Celtic still in the hunt for Ko Itakura

Celtic’s first Champions League qualifier this week provided plenty of evidence to Ange Postecoglou that he desperately needs to improve their defence.

The Hoops were considerably off the pace in that department last term and they’ve started 2021/22 in no better shape.

What’s the word?

Celtic have now lost Kristoffer Ajer to the might of English football but they have already secured his replacement. The Bhoys added Carl Starfelt to their ranks almost immediately after confirming Ajer’s departure from Paradise.

Another defensive name to have been linked is Hajduk Split’s Mario Vuskovic.

Celtic have also been targeting Japanese centre-back Ko Itakura and his name came up again this week.

The Daily Record reported that Postecoglou is still interested in bringing him to Scotland. This comes after the arrival of fellow Japan international Kyogo Furuhashi.

Imagine him & Starfelt

Although the Swedish central defender isn’t cut from a similar cloth to Ajer, he still fits the new manager’s style of play perfectly.

Instead of rampaging forward with the ball at his feet, Starfelt prioritises distribution, passing the ball out from the back in neat fashion. For instance, no player in the Russian top flight completed a higher degree of passes than his 91.4% last term.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Itakura is similar in this regard, remaining calm and composed with the ball at his feet. On loan from Manchester City at Dutch side Groningen last season, he was successful with 88% of his passes, the 14th greatest tally in the entire division.

He was incredibly eye-catching in the Eredivisie, earning fine praise from former Dutch footballer Haans Kray. He said: “One of the very best central defenders in the Eredivisie. He can play football well, he can head well and he is incredibly fast. He’s such a good player but Manchester City don’t see anything in him.”

With that in mind, the duo would offer a comfortable and reliable base ahead of the goalkeeper.

This is vitally important considering some of the mishaps to occur over the last 12 months. The Bhoys shipped 16 more goals than Rangers last season and have started this campaign in disastrous fashion.

Nir Bitton was sent off against FC Midtjylland last Tuesday and Vasilis Barkas made another howler, allowing the visitors to score.

Thus, the addition of Itakura may significantly strengthen their armoury. He ranks in the 88th percentile for tackles won (76%) while his 6 foot 1 frame ensures he prevails in 71% of his aerial battles.

The Japanese defender possesses a wide range of skills that could really take Postecoglou’s defence to a new level.

The manager must ensure that the 24-year-old becomes a Celtic player in the not too distant future.

AND in other news, Postecoglou can finally axe Bitton at Celtic by signing “exceptional” 6 ft 2 colossus…

CPFC: Fans react to Patrick Vieira latest

BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone provided an update on Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Patrick Vieira on Thursday.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles supporters gave their thoughts to the news on social media.

News broke on Tuesday regarding Vieira and Palace, with the two parties reaching an agreement in principle over the vacant managerial role.

Three days on and a move is yet to be announced, however, Stone admitted that there are no major issues and the Frenchman will be installed as Roy Hodgson’s replacement.

Vieira has been out of work since December after his sacking at Ligue 1 club Nice but now looks set to return to the dugout with the Eagles.

Recent reports elsewhere have suggested that Vieira could be handed an £80m transfer kitty this summer at Selhurst Park, with 11 senior players now out of contract at Selhurst Park.

@cpfc_xtra shared Stone’s update on Palace’s managerial hunt on Twitter.

Dasgupta talks of Test ambitions

There was a time when the legendary Rodney Marsh – the former world-record holder of most number of dismissals by a wicket-keeper – was nicknamed “Iron Gloves” for his dismal performances behind the stumps. And it was on Marsh’s advice that Deep Dasgupta, the modern “Butterfinger” wicketkeeper, got his first international breakthrough in South Africa – what a coincidence!Whether Dasgupts will be able to iron out his flaws and earn a name for himself in the Indian Test history, only time will tell. At the moment, he is in the toughest tour of his career and he readily admits it.”Yes, it’s important with a capital I. I’ve to bat well and keep better – it’s so simple to say, but so difficult to execute! And I have to do so at the first available opportunity. Otherwise my dream of continuing to play for as many days for my country will get a severe setback,” he admitted to this correspondent on the night before the first Test.He and Ajay Ratra are very good friends and good competitors for the wicketkeeper’s position in the Indian Test team. When Ratra made his debut at the Eden Gardens against the touring English side in the limited-over match there, Ratra thought Dasgupta should wish him good luck. Here, Dasgupta must have asked the same of him.In fact, Deep’s morale received a tremendous boost when Sachin Tendulkar decided to talk to him over the telephone during the Indian team’s stay in Kolkata. “It was so nice to receive that call from Sachin. He is a great cricketer yet he didn’t forget to call me, and sounded hopeful that I would soon be back in the team. I was overwhelmed,” Dasgupta said.He followed a tight schedule for practice and played well in the Deodhar and Duleep matches to earn another call from the national selectors. There is no mistaking the fact that he likes challenges. That’s why, as the established seniors went behind the curtains when the question of opening the innings came up, Dasgupta, with only one Test behind him, persuaded his captain to put his faith in him to open the innings. He, then, went on to get a 50 in only his second innings as an opener, saving the match for his country with Rahul Dravid. His batting saved him from being ousted from the team. “Yes, I like to open the innings and here my duty will be to give the team a good start so that the middle-order can capitalise on it. I am always in love with batting and I can bat wherever the team wants me,” he said. But keeping wicket for four sessions and changing gears to bat within ten minutes is not the easiest of jobs. Dasgupta, however, is not feeling it. He has to cement his place in the team and he is ready to do so with his trademark smile on his lips.Tackling pressure, according to his captain and statemate, is what international cricket is about. Dasgupta will have to do it for the team and himself at the very next opportunity, or he might never get the opportunity to do so again.

No segundo tempo, todo o time foi mudado:Prass; Fabiano, Vitão (do sub-20), Antônio Carlos e Egídio; Thiago Santos; Erik, Michel Bastos, Hyoran e Keno; Willian.
