Fosun’s lofty Wolves dream can be elevated if they clinch Rangers teen Leon King

According to Football Insider, Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined the race to sign Rangers teenager Leon King next month as uncertainty about his future continues to mount at Ibrox stadium.

What’s the word?

It is believed that Scottish Premiership side have hit a brick wall over negotiations to tie the 15-year-old down to a professional deal when he turns 16 in January.

Wolves join a long list of teams pursuing the central defender with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all monitoring the current situation north of the border.

Football Insider claim that the youngster has rejected the Gers’ offer of a contract leaving them in a similar situation to Billy Gilmour two years ago who swapped Glasgow for south west London. They also state that King is just as highly-rated.

Fosun’s long-term ambitions

The west Midlanders face stiff competition to clinch the emerging starlet, but if they can beat off some of the Premier League’s heavyweights, then it will be a fantastic move for all parties.

Fosun, the conglomerate that owns Wolves, have pretty lofty long-term ambitions for the club, one of which is the ability to start producing talent from within.

Such plans are already in motion as seen with their transfer activity in the summer – they signed more players for the academy setup than they did the first team with names such as Bruno Jordao, Pedro Neto, Flavio Cristovao, Renat Dadashov and Meritan Shabani all joining.

Wolves’ standing in the Premier League 2 last season has meant that the club can compete in the Premier League International Cup where the U23 squad has been impressing with draws against Paris Saint-Germain and Athletic Bilbao.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?

This is the platform at which their youngsters can now impress, which only goes to show how Fosun’s aims are coming along – pretty well.

The addition of King would certainly bolster that goal considering how highly-rated he is by Rangers and Wolves’ English rivals alike.

And in other Molineux news, could Morgan Gibbs-White’s future at Wolves be in doubt after the club scouted this ex-Barcelona man…?

Between The Lines: Cedric Soares criticises Southampton after yet another defeat

[ad_pod ]

Southampton right-back Cedric Soares has criticised the club’s mental fragility following their 3-2 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage Saturday.

Saints went into the clash in west London looking for just their second Premier League victory against a team with the worst defensive record in the division, but despite taking the lead and then equalising to make it 2-2, they were unable to hold on for at least a point as they dropped into the relegation zone over the weekend.

The south coast have now taken the lead in 13 top-flight matches in 2018, but they have won on just three occasion, but what did Cedric’s revealing comments really mean?

What did he say?

According to quotes as reported by The Guardian, the Portugal international said:

“We were winning 1-0 and I had a feeling that we [would] get the 1-1 because we were very exposed, and then maybe after 1-1 our head was gone immediately.

“We need to be more experienced in managing the game. We were the better side but again we keep saying this, it’s the result that matters. Three stupid goals. We have to try to push each other. We need to believe in ourselves.

“There are ups and downs in football and this seems to be a long down right now. Everyone made some stupid decisions maybe. Sometimes we need to be more simple. We were a bit exposed because we were trying to take risks offensively.”

Check out the video below to see how Brazil fans reacted to being asked how Cristiano Ronaldo would perform for them in a hilarious prank by Playmaker FC…

What did he really mean?

Well, not only was it clearly criticism of some of his teammates, but the mention of tactics and the team leaving themselves too exposed defensively was surely a dig at the under-pressure Mark Hughes as well.

His comments are not ideal considering he says he is expecting to concede as a defender, and also quite hypocritical as he has been one of the main culprits – as he was Fulham’s first two goals at the weekend – when it comes to individual errors and playing a part in being responsible for some of the goals conceded.

The fact that he is saying these things in the public eye is also not the best idea, as it lets future opposition know that they aren’t mentally strong even if they do take the lead in a match.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react as Vertonghen and Dembele come through Belgium v Scotland unscathed

[ad_pod ]

During the international break, plenty of football fans are more concerned about their players picking up injuries than they are about what occurs on the pitch.

In this case, some Tottenham Hotspur fans could care less about Belgium’s 4-0 thrashing over Scotland in the Nations League.

The North London club had Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele competing in the clash at Hampden Park for the Red Devils.

Premier League players Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Michy Batshuayi got on the scoresheet, while Vertonghen played the full 90 minutes and Dembele was on the pitch for 85 of those.

On Twitter, Tottenham provided an update on the pair’s performance, and a handful of supporters were not enthused by what they saw.

Others, though, took a lighter approach…

Tottenham will return from the international break with a crucial clash against Liverpool.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men will face the unbeaten Reds at Wembley in the early kickoff on September 15.

Everton fans dread appointment of Sammy Lee

Sammy Lee is well known on Merseyside due to his past with Liverpool Football Club, but now it appears that he will be making the controversial move over to Everton.

According to BBC Sport, the 58-year-old is expected to be appointed as an assistant coach at Goodison Park alongside new manager Sam Allardyce.

The 63-year-old has not signed on the dotted line just yet, but Everton have confirmed that Allardyce is on the verge of becoming the successor to Ronald Koeman, who was sacked over a month ago.

Lee came through the Liverpool ranks as a player and was part of the club’s success during the 1980s.

In his coaching career, he had a lengthy spell as part of the backroom team, and then went on to work alongside Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers, England and Crystal Palace.

While it makes sense for the new boss to have his trusted assistants with him, Lee’s potential arrival has caused quite a stir among Everton fans.

Transfer Focus: West Ham eyeing bold summer swoop

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic is eyeing up an ambitious summer swoop for in form Napoli star Dries Mertens as he looks to add pace and quality to his front line this summer, according to reports from The Sun.

What’s the word?

West Ham have struggled in the goals department this season, with no player having broken into double figures and no consistent choice up top.

With that in mind, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic made a point in his London Evening Standard column last week that he would be targeting first team players who can bring quality and pace to his attacking ranks ahead of next season.

After his comments, The Sun believe that Belgian striker Dries Mertens is in his sights, despite having been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea in the past.

The 30-year-old, who West Ham feel could be tempted to Stratford in a £20m move, has been in sensational form this season bagging 31 goals in all competitions so far, more than the top four goalscorers in claret and blue combined this term.

What went wrong for Slav?

It has been the case of same old story for Hammers fans in terms of their main men this season. Whilst top scorer Michail Antonio has been fantastic the need for him to be deployed in various positions as well as persistent injury worries saw his campaign significantly hampered.

Furthermore, the continuing theme of Andy Carroll breaking in, scoring and then limping off has continued throughout the first season at London Stadium and, of course, having lost the creative talent and flair of Dimitri Payet chances created have been few and far between.

Add to that a calamitous summer of signings last year and the east Londoners were never going to topping the goal-scoring charts this summer.

Bilic will be hoping that coups such as Mertens can lift the game of the entire squad as they battle for places in his starting XI next term.

Five reasons Southampton will beat Sparta Prague on Thursday

Southampton begin their Europa League campaign this Thursday as they welcome Sparta Prague to St. Mary’s in their opening Group K fixture.

The game is the first for the club in the modern Europa League having qualified automatically thanks to their impressive 6th placed finish last season – the club’s best ever in the Premier League. The Saints missed out on the competition in the previous season as they were knocked out in the final qualifying round by Danish side FC Midtjylland.

It is a historic night for the club, with Claude Puel’s side having missed out on European competitions for over a decade – as well being relegated to the third division of English football and bouncing back to the top division in that time.

The fixture is a landmark which represents the remarkable turn-around of a club in near total collapse to one of England’s biggest and best – much as they were in the days before the Premier League.

Can Southampton mark it with a win? We think so and here are five reasons why …

A Night To Remember

No not the Shalamar song, but it will be a huge night for the club, its players and the supporters as Southampton return to Europe after over three decades away from major tournaments on the continent.

The current squad have a chance to become Southampton legends with a win – and if that isn’t enough to get the players fired up, then not much else will.

Kick-Start the Season

It has been a relatively poor start to the Premier League season for Claude Puel and his men, having drawn two and lost two of their opening four fixtures – which sees them lie at a lowly 18th in the table.

The French manager now has a point to prove, and what better way to do it than with a first European victory in a major competition for three decades.

It could be the result to kick-start the Saint’s season, so expect a performance to match that.

Prague’s Route to Europe

While the Czech side have a fairly formidable record in Europe having made the quarter-finals of the competition last season, their route to Group K wasn’t such a simple ride this time out.

Danish side SonderjyskE Fodbold first held Sparta to a goalless draw in the first leg of their qualifying fixture, then remarkably went 2-0 in the return fixture.

Sparta were able to turn it around to win 3-2, but it wasn’t convincing and Southampton will know that coming into this fixture.

Summer Additions

Southampton have recruited wisely again this summer, including a number of players who are familiar with playing on the European stage, which can only work to their advantage.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has played in the Champion’s League with Bayern Munich; Ryan Bertrand has of course experienced Europe (albeit briefly) with Chelsea, and believe it or not Nathan Redmond has also played five games and scored one goal in the Europa League with Norwich.

Fixture List

Sparta Prague’s visit to Southampton is their first of four games in the space of 10 fixture-packed days – with the Czech side having two league games and a cup fixture shortly after their trip to England.

With such a busy fixture list, it could be that Sparta are wary of injuries and fitness and could give some players a chance to rest ahead of their priority league games.

Man Utd women player ratings vs Brighton: Mary Earps' heroics and Ella Toone's wonder strike fail to save Red Devils from disappointing draw as Rachel Williams comes to the rescue again

Late drama saw Marc Skinner's side snatch a point from the Seagulls but they are now four points off Women's Super League leaders Chelsea

Ella Toone, Mary Earps and Guro Bergsvand all thought they'd performed the decisive heroics in Manchester United's rollercoaster 2-2 draw with Brighton on Sunday night. But it was Rachel Williams' 98th minute equaliser that proved to be the defining moment on what was, despite the late drama, still a very disappointing day out for the Red Devils. They now sit four points off Women's Super League leaders Chelsea after winning just two of their first five games of the season.

The warning signs were there for Man Utd, who were breathing a sigh of relief when Pauline Bremer's cross-cum-shot hit Earps' crossbar with less than 20 minutes on the clock. Moments later, Jorelyn Carabali forced a good save out of the England shot-stopper and, on the half hour mark, Elisabeth Terland beat her to fire the hosts into the lead, with Maya Le Tissier and Millie Turner completely unaware of the Brighton forward's presence after Toone had lost the ball in her own half.

United had plenty of chances to level the scores before the break with Geyse hitting the post, Leah Galton heading over from close range and Turner being denied brilliantly from close range by former Red Devil Sophie Baggaley. Toone would finally get that equaliser they were searching for when she hit an unstoppable strike into the top corner deep into the second half but there was still time for not one but two final twists.

After Earps had already been forced into two fine saves and Williams had hit the post at the other end, Bergsvand rose highest in the box to score an 89th minute goal that seemed certain to be the match-winner. But United have been here already this season and so has Williams. Brought on as a super sub to save the day on the opening weekend at Aston Villa, she performed more heroics on the south coast with an even later goal to snatch a point for Marc Skinner's side.

GOAL rates Man Utd's players from the Broadfield Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Mary Earps (7/10):

Made several huge saves to keep her team in it despite an under-par performance.

    Jayde Riviere (6/10):

A little sloppy on the ball at times but got forward well, creating a fantastic chance for Galton late in the first half.

    Maya Le Tissier (5/10):

Caught out on the counter a couple of times. Neither her nor Turner were aware enough of Terland for the goal.

    Millie Turner (5/10):

Generally good in possession but, again, left Terland all alone for the goal.

    Hannah Blundell (6/10):

Linked up well with Galton to cause problems.

    Midfield

    Katie Zelem (5/10):

United's intention to go out wide rather than through the middle meant she didn't get on the ball a lot.

    Hinata Miyazawa (6/10):

Some intelligent touches and movement. Pressed well, too.

    Ella Toone (6/10):

Dispossessed in her own half in an error that led to Brighton's opener but made up for it with a wonder strike to level the scores.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Melvine Malard (6/10):

Forced an outstanding save out of Baggaley early on and was lively throughout, despite being played in a position that didn't seem to suit her – again.

    Geyse (5/10):

Hit the post with a massive chance in the first half. Generally wasteful in front of goal.

    Leah Galton (6/10):

A constant threat, though did miss a big chance from close range in the first half.

    Subs & Manager

    Lucia Garcia (N/A):

Couldn't impact the game from the bench.

    Rachel Williams (7/10):

Came on with less than 20 minutes left but still managed to perform heroics. Hit the post before that as well.

    Nikita Parris (N/A):

Only on for the final few minutes.

    Marc Skinner (5/10):

Decision to play Malard, a natural finisher, out wide continues to be baffling, especially given how wasteful in front of goal United were in this game. Super sub Williams again had to save the day after a poor performance.

Sign a centre-back! Liverpool winners and losers as Darwin Nunez double fails to paper over the cracks in Jurgen Klopp's defence

The Reds showed impressive resilence to triumph at St James Park, but their backline just isn't good enough to sustain a title challenge

The quality of Darwin Nunez's finishing in Sunday's dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle came as a welcome surprise – but the dreadful nature of the visitors' defending was neither welcome nor a surprise. Pre-season offered a painful reminder of the brittle nature of the Reds' backline and the start of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign has only hammered home the fact reinforcement is required before the close of the transfer window.

During his pre-match press conference, manager Jurgen Klopp had looked visibly frustrated by a question over whether Liverpool had sufficient strength in depth at the back to sustain a title challenge, but it was made abundantly clear at St James' Park that the long-mooted arrival of a left-sided centre-back simply has to materialise next week – particularly now with Virgil van Dijk facing a suspension for a straight red card.

A solution also has to be found to the long-standing Trent Alexander-Arnold conundrum, with the right-back continuing to prove a liability in defence. Here, he gifted Anthony Gordon a goal that should have seen Newcastle go on to easily defeat a side that was reduced to 10 men just moments later.

That they did not is obviously testament to Liverpool's character, manager and No.9. However, while the celebrations that followed the full-time whistle were totally justified, Nunez's late double should not be allowed to paper over the cracks in Liverpool's defence.

For the second game in a row, the Reds have managed to recover from shooting themselves in the foot – but sooner or later they will be made to pay for their fragility and now regular lapses in concentration unless they "go for it", as Jamie Carragher put it on , in the final week of the summer transfer window.

Below, GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from St James' Park…

GettyWINNER: Darwin Nunez

Boy, did Nunez need this! Left on the bench again, it actually appeared unlikely for the majority of the game the Uruguayan would see any game time at all, given it was Diogo Jota that Klopp first turned to in a desperate bid to turn the game around. It was yet further confirmation that Nunez is effectively Liverpool's fifth-choice forward.

However, the No.9 got his chance to shine with just 13 minutes to go – and he made the absolutely most of it. Nunez has come in for a lot of criticism since arriving at Anfield, mainly because he has not looked like a £64 million striker on account of his horribly erratic finishing. Here, though, he took the two chances that came his way in the closing stages with aplomb, displaying the mix of precision and power that had people comparing Nunez to Erling Haaland this time last year.

The 24-year-old still has a hell of a long way to go to get to that level – excelling on a consistent basis was his principal problem last season and there's no actual guarantee that he will even start next week. But this deadly double will have done wonders for his confidence and might just have kick-started his Liverpool career.

Nunez, remember, had an average first season at Benfica before exploding into life in his second. Maybe history is about to repeat itself at Anfield…

AdvertisementGetty LOSER: Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool successfully appealed Alexis Mac Allister's red card from last week's win over Bournemouth – but there is absolutely no chance of them overturning Van Dijk's dismissal here. The Dutchman was at first stunned by his sending-off, and then irate. He stayed on the pitch for a good two minutes after the decision, and even after belatedly making his way towards the tunnel, he stopped to remonstrate with the fourth official. It was embarrassing – particularly in his role as Liverpool's captain.

Van Dijk's argument was obviously that he had taken the ball off Alexander Isak – but the fact of the matter was that he had only done so after sweeping the striker's right leg. It was a clear foul and, because of where the offence took place, a clear red card too.

Van Djik's rashness means that the Reds will now be without their best defender for next Sunday's visit of Aston Villa, which is unforgivable, really, given the fragile nature of the defence. The centre-back was delighted to take on the responsibility of captaining the club but, once he's calmed down, he must also be willing to take responsibility for a stupid sending-off – and his pathetic reaction to the red.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Jurgen Klopp

It's obvious that there's no love lost between Liverpool and Newcastle's respective coaching teams, so this stunning come-from-behind victory will taste particularly sweet for Klopp. However, he will be even prouder of the way in which he turned the game around with his substitutions.

Klopp never gave up on the game and made a number of positive moves during the second half. Indeed, it wasn't just about Nunez's double – he also injected some energy into an understandably tiring team by putting youngsters Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah on in place of Wataru Onda and Joel Matip. The introduction of Jota also saw Liverpool look threatening for the first time since before Van Dijk's dismissal.

The coup de grace, though, was obviously taking off a midfielder in Mac Allister and replacing him with a No.9. It was a bold, adventurous move – as was the decision to bring on inexperienced youngster Quansah – and it was rightly rewarded.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Eddie Howe

By complete contrast, Eddie Howe completely botched this game. His side had both a goal and numerical advantage for more than an hour of play – yet ended up taking nothing out of a match that was there for the taking. Sad to say, that is all on the manager, with Howe failing dismally to transmit any sense of urgency to his players as it became evident during the second half that Liverpool were growing in confidence.

None of his substitutions had any impact on the game, with even Howe himself admitting afterwards that he had erred in withdrawing Sandro Tonali and Gordon, who was terrorising Alexander-Arnold.

In that sense, Newcastle got exactly what they deserved, with Howe justly punished for his shameful lack of adventure and completely mis-reading the game. As Pat Nevin pointed out in commentary on , only one side went looking for all three points after Nunez's equaliser – and it wasn't the hosts, who appeared bizarrely happy with a point against a 10-man top-four rival.

Gilberto in 20.7 seconds! Where are the Arsenal team that helped make Champions League history at PSV now?

The Gunners didn't waste any time getting off the mark when they travelled to Eindhoven in 2002, and will be hoping for a similar result on Thursday

It was a moment that saw Gilberto Silva write his name into the Champions League history books.

When Arsenal took on PSV on September 25, 2002, Arsene Wenger’s side were expecting a tough night against the Dutch outfit. But from the moment Gilberto struck after just 20.7 seconds, the Gunners were in cruise control.

They went on to win 4-0 at the PSV Stadion, with Gilberto’s volley from Thierry Henry’s cross breaking the previous record for the fastest-ever Champions League goal, which had been set by Alessandro Del Piero for Juventus against Manchester United.

The Brazilian’s record has gone on to be beaten since, but it’s still a moment he cherishes when he looks back on his long and illustrious career.

“It was a very happy moment,” he said. “When I knew it was the fastest goal in the competition’s history, I was amazed by the news. After, it was broken and it broke my heart a little bit!”

So now, 20 years on, where are the Arsenal starting XI that featured in that historic match? GOAL takes a look..

Getty ImagesDavid Seaman

A true Arsenal legend, Seaman won eight major trophies with the Gunners and made 564 appearances before leaving for Manchester City in 2003.

He called time on his playing days soon after and there haven’t been many TV shows that Seaman hasn’t popped up on since.

From Dancing on Ice to ‘Carp fishing with Seaman and Gazza’, the 59-year-old has done them all.

Still one of the nation’s favourite sporting personalities, Seaman often does football pundit work and also spends time working with goalkeepers at the Arsenal academy.

AdvertisementGettyLauren

What a player! An absolute warrior on the football field, Lauren is still revered at Arsenal to this day.

He won two Premier League titles during his time in north London and was a key figure in the legendary 2003-04 Invincibles side.

After leaving Arsenal, he had spells with Portsmouth and Cordoba before retiring in 2010.

He now represents Arsenal as a club ambassador and works as a football pundit on Spanish TV. Lauren also has a role working as a FIFA technical expert for talent development within African football.

Getty ImagesSol Campbell

Former Spurs star Campbell was a colossus for Arsenal after he crossed the north London divide in 2002.

The ideal replacement for Tony Adams, who was coming to the end of his career, Campbell slotted seamlessly into the back four and helped Arsene Wenger’s side win both the Premier League and the FA Cup in his first season.

Campbell was then the bedrock of the defence for the Invincibles campaign and formed an exceptional partnership with Kolo Toure.

In all, he made 146 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal before leaving for Portsmouth in 2006.

He has had spells in management since hanging up his boots, with Macclesfield Town and most recently Southend United.

He did briefly move into coaching after retiring as a player, working with Arsenal for a time. He was also briefly part of the scouting team under Arsene Wenger.

As a player, Keown won three league titles during his two spells with Arsenal.

His final game for the club was against Leicester City in 2004 when Arsene Wenger’s side completed their legendary Invincibles season.
