England player ratings vs Senegal: Kyle Walker, the football has left you – Thomas Tuchel loses first game as Three Lions boss as hosts completely outclassed & outfought in dreadful display

Thomas Tuchel demanded better after the drab showing against Andorra but he didn't get it, as the African nation embarrassed the Three Lions

England suffered a dismal 3-1 loss to Senegal as Thomas Tuchel tasted defeat for the time as Three Lions boss on a truly awful night for the hosts at the home of Nottingham Forest.

After an early scare that saw Nicolas Jackson force Dean Henderson into a smart save, it was that man Harry Kane, in from the start once again, who opened the scoring in the seventh minute – the Bayern Munich striker tapping home after Anthony Gordon's low shot was saved by Edouard Mendy.

It should've been 2-0 28 minutes in but Newcastle winger Gordon somehow failed to find the target as he raced into the box to try and convert Kyle Walker's delicious cross from the right – a shocking miss that would soon be punished. With Senegal growing into the game – and having already forced Henderson into five first-half saves – they grabbed a deserved equaliser shortly before half-time as a simple ball over the top caught out the Three Lions and left an unchallenged Nicolas Jackson to square for Ismaila Sarr to convert with Walker hopelessly caught napping.

One would expect Tuchel to have delivered some choice words at half-time but whatever he said didn't seem to work. Another long ball over the top completely opened up England, with Habib Diarra taking advantage as he broke in behind Myles Lewis-Skelly and found a way through Henderson and into the net.

The hosts had their chances – first Gibbs-White and then Saka being denied by a superb Mendy save – but it wasn't to be for the Three Lions, who saw a late Jude Bellingham goal ruled out by VAR for a handball by Levi Colwill and, to make matters worse, Senegal then broke up the other end and made it three courtesy of Metz winger Cheikh Sabaly.

GOAL rates England's players after a hugely frustrating evening for Tuchel and his charges at the City Ground…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Dean Henderson (5/10):

Made a number of decent saves to ensure England only conceded once in the first half. Might've done better to keep out Diarra's effort, that went through his legs and into the net.

    Kyle Walker (3/10):

A nightmare evening for the right-back. Way off the pace and completely fell asleep at the far post as Sarr dashed past him to convert the equaliser. Would've had an assist to his name but for Gordon spectacularly fluffing his lines.

    Trevoh Chalobah (4/10):

Not the England debut he would've dreamt about. Naively gave Jackson far too much time to cross for equaliser and was given a tough ride all night by his Chelsea team-mate.

    Levi Colwill (4/10):

Loose with his passing at times and didn't seem comfortable up against the threat of Jackson. Didn't sense the danger of the long balls over the top for both goals.

    Myles Lewis-Skelly (4/10):

A really poor night for the Arsenal full-back, who was caught out for the second goal and offered nothing going forward.

    Midfield

    Declan Rice (4/10):

Seemed way off the pace after a long and gruelling season with Arsenal. Was overrun, and sometimes bullied, in midfield and clearly now needs that long, post-season rest.

    Conor Gallagher (5/10):

Had some issues dealing with the dangerous Ndiaye and Gueye as England lost the midfield battle in the first half. Hooked for Curtis Jones soon after half-time.

    Attack

    Bukayo Saka (4/10):

Completely anonymous until his big chance finally arrived shortly before he was replaced after 71 minutes, only for Mendy to make a miraculous save to deny him.

    Eberchi Eze (6/10):

One of very few in an England shirt to have had a positive influence on the game. One of those bright moments saw him pinch the ball and drive forwards to help create the opening goal.

    Anthony Gordon (4/10):

How did he miss?! Set the tone with his early pressing and it was his saved shot that led to Kane tapping in the opener but the sitter he sent wide was truly awful and ruined his night.

    Harry Kane (7/10):

Probably scored the easiest of his 73 England goals with the early tap-in. Didn't have a sniff after that as his team-mates struggled to create any chances for him before he was taken off for Rogers.

    Subs & Manager

    Curtis Jones (5/10):

One of three changes made just before the hour-mark but had little impact.

    Morgan Rogers (5/10):

Came on for Kane but couldn't change the course of the game.

    Morgan Gibbs-White (7/10):

Injected some much-needed life and energy into the attack when he came on and was unlucky not to score. Also set-up a big chance for Saka.

    Jude Bellingham (6/10):

On for the final 20 minutes and thought he'd found a clutch equaliser, only for VAR to rule it out.

    Noni Madueke (N/A):

Replaced Saka and sent over the corner for the disallowed goal but brought on too late to be able to have a meaningful impact.

    Ivan Toney (N/A):

Sent on with a couple of minutes remaining for Lewis-Skelly.

    Thomas Tuchel (4/10):

Another hugely disappointing display from his side and, unlike against Andorra, this time they paid for it against stronger opposition. His defence completely fell apart and his second-half substitutions didn't bring about the necessary change in fortunes. Awful.

West Indies recall Cornwall, Warrican for first India Test; McKenzie gets maiden call-up

Left-hand batter Kirk McKenzie has earned a maiden call-up in the 13-man West Indies squad that will face India in the first Test from July 12 in Dominica, while Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican have been recalled as the spin options. Uncapped batter Alick Athanaze was retained in the side after he traveled to South Africa for West Indies’ last Test series but didn’t get a game. With Gudakesh Motie undergoing rehabilitation for his lower-back injury, an “opportunity” opened up for the two spinners, according to CWI lead selector Desmond Haynes. Kyle Mayers and fast bowler Jayden Seales were recovering from their niggles but were not considered to risk any further injuries. The selectors also named wicketkeeper-batter Tevin Imlach and right-arm quick Akeem Jordan as the two traveling reserves for the first Test.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Shannon Gabriel, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach and Jason Holder will form the pace attack with Raymon Reifer as the all-round option.”We had Jayden Seales here in the camp and he has made good progress during his rehab from surgery. However, we felt he is not yet quite ready to return, and we don’t want to risk him at this stage,” Haynes said. “Kyle Mayers was also considered but he has some niggles, and the precaution is not to have him in the rigors of a five-day match at this stage.”We are without Motie, who is doing his rehabilitation, and this has created an opportunity for Warrican and Cornwall in the spin-bowling department. They have both played at Test match level before and are capable of doing the job.”We were very impressed with the approach to batsmanship of McKenzie and Athanaze on the recent ‘A’ Team tour of Bangladesh. These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity, and we believe they deserve an opportunity.”McKenzie, 22, and Athanaze, 24, hit two half-centuries each in Bangladesh with the A team in May. McKenzie scored 91 and 86 in Sylhet after the 221 he scored in the Headley Weekes Tri-Series competition in April. Athanaze most recently struck the joint-fastest fifty on ODI debut, against UAE in Sharjah and also earned a CPL contract recently, with Barbados Royals.McKenzie has played just nine first-class matches to average 39.40 after scoring 591 runs with a century and four half-centuries. He made his first-class debut last year for Jamaica. Both Cornwall and Warrican last played a Test in Sri Lanka at the end of 2021. Warrican toured Zimbabwe earlier this year but didn’t play and also missed the subsequent tour of South Africa.Cornwall, who made his Test debut against India in 2019, returned on the back of strong recent form in first-class cricket. He was the top wicket-taker in the last first-class season with 35 scalps in just five outings – including four five-wicket hauls – while also scoring two half-centuries.This series will be the first for both West Indies and India in the new cycle (2023-25) of the World Test Championship. West Indies finished eighth out of nine teams in the previous iteration, winning only four of their 13 games in that cycle. The first Test is scheduled for July 12 to 16 followed by the second in Port of Spain from July 20. The two teams will then play three ODIs and five T20Is.West Indies squad for first India Test: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Jermaine Blackwood (vice-capt), Alick Athanaze, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Rahkeem Cornwall, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Kirk McKenzie, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican. ICC agrees overseas players cap for new T20 leagues

New ruling will not yet apply to existing leagues such as the ILT20 and MLC

Nagraj Gollapudi and Osman Samiuddin13-Jul-2023The ICC has approved a cap of four overseas players – active or retired – and seven local players, which can include Associate players, for all new T20 leagues. The ruling will not initially affect existing tournaments such as the UAE-based International League T20 (ILT20), the US’s Major League Cricket (MLC) and Canada’s Global T20 (GLT20), all of which allow more than four overseas players in the playing XI. These leagues will, however, have to conform to those limits within a reasonable period of time. Additionally, leagues will have to pay a 10% release fee to the home board of each player it hires every season. The new regulation was voted in by cricket’s chief executives, though not without hiccups after intense deliberations over two days in Durban, where the ICC’s AGM ended on Thursday. The recommendation to limit the number of foreign players in a league had come from an ICC working group tasked last year to fight the player drain feared by some Full Members from the mushrooming of T20 leagues, especially in non-Full Member countries. On Tuesday, when the ICC’s chief executives committee (CEC) first met, the original working group proposal which capped overseas players at four and required a minimum of four local players in all leagues was actually voted down 8-6. However, the CEC continued discussions and reconvened on Wednesday to discuss an amended recommendation (redrawn by the working group) through which this new consensus was reached: all new T20 leagues cannot have more than four overseas players in an XI, but they can list Associate players as locals, providing them exposure as well as expanding cricket’s growth in smaller countries. The ICC Board, which met on Thursday, then ratified the CEC recommendation. The development will come as some relief to the ILT20 and MLC, which allow nine and six overseas players respectively in their playing XIs. The Global T20, which has been revived by Cricket Canada and starts later this month, allows five overseas players from Full Member countries in the playing XI alongside minimum of three locals with the remaining slots filled by a combination of players from Associates and Americas. The ILT20 was launched this January, and the MLC’s inaugural season kicks off on Thursday in Dallas. How much time these leagues are given to get within the representation caps of the new regulations will likely be decided on a case by case basis, depending on the commercial agreements each league has in place as well as agreements with franchises on the composition of a starting XI.The ICC working group which has been working on the proposal comprised Wasim Khan (ICC general manager of cricket), along with Arun Dhumal (IPL chairman and BCCI representative on ICC’s CEC), Johnny Grave (CWI CEO), Nick Hockley (Cricket Australia CEO) and Mubashir Usmani (Emirates Cricket Board secretary). It was formed after members began to express concerns at last year’s AGM in Birmingham about the emergence of leagues which, at that time, were under no hard cap restrictions for overseas players.BCCI initially voted against hard capThe Emirates Cricket Board and Cricket Canada both are currently represented at the CEC, which is made up of the 12 Full Members and three Associate Members. During the Tuesday vote, all three Associate members are believed to have voted against the original proposal that would have seen a minimum of four local players in the XI in a T20 league as well as a maximum of four overseas players.ESPNCricinfo understands that the BCCI, NZC, the BCB, SLC and Zimbabwe Cricket joined the Associates in voting against that proposal. The PCB, CWI, Cricket Australia, the ECB and Cricket Ireland, meanwhile, voted for the regulation.Regardless of that first vote, however, there was a resolve among CEC members for some regulation that, according to an official present at the meeting, “protects the sport”. Members agreed that cricket must avoid conditions, for example, that could lead to the kind of breakaway and eventual takeover of the sport that golf has undergone recently. That began with prominent golfers defecting to a parallel circuit, LIV Golf, owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, after being offered unparalleled financial rewards. After a brief, troubled period, the end arrived last month with an agreement forged between the PGA, who hitherto ran golf, and LIV Golf, who had set up the breakaway circuit.Though a commitment to international cricket remains among Full Members, the spread of IPL franchise owners into other leagues worldwide is heralding major change and forming, essentially, a parallel calendar. Four of the six franchises in MLC, cricket’s next attempt to the break into the US market, belong to owners of IPL franchises. Three of those owners have a franchise in ILT20, too. The MLC allows six overseas players in the XI and with salaries as high as USD$175,000 on offer for less than a month, several leading players globally – barring India – have signed up.That league comes hot on the heels of CSA’s SA20, launched earlier this year at the same time as the ILT20 (nine of the 12 franchises across those two leagues are owned by IPL owners) and Canada’s Global T20 which starts on July 20.The working group’s recommendations first came to light last month, after the group met during the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and India at The Oval. The group has been driven by the concern that T20 leagues running parallel in different continents with international and domestic cricket has created scenarios such as that faced by New Zealand and Trent Boult. Boult effectively became a free agent after turning down a national contract last August so that he could shape his time and commitment towards a better work-life balance by playing in leagues.10% release fee proposedThe CEC also accepted the working group’s proposal to have T20 leagues pay a 10% release fee to players’ home boards every season. The 10%, described as a solidarity fee, is a proposed amount and can be negotiated between the host board conducting the league and the player’s home board. The IPL has been paying release fees since its inception – the BCCI pays boards a minimum 10% release fee per player. Other leagues, too, have negotiated similar amounts in bilateral agreements with fellow boards, in order to obtain no-objection player certificates. One concern raised during an earlier meeting in London was whether Associate boards could afford the release fee considering the limited funding they get from the ICC. Passing the onus to the franchise, at least one working group member said, wouldn’t be easy, since no such clause might exist in current contracts. The other solution, the group had suggested, would involve deducting it from the player’s fee. It is not yet clear who will foot the release fee eventually.

More assists than Gordon: Newcastle plotting move to sign "terrific" star

With PIF aiming to fast-track Newcastle United’s progress, the Magpies have reportedly set their sights on signing an attacking reinforcement who’s assisted more goals than Anthony Gordon this season.

Newcastle eyeing Murphy upgrade

Fresh from the dreamland of Wembley success, Newcastle United are seemingly looking to keep their momentum going in pursuit of Champions League qualification and the reinforcements that could follow.

Already, names such as Semih Kilicsoy and Tammy Abraham have been mentioned as targets that Paul Mitchell could chase this summer, but they could just be the start if Newcastle are unleashed from their PSR shackles at long last.

Abraham is a particularly interesting target, given his previous Premier League spell at Chelsea. The forward has endured a mixed spell in Italy since leaving Stamford Bridge, having found his form at AS Roma before injury struck and struggles arrived ever since.

Now, four years on from joining the Serie A, Abraham could be on his way back to English football, courtesy of Newcastle. However, he’s not the only attacking target that the Magpies have reportedly set their sights on.

According to The i Paper, Newcastle are now plotting a summer move to sign Francisco Trincao from Sporting CP after identifying a new target to complete Eddie Howe’s frontline once and for all.

Like Abraham, Trincao has unfinished business in the Premier League after going down as a transfer flop at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021 only to steal several headlines ever since at Sporting.

Following an excellent spell in Portugal, the winger could be ready to step back into England’s top flight and offer Newcastle an instant upgrade on Jacob Murphy. As impressive as Howe’s winger has been this season, it remains to be seen whether he can match the star power of Alexander Isak, Gordon and perhaps even Trincao.

"Terrific" Trincao would complete Newcastle attack

If Newcastle are looking to step into the Champions League on a permanent basis, then signing a player of Trincao’s calibre would certainly be a good start. Dubbed “terrific” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the winger has only reached greater heights ever since and is now at the peak of his powers at 25 years old.

With more goal involvements than Gordon this season, it’s clear that Trincao has the talent to step into Howe’s strongest side if Newcastle decide to make their move this summer.

With 15 assists and nine goals to his name in all competitions, the winger would particularly thrive next to one of Europe’s best strikers in Isak, whose own numbers could increase to even greater levels next season.

On paper, a front three of Gordon, Isak and Trincao is certainly worthy of Champions League football. However, whether that proves to be the case remains to be seen, as PIF potentially flex their financial muscles once again at long last.

Newcastle now join race for "special" teenage star likened to Cole Palmer

Newcastle United have joined the race for a “special” young star who has been likened to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, according to a new report.

Newcastle plan for big summer after Carabao Cup success

Newcastle have had quite the season. Not only are the Magpies firmly in the race for Champions League football next season, they also won the Carabao Cup – their first piece of major silverware in 64 years.

To clinch the trophy, Eddie Howe’s side beat Premier League leaders Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium, with both Alexander Isak and Dan Burn on the scoresheet.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle about the club’s open-top bus parade, which took place over the weekend, Burn said: “It’s something I’ll never forget – I knew there would be a lot of people but when we saw the sheer amount of people it was amazing.

“It really hit home, what it means to the region and the city, the achievement that we’ve managed to do. The lads were starting chants all the way round and just being able to take in that moment, it was only an hour but it’s an hour I’ll never forget.”

On his goal in the final, which saw the English defender head home Kieran Trippier’s corner, Burn said: “The first few days, my phone was getting constantly pinged with videos and remixes, when I was away with the England lads it was on TV all the time and I ended up having to switch the TVs off at the end because I was starting to get a bit embarrassed!”

“I will watch it forever, I’ll never tire of it – it was an amazing moment.”

Newcastle join race for Dibling despite huge price tag

Even after such a successful season, Newcastle are expected to bolster their squad in the summer, with Howe keen to push on from this year’s achievements and build more depth. Among those players thought to be interesting the Magpies is Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle are now one of several clubs keen on the English talent and are “expected to closely monitor” his situation at Southampton in the coming weeks, as the Saints brace for a significant transfer shake-up when they eventually get relegated back to the Championship.

Though previously Southampton put a price tag of £100 million on Dibling’s head, it’s thought that the asking price will significantly drop in the summer to ensure a sale.

Dibling has been one of Southampton’s standout players in an otherwise poor season for the club, and has been heavily lauded for his performances by former Premier League players Danny Murphy and Dion Dublin.

“It is the quality he has got – the belief in himself and the physical power. He just goes past people with ease. He has got a lovely left foot. He is very brave on the ball and his decision-making is good,” Murphy told BBC Sport of the 19-year-old in December.

“It is difficult to get too over the top with these young players, because he has just come on to the scene, but he is going to be something special.”

Dublin added: “Do you know what it is? I don’t want to put any pressure on him, but he plays his game like Cole Palmer, doesn’t he? He plays free and easy, and he gets himself into good positions, rolls players and takes the ball well.”

Smriti Mandhana to skip WBBL again with an eye on India's upcoming domestic season

India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has opted out of the WBBL for the second year in a row, as she could play in the upcoming domestic season. She had skipped the 2022-23 WBBL as well to manage her workload and focus on her India commitments during a busy international year. This time, Mandhana did not put her name in the list of 122 players for the inaugural WBBL overseas draft, and might instead play for Maharashtra in the Indian domestic season which will run from October 19 to January 26 next year, and overlap with the WBBL.Related

The WBBL will also kick off on October 19 and go on until December 2, and will also clash partially with India’s busy international home season. India are set to host England and Australia from mid-December to mid-January for one Test each, and a combined nine ODIs and T20Is. Mandhana, apart from being deputy to captain Harmanpreet Kaur, is also an important all-format player for India.India’s women’s domestic season will begin with the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, to be played from October 19 to November 9. It will be followed by the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Trophy, from November 24 to December 4, while after a month, the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy will run from January 4 to 26. Among the senior women’s tournaments, the T20 Challenger Trophy and the Inter-Zonal One Day Trophy are missing from the calendar which was announced by the BCCI in April this year.Mandhana, who won the Women’s Hundred final with Southern Brave on Sunday, has played in three of the eight WBBL seasons so far, and represented Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder. The women’s calendar saw the addition of the inaugural WPL earlier this year, in which Mandhana was the most expensive player for INR 3.4 crore at the auction, and also captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore, who won just two of their eight games and finished second from bottom.

Rain could force Asia Cup matches out of Colombo

The city is scheduled to host five games in the Super four round and the final

Andrew Fidel Fernando and Danyal Rasool03-Sep-2023Wet weather could further impact the Asia Cup schedule with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) considering moving games in the Super Four round away from Colombo. Officials from Sri Lanka Cricket and the PCB have confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that they are looking at alternative venues in Sri Lanka where relatively drier weather is forecast.Although this is not the monsoon season in Sri Lanka, Colombo has had heavy rain in the last few days, leading to flooding in parts of the northern reaches of the city, not far from where the Khettarama Stadium is located. This, plus the washout of the Pakistan-India match in Pallekele on Saturday, has prompted fresh conversations between the ACC and the broadcasters Disney Star*.Related

Pakistan through to Super Fours after washout

Bumrah unavailable as India face Nepal in rainy Pallekele

September is often not an especially rainy month in Colombo as the northeast monsoon generally starts in October. Since 2015, the Khettarama ground, which is scheduled to host five Super Four games and the final between the 6th and 17th, has staged five men’s T20Is and four men’s ODIs in the month of September. All of those matches were completed and only two were rain-reduced.It is not clear to what extent tournament organisers have consulted with Sri Lanka’s meteorologists. Officials ESPNcricinfo talked to could not give specifics as to what kind of weather was expected in Colombo over the coming weeks. It is instead the washing out of the marquee India-Pakistan match that has raised alarm. If matches are moved out of Colombo, an alternative venue is also an issue. Dambulla had been suggested as an option, but it is understood India have not been satisfied with hotel and accommodation facilities there, while SLC officials claim there is work ongoing on the stadium floodlights – a long-standing issue the board has apparently not appropriately fixed. Dambulla lies in Sri Lanka’s “dry zone” and as such receives substantially less rainfall than both Kandy and Colombo at this time of year.Hambantota, which is also on the border of the dry and wet zones, could be another option. But that stadium is essentially located on the edges of a jungle and there are no close-by accommodation options. It would be a logistical hassle for SLC if matches are moved there.Broadcasters are also understood to be reluctant to split the remaining games across two venues, because it would either involve transporting equipment back and forth by road, or maintaining broadcasting infrastructure at two separate locations in Sri Lanka. If some or all matches are moved away from Colombo, it will further impact a tournament already beset by scheduling challenges. Pakistan are the tournament’s official hosts, but India’s refusal to play there has meant several teams shuttling back and forth between the two countries.
