wickets. “You have to take one match at a time. One needs to understand that a lot is not in the hands of the players.Related

Dravid to Iyer, Ishan: 'Score runs, force selectors to pick you'

“It [the IPL] is a long big tournament and you do not want to overstep. I am just taking one game at a time and [my motto is] however I can help the team, let’s do it.Talking about his time away from the game, Kishan said: “I was practising [during the break]. When you take a break, people gossip about it a lot, they say a lot of things on social media. But I feel it’s important to understand not everything is in players’ hands. We can only make the best use of the break. This is what adopting a good mindset is.”Kishan, along with Shreyas Iyer, was not considered for the BCCI central contract for the period between October 2023 and September 2024. However, Kishan is not thinking about proving a point to anyone.Ishan Kishan smashed a 23-ball fifty against RCB•Associated Press”There is nothing like that [that] I want to prove to someone,” he said. “I just have to go there and enjoy. I have learned that you do not have to add pressure on yourself about these things, which are not in your hand. You have to figure out what are [your] controllables and what are [your] uncontrollables.”If I were the old Ishan Kishan, I might not have left the good deliveries in the first two overs [against RCB]. I would have been in pressure. But with time I have learned that even 20 overs are a lot and you can take your time. You can have the belief and move forward. So all these things helped me in that break also. Now we lost some games here, but I feel most of the players, not just me, were keen to work with everyone. It was never about us individually performing well for the team and not knowing what other players were going through. So I also know if someone is not doing well, how they feel.”So these things also changed in me that even when I am not performing, if I know someone isn’t feeling good, let’s talk to them, let’s know what their mindset is. So these things have happened after that break.” Hardik ‘loves challenges’, fans ‘will start loving him’Hardik Pandya might have been at the receiving end of fans’ ire in this IPL, but Kishan has little doubt that the Mumbai captain is “enjoying the challenge” of winning them over.Hardik, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain before the start of this IPL, has been consistently getting booed by the fans and the situation was no different on Thursday night at the Wankhede.”He [Hardik] loves challenges, he has been in this situation before and he is in that situation right now,” Kishan said.” He is not someone who will come out and talk about it and say let’s stop this or that. I know that he must be enjoying it. I know him personally. I have spent a lot of time with him. He is ready for the challenges because you cannot complain to the fans, they will come up with their explanations and their point of view.”Kishan said Hardik could turn around fans’ anger with his performances.”Knowing how Hardik Pandya thinks, he is happy with people doing it but I know that in the coming games, he will do it with the bat and people will start loving him [again]. People also recognise your hard work, what you are going through and still you are doing so well for your team.”Our fans will be a little harsh on you but at the same time when you do well, or when you show that it is [still] not bothering you and [that] you are in a good headspace, that might change. If not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, the day after tomorrow.”

O trunfo da equipe tricolor é a participação na Libertadores. Ainda que seja na fase preliminar da competição, a disputa pode atrair o atacante a vestir a camisa do clube nesta próxima temporada.

Anderson to retire after Lord's Test against West Indies

He will call curtains on a legendary career at the ground where it all began for him 21 years ago

James Anderson ‘England’s greatest ever bowler’

James Anderson has announced he will retire from international cricket after England’s first Test of the summer at Lord’s, against West Indies, bringing the curtain down on a legendary career where it all began 21 years ago.Anderson, who turns 42 in July, made his Test debut at Lord’s in 2003 against Zimbabwe. He has gone on to take 700 wickets – the most by any pace bowler in Test history. His eventual tally of 188 caps will be the second most in Test history, with just Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him on 200.In a personal statement released on Instagram, Anderson confirmed he would represent England one last time, although speaking later to the BBC’s Tailenders podcast, he did not rule out the possibility of extending his playing career with Lancashire.”Hi everyone. Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord’s will be my last Test,” Anderson wrote on Instagram.”It’s been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I’ve loved since I was a kid. I’m going to miss walking out for England so much. But I know the time is right to step aside and let others realise their dreams just like I got to, because there is no greater feeling.””I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ruby and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world.”I’m excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf.”Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years, it’s always meant a lot, even if my face often doesn’t show it.”See you at the Test,”Go well”Jimmy x”Anderson had previously harboured ambitions to play England’s six Tests this summer against West Indies and Sri Lanka and even refused to rule out being around for the 2025-26 Ashes, by which point he would be 43. However, following a face-to-face meeting on the golf course with Test head coach Brendon McCullum in April, and further conversations involving managing director Rob Key, Anderson was informed the team needed to look beyond him this summer with a view to building to that tour of Australia. The news of that meeting, initially reported in on Friday, ultimately brought confirmation from Anderson 24 hours later. He was due to feature as part of the BBC’s live coverage of England Women’s first match of the summer against Pakistan at Edgbaston on Saturday but has subsequently pulled out.James Anderson is set to finish his career with 188 Tests to his name•Getty Images

Speaking to Tailenders, Anderson confirmed that his discussions with McCullum had come up as part of his annual appraisal, at the six-month mark of his one-year contract.”I feel like I have talked about it for ten years with every coach I have had, asking ‘how long you going to play for’,” Anderson said. “Looking ahead, could a 43-year-old me make the Ashes in 18 months time? I sort of came to the decision ‘probably not’. From my point of view it feels like a stretch at this point in my career, and from their point of view there are 15 or so Tests before the Ashes so it gives them time to get other guys Tests and experience before that Ashes series.”I feel good about it, I have had an amazing career. Stuff about retirement has been hanging around for years now, ever since I turned 30 and grown even more since I turned 40. I just feel really lucky that I have managed to get to this stage, still playing at this very high level.”Anderson reached the 700 Test-wicket mark earlier this year in the fifth and final Test of England’s tour of India. Though he has long been the lynchpin of the English attack, he bowled just 110 overs in seven innings in that series after a tough Ashes campaign last summer in which he took just five wickets at 85.40 in four Tests. Anderson is currently on a one-year central contract which expires at the end of the summer.Regarding his county career, however, Anderson admitted he was “not 100% set” on hanging up his boots, and could yet feature in the latter half of Lancashire’s Championship campaign.”There are games at the end of the season that I’m not ruling out at this moment,” he said. “That’s a conversation I’ve got to have with Lancashire and see what they want to do.”It is part of the thought process. I’m not 100% set on what I’m going to do next. That will be a conversation further down the line with Lancashire and see what they want to do, see if I’ve actually got the desire and willingness to do that as well. Again, that will be later in the year.”In a statement released by the ECB alongside Anderson’s, chair Richard Thompson said:”I don’t think we’ll ever see a bowler to match Jimmy again. It has been an honour as an England fan to watch him, and to marvel at his skill with the ball.”To still be bowling at the top of his game at 41 is remarkable, and he is a true inspiration and role model for peers and younger generations alike.”His final Test promises to be an emotional one, and having been there for his first Test in 2003, it will be an honour to watch his final one at Lord’s in July.”English cricket owes Jimmy Anderson a send-off like no other.”

WHY HAVE THEY BEEN NOMINATED?

Barcelona sensation Yamal, who recently turned 18 and inherited Lionel Messi’s old No.10 shirt in Catalunya, helped the Blaugrana to La Liga and Copa del Rey titles in 2024-25.

France international Doue starred for PSG as they captured a historic Champions League crown, with Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves one of his club colleagues at Parc des Princes.

Myles Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a breakthrough year at Arsenal, while also making his senior England debut, and will be joined in the Premier League for the 2025-26 campaign by exciting Brazilian starlet Estevao – who has completed a big-money transfer to Chelsea.

In the women’s game, Agyemang is one of the five nominees after playing a super-sub role for England in their Euro 2025 triumph. The Arsenal-owned forward netted a couple of crucial goals there and was named Young Player of the Tournament.

Buttler, Livingstone, other England cricketers leave IPL early for T20 World Cup duty

Liam Livingstone, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and England allrounder, has left India ahead of schedule in a bid to get his knee “sorted” before June’s T20 World Cup.The rest of England’s T20 World Cup squad, who have been at IPL 2024, have also started to return home. Will Jacks and Reece Topley flew back to the UK after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB’s) win over Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday night, while Jos Buttler left the Rajasthan Royals (RRS) camp ahead of their game against PBKS in Guwahati on Wednesday. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Phil Salt, meanwhile, left on Tuesday*.Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran are also due to leave India this week, with England players expected back in the country by this weekend. The squad will meet up in Leeds ahead of England’s first T20I against Pakistan at Headingley on May 22.

Livingstone wants to get knee ‘sorted’ before T20 World Cup

Livingstone has suffered from a series of muscle injuries in the past two years and missed two games early in the IPL season after he went down in the field during a defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) last month. He was later left out by PBKS as they looked to find their best combination of overseas players, but he returned to the side in their loss to RCB on Thursday.

“IPL done for another year, had to get my knee sorted for the upcoming World Cup,” Livingstone wrote on Instagram. “Thanks once again to the Punjab Kings fans for all their love and support. Disappointing season as a team and personally, but as always I loved every minute of playing in the IPL”ESPNcricinfo understands that the knee injury is not serious enough to place his prospects of travelling to the T20 World Cup in doubt, but requires a period of rest before England play Pakistan in four T20Is later this month.Livingstone struggled to make an impact for PBKS – who were among the first teams to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoffs race – in what he described as a “disappointing” campaign. He made 111 runs at 22.20 in seven innings, striking at 142.30, and took three wickets in 12 overs. It extends a lean winter for him in franchise cricket after a quiet SA20 season with MI Cape Town and a two-match stint with Sharjah Warriors.
