Wellington Women clinch State League Twenty20

ScorecardAfter a two-wicket loss to Canterbury Women in the domestic 50-over final yesterday, Wellington Women had their revenge with a last-over win in the State League Twenty20 final at the Basin Reserve. Chasing 124 to win, Wellington knocked off the runs with three deliveries to spare. The Wellington opener Lucy Doolan played a significant role in the chase, hitting 63 off 51 deliveries. Wickets fell around Doolan, but she stood firm to anchor the chase. Her dismissal, stumped by Rowan Milburn off the bowling of Frankie Mackay in the 15th over, left Wellington 91 for 5. Liz Perry’s 22 from 23 balls, without a boundary, took the game into the final over but she was run out first ball, with five still to get. Anna Dodd and Melinda Hodgson saw Wellington through with three balls to spare.Having elected to bat, Canterbury were given a 57-run opening stand from Mackay and Maria Fahey. It was Doohan who snapped it, dismissing Mackay for 20 off 24 balls. The offspinner Anna Dodd then bowled Fahey six deliveries later, triggering a collapse to 123. Amanda Cooper took three scalps with Sophie Devine, Dodd and Doolan picking up two each.Wellinton’s win was fair reward for a side that have set the bench mark for women’s domestic cricket all season.

Laterais: Bruno, Edimar e Junior Tavares
Zagueiros: Rodrigo Caio, Lucão, Lugano, Maicon e Eder Militão
Volantes: Wesley, Cícero, Thiago Mendes, Jucilei e Araruna
Meias: Cueva, Thomaz e Lucas Fernandes
Atacantes: Lucas Pratto, Gilberto, Wellington Nem, Marcinho e Denilson

Rescheduling a 'highly complex challenge'

The organisers of the Champions Twenty20 League are gearing up for intense negotiations in the coming weeks to get the inaugural edition of the tournament back on the road

Sources spoke of “working around” a Cricket Australia board meeting on December 5, while the reported the meeting would be held on December 8 in Cape Town. The obvious concern is over finding a new window in the packed international calendar early next year (see box), though the organisers are extremely hopeful that some adjustment can be made, considering that most of these matches involve Australia and South Africa, both of whom are founding partners of the event.”We are working towards a position from where we can hold the tournament in India early next year,” Sundar Raman, the Champions League chief executive, told Cricinfo. “There will be discussions with all stakeholders in the next 10-12 days. We are working on it and we are confident that a satisfactory resolution can be arrived at.”As of now, the organisers and ESPN-STAR Sports (ESS), the broadcasters who struck a ten-year deal for US$975 million to telecast and market the event, are on the same page and relatively safe, in the sense that the financial cycle for them will continue to be that of ten years. “If it’s not Year 1-Year 10, then it’s Year 2-Year 11, so that is not really a huge worry,” a source said. “There will be some kind of financial hit because of the postponement, but the larger picture remains unaffected. If any payments have been made, they will be adjusted in the coming years.” ESS, incidentally, were yet to name a title sponsor with just a few days to go for the tournament’s original start date [it was scheduled to be held from December 3-10 in Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai].The real losers, if the tournament is delayed beyond the next three-four months, could be the eight teams that qualified for the event by virtue of being the Twenty20 domestic finalists in their respective countries. “The way the cards are stacked, it looks extremely difficult,” an IPL franchise official said. First on the firing line are the four teams from Australia – Victoria and Western Australia – and South Africa – Titans and Dolphins. The current domestic schedules indicate that Australia and South Africa would have completed their next Twenty20 tournaments, which act as the qualifiers for the Champions League, by February 21, which will possibly throw four new qualifiers in the fray.James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, told the that the “planned approach is a 12-month postponement”. Victoria, one of the present qualifiers, said they have got an assurance from Cricket Australia following Sutherland’s remarks. “We have made arrangements in good faith and we would certainly hope our qualification would be respected,” Tony Dodemaide, the Cricket Victoria chief executive, told the .

Australia’s Twenty20 Big Bash is scheduled from December 26-January 24, and South Africa’s Standard Bank Pro20 event is to be held from January 21-February 21. “It would be pretty tough if we didn’t qualify in January,” Victoria’s Brad Hodge was quoted in the . “Everyone was excited about it and this competition ticks over in the back of your mind while you’re playing so it would be pretty disappointing if we can’t compete in it … I know players had budgeted for it; that is what you do. I hope they hadn’t spent it,” he said.”We don’t have any information from the organisers yet but the situation, as we see it now, is complicated,” a source in one of the participating teams said. “If the Champions League is held after these domestic tournaments, who will qualify: the new winners, assuming they are different? If the league decides to go with the old winners, you have a bizarre situation where this season’s champions qualify for next season’s Champions League. Now, if the new winners are the qualifiers, what happens to the other four teams from India, England and Pakistan? The one solution is to postpone the internal schedules of Australia and South Africa, but that – if at all possible – will only lead to further disruptions down the line.”The losses for the teams that miss out are substantial. The Champions League offers a general annual pot of US$6m, with $3m for the winners, and more importantly, a minimum guaranteed participation fee of US$250,000 for each of the eight teams. There is also individual sponsorships the teams have worked out. The two IPL teams, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, are believed to have sold 100% of their inventory for the tournament, mostly in the form of associate sponsors and uniform logos. Middlesex has sold at least 80% of their inventory and the Australian and South African teams have also managed local sponsorship. A large part of this is promised money, in the sense that the money will be paid during or after the tournament, but these were funds the teams had already factored in, and were banking on.In Western Australia’s case, there is more money in the balance. The team had an arrangement with Vikas Rambal, an Indian-born businessman, which saw it change its name to Rambal Warriors specifically for the event. Sources said the team was to get a few thousands more from the organisers for letting Michael Hussey, their star batsman, appear for Chennai Super Kings. For the two Indian teams, meanwhile, the primary concern is to ensure that their foreign players agree to tour India so soon after the terror strikes in Mumbai. A franchise official highlighted the immediate reaction from Shane Warne, the skipper of Rajasthan Royals, after the Mumbai strikes to indicate the current mood among these players. “It is just not worth the risk,” Warne said. “No amount of money is worth the risk with what is going on over there at the moment.”

Everton learn Nunes price tag

An update has emerged on Everton target Matheus Nunes, regarding how much Sporting want for his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Portuguese outlet Record (print edition, August 17, page 8), via Sportslens, Everton can land midfield target Matheus Nunes for £17m (€20m) this summer.

The Toffees are interested in a deal for the central midfielder and now know how much Sporting want in return for his services.

Gomes replacement

One player who could be on their way out of Goodison Park before the end of the window is midfielder Andre Gomes. Benfica have been touted with interest in his signature, with his future at the club said to be uncertain at this moment in time.

This suggests that there is a possibility that he could leave the club in the coming weeks, should Rafa Benitez decide to axe him from the squad. That would then open the door for a deal to sign Nunes from Sporting as a direct replacement for Gomes.

Nunes is six years younger than the Portuguese international and could offer Everton more value in the long-term, whether that be in the way of a potential sell-on in the future or by playing for the club for many years.

His former teammate, Goncalo Santos, hailed his ability with the ball at his feet as unbelievable and pointed to his immense speed as one of his biggest strengths.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “In one game, he went on a run which was about 60 metres, it was amazing! People went crazy and everybody was talking about it.

“It’s unbelievable when he has the ball at his feet. Nobody can catch him; it’s impossible because he’s too fast.

“Matheus is a box-to-box player. He’s not so strong like midfielders in the Premier League but he’s very fast. He’s very good with the ball because he is a Brazilian boy.”

This highlights some of the qualities he could bring to Goodison Park and why he could be an exciting signing, with his dribbling skills potentially being able to get fans off their seat when he gets the ball.

The 22-year-old averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.75 in Liga NOS for Sporting in the 2020/21 campaign. He won 56% of his total duels and lost possession 5.6 times per match. Gomes, meanwhile, averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.58 in the Premier League last term. He only won 42% of his total duels and lost possession 8.4 times per match.

Whilst it is impossible to judge the difference in quality between the Premier League and Liga NOS, the statistics from Nunes suggest that there is potential there for him to come in and be an upgrade on Gomes.

Although, with time being on his side at the age of 22, there would be no immediate concern if he does not make an instant impact at the club.

Toffees director of football Marcel Brands needs to sanction the £17m swoop before the end of the window on August 31st.

Ponting to notch up 300 ODIs

Ricky Ponting will play his 300th one-day international on Friday and West Indies should be worried

Ricky Ponting will play his 300th one-day international on Friday and West Indies should be worried. Arguably no player has lifted as consistently for his milestone matches as Ponting, which is peculiar as he insists such landmarks mean little to him. Ponting made centuries in his 50th, 150th and 250th ODIs, as well as a half-century in his 100th one-day international and a pair of hundreds in his 100th Test.In Grenada he will join Steve Waugh as the only Australians to appear in 300 one-day internationals and Ponting said it was yet another achievement that he would not truly appreciate until after he retired. “It’s all probably something I’ll look back on when I’m finished and be proud of,” Ponting told . “I’ve never been one to even talk about such things in the rooms or anything like that.”I said when I played 100 Tests I was probably as proud of that achievement as anything else, being in the game for that long. So again, I guess this is a good achievement because it says that you’ve been in the game for a long time.”Although Ponting claims not to remember his mammoth efforts in milestone games, they have been so frequent that it is hard to believe they are coincidences. His highest ODI score of 164 came in his 250th match, the Johannesburg game that will mostly be remembered for Australia scoring a world-record 434 then having it chased down by South Africa. Until that point his best one-day score was 145, posted against Zimbabwe in his 50th ODI.In his 100th he managed 50 against Pakistan, he scored 119 against England in his 150th game, and in his 100th Test he starred with 120 and 143 at the SCG against South Africa. On this Caribbean tour he has already passed 10,000 Test runs but it was one of his least remarkable landmark performances that Ponting remembers most, when he made 10 in Harare in his 200th ODI.”I remember Tim Nielsen, who was the assistant coach at the time, making up a shirt and drawing something in black texta all over a white T-shirt and then presenting it in the warm up to me,” Ponting said. “That was about as good as it gets.”At 33, Ponting has plenty of time ahead of him to build on his memorable – or for him, forgettable – milestone achievements. For now, he just wants to end a slight dip in ODI form that has resulted in single-figure scores in his past four innings, while West Indies are hoping that history does not repeat when he joins the 300 club on Friday.

Taylor seals win with last-ball six

A round-up from the latest Twenty20 Cup matches where there are some incident-packed games

Jacques Rudolph and Anthony McGrath added 121, both hitting half centuries, although Yorkshire were made to sweat for their six-wicket win against Leicestershire, the match coming down to the last ball at Grace Road. Yorkshire began the final over needing seven, but just four singles came from five balls. It left Chris Taylor – only playing because of an injury to Craig White – needing three off the last delivery, and he did it in style with a six off Jim Allenby. Rudolph (56) and McGrath (59) did most of the work after coming to the crease at the same time. In a bizarre incident, Michael Vaughan was run out and Andrew Gale retired hurt off the same ball. Vaughan turned for a second, only to see Gale flat-out with a twisted ankle. Vaughan couldn’t beat a direct hit from Jacques du Toit, while Gale also had to leave the field. HD Ackerman anchored Leicestershire innings with 57 off 51 balls, but despite some meaty blows from Dillon du Preez their total wasn’t quite enough and they remain winless.Click here for John Ward’s report on a high-scoring game between Lancashire and Durham at Old TraffordMid/West/Wales DivisionRob White chose the perfect time to hit his best Twenty20 score as Northamptonshire chased down 171 to beat Gloucestershire at Milton Keynes. White’s brilliant 94 off 57 balls, including eight fours and three sixes, ensured Northamptonshire had 10 balls to spare in their chase. Nicky Boje helped him complete the job, although his share of a 110-run stand was just 27. White’s hitting took the limelight away from Hamish Marshall’s dazzling display after he’d launched 59 off 33 deliveries. Gloucestershire lost Craig Spearman early, forced to retire hurt after a delivery from Johan van der Wath cracked into his helmet causing a cut.Warwickshire kept themselves in touch near the top of the group with a seven-wicket victory against local rivals Worcestershire at New Road. Jonathan Trott produced a measured innings at the top of the order as Warwickshire reached their target with 10 balls to spare, but Worcestershire didn’t help their cause with some sloppy fielding. Despite losing just four wickets, Worcestershire struggled to build momentum during their innings after the initial aggression from Vikram Solanki and Graeme Hick was broken. Solanki continued to a 48-ball 50, but the Warwickshire bowlers did a good job restricting the scoring in the later overs. Spinners Ant Botha and Ian Salisbury proved difficult to attack and Man-of-the Match Neil Carter’s four overs went for a miserly 14 runs.Peter Trego’s 79 off 50 balls put Somerset on course for their first Twenty20 win of the season with a 15-run success against Glamorgan at Taunton. Herschelle Gibbs kept the visitors in with a chance, taking Glamorgan to 117 for 1 in the 13th over alongside Robert Croft. But Croft was caught at backward point for a 37-ball 50 and the run chase lost its way. Somerset had got off to a shaky start, losing Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer cheaply, but Trego played a mature innings. He added 59 for the fourth wicket with Craig Kieswetter, who should have been run out on 4 but Croft fluffed the take at the bowler’s end. It was a costly error.South DivisionDanish Kaneria played a key role in helping Essex to a seven-wicket victory against struggling Sussex at Hove. Kaneria’s four overs cost just 18 runs and included the key wickets of Murray Goodwin and Chris Adams. Goodwin was well-set on 47 and preparing for a late charge when he was bowled by Kaneria, who earlier trapped Adams lbw for 2 as he attempted a reverse sweep. From 123 for 3 Sussex’s innings fell away dramatically as the last seven wickets went for 21 in 21 balls. Essex stuttered slightly at 69 for 3, but an unbroken partnership of 77 between Grant Flower and James Foster made the target appear very comfortable as victory came with three overs to spare. The defeat all but ends Sussex’s hopes of making the knock-out stages.
