Laura Harris creates WNCL history with 50-ball century

Harris’ record innings helped Queensland claim a comfortable win over ACT in a rain-reduced game

Laura Harris created history by smashing the fastest WNCL century, in just 50 balls, to help Queensland defeat Australian Capital Territory in a rain-reduced clash on the Gold Coast.Harris clubbed eight sixes and eight fours to make a stunning 101 from just 54 balls. Queensland posted 270 for 4 when rain ended their innings after 47 overs, with Mikayla Hinkley finishing on 65 not out. After a lengthy delay, ACT were set 205 in 27 overs and rain ended the match after 20.4 overs with ACT 47 runs short of the DLS par score.Harris’ innings was interrupted by rain, but it didn’t affect her ball-striking. She got off the mark first ball with a powerful pull shot forward of square. From there on, she produced some trademark blows over long-on as well as some stunning reverse sweeps and reverse laps. She did give one tough chance when on 46, with Gabrielle Sutcliffe completely misjudging a skied slog-sweep at deep midwicket. She failed to lay a hand on it as it cleared her head and bounced inside the rope for four to bring up Harris’ 50 off 23 balls. Her second 50 was fractionally slower, off 27 balls, but she brought up her century in style with a towering six over long-on.Hinkley played superbly at the other end as she and Harris shared a 127-run stand in less than 16 overs.ACT’s chase never really got going with the weather only adding to the frustrations. Georgia Prestwidge and Courtney Sippel made early breakthroughs, including the key wicket of Katie Mack, and ACT battled to 106 for 6 after 20.4 overs before rain finally ended proceedings with Queensland well ahead on DLS.Meanwhile, South Australia and the ACT have been penalised for slow over-rates during their WNCL matches on September 25. Following the calculation of allowances, the umpires and match referees found South Australia and the ACT to each be one over behind the expected rate. The two sides have been deducted 0.5 match points on the competition points table, in accordance with the WNCL playing conditions.

Head 152, Warner 106, England 142 all out

The pair put on a stand of 269 in 38.1 overs, falling just short of their own Australian record ODI partnership of 284

Australia 5 for 355 (Head 152, Warner 106, Stone 4-85) beat England 142 (Roy 33, Zampa 4-31) by 221 runs (DLS method)Life after Aaron Finch is proving a breeze for Australia with new opening pair Travis Head and David Warner piling up twin hundreds in a record-breaking partnership to hammer a listless England in the final ODI at the MCG a secure a series whitewash. The pair put on a stand of 269 in 38.1 overs, falling just short of their own Australian record ODI partnership of 284, to underpin Australia’s imposing total of 355 for 5 after the innings was reduced to 48 overs due to rain. They broke a host of records including becoming the second duo in ODI history to post two 250-plus runs stands behind India pair Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.Head continued his dominant year in ODI cricket scoring 152 from 130 balls, his second century and third overall, while Warner made 106 from 102 to post his first century for Australia in any format since January 2020, breaking a 68-innings drought. Head’s innings was even more extraordinary given he was fighting gastro, having struggled to take on food and fluids pre-game, and was unable to field.England are booked on a 6am flight out of Melbourne on Wednesday morning and played like they were already waiting for it as they slumped to their largest ODI defeat after winning the toss and electing to field. England’s intensity matched that of one of the smallest ODI crowds ever at the MCG of 10,406, on a miserable cold and wet Tuesday night in November, with the dead rubber resembling an Australian domestic one-day fixture. It was the lowest crowd at an MCG ODI since 1979. Two rain interruptions only dampened the mood further. All of England’s bowlers were collared at more than six runs per over. Olly Stone took four of the five wickets to fall but finished with the extraordinary figures of 4 for 85.Their chase was equally poor in pursuit of a DLS-adjusted target of 364, albeit they had the tougher of the batting conditions as the ball nipped and swung under lights. But it didn’t excuse a lack of intent from the top three and then a slew of poor shots from the middle-order as they folded to be bowled out for 142 in just 31.4 overs. Adam Zampa picked up 4 for 31 as all five Australian bowlers shared the wickets. The final margin of 222 runs surpassed England’s previous biggest loss of 219 runs. Australia could have ended the game sooner if they had not dropped four catches.Like Australia, England found some swing early on with the new balls on an overcast afternoon and Head enjoyed several slices of luck. He twice edged behind, flashing hard outside off stump, as one flew safely through a vacant third slip and the other escaped the grasp of Liam Dawson at second as he jumped high to his right. Head was also given out lbw onfield to Chris Woakes but had it overturned on review as it was pitching outside leg. From there Head found another gear, lashing England’s bowlers to all parts of the MCG on what turned into an excellent batting surface. Not even a brief rain delay could slow his momentum. The early swing subsided, and he feasted on the easy pace of England’s seam attack. He smashed 16 fours and four towering sixes, to reach his century off just 92 balls in the 27th over, celebrating by rocking his bat like a baby in acknowledgment of his recently born baby girl.David Warner had the chance to bring out the trademark leap•Getty Images

Warner was the silent partner for a large part of the partnership. He was on 62 when Head reached his century having barely taken a risk. He breezed to his 19th ODI century, punching a gift of a full toss from Stone wide of mid-off and celebrated with his trademark leap. It looked like a statement innings, moving to second on Australia’s all-time ODI centuries list just a day after he had vented his frustration at Cricket Australia for their handling of a review into his lifetime leadership ban.Australia were 217 for 0 at the second drinks break after 34 overs, having not struck a boundary in the previous five overs. Head and Warner then went into party mode smashing 52 from the next 24 balls as Head raced past 150. But both men holed out in the same Stone over to stall Australia’s momentum a touch. A second rain delay cut two overs off the innings and saw Marcus Stoinis fall attempting a wild swipe first ball after the break. But it allowed Mitch Marsh to come in and smash 30 off 16 balls to finish the innings.England never came close to chasing the adjusted target. Dawid Malan was caught behind cheaply while Jason Roy and James Vince opted to dig in rather than hit out as Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins proved extremely challenging under lights. The pressure eventually built as most of England’s batters had one foot on the plane home. Jos Buttler’s wild swipe across the line fourth ball to be caught off a leading edge for just 1, just nine days after holding the T20 World Cup aloft on the same ground, summed up England’s mindset. The game could have ended sooner had Australia’s catching been sharper. Zampa dropped two, including one off his own bowling that cost him three wickets in an over. Steven Smith missed a very difficult diving catch at slip, and substitute fielder Mackenzie Harvey, who was on for most of England’s innings as Head had felt ill after his innings, spilled another challenging chance at deep backward square having held another earlier on.To make matters worse for England, Phil Salt was subbed out of the game with concussion after suffering a head knock and shoulder injury in a fruitless chase and dive to save a boundary. Salt had his left arm in a sling post-match but it is believed to be precautionary. Moeen Ali was subbed into the game having been rested after Buttler returned as captain.

Imagine him & Igamane: Rangers line up move for "ruthless" striker

Glasgow Rangers do not have long left to do any more bits of work that they would like to do before the end of the winter transfer window tonight.

The Scottish giants have only added Rafael Fernandes on loan from French side Lille to bolster their squad so far, but they have been linked with an interest in RB Salzburg midfielder Bobby Clark.

Rangers are also reportedly keen on a deal to sign Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron, although it would be on a pre-contract to join in the summer.

The young dynamo is not the only Scottish Premiership talent on the club’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, though, as they have their sights set on a new striker.

Rangers lining up move for Scottish star

According to Football Insider, Rangers could still pursue a deal to bring Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland to Ibrox when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Technical director Nils Koppen is seemingly lining up a potential swoop to land the Scotland international on a free transfer, with this latest report revealing that the forward is still on the club’s list of targets for the summer.

Lawrence Shankland

The outlet states that the Gers are unlikely to bring a deal forward in the current transfer window but that they could move for the Scottish marksman ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Football Insider adds that there are ‘second thoughts’ within the club about a swoop for the striker, due to his age and form this season, but Koppen and Philippe Clement should fight against those thoughts and sign him on a free.

Why Rangers should sign Lawrence Shankland

The Gers have done a lot of great work in the transfer market in recent windows to fill the squad with exciting young talent, like Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Hamza Igamane, Mohamed Diomande, and Nicolas Raskin, among others.

Transfer Focus

However, you also need some experienced players on the pitch and in the dressing room. Shankland is a vastly experienced striker who could come in and mentor Igamane moving forward, whilst being a positive influence around the club – as evidenced by his captaincy with Hearts.

Rangers’ Moroccan marksman has produced nine goals and one assist in 13 Premiership starts, but is still learning as a young player at the age of 22 and could benefit from having a seasoned Premiership campaigner to lean on.

As you can see in the table above, Shankland has struggled in front of goal this season but showcased his incredible ability in the 2023/24 campaign.

Shankland, who Chris Sutton once described as a “ruthless” finisher, knows how to score goals in the league and may be content with a reserve role behind Igamane, given he turns 30 this summer.

He could be the perfect back-up striker for the Moroccan youngster by offering an experienced option to Clement, as a starter or off the bench, whilst Rangers could hope that he is able to get back to his best next term.

This would mean that the Gers would have a thriving and exciting young forward in Igamane alongside an experienced and lethal striker in Shankland, potentially making the perfect double act.

Pennant says Leeds "100%" must make double signing this summer – exclusive

Ex-Leeds United loanee Jermaine Pennant believes his former club should make a double signing this summer if they are promoted to the Premier League.

Leeds flying on track for promotion

As we enter the business end of the season, Leeds are in a very strong position to achieve their aim of promotion from the Championship, given that they are currently sitting seven points above third-placed Burnley.

The Whites have won four games on the spin in the second tier, and they strengthened their chances of ending their two-year absence from the Premier League with a dramatic 2-1 victory against promotion rivals Sunderland last time out.

A Wilson Isidor effort gave the Black Cats the lead just after the half-an-hour mark, but substitute Pascal Struijk was the hero in the second half, with the 25-year-old bagging a late equaliser before netting a stoppage-time winner to secure all three points at Elland Road.

The job is far from done, but Leeds chiefs are likely to have one eye on signings for the summer transfer window, and they may be particularly keen to tie down two loanees, who have played a key role in their push for promotion this season.

When asked whether he thinks Tottenham Hotspur’s Manor Solomon and AFC Bournemouth’s Joe Rothwell should be signed on a permanent basis, Pennant, who spent a season at Elland road in 2003-04 told Football FanCast: “100 per cent. Especially when you come into the Premier League, you need as much talent as you can. They’re two great players who have helped Leeds immensely.

“When you get players who have got you promoted, you want to keep that core and then invest around that for players who can adapt and play in the Premier League.

“So 100 per cent they need to sign players like that, it’s only gonna benefit them if they can.”

Leeds now keen on signing "infectious" player in summer transfer window

Leeds and Farke already have their eyes on one or two players they would like to sign if they reach the Premier League.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 17, 2025 Solomon and Rothwell must be signed permanently

Solomon has been a vital player for Daniel Farke this season, and the winger has been particularly impressive since the turn of the year, picking up four goals and four assists in his last eight matches.

At 25-years-old, the Israel international is only likely to improve, and he has previously put in some impressive performances in the top flight, bagging four goals in 19 top-tier games for Fulham, so there are indications he would be able to make the step-up.

Rothwell has also been integral to Leeds’ success, making 30 appearances and assisting both goals in the dramatic victory against Sunderland, with TEAMtalk’s James Marshment lauding the Bournemouth loanee as a “driving force” in Farke’s midfield.

Given the midfielder’s Premier League experience is limited, having only played a bit-part role for the Cherries, the 30-year-old may not be a regular starter next season, but his performances this season suggest he could be a good squad player at the very least.

Scouts wowed: Newcastle now want to sign £20m+ ace who’s outscoring Gordon

Newcastle United have now turned their attentions to a new forward as they look to hand Eddie Howe reinforcements at the end of the season, with their scouts having already watched him on several occasions this season.

Newcastle transfer priorities clear

Heading into the summer transfer window, Newcastle’s transfer priorities are crystal clear, but they remain constrained by the Premier League’s financial fair play rules that have hampered their spending thus far since the PIF took charge on Tyneside.

The Magpies are desperate to add a new centre-back to their ranks, having seen several bids for Marc Guehi rejected in the summer before being outgunned by Manchester City in January in their chase of Abdukodir Khusanov, who eventually ended up at the Etihad rather than St James’ Park.

Newcastle on verge of beating Real Madrid to deal for "exciting" new gem

He’s been a man in demand…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 13, 2025

There is now increased interest in Guehi with Tottenham among potential suitors, which could see Newcastle look at alternative options, but a defender is firmly on their wishlist.

Meanwhile, they continue to eye up a move for James Trafford as a long term replacement for Nick Pope, and the Magpies are also in need of a new forward following the departure of Miguel Almiron in January, with the Paraguayan winger completing a move to Atlanta United.

They have been linked with a move for Bryan Mbeumo in recent months, but the Brentford forward is set to cost a significant amount should he leave the Bees amid interest from across the Premier League.

Howe’s side also have a longstanding interest in Anthony Elanga and Noni Madueke, but both looked to be settled at their current clubs and again, would be costly to sign. Now though, they may have found a potential bargain alternative.

Newcastle target freescoring forward

That comes according to TEAMtalk, who report that Newcastle are now closely monitoring Celtic forward Nicolas Kuhn, who has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign under Brendan Rodgers.

The German winger has found the net 10 times in the Scottish Premiership, along with two strikes in the Champions League, and he has also created seven goals for teammates across those two competitions.

Scottish football pundit Marvin Bartley was full of praise for Kuhn earlier in the campaign, hailing his upturn in form.

“This season, he’s really taken a game by the scruff of the neck on so many occasions whether he starts or comes on as a sub. He’s been absolutely brilliant, breathtaking for them if I’m honest,” he explained.

Newcastle’s scouts have reportedly “been impressed by his superb displays” at Parkhead, while they add that “a move to England is of interest to Kuhn”, who was signed from Rapid Vienna for just £3m.

Now, he is worth much more, and it is claimed that he is valued by Rodgers and co. at around £26m, a fee that would see Celtic reluctantly cash in.

Due to their financial model, it is suggested that “if an offer comes in that matches their valuation they will not be able to turn it down”, while Kuhn’s wages are unlikely to be a stumbling block either, further helping the Magpies in their efforts to navigate financial fair play.

Still just 25-years-old, the German forward could prove to be a very affordable alternative to the established names already linked with St James’ Park, and could allow Howe’s side to strengthen further in other areas this summer as they eye a return to the Champions League.

Ashton Agar and Todd Murphy named in PM's XI with India tour in mind

Finger spinners Ashton Agar and Todd Murphy have been named in the Prime Minister’s XI squad to play West Indies in Canberra as national selectors look to give a range of spinners Australia A opportunities ahead of next year’s tour of India. The PM XI’s match is a four-day day-night first-class fixture starting on November 23 and is being used by the touring team as a warm-up for the two-Test series which begins in Perth on November 30.Australia’s selection panel is treating the game like an Australia A fixture, selecting a very strong squad that will be led by Test understudy wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and features Test squad member Marcus Harris and fringe Test seamer Michael Neser who played in the Ashes last year.Legspinner Mitchell Swepson was a notable absentee from the squad just 24 hours after being left out of the Test squad, having played in Australia’s last four Tests in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Jhye Richardson was also a notable omission given he took five wickets in Australia’s last pink ball Test in Adelaide last year.It is the first of effectively two Australia A fixtures that will be played this summer with another against South Africa in December. ESPNcricinfo understands that a range of players will be used across the two matches with the bowlers likely to be rotated. Both Swepson and Richardson could yet play for Australia A against South Africa in December. Swepson will also have a four-day red-ball Sheffield Shield fixture to play in for Queensland against South Australia at Adelaide Oval while the PM’s XI match is going on in Canberra, where he is likely to do a lot more bowling.Related

Jon Holland is the other spinner who has not been named in the PM’s XI squad having been drafted into both the Australia A Test squad in Sri Lanka midyear but he is currently recovering from injury. He too remains on the selectors’ radar. But it is instructive that both Agar and Murphy have been named given Australia’s Test team will tour India next year for four Tests in February and March.Swepson took 10 wickets at 45.80 and struck at 89.20 in his four recent Test appearances as the second spinner alongside Nathan Lyon. He did bowl better than those figures suggested at times, particularly in Sri Lanka, but his wrist spin was less effective at times than finger spin in those conditions.Agar was a chance to play in the most recent Test series in Sri Lanka until he suffered a significant side strain. Agar has not played Test cricket since 2017 and hasn’t played first-class cricket since April 2021 due to his commitments with Australia’s limited-overs sides. He has a middling first-class record overall averaging 41.28 and striking at 80.7. In the four Test matches he has played he has one less wicket than Swepson, averaging 45.55 and strikes at 97.1 but does have a slightly better economy rate.India’s success with finger spinners Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Axar Patel in home conditions has been noted by Australia. Left-arm orthodox Steve O’Keefe took 12 wickets in Australia’s last Test win in India in 2017 while New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel took 14 wickets including 10 in an innings in a Test in Mumbai in December last year.Chair of selectors George Bailey suggest on Wednesday, ahead of the PM’s XI squad announcement, that there could be some different names being looked at for the India tour compared to the squad picked for the home Tests against West Indies and South Africa.”I would envisage the tour to India may have some different names to it than what the tour does over the [Australian] summer, just because of the conditions,” Bailey said. “They are every chance to be very different. Because it’s an away tour you take a slightly bigger squad anyway. Plus it’s at the back of a [home] summer and there’s a reasonable amount of cricket that would have been played by then.”Glenn Maxwell hasn’t played first-class cricket since 2019•Getty Images

Glenn Maxwell could well come into contention for the India tour and may get the chance to play some first-class cricket in December for the first time since 2019. Maxwell will be available for Victoria’s last Sheffield Shield match before the BBL break against New South Wales on December 1 and possibly the Australia A game against South Africa ahead of the first Test in Brisbane on December 17, although Melbourne Stars’ first BBL match falls on December 13 which could create a scheduling conflict one way or the other.Peter Handscomb is also firmly back in the Test mix for the tour of India as he is in some of the best form of his career having scored runs consistently on a range of different surfaces around Australia over the last 18 months.”Pete remains absolutely on our radar,” Bailey said. “He was selected on the Australia A tour to Sri Lanka in the winter, [but missed it due to] having a baby at the same time. He’s started the season fantastically and finished the last Shield year fantastically.”Both he and Matt Renshaw have been named in the PM’s XI side and both played on Australia’s last tour of India in 2017. Renshaw is one of three specialist openers named in the PM’s XI alongside Harris and South Australia’s Henry Hunt. All three played in the same Australia A side in Sri Lanka midyear.Prime Minister’s XI squad vs West Indies: Josh Inglis (capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Aaron Hardie, Marcus Harris, Henry Hunt, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Matt Renshaw, Mark Steketee
