Spinners, Junaid rout Zimbabwe

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSaeed Ajmal finished with 11 for 118, his second-best Test performance•AFP

The probability of Zimbabwe holding out for a draw was extinguished early on the final morning, not by the expected threat Saeed Ajmal, but by Junaid Khan and Abdur Rehman. On a wearing pitch with turn and uneven bounce, Zimbabwe’s batsmen were simply ill equipped to combat a situation where only longevity at the crease, and not runs, mattered.Ajmal returned for a second spell late in the first session and cut through the tail, striking twice in an over to complete the fourth ten-wicket haul of his Test career. Pakistan took the nine wickets they needed during an extended session, and while they were always favourites to close out this contest, they might have expected Zimbabwe to be less feeble. With the luxury of runs, Misbah-ul-Haq deployed his catchers: three slips and a gully for Junaid, and a slip, a leg gully, a forward short leg and a short midwicket for Ajmal. As Zimbabwe’s batsmen prodded tentatively off front foot and back, the cries from these men grew louder.Junaid ensured Pakistan’s wait for success was brief. In his first over, he delivered one that angled into the right-hander from round the wicket but the ball did not bounce as much as Hamilton Masakadza thought it would from short of a length. He held his wrists around waist height, playing no shot, and the ball crashed into the bat near the gloves and popped up to gully. In his next over, Junaid trapped Vusi Sibanda lbw with one that kept lower. Zimbabwe were 19 for 3 before the coffee had cooled.Zimbabwe’s batsmen had a torrid time against Junaid. He sprinted in from round the wicket, targeting the stumps with the angle, and got several deliveries to beat the bat by straightening or seaming away from the right-handers. He did not take another wicket, though.Malcolm Waller and Sikandar Raza had begun to stitch a partnership together when Misbah replaced Ajmal with Abdur Rehman in the first over after the drinks break. Waller drove Rehman’s second ball to the straight boundary and then swept the third in the air and was caught at square leg.Zimbabwe’s middle-order batsmen got starts and they played shots but they could not last. Raza, another relatively set batsman, was caught at short leg, giving Rehman his second wicket and reducing Zimbabwe to 58 for 5.Elton Chigumbura was Zimbabwe’s last significant line of defence, and he found the boundary occasionally through the sparsely populated outfield. His last four came by pushing hard at a flatter ball from Rehman and edging past first slip. Rehman bowled a similar delivery next ball but slowed his pace, Chigumbura pushed forward again and this time the edge went straight to slip.Ajmal’s twin strikes came just before the scheduled lunch break, which prompted the umpires to extend the session by 15 minutes. It was only a matter of time. Towards the end of that extension, Rehman darted a flat one into Tinashe Panyangara’s pads. With Zimbabwe nine down, the umpires kept the players on for a little longer. Ajmal had the final word, taking his 11th wicket to give Pakistan their first Test win since February 2012, and Dav Whatmore’s maiden victory as their coach.

Hyatt, Philander blitz downs T&T

Danza Hyatt and Vernon Philander robbed 41 runs in 14 balls to post just enough for Jamaica Tallawahs as they beat Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel by five runs

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAdrian Barath’s wicket triggered a middle-order collapse for T&T•Getty ImagesDanza Hyatt and Vernon Philander smashed 41 runs in 14 balls to post just enough for Jamaica Tallawahs as Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel failed to muster similar momentum to overhaul an achievable target at Port-of-Spain on Wednesday and lost their third match in a row.Jamaica were benefited by a swift and solid start after being invited to bat with Chris Gayle and Ahmed Shehzad collecting 44 runs before the latter holed out in the sixth over. But stifled by lack of pace, Jamaica scored 13 in the next four overs. That pressure resulted in four quick wickets as Jamaica stumbled to 81 for 5 after 15 overs and then 107 for 6 in 18. Danza Hyatt, whose 42 off 26 balls was the source of most of Jamaica’s runs during that time, was joined by Vernon Philander and they dismantled T&T captain Dwayne Bravo’s bowling in the 19th over, collecting 26 runs courtesy three sixes and a four. The final over yielded 13 more to set up a target of 147 that looked unlikely after the slowdown during the middle overs.A 62-run second wicket partnership between opener Adrian Barath and Ross Taylor kept T&T steady. However, Barath’s wicket triggered a middle-order collapse as Taylor and Darren Bravo followed him to leave T&T at 82 for 4 in 14 overs. Dwayne Bravo and Nicolas Pooran kept the home team in the game, but neither was able to tackle a constantly swelling required rate which had reached nearly 13 by the last five overs. Bravo fell in the penultimate over and his team was left six runs short of victory.

Yasir Khan's blistering 87 helps Multan Sultans open their account

Sultans posted 228, and no Lahore Qalandars batter converted a start as the innings petered out for 195

Danyal Rasool22-Apr-2025Multan Sultans finally got their PSL 2025 campaign off the ground, brushing Lahore Qalandars aside by 33 runs. In the first game at home on a stiflingly hot evening in Multan, Yasir Khan’s blistering 87 off 44 balls at the top gave his side an eay advantage they never relinquished. Iftikhar Ahmed’s unbeaten 40 from 18 deliveries and cameos through the innings helped Sultans post 228 – the highest-ever score in Multan in the PSL.Qalandars never batted at the tempo needed to overhaul a total of that size, and Sultans’ bowlers were far more unerring in their execution. Michael Bracewell and Ubaid Shah found wickets up top as no Qalandars batter converted a start, and the innings petered out, stopping at 195 for 9.For Sultans, their opening pair of Yasir and Mohammad Rizwan began brightly, going after Shaheen Shah Afridi in his first two overs. But it was the takedown of Zaman Khan and Haris Rauf that set the tone. Bowling the fifth over, Zaman was plundered for three sixes and a boundary by Yasir. In the sixth, Rizwan picked off Rauf’s hard lengths at will, smashing him for 20 as Sultans soared to 79 in the powerplay.Asif Afridi, the only bowler who kept Sultans quiet, got rid of Rizwan, but Yasir kept powering along. He brought up his half-century with a six off Rishad Hossain, before he and Usman Khan went after Daryl Mitchell. Meanwhile, Rauf’s return only brought more misery upon Qalandars as Usman smashed him for another 19 runs; all told, Rauf would conceded 54 in his three overs. When Shaheen returned to bowl the final over, it was Iftikhar who found his range, taking 14 off a wayward over as Sultans surged to 228. Shaheen, Haris and Zaman, once the pride of Qalandars’ attack, had combined to concede 119 runs in eight overs.Michael Bracewell continued to do well for Multan Sultans•PCB

Sultans have failed to defend a higher total than this, but if Qalandars were to have a hope, they needed a vintage start from Fakhar Zaman. Initially, they appeared to get it when the opener went after David Willey, taking 30 runs off his first two overs, before smearing the parsimonious Bracewell for a six. In Ubaid’s first over, though, Fakhar heaved one that sailed above the Multan floodlights, but Josh Little held his nerve to cling on to a superb catch to cut his cameo down at 32 off 14 balls.Abdullah Shafique and Mitchell tried to keep the game alive through an enterprising third-wicket partnership that produced 36 from 22 deliveries. But the demands of the asking rate were much too stratospheric. Sultans responded with a triple strike to remove the pair as well as Rishad, thus leaving Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza as the final hopes for Qalandars.Billings was finding the middle of the bat, going after Little in an 11th over that produced 16 runs and brought the asking rate to just over 13 runs an over. Ubaid, too, went for a pair of sixes in the 15th over. But, crucially, Ubaid had the last laugh off the final delivery. Billings tried to heave over midwicket, but top-edged to Kamran Ghulam. Ubaid, meanwhile, comically struck Usman in the face as he celebrated his third wicket with a bit too much exuberance. The game, though, was done and dusted. Raza hung around and slapped a few huge sixes to bring the margin of defeat down, and off the final ball of the innings, brought up a 27-ball fifty. But Qalandars’ hope of victory had long dissipated, and the Multan crowd got to see their side launch a campaign that may just be taking off.

Stars secure fourth straight win

Two days shy of his 38th birthday, Brad Hodge put on a batting master-class to help the Melbourne Stars to a crucial win over the Adelaide Strikers

They speak of Twenty20 as a young man’s game, but the evergreen Brad Hodge, like Ricky Ponting, continues to dispel popular opinion. Two days shy of his 38th birthday Hodge put on a batting master-class, at one of his favourite and most prolific venues, the Adelaide Oval, to help the Melbourne Stars to a crucial win over the Adelaide Strikers.Hodge’s 88 from 58 balls featured ten fours and three sixes, but it was the purity of his timing, the stillness of his head, and the artistry of his placement which made it so much more. He spoke in a pre-game interview of the importance of a 360-degree range of stroke-play for modern batsmen in T20 cricket, and sure enough, like the old pro he is, he walked out and delivered what he spoke about.First he swept Johan Botha to the boundary. Then he uppercut Shaun Tait fine of third man before glancing him wide of fine-leg for consecutive fours in the third over. He drove elegantly through cover and lofted powerfully over long-on. He hit Botha miles into the stands to bring up 50 from just 39 balls. The following over he cut Tait twice, once through backward point, the other through cover, both hitting the fence before the bowler had completed his short follow-through.Hodge eventually fell to a full toss from Matt Johnston, which he drilled straight to deep midwicket, but he had already taken ten from the over with a delicate steer past short third man and a third six crushed into the construction site at long-on.Hodge was supported by small cameos all the way down the star-studded order, to set an imposing total of 8 for 175 after stand-in captain Cameron White chose to bat first. The Strikers were always just out of arms reach in the run chase. Tim Ludeman continued his exceptional form and Callum Ferguson played well but neither could convert their starts, both undone by clever slower-balls from James Faulkner. Clint McKay, Lasith Malinga, and Faulkner bowled tightly through the middle overs to strangle the Strikers. The use of slower-balls was the most damaging tactic. Faulkner’s fourth over, the 16th of the chase, cost just five runs and claimed the vital scalp of Ferguson. McKay followed that with an over comprised of three dot balls, two singles, and a leg bye to leave the Strikers needing 58 from the last 18 deliveries. The only danger was Kieron Pollard. He had scored just 27 runs, from 30 balls faced, when the 18th over began. He took 13 from John Hastings first four balls, before Johnston added two twos, making it 41 required from 12.Malinga then delivered one of his most expensive overs of the tournament. Fourteen runs were scored from seven balls, the extra ball cost three wides, as Pollard shelved his power-hitting for a delicate paddle sweep to find the rope.White had gambled by bowling out his big guns to ensure the Strikers had too many score off the last over. Unfortunately Pollard had put it within reach, with 27 runs required from six balls.Left-arm orthodox spinner Clive Rose, on T20 debut in the absence of Shane Warne, was asked by his stand-in captain to close it out. Pollard and Johnston managed singles from each of the first two balls to mean only a tie was possible. Pollard miscued short of the point rope to ensure the game was beyond his reach. Never has a man been more furious when hitting two sixes in excess of 100 metres off the last three balls of a match than Pollard was, when his team fell eight runs short despite his 65 not out.The Stars recorded their fourth consecutive win. The Strikers’ next assignment is against the only unbeaten team of the tournament – the Melbourne Renegades.

Onions doubtful for first Test

Graham Onions’ chances of playing in the first Test against South Africa were receded further when he was unable to train on Wednesday at the Oval because of a hamstring strain.

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2012Graham Onions’ chances of playing in the first Test against South Africa were receded further when he was unable to train on Wednesday at The Oval because of a hamstring strain.Onions, the Durham fast bowler, is in England’s 13-man squad as an extra pace bowler and after playing in the third Test against West Indies at Edgbaston had hoped to beat Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn for a place against South Africa. But he was not involved in Wednesday morning’s net practice. He has not yet been ruled out of contention to play when the first of a three-Test series starts on Thursday but the injury has not done his prospects any good. Even if fully fit, Onions faced stiff competition to fill a third seamer role, with Bresnan and Finn the leading candidates for the position.Onions has taken 32 wickets at 29.90 in nine Tests for England – including 10 wickets as England regained the Ashes in 2009. But he suffered a career-threatening back injury and was ruled out of the 2010 season, only returning to Test action as James Anderson and Stuart Broad were rested for the Edgbaston Test this summer, where he returned 4 for 88.

Our bowlers were clinical – Dravid

Rajasthan Royals’ captain Rahul Dravid has said his bowlers’ clinical performance was instrumental in their win over Pune Warriors on Tuesday

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2012Rajasthan Royals’ captain Rahul Dravid has said his bowlers’ clinical performance was instrumental in their win over Pune Warriors on Tuesday.”It was a very clinical performance, and hats off to my bowlers who did a fantastic job to restrict Pune to 125,” Dravid said. “It was a good all-round performance by everyone, especially the bowlers who set the game up for us by making us chase only 125. If we had to chase anything over 150 it would have been a tough game.”Good bowlers are the key, irrespective of whether they are fast or slow, they make a big difference and having a good quality bowling attack is really important. We do have some young bowlers in our side and a lot of our young bowlers have learnt a lot from this competition.”Warriors’ batsmen struggled against the pace of Shaun Tait who picked up three for 13. “We use Tait when we need a wicket, he’s our attack and shock bowler. Tait is our enforcer,” Dravid said. “When he is bowling well it makes a big difference to the team. It’s great to have him and Shane Waston performing well. Johan Botha is another critical member of our side; we also got a good spell out of Stuart Binny today, I though he bowled superbly.”We may make plans but I really believe it’s about execution,” he said. “You can make all the plans you want but at the end of the day you’re only as good as your bowlers who execute them, and I’m really happy that in the last couple of games our bowlers have done that.”Dravid said that Royals, who are currently fourth on the points table, behind Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians, needed to win a majority of their remaining matches to secure a berth in the play-offs. “We have four more games to go and we must focus on playing well,” he said. “If you win well it helps the net run rate but I think we must not worry about net run rate at this stage. With a couple of teams in contention it looks like 18 points will be needed [to make the play-offs] but we must not worry about what is needed but just play good cricket.”Dravid, who retired from international cricket in March this year, said that despite his retirement his routine hasn’t changed. “It has not been very different for me as I just quit international cricket and a couple of weeks later I was playing the IPL,” he said. “It has just been a continuation of my career. It will only be in June that I’ll have more time. For me it hasn’t felt any different at all, whatever I had been doing while playing international cricket, I’ve just continued with the same mindset and routine.”

Anti-corruption training for county overseas players

All overseas cricketers who sign up for a stint in English county cricket will be forced to complete the anti-corruption training

Andrew McGlashan22-Feb-2012All overseas cricketers who sign up for a stint in English county cricket will be required to complete the anti-corruption training that is now mandatory for domestic players in the wake of the prison sentence handed out to the former Essex seam bowler Mervyn Westfield for spot fixing. The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) is working closely with the ECB to ensure that non-English players cannot bypass the corruption course, even if their contract with a county side is a short one.During the sentencing of Westfield at the Old Bailey last week it was alleged that Danish Kaneria, the Pakistan leg spinner, was the go-between in a deal where Westfield was given £6000 to concede a set number of runs off an over during a Pro40 match against Durham in 2009.The PCA is already at an advanced stage in implementing online tutorials for all domestic players that must be completed before the 2012 season begins on April 5.Details of how to ensure 100% compliance with the new regime are still being hammered out with the ECB, but the PCA is insistent that every player in county cricket should take the course.”We want all overseas players to go through this process and we need to decide how much time they have to complete the process,” Angus Porter, the PCA chief executive, said. “We are currently in discussions with the ECB about the mandatory element.”The involvement of all overseas players brings additional challenges. One part of the process that still needs to be developed is to have the course available in multi-lingual formats for players whose first language is not English, one of 11 recommendations made by the MCC’s anti-corruption working party which has sent its full report to the ICC on Wednesday.”The language point is a good one and something we don’t have yet but we are very aware that it is something we need to explore,” Porter said.Despite events of recent weeks, Porter remains adamant that English cricket has the best anti-corruption systems available. “I have to say I think the level of anti-corruption training on offer to our domestic and England players is superior to anything on offer worldwide.”The MCC working party praised the ECB’s decision to create an amnesty for players to report suspicions about corruption and said that other boards should follow their lead. It is an offence for a player not to report an approach but the ECB has given players until April 30 to make concerns known.Following its January meeting in Cape Town the MCC world cricket committee produced ten recommendations for tackling corruption and an eleventh has been included on the final report submitted to the ICC asking for the ECB’s approach to be mirrored worldwide.”National Cricket Boards should follow the example of England and Wales Cricket Board in offering a short-term amnesty to any player or other person involved in cricket who, within the designated period, reports an approach or other suspicions or knowledge of illegal activity of a corrupt kind,” the working party said.Other MCC recommendations made at a meeting of their world cricket committee in Cape Town last month included lifetime bans for any captain, vice-captain or coach found guilty of fixing and the removal of minimal sentences in the ICC’s anti-corruption code to allow disciplinary panels more flexibility in sentencing.Steve Waugh, who chaired the MCC anti-corruption working party, said: “Cricket’s administrators need to be bold in their actions and cannot be complacent in the fight against corruption. I have for some time advocated the idea of amnesties for players or officials so am particularly pleased to see the ECB’s stance on this issue. I now hope that ICC takes on board what our committee – and what players around the world – are saying and we can stamp out corruption in the sport.”Edited by David Hopps
