IPL 2012 from April 4 to May 27

The fifth edition of the IPL will be held from April 4 to May 27, 2012. The tournament is scheduled after India’s return from their tour of Australia and South Africa’s tour of New Zealand in March. The tournament will feature 74 matches – the same as this year’s IPL – and the match schedule will be announced soon. The structure of the Future Tours Programme [FTP] is one of the major points up for discussion in the ongoing ICC annual conference in Hong Kong, amid calls for a separate window for the IPL within that schedule. There are several series next year that are expected to overlap with the IPL, and may result in the absence of some international stars. England are scheduled to host West Indies, Australia are expected to tour the West Indies, and Pakistan are due to play Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The 2011 IPL took place barely a week after the World Cup, and the arrival of some Australian cricketers, including Shane Watson, was delayed due to their tour of Bangladesh. The number of teams grew from eight – as in the previous three versions – to ten, with Sahara Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joining the league but failing to qualify for the knockouts. Chennai Super Kings defended their title successfully, beating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.

Nyoka removal unlawful, should be reinstated – Court

A Johannesburg court has ruled that Cricket South Africa’s decision in February to remove Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka as president was unlawful and that he should be reinstated with immediate effect. However, CSA are appealing the decision of the south Gauteng High Court and told ESPNCricinfo that Nyoka would not return to his position until the appeal process is complete.Nyoka was ousted in a vote of no-confidence two months ago, 18 months before his term was due to end. The presidents of the 11 affiliates voted 9-2 to have Nyoka removed. CSA did not want to reveal the reasons for the decision but it came after Nyoka challenged them in court.”The applicant (Dr Nyoka) was removed because of his lack of leadership, his inability to communicate properly with the respondent’s board and management team, his erratic behaviour and his personal vendetta against [CSA chief executive Gerald] Majola,” AK Khan, CSA’s Acting President said in the body’s founding affidavit.CSA’s lawyers argued that “reasonable steps” had been taken to ensure Nyoka had notice of the February 12 special general meeting in which he was removed. Nyoka chose not to attend on the advice of his lawyer.Deputy Judge-President Phineas Mojapelo, hearing the case on Friday, found that Nyoka did not receive proper notice of the meeting that was set up to remove him from office, that the proceedings in the motion of no confidence were invalid and that Nyoka’s right to be heard before the decision was taken to remove him was violated.Nyoka’s spat with Majola is thought to be the central factor in his falling out with the board. Nyoka questioned the financial irregularities in CSA’s bonus payment structure after Majola and 39 other staff members were awarded bonuses after the hosting of the IPL and Champions Trophy in 2009.Bonuses worth R4.7 million (US$671, 238) were paid out after the events and were not fully declared to CSA’s remunerations committee (REMCO). CSA said that this was in keeping with precedents set from the 2003 World Cup, when bonuses were not issued through REMCO. Nyoka called for an external investigation into the affair but CSA decided to exhaust their internal measures first and held their own commission of inquiry, under Khan. The investigation cleared Majola of any wrongdoing but cautioned him against making “errors of judgement” and said that all future payments would have to go through REMCO. Nyoka accepted the findings at the time but was believed to be unhappy with them. If he is reinstated, it would no doubt prompt a reopening of the matter which may force CSA to make public their financial affairs. Part of Nyoka’s demands in the case is that CSA will have to reveal certain financial information.Nyoka left court shortly before the judgment was handed down to depart; he is believed to have flown to Kenya and could not be reached for comment.

Spurs: Kane left a passenger at Liverpool

Harry Kane was left a mere passenger as Tottenham Hotspur held out for a draw against title-chasing Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Perhaps it was a by-product of the way Antonio Conte set up his side but the England skipper struggled to have any sort of influence on the game as a late, deflected Luiz Diaz strike salvaged a point for the home side.

Heung-min Son had opened the scoring in typical fashion, slotting home from six yards out after Ryan Sessegnon squared the ball across the box for his 20th Premier League goal of the season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

But in lasting the whole 90 minutes, Kane was pretty anonymous barring one or two flashes at goal. He registered the fewest touches of any Spurs starter (35), three less than goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (38), who was also much better in possession.

Indeed, the £90m-rated talisman made only 50% of his passes, attempting just 18 all match. By comparison, Lloris made 20 successful passes, which includes goal kicks and was more than Kane’s overall attempts, via SofaScore.

Kane also struggled to make much of an impact inside the box, failing to register a single shot on or off target, with his only effort being blocked.

Meanwhile, from his 35 touches, he lost possession 16 times, meaning he gifted the ball back to Jurgen Klopp’s Reds once every two times he had the ball, which was also once every 5.6 minutes.

The 28-year-old striker is in a rough patch right now, scoring just once in his last seven league outings but he’s always going to struggle to find the net if he’s only seeing the ball every five or six minutes – he certainly won’t get on the scoresheet without a shot on target either.

As The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick wrote in his post-match ratings column, the Lilywhites forward was ‘a yard off the pace, which hampered Spurs’ ability to play on the counter,’ whilst he was among Alasdair Gold’s worst-rated starters, too.

Kane may have had a big part to play in Son’s opener, providing a sublime pass to Sessegnon out wide but aside from that, he was left a shadow of his goalscoring best.

The Englishman was once dubbed a “monster” by his South Korean teammate for his efforts in a 4-1 win over this very team back in 2017, so to deliver this sort of performance is a big contrast.

Fewer touches than the goalkeeper, no shots on target – Kane certainly suffered as a striker at Anfield but that’s not his fault, given the way Conte set up his side this weekend.

Journalist makes Kessie to Spurs claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie as the Lilywhites also reportedly close in on Adama Traore.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye move…

The Ivory Coast international has been a transfer target for Spurs since the beginning of the January transfer window with reports suggesting manager Antonio Conte is ready to make a move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to ESPN, Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici was weighing a lucrative offer to sign Kessie earlier this month with The Telegraph since claiming that they are in fact weighing a move.

Conte is apparently a ‘huge fan’ of the San Siro ace with Mokbel sharing what he knows on the situation.

The Latest: Mokbel makes claim…

The Lilywhites are expected to come to an agreement with Wolves for Traore, say The Athletic, and speaking to GMS, the Mail reporter says that a deal to sign Kessie is also ‘doable’ before the January 31 deadline.

I think that is certainly a deal that could be doable and I think that could be doable sooner rather than later,” he explained.

“I’m talking this window, if both clubs can come to an agreement.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Signing a midfielder is reportedly one of Conte’s four transfer priorities at Spurs and we believe they don’t come more accomplished than Kessie.

The 52-cap star, despite a being a natural defensive midfield player, has been utilised in a more advanced role at Milan under Stefano Pioli and has thrived – scoring 19 goals since the beginning of 2020/2021 and adding to his career total of 46 (Transfermarkt).

He’s even called ‘sumptuous’ by his manager, and if Tottenham could either land him on a free deal in the summer or this month for a cheaper fee, we believe he could provide a real injection of threat in Conte’s midfield alongside Traore.

Celtic dealt McGree transfer blow

Celtic have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to bring Riley McGree to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Anthony Joseph, with the Sky Sports journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that, despite earlier reports suggesting that the 23-year-old’s switch from Charlotte FC to Celtic was all but a done deal, talks between the midfielder and Ange Postecoglou’s side have now broken down over personal terms.

Joseph went on to state that the Bhoys and the MLS side had agreed a £2.5m deal for the transfer of the Australia international, however, with the player being yet to put pen to paper on a contract at Parkhead, Championship side Middlesbrough now believe they are still in with a chance of landing McGree this month.

In his post, the journalist said: “Talks between Celtic and Charlotte FC’s Riley McGree have stalled at this stage. The clubs agreed an initial fee of £2.5m. Discussions have broken down over personal terms & the player has not signed any deal yet. Middlesbrough believe they are still in the race.”

Postecoglou will be fuming

Considering just how impressive McGree has been while on loan at Birmingham City this season, in addition to the fact that Postecoglou appears extremely keen to secure a deal for the midfielder this month – with the 56-year-old personally involving himself in negotiations with the player – the news that talks have broken down with the 23-year-old is sure to have left the Bhoys boss fuming.

Indeed, over his 13 Championship appearances this term, the £540k-rated man bagged two goals, registered two assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.8 shots and making 1.4 key passes per game.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

The £5.7k-per-week player also impressed in metrics more typical of his central midfield position, making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.2 tackles, 22 passes and winning 4.8 duels per league fixture, with these returns seeing McGree average a SofaScore match rating of 7.02 – ranking him as Birmingham’s sixth-best player in the second tier.

As such, it is clear to see that McGree would make a fantastic addition to Postecoglou’s current options in the middle of the park.

However, following Joseph’s latest update, it would seem as if a deal for the 23-year-old is far from done just yet – something that will undoubtedly come as a huge blow to the Greek-Australian manager.

Woakes hundred tilts the balance

ScorecardChris Woakes underlined his all-round potential with a sparkling 136 not out•Getty Images

A high-class century from Chris Woakes led a spirited Warwickshire fightback on the second day of the championship match with Hampshire at Edgbaston. From the depths of 98 for 7, Woakes helped Warwickshire add 284 for the last three wickets, recording century stands for the ninth and tenth wickets. It was a highly impressive innings from a 21-year-old with a bright future. Woakes may have made his name as a fine swing bowler, but his batting also promises much. This, his second first-class century, was studded with pulls and drives that bore the hallmark of real class and underlined the impression that Warwickshire have developed an all-rounder of great potential.Already he has largely filled the gaping hole left at Edgbaston by the retirement of Dougie Brown and his efforts earned Warwickshire the upper hand in a game that had appeared beyond them. Can Woakes prosper at international level? Perhaps. While he lacks the pace of most Test bowlers, he is no slower than Chaminda Vaas and, with the ability to swing the ball both ways at will, will trouble most batsmen in the right conditions. On this evidence, he is also every bit good enough to bat at seven. He showed some character here, too. Coming to the crease with his side in disarray, he timed the ball delightfully from the start and, by taking a positive approach, appeared to unsettle Hampshire’s gameplan.Woakes (200 balls, 17 fours and two sixes) was lent good support, first by Tim Ambrose, then by Neil Carter and finally by Imran Tahir. Though Ambrose undid much of the good impression he had made by upper cutting obligingly to the man placed for the shot at third-man, Carter (80 balls, eight fours and a six) counter-attacked in typically ferocious style and Imran (45 balls, seven fours and one six) chanced his arm against his former county with good effect. The ninth-wicket partnership was a new county record against this opposition, overhauling the stand of 88 set by the splendidly named Rusty Scorer and Gerard Rotherham here in 1921.Hampshire, however, will reflect that they played a significant hand in their own downfall. Not only did they squander a series of chances in the field, but they became ragged and rattled as a game that was at their mercy slipped away.Where the bowlers had been content to aim for the top of off-stump and allow a pitch that remains helpful to do the rest, they suddenly attempted to bounce out Warwickshire. At one stage Imran, a fellow without too many batting pretensions, thrashed 14 in three balls off James Tomlinson, with an upper cut six the highlight.Hampshire must bitterly dislike playing against Woakes, too. His other first-class century was also against them and, in three first-class games, he has scored 275 runs without being dismissed.Woakes was on 77 when the ninth-wicket fell. Sensing he would need to accelerate if he were to reach his century, he drove two sixes over cover off Griffiths and also unleashed a thunderous drive, on the up, off Kabir Ali.Hampshire wilted under the assault. Though their bowlers had little luck – with a series of edges flying agonisingly wide of fielders – their catching was simply poor. If the most costly miss came when Woakes, on nine, edged Kabir between second and third slip, the most embarrassing came when Carberry missed a ‘dolly’ off Imran Tahir. Warwickshire added another 50 damaging runs before Imran finally ran out of luck and edged another attempted slash over the slips.Woakes’ performance was in marked contrast to his top-order colleagues. Warwickshire’s specialist batsmen were, not for the first time this season, swept aside with alarming ease through a mixture of good bowling and feckless batting. At one stage they lost three wickets in six balls without adding a run.Though there was little that Darren Maddy could do about the beauty that bounced and left him, the rest had less excuse. Jonathan Trott tried to play an outswinger through mid-wicket and sent a leading edge to slip, Ian Bell was punished for chasing a wide one, Rikki Clarke edged a lavish drive and Ant Botha fished at one he could have left. With Jim Troughton leg before to a fast, straight ball, Warwickshire had lost five wickets for 22 runs.At that stage, Kabir had figures of four for 16. Very well he had bowled, too. Swinging the ball at a decidedly brisk pace, he richly deserved the third successive five-wicket haul that would have been his if only his slip cordon had not proved so porous. If there’s a better bowler in county cricket, this writer has not seen them.”I’ve worked very hard on my batting,” Woakes said afterwards. “I’d like to bat at seven ideally and be considered a genuine all-rounder. I think I’ve added some pace to my bowling over the winter, but it’s not been. I don’t want to add 5 mph and find that I’ve lost my swing. It’s nice when I hear people saying I could play for England, but it’s not something I dwell on. If I keep taking wickets for Warwickshire, that will take care of itself.”Meanwhile Hampshire are giving a trial to Ashfaq Afridi, brother of Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi. Ashfaq, who has a British wife, is not classed as an overseas player.
