Bruno Henrique retorna ao time e quer Palmeiras líder do Brasileiro

Flurry of wickets puts Moti Bagh pitch in spotlight

Thirty-five wickets have fallen at Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara in days. That is, in six sessions of play. Importantly, 31 of those 35 wickets have been claimed by the spinners. No other match in this Ranji Trophy has seen so many wickets fall in so short a time. Madhya Pradesh have already lost five wickets, chasing an improbable 337 for victory against hosts Baroda. It is easy then to wonder if the Moti Bagh pitch is fair or unsporting. While the ground’s curator and the visiting coach are not too fussed about the track, the BCCI seems to have taken note of the flurry of wickets, and an inspection is likely.According to the groundsman, Vishvjeet Sinh Padhiyar, neither the umpires nor the match referee had shown any concern about the pitch. But Sanjay Patel, the BCCI secretary, who is from Baroda, while saying there was nothing alarming about the pitch, admitted that he had asked the board’s ground and pitches committee to submit a report on it.”The BCCI ground and pitches committee will write to the Baroda Cricket Association asking for a report for certain. The ball is turning too early,” another senior board official said. “The BCCI directive has been to ask curator to prepare pitches where there should be gradual wear and tear. Such pitches need to be looked into by the ground and pitches committee.”Padhiyar, though, said the slew of wickets was because most of the batsmen from both sides played like “in the IPL”. Padhiyar has been with Baroda for four years and he felt that the key to succeed was to stay at the crease. “The ball was taking turn. The bounce was good. Baroda made 244 in the second innings. [In contrast] Madhya Pradesh batsmen did not show the patience,” he said.To support his opinion on the pitch, Padhiyar pointed to the 72-run final-wicket partnership between Yusuf Pathan, who hit a century, and Baroda No. 11 Munaf Patel. He also cited the example of the match previous at the ground, where Railways got the better of Baroda by an innings and 48 runs. “Arindam Ghosh and Mahesh Rawat just stood resolute to play for one full day and barely score 150 runs, even when the ball was turning,” Padhiyar said. Even Uttar Pradesh, who beat Baroda in their first home match, showed more patience, Padhiyar stressed.Mukesh Sahni, Madhya Pradesh coach, said the pitch was turning and the bounce was occasionally uneven, but he did not blame the curator for his team’s plight. Instead, he agreed with Padhiyar’s remarks and put the onus on his batsmen, who he said committed unnecessary errors. “The wicket is not proper in terms of the spin it took straightaway from the first session but it is fine as both teams played on the same pitch,” Sahni said. “We played bad shots.”One of the biggest hurdles for the BCCI’s ground and pitches committee, which is headed by Daljit Singh, is a shortage of manpower. The BCCI reduced the committee’s strength from 12 members to five, which, it is understood, is proving to be a restraint considering Daljit’s panel has to monitor 108 group matches in this Ranji Trophy. It is learned that the West Zone member on the panel, Dhiraj Parsanna, will be asked to do an inspection of the Moti Bagh pitch.

Monitorado dia a dia, Hernanes ainda busca a melhor forma no Tricolor

Litton: 'Not going to talk about a particular brand of cricket'

In his first press conference as Bangladesh’s T20I captain, Litton stressed the importance of clear communication with the players

Mohammad Isam12-May-2025Litton Das’ target with the Bangladesh T20I side is to focus on results rather than a particular brand of cricket. He set this agenda on Monday, in his first press conference after being appointed as the Bangladesh captain in the format. Litton was appointed captain last week when the BCB named the squad that will play against UAE and Pakistan in a total of seven T20Is over the next couple of weeks.Litton replaced Najmul Hossain Shanto, who quit the position earlier this year. Shanto was named the all-format Bangladesh captain in early 2024, but a loss of form caused him to take this action.Form hasn’t been on Litton’s side either, but he led Bangladesh to a 3-0 T20I series win against West Indies in December, when Shanto was out with an injury. Given Bangladesh’s lack of choices, Litton was the BCB’s only option.Litton stressed that his role would require him to communicate clearly with his team-mates.”I am not going to talk about a particular brand of cricket,” he said. “We might need to chase 180-200 in some games. Then we will have to chase 140-145 in other games. The ultimate goal is to win the game. A batter might need to score 40 off 20 balls in one game, and 15 off 20 in the next game.”I want every player to be involved in the game. A player must understand what the team needs from him. It is more important for the player to know how to win a game, rather than stick to a brand of cricket.”For the Bangladesh team to go ahead, the players have to perform. They have to play their specific roles. I have to communicate well with the players, more than talking to the BCB. The more time I get, I will get to be more involved in team matters.”Litton scored 368 runs in the BPL at a strike rate of 143.19•BCB

Litton hasn’t played for Bangladesh in all of 2025. He was dropped from the ODI side ahead of the Champions Trophy, and missed the Test series against Zimbabwe after getting an NOC from the BCB to play in the Pakistan Super League. A thumb injury eventually kept him out of that tournament. While Litton was enduring a run of low scores at the time of his Champions Trophy axing, he has since returned to form. He scored 368 runs in the Bangladesh Premier League at an average of 36.80 and a strike rate of 143.19, and has carried that form into the 50-overs Dhaka Premier League, with two half-centuries in his last five innings for Gulshan CC.”I think I played international cricket last [in] December,” he said. “I was not [among the] runs at that time but since then I have tried to get back to form. I tried to get runs in BPL and DPL. I can only try my best. I will try to come back to some form, particularly in the way I have played in my career. If I am doing well, it will definitely help the team.”Litton believes that being appointed on a long-term basis is ideal for a captain . “It is certainly positive to be appointed on a long-term basis,” he said. “It allows you to think clearly about a lot of things. I have to organise the team my way. The players that I have, together we can do something good for the team.”Litton also praised the BCB for appointing Mahedi Hasan as his deputy. Mahedi was in great form against West Indies in December, and is one of the more underrated offspinners in world cricket.”Mahedi has been one of Bangladesh’s best powerplay bowlers,” Litton said. “He is a dominating bowler. You will see very few spinners around the world dominate in that manner. I think he will do better, and give us input to the best of his ability.”

Smith focused after paternity dash

With his eight-day old daughter and wife more than 11,000 miles away, Graeme Smith could be forgiven for having other things on his mind ahead of the second Test against England. That he does not, is nothing short of admirable.”I am very focused on what lies ahead,” Smith said at Headingley. “I was lucky enough to have a lengthy plane trip to put everything into perspective. Spending 14 hours alone gave me time to think about what I’d been through.”Smith returned home to Cape Town last Monday, shortly after South Africa sealed their first-ever win at The Oval, to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. The baby, named Cadence Christine, was born on Wednesday by planned caesarean section and Smith was able to spend four days with her before flying in to Leeds via Amsterdam on Sunday night.Although he is not the only player to have taken a paternity break mid-tour – Shaun Pollock did it on the 2003 tour to England and Andrew Strauss did it on England’s 2005 tour to Pakistan, to name a few – he is likely the only captain to have done it and his absence was felt. AB de Villiers described the preparation ahead of the second Test as “disjointed”, while Vernon Philander said it would be good to “have our leader back”.Smith also noticed that the team was happy to have him back but did not think his trip home affected their build-up. “The guys were glad to see me so I think that’s a bonus,” he said. “Gary Kirsten is a very solid character in the group and keeps good perspective of where we are. His management team wouldn’t have backed off on the players over the last few days so maybe I missed out on a few good fitness sessions.”Not one to ever let time off affect his game – Smith’s century at The Oval came in his first Test innings since recovering from ankle surgery in April – he nonetheless said he had made an effort to “get myself technically ready” for the game. Smith had two days of training ahead of the match, which will be significant in more ways than one.Victory would see South Africa take the No.1 ranking in Test cricket but, regardless of the result, Smith will equal Allan Border’s record for most Tests as captain, a feather in the cap of his nine-year stint in charge of the team. His commitment to building South Africa to a position where they can claim the No. 1 ranking is something he said his family had backed him in. “My family understand the space I am in and what we are trying to achieve as a team. Having the support from them is a crucial factor moving forward,” he said.He also has a much larger fanbase, with the South African public enjoying strong performances from their athletes in the United Kingdom over the past two weeks. Golfer Ernie Els won The Open on the Sunday of the Oval Test, his first major in a decade, while South African swimmers Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos have won gold medals at the Olympics. With the fans back home wanting a Test series win to cap it off, Smith said his men will do all they can to deliver. “It’s just great to be a part of. As a South African, the last few weeks of sport have been incredible,” he said. “You can feel the buzz back home and all the messages we have been receiving. The fans are right behind us and that motivation is a crucial factor for us.”

Querl stars as Unicorns win

Glenn Querl starred with ball and bat as the Unicorns pulled off their first win of the Clydesdale Bank 40 season, beating Kent by four wickets

20-May-2012
ScorecardGlenn Querl starred with ball and bat as the Unicorns pulled off their first win of the Clydesdale Bank 40 season, beating Kent by four wickets with an over to spare at Canterbury.Querl, the Zimbabwe-born all-rounder, followed up best figures of 4 for 41 with an unbeaten 24 from 21 balls to see his side to victory in the Group C clash. Having played out a maiden from Matt Coles to leave the Unicorns needing 33 from four overs he went on to hit four boundaries in seven balls to make Kent pay for a self-destructive batting effort. The experienced Keith Parsons played with calm composure to finish unbeaten on 46, guiding the ECB recreational side to a notable scalp. It was also Kent’s first competitive defeat this season. The pattern was set as early as the ninth ball of the Kent innings, when Sam Billings played across the line to be bowled by Querl. Alex Blake then miscued a pull to Steven Cheetham at mid-on to become Querl’ s second victim.Rob Key, the Kent captain, was third out at 41 when he was lured down the pitch in slow left-armer Luke Beaven’s first over and was stumped by yards by Tom New. In Beaven’s next over Darren Stevens tried to hit over the top and fell to an excellent low catch by Luis Reece at mid-on.A low-key stand of 50 in 14 overs between Brendan Nash and Sam Northeast brought some stability to the Kent innings before Nash was run out for 26 attempting a risky second run to James Campbell at long leg.Kent would have struggled to reach 150 but for a responsible 69 off 94 balls from Northeast, who was run out in the final over of the innings.Off-spinner James Tredwell made a much-needed breakthrough for Kent in the 10th over of the Unicorns reply when he dismissed Michael Thornely, Geraint Jones sprinting from behind the stumps to scoop the ball up in the vacant short-leg position. Jones also caught James Ord as he tried to angle medium-pacer Adam Ball down to third man.The same combination accounted for Campbell when he top-edged an attempted hook in Ball’s next over, but Tom New and Parsons brought the Unicorns closer to their target in a stand of 49 in 12 overs before New chipped Tredwell to Blake at midwicket. The Unicorns were still well placed needing 54 from 10 overs, but Tredwell, who finished with four for 24, gave Kent fresh hope with two wickets in successive balls.

Cowan, Bailey secure win for Tasmania

ScorecardGeorge Bailey contributed to Tasmania’s success•Getty Images

Ed Cowan and George Bailey have kept Tasmania firmly in the race to make the Sheffield Shield final after they steered the Tigers to victory over Queensland in Hobart. Tasmania were set 161 on the fourth day and they comfortably reached their target with only two wickets down, with Cowan undefeated on 77 and Bailey on 57 when the winning runs came. The Bulls added only 14 runs to their overnight total to be dismissed for 215 when Luke Butterworth claimed his fourth wicket, with Ben Cutting left unbeaten on 66. Despite the early loss of the opener Steve Cazzulino for 9 and the departure of Alex Doolan for 13, Tasmania cruised to victory within 44 overs.Cowan’s work completed a fine match for him after he scored 82 in the first innings, while Bailey showed no ill effects of a quick mid-match trip to Brisbane to cover for the injured Michael Clarke in Australia’s ODI squad. The win pushed Tasmania up to third on the Shield table, only two points behind Queensland and four behind the competition leaders Western Australia. It has been a disappointing fortnight for the Bulls, who were unbeaten in their first six matches of the campaign but have now lost their past two games, to the Warriors and the Tigers. With two rounds left, the top four sides can all still reach the decider, with only New South Wales and South Australia out of the running.
