Southampton begin their Europa League campaign this Thursday as they welcome Sparta Prague to St. Mary’s in their opening Group K fixture.

The game is the first for the club in the modern Europa League having qualified automatically thanks to their impressive 6th placed finish last season – the club’s best ever in the Premier League. The Saints missed out on the competition in the previous season as they were knocked out in the final qualifying round by Danish side FC Midtjylland.

It is a historic night for the club, with Claude Puel’s side having missed out on European competitions for over a decade – as well being relegated to the third division of English football and bouncing back to the top division in that time.

The fixture is a landmark which represents the remarkable turn-around of a club in near total collapse to one of England’s biggest and best – much as they were in the days before the Premier League.

Can Southampton mark it with a win? We think so and here are five reasons why …

A Night To Remember

No not the Shalamar song, but it will be a huge night for the club, its players and the supporters as Southampton return to Europe after over three decades away from major tournaments on the continent.

The current squad have a chance to become Southampton legends with a win – and if that isn’t enough to get the players fired up, then not much else will.

Kick-Start the Season

It has been a relatively poor start to the Premier League season for Claude Puel and his men, having drawn two and lost two of their opening four fixtures – which sees them lie at a lowly 18th in the table.

The French manager now has a point to prove, and what better way to do it than with a first European victory in a major competition for three decades.

It could be the result to kick-start the Saint’s season, so expect a performance to match that.

Prague’s Route to Europe

While the Czech side have a fairly formidable record in Europe having made the quarter-finals of the competition last season, their route to Group K wasn’t such a simple ride this time out.

Danish side SonderjyskE Fodbold first held Sparta to a goalless draw in the first leg of their qualifying fixture, then remarkably went 2-0 in the return fixture.

Sparta were able to turn it around to win 3-2, but it wasn’t convincing and Southampton will know that coming into this fixture.

Summer Additions

Southampton have recruited wisely again this summer, including a number of players who are familiar with playing on the European stage, which can only work to their advantage.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has played in the Champion’s League with Bayern Munich; Ryan Bertrand has of course experienced Europe (albeit briefly) with Chelsea, and believe it or not Nathan Redmond has also played five games and scored one goal in the Europa League with Norwich.

Fixture List

Sparta Prague’s visit to Southampton is their first of four games in the space of 10 fixture-packed days – with the Czech side having two league games and a cup fixture shortly after their trip to England.

With such a busy fixture list, it could be that Sparta are wary of injuries and fitness and could give some players a chance to rest ahead of their priority league games.

USWNT star Catarina Macario received a brilliant recovery boost Wednesday afternoon ahead of Chelsea's thumping over Sunderland.

Macario has been sidelined with an ACL injury for over 18 months, having not made a single appearance for the Blues since joining in the summer of 2023. Prior to that, she won the UEFA Champions League with Lyon in France, where she scored 28 goals in 42 matches across all competitions. Now, after Sam Kerr's brutal ACL tear this January, the Blues could use Macario's nose for goal to shoot for the treble in Emma Hayes' final season in charge before she takes over as the new USWNT boss this summer.

The USWNT forward has been touted for a return to the pitch after the current FIFA international window for the women's game. Interim USA boss Twila Kilgore announced her roster yesterday, with Chelsea teammate Mia Fishel in the mix up top. However, after the window, Macario's long-awaited return could mark a sensational moment for both the Blues and the USWNT ahead of this summer's FIFA World Cup.

For every great signing, there are three bad ones. But which transfer went most badly wrong in Europe this season?

As more and more money gets pumped into the European game, clubs are getting better and better at flushing their transfer budgets down the toilet in the form of ill-judged signings. The 2022-23 campaign has been a particularly poor year in a recruitment sense across the continent.

It won't surprise you to hear that Premier League clubs were the worst offenders, but sides in Italy, Germany, Spain and beyond have all proved their incompetence in the transfer market in recent times, too.

Overpaying is not the only sin that has been committed by Europe's top clubs this season, though. There have also been failures in due diligence and scouting, with several signings clogging up a space in the squad when anyone with half an idea about football might have clocked that they weren't suited to that particular club.

Below, we've taken a look at this campaign's worst transfer offenders by ranking the 21 most disappointing signings in Europe…

Doherty never truly settled at Tottenham and who can blame him? Back in October, when Antonio Conte was asked why he wasn't selecting the Ireland international, he replied: "I am not stupid. I don't want to lose."

In January, Spurs agreed to cancel his contract so he could join Atletico Madrid, in a move he hoped would reignite his faltering career. Fellow ex-Spurs man Kieran Trippier enjoyed success in the Spanish capital, but Doherty has not followed suit. Overall, he's tasted just 16 minutes of La Liga football. Perhaps another contract termination is needed this summer.

Sanches' topsy-turvy career has continued this season. After rekindling his ailing career at Lille, helping Les Dogues secure a shock Ligue 1 title in 2021, he opted to return to Europe's top table by joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

It has proved to be an error of judgement, with the Euro 2016 Young Player of the Tournament struggling to break into the first team in another injury-plagued campaign. He could still emerge out of the other side of this latest setback, with PSG poised for another squad reset at the end of the season, but a loan move elsewhere could also be on the cards.

Ajax paid the second-highest fee in Eredivisie history to tempt Bassey away from Rangers, but he has ended the season sat on the bench following a string of questionable performances. It was rumoured that an unnamed Premier League club tabled a £20 million bid for the defender ($24.8m) with a view to him moving in the summer – which the Dutch giants rejected.

Wesley Sneijder doesn't buy it, though, saying recently: "I really don't believe any of that. I think what has happened is that Ajax want to take the pressure off themselves a bit having just lost the cup final too as well as their league standing. I am afraid it can't really be true that Ajax would seriously turn down such an offer for Calvin Bassey." Scathing stuff.

Origi traded cult-hero status at Anfield for a shot at a regular football in Milan. However, he's spent the majority of the season playing second fiddle to Olivier Giroud, desperately failing to find the back of the net and struggling for fitness.

Even accounting for a few niggling injuries, a goal tally of just two is nowhere near good enough for a player on his wages. The Rossoneri will surely be looking for an alternative Giroud successor this summer.

EA Sports have revealed the best dribblers in the game, and Cristiano Ronaldo is a notable omission!

Encerrou-se neste sábado a passagem de Fernando Prass como goleiro do Palmeiras. Aos 41 anos de idade, ele foi comunicado de que o clube não irá renovar seu contrato, que se encerra no dia 31 de dezembro. O encontro ocorreu na sexta-feira, e o clube não fez nenhuma oferta para tentar mantê-lo.

-Não foi da maneira como planejei, mas hoje se encerra meu ciclo no Palmeiras. Obrigado Palmeiras e a torcida pelo carinho! – escreveu Prass em suas redes sociais.

A saída de Prass começou a ganhar forma no ano passado. Após o título brasileiro, o clube entendeu que tanto ele quanto Jailson são semelhantes em nível técnico e renovou com a dupla. Os dois novos vínculos foram anunciados por uma temporada, mas o de Jailson era mais longo, de dois anos.

A avaliação interna, portanto, era de que em 2019 o Palmeiras manteria os dois como reservas de Weverton, mas em 2020 um sairia para subir jovens – Vinicius Silvestre, emprestado ao CRB, voltará. Jailson, três anos mais novo que Prass, foi o escolhido para permanecer.​

Já havia no fim de 2018 o risco pela saída do camisa 1 diante de diferenças com o então diretor de futebol Alexandre Mattos. Luiz Felipe Scolari, porém, pediu a renovação e foi referendado pelo presidente Maurício Galiotte, que se reuniu na época com Prass para renovar o contrato por outro ano.

Apesar da saída do comandante do futebol, o Palmeiras preferiu manter o planejamento traçado ainda em 2018, deixando o ídolo buscar um novo clube, enquanto Weverton, Jailson e Vinicius Silvestre trabalharão com garotos da base na temporada que vem.

Em busca de novos diretor de futebol e treinador, o Palmeiras passa por uma reformulação – Edu Dracena, outro que tinha contrato até o fim do ano, decidiu se aposentar. Prass, por sua vez, ainda quer continuar jogando e tinha o sonho de permanecer no Verdão.

Contratado no fim de 2012, o camisa 1 disputou 274 partidas pelo Verdão, conquistou quatro títulos – a Série B de 2013, a Copa do Brasil de 2015, e os Brasileiros de 2016 e 2018. Na Copa do Brasil, ficou marcado na história por ter converter o pênalti que garantiu a vitória sobre o Santos.

Prass saiu do Vasco para chegar ao Palmeiras recém-rebaixado e encerrou a instabilidade que o clube teve na posição durante 2012, o primeiro ano após a aposentadoria de Marcos. Sofreu duas lesões sérias no cotovelo, mas voltou a tempo tanto de ajudar a evitar uma nova queda em 2014, quanto para participar da festa do Brasileirão de 2016.

Foi reserva nos últimos dois anos, mas ainda assim teve momentos marcantes, como na Libertadores deste ano, em que pegou o 15º pênalti com a camisa alviverde, contra o Junior Barranquilla (COL). Ele deixa o Palmeiras como o oitavo goleiro com mais partidas e o segundo no século, atrás só de Marcos.

Faced with the prospect of their fifth successive defeat in IPL 2015, Mumbai Indians’ top order pulled together to help set up an 18-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Half-centuries from Lendl Simmons and Unmukt Chand, and 42 off 15 from captain Rohit Sharma, lifted the visitors to 209 for 7.That did eventually prove to be a match-winning total but Mumbai Indians’ defence underlined yet again how heavily dependent they are on Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga. The offspinner choked Royal Challengers’ start with tight overs and the wickets of Chris Gayle, Manvinder Bisla and Rilee Rossouw. When a sensational cameo from AB de Villiers and David Wiese’s clean hitting threatened to take the game away, Malinga turned up with his accurate yorkers to ensure Mumbai Indians snapped their losing streak.The adage of well begun half done seemed to bear some truth for Mumbai Indians. After they were asked to bat, Simmons and Parthiv Patel finally stitched together the start the side had missed in its previous four defeats. O desafio do Goytacaz na Série B1 do Carioca não se restringe a almejar uma das vagas para a fase final da Taça Corcovado (Segundo Turno). Em paralelo à luta da equipe no Grupo A, elenco e comissão técnica são assolados por um drama: os frequentes atrasos salariais.

– O que a gente está reivindicando são três meses sem receber. Já estamos partindo para o quarto. A diretoria tem se mobilizado para resolver algumas coisas, e chegou a quitar uma parte antes do jogo com o Tigres. Mas ainda há muito a resolver – detalhou o goleiro Adilson, ao LANCE!.

Os problemas financeiros, que já eram nítidos desde o começo da disputa da Série B1, afetaram o planejamento do Goyta para o decorrer da competição:

– Sete jogadores foram embora durante a Série B1.À medida que foram atrasando os salários, os atletas deixavam o clube. Foi muito difícil, mas conseguimos manter o padrão. – recordou o técnico João Carlos Ângelo, que, assim como os demais integrantes da comissão técnica, também tem a receber do clube.

Sete jogadores foram embora durante a Série B1. Técnico não esconde: ‘Tenho de agir como psicólogo’

O comandante confessou que o ambiente no qual o clube se encontra tem se tornado desafiador:

– É complicado. Eu, como técnico, passei a ter de agir como um psicólogo. Tem de fazer os atletas amenizarem os problemas que já vivem com seus familiares e ressaltar que deixar o clube não é a melhor atitude – destacou o treinador, que contou estar com problemas particulares devido à crise financeira.

O goleiro Adilson revelou como os atrasos salariais causaram dores de cabeça ao elenco:

– Pagamentos de moradias estão atrasados. Não chegamos a receber ordem de despejo, mas tivemos cobranças de proprietários dos imóveis. Os aluguéis vêm sendo resolvidos pelo clube – e ressalta o apoio da direção:

– Seria antiético dizer que a diretoria não está lutando. Eles têm se mobilizado bastante.

AÇÃO DE MARKETING PARA AJUDAR O GOYTACAZ

Mandatário do Goyta, Dartagnan Fernandes destacou que o clube conta com apoios como a fornecedora Giggs (do conselheiro Gildo Gomes). Além disto, foi promovida nas redes sociais do clube a ação de marketing “Entre Em Campo Com o Goytacaz”, na qual torcedores podem colaborar com valores de R$ 50, R$ 500 e R$ 750. Dependendo do valor, o torcedor pode até ter seu nome estampado em locais estratégicos das camisas usadas pelos atletas em partidas da Série B1.

– Já temos reservadas as cotas até o número 22. A torcida se mobilizou, a campanha segue e está nos ajudando financeiramente neste momento – disse.

Fernandes detalhou o que fez o Goyta culminar nos problemas financeiros:

– Nós herdamos dívidas da gestão anterior. Além disto, há penhoras de ações do passado. Estamos batalhando.

Técnico da equipe, João Carlos Ângelo lamenta a falta de incentivo:

– O Goytacaz é um clube representativo, tradicional no futebol do Rio de Janeiro. Não entendo como não recebe incentivo da Prefeitura, como acontece com outros times que disputam o Estadual.

OS DESAFIOS NO GRAMADO

A vitória por 3 a 1 do Goytacaz sobre o Tigres do Brasil não foi significativa apenas por deixar a equipe com 14 pontos (um a menos que o America, vice-líder do Grupo A, que tem o Artsul na dianteira, com 20 pontos) e manter aceso sonho de brigar pela volta à elite estadual. O triunfo no Aryzão trouxe alento a uma semana que começou com turbulência.

No início da semana, os jogadores não treinaram, devido aos atrasos salariais;

– Foi uma decisão nossa, devido a todos os problemas. Depois, voltamos nossas atenções para a preparação do jogo de quarta-feira (contra o Tigres do Brasil).

Antes da partida, houve uma reunião com a diretoria sobre o impassesalarial do Goyta.

– Fui conversar com eles, que realmente estavam muito contrariados, com razão. Disse que tínhamos de dar continuidade ao que estamos fazendo em campo, honrar nosso trabalho. Jogar por nós e pela torcida do Goytacaz – disse João Carlos Ângelo.

Prestes à equipe enfrentar o Bonsucesso neste sábado, o elenco do Goytacaz espera por dias melhores.

– Demos mais um voto de confiança à diretoria. Estamos vivendo dia após dia aqui, honrando nosso caráter, jogando pelas nossas famílias e pela torcida que tem se mobilizado. Estamos muito unidos nesta busca pelo acesso – garante Adilson.

Mesmo em meio a turbulências, o presidente do clube, Dartagnan Fernandes traça uma perspectiva melhor para o Goyta:

– Na próxima segunda-feira, esperamos ter boas notícias.

وأبرزت الصحيفة أسماء أخرى يمكن أن تنافس لاهوز، وهي سلفادور جومار، باكو دييز، رامي أبوخار، كارلوس سواريز، وديفيد أجانزو.

وكان ماتيو لاهوز، صاحب قرارات تحكيمية مثيرة للجدل خلال مشوار ببطولة الدوري الإسباني، حيث يرى جمهور برشلونة أنه ينحاز لريال مدريد، ويرى جمهور النادي الملكي أنه ينحاز للنادي الكتالوني.

أشاد بشير التابعي قلب دفاع نادي الزمالك السابق بمنظومة النادي الأهلي في الوقت الحالي.

وقال بشير التابعي في حديث لقناة “إم بي سي مصر” الفضائية: ” النادي الأهلي بإدارته ولاعبيه ومدربيه خارج التقييم بسبب ما يفعلوه من عمل رائع، كون انه خسر مباراة السوبر الإفريقي شيء طبيعي، هناك تشبع لدى اللاعبين”.

وبدأ الأهلي مشواره في الموسم الجاري بهزيمة صعبة أمام اتحاد العاصمة الجزائري في السوبر الإفريقي، تبعها بالفوز على المصري البورسعيدي بنتيجة 4-0 في افتتاح مشواره بالدوري المصري.
