Man City fans flock to Harry Kane update

Flocking to Twitter, a number of Manchester City fans have reacted to a transfer claim coming out of Eastlands involving Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The England international was a major target for Pep Guardiola in the summer, with City even lodging bids of £100m according to Sky Sports.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates-2/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, these efforts to sign Spurs’ prized asset weren’t enough, with the 29-year-old remaining in north London, thus ending City’s hopes of signing a world class centre-forward over that transfer window.

While Guardiola has stated to the press that he holds no pressing wish to sign a striker in January, The Athletic have come out with a claim to the contrary, and it involves Kane again.

According to their information, the Spaniard is still ‘desperate’ for City to sign a forward, with sources close to the Sky Blues boss believing that the Tottenham superstar is ‘perfect’ for them. The report added that a move for Kane ‘would be welcomed’ at Eastlands next month.

City fans erupt…

Kane is certainly not without his merits as a transfer target, especially considering that he can play as false nine and won the Premier League Golden Boot last year, scoring an incredible 23 goals and setting up 14 more in the top flight alone.

Taking this into account, it’s not surprising that some supporters still want him at the club, with Bradford City defender Liam Ridehalgh even calling Kane a ‘monster’.

However, others have reacted to this fresh claim with a bit of scepticism given the long-winded and eventually fruitless summer saga over Kane’s signature, not to mention their links to much younger options like Erling Haaland or Dusan Vlahovic.

Check out some of the mixed reactions to this transfer update below.

“Getting Kane who is almost 30 instead of chasing Haaland and Vlahovic, both 21, is madness and clueless.”

“I’m sorry but that boat has sailed. Don’t want him anywhere near the club. His drop in form just goes to show he’s on the decline. We need a striker who is going to flourish and has his best years in front of him. Haaland, Vlahovic, Felix are better suited.”

HBL gains crucial lead against SNGPL

A round-up of the second day’s action of the seventh round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2009-10

Cricinfo staff16-Nov-2009Group A
When the top two clash, expect an exciting match on the cards. As events unfolded on the second day at the Diamond Club Ground, both Habib Bank Limited (HBL) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) sweated over first-innings points. Resuming on 10 for 1, HBL were buoyed by Sham Massod’s 61 at the top of the order, but right-arm fast bowler Asad Ali’s 6 for 98 reduced them to 191 for 8. But defining contributions from Kamran Hussain (63), Abdur Rehman (45) and Fahad Masood (30 not out) ultimately helped HBL tiptoe past SNGPL’s first-innings total of 245.National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) took the patient route in search of a first-innings lead against Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) in Rawalpindi. Mohammad Talha was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up a five-for, as KRL were bowled out for 353, after adding 34 to their overnight score. Imran Javed was the star during NBP’s reply, compiling 60 off 132 balls, and putting together an unbeaten stand of 103 with captain Naumanullah (42 not out). NBP finished the day with seven wickets in hand, still 180 shy of first-innings points. It was the turn of captain Saeed Bin Nasir to score a hundred, following Azeem Ghumman’s stellar show the previous day as Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) powered their way to a huge total batting first against Lahore Shalimar at the Gaddafi Stadium. While Ghumman could add 40 to his overnight score of 143, Nasir smashed 11 fours en route to 101. Having declared on 422 for 6, SSGC then proceeded to remove the top three Lahore batsmen, to leave them tottering at 130 at the end of the day.A superb bowling spell by Tabish Khan could not rescue Karachi Whites, as they surrendered first-innings points to Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex . Tabish finished with 6 for 90, but every contribution from the WAPDA middle and lower orders were made to count, as they nosed ahead of Karachi’s first-innings total of 170, to finish on 222. Opener Mohtasim Ali (76) and wicketkeeper Mohammad Hasan (65) easily erased the deficit with a second-wicket stand of 146, but the WAPDA bowlers hit back with four wickets as Karachi took stumps with the score on 196.Zulqarnain Haider was in fine form for Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and his century gave them the upper hand against Pakistan Customs at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. His 161 off 302 balls comprised 21 boundaries as ZTBL powered on from 224 for 8 to finish on 358. The good work was carried on by Kashif Daud during the reply, as the right-arm fast bowler sent back three of the top six Customs batsmen, to leave them in trouble with a 215-run deficit.Group B
Faisalabad fast bowler Ahmed Hayat took 5 for 77 to limit Karachi Blues to 293 for 8 on the opening day at the National Stadium. Five Karachi batsmen got off to starts but only Adnan Baig scored more than 50. His 71 was the top score of an innings that slumped to 166 for 5 before picking itself up to reach 293. Tanvir Ahmed, the No. 9 batsman, scored an unbeaten 37 off 50 balls to take the innings into the second day.Sialkot restricted Rawalpindi to 215 in their first innings at the Jinnah Stadium. Resuming on 115 for 4, Rawalpindi slumped after their captain Naved Ashraf was dismissed for 59. Sialkot bowlers Naved Arif and Bilawal Bhatti took four wickets each but their batsmen’s poor first-innings performance meant that Rawalpindi still had a lead of 108. Sialkot wiped out that deficit by reaching 153 by stumps on the second day but lost four second-innings wickets. Ayaz Tasawwar was unbeaten on 52 and Sialkot will look to him to stretch the lead, which is presently 45.Islamabad’s bowlers dismissed Peshawar cheaply in the first-innings at the National Ground, enabling their team to take a firm grip on the match by stumps on the second day. Peshawar resumed on 47 for 2 and were soon skittled for 156, conceding a first-innings lead of 100. Nasrullah Khan, who finished with 54 for 5, reduced them to 107 for 8 and only a 36-ball 40 from No. 10 Nauman Habib lifted the innings at the end. Habib, and his new-ball partner Riaz Afridi, took two wickets apiece to dent Islamabad’s reply but the hosts reached 174 for 5, with a strong overall lead of 274.Lahore Ravi opener Kashif Siddiq missed out on a century but his valuable 95 at the top allowed his team to edge a lead against Quetta in Lahore. Siddiq was eventually one of Arshad Khan’s five wickets and the offspinner kept chipping away at the Lahore line-up. Mohammad Asim contributed an unbeaten 70 in the middle order and the hosts ended the day on 264, leading by 44 runs with only two wickets in hand.Mohammad Hafeez remained unbeaten on 84 but Multan struggled in their reply to Abbottabad’s first-innings total of 300 at Okara. Several other middle-order batsmen got starts but failed to make it count as Junaid Khan took 3 for 61 to restrict Multan to 207 for 7. Armaghan Elahi and Khalid Usman also took two wickets apiece for Abbottabad. Earlier in the day Multan had been dismissed for 300 after resuming on their overnight score on 279 for 9.

Celtic: Montgomery, Scales and Soro struggle vs Betis

Celtic ended their Europa League campaign with an impressive 3-2 win over Real Betis on Thursday evening.

Ange Postecoglou rang the changes to his side, however, he still ended up with more injuries to deal with, most notably Kyogo Furuhashi.

Stephen Welsh, Ewan Henderson and David Turnbull grabbed the goals for the Hoops, who will now head into the Europa Conference League in the New Year.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Opinions may differ, but here at The Transfer Tavern, we’ve looked into the three worst-rated Celtic players as per statistical specialists SofaScore, with players required to feature for at least 45 minutes for ranking.

Liam Scales 6.2/10

Scales was Celtic’s worst-rated player on the night, ending with a score of 6.2/10. The left-back lost the ball a whopping 18 times – more than any Celtic player.

The Irishman also lost six of his eight duels, failed to complete a cross or a dribble and committed two fouls.

Adam Montgomery 6.3/10

Montgomery is next on the list, playing ahead of Scales on the left-wing. The 19-year-old ended with a score of 6.3/10 in what was just his sixth start of the campaign.

He lost possession on 15 occasions in his 65-minute display and failed to complete a successful dribble.

The youngster didn’t attempt a cross or make a key pass and lost nine of his 14 duels overall.

Ismaila Soro 6.6/10

Soro completes the list with a slightly better score of 6.6/10. The holding midfielder was in a three-man midfield alongside James McCarthy and Liam Shaw for his sixth start of the season.

The Ivorian was booked, lost six of his 10 duels, gave possession away seven times and was dribbled past twice.

Soro didn’t have any impact going forward either and completed just 16 passes, making just 32 touches in his display before being replaced.

Conte eyeing Spurs’ new Dembele in January

Antonio Conte wants Tottenham Hotspur to sign Weston McKennie, who is a very familiar name to sporting director Fabio Paratici…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim the 52-year-old manager ‘appreciates’ the Juventus midfielder ‘a lot’ and envisions him becoming ‘the new [Arturo] Vidal’ under his stewardship.

At one stage, the 27-cap American looked destined to leave the Serie A giants this January but an exit is a little less certain after a breakthrough into the starting XI under Massimiliano Allegri in recent months.

However, the report claims that ‘anything can happen’ if Juventus receive a good offer for his services. It remains to be seen what sort of fee that could be, though Transfermarkt currently value him at £22.5m.

Watch out Skipp

Whilst Conte is said to be a massive fan of young Hotspur Way graduate Oliver Skipp, the arrival of McKennie in north London would certainly put his place amongst the starting XI at risk.

That ‘Vidal role’ is similar to what Mousa Dembele was so expertly deployed in during his time at the club, and the 23-year-old could certainly become a comparable player to the Belgian if he joins the club.

Described as an “outstanding talent” by former Schalke 04 boss David Wagner, McKennie is capable of being an absolute powerhouse across the engine room. “In the No.6 or No.8 position he has the mentality, a real working mentality that you need. And he’s brave on the ball as well. He can be one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga,” he added.

No other central midfielder is averaging a better WhoScored rating (6.73) for Allegri this campaign, whilst he attempts 2.2 tackles, makes 1.2 interceptions and manages 1.3 dribbles per 90 in the Italian top-flight.

This shows that not only is he a dominant ball-winning maestro but one that can drive the ball forward to contribute in the final third, much like Dembele under Mauricio Pochettino all those years ago.

Also dubbed a “leader” by Wagner and a “rock” by ex-Juve boss Andrea Pirlo, McKennie would be. an astute signing for sporting director Fabio Paratici to make but the consequence may fall at Skipp’s feet due to the two players occupying the same position.

It would be hard for Conte to axe Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as he is currently their best-performing player in the Premier League, earning a 7.15 rating, which is even more than top goalscorer Heung-min Son.

Therefore, it’s likely that the 21-year-old gem is most at risk, having garnered a rating of just 6.46, even if that’s a little unfair on his true performances.

Although, later down the line a duo of Skipp and McKennie could grace the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for years to come. It’s just in the short-term that he could be impacted severely, should the American join in January.

Worcestershire struggle despite Davies ton

A round-up from the latest Championship matches as Nottinghamshire take strides towards victory and Essex wrap up a two-and-a-half day win

Cricinfo staff23-Apr-2009Division One3rd daySteven Davies collects another boundary during his century but Worcestershire face a fight to avoid defeat•Getty Images

Nottinghamshire are on course for victory after Worcestershire limped to 24 for 3 in their second innings at Trent Bridge having failed to save the follow-on by two runs despite a fine century from Steven Davies. Batting a second time, Andre Adams claimed two wickets in three balls and Mark Ealham had Daryl Mitchell caught behind as Worcestershire ended the day as they start – firmly on the back foot. However, between times there was some impressive resistance especially from Davies who struck 126 and showed the talent that attracted the England selectors. Mitchell offered solid support with 80 before he became Graeme Swann’s first wicket, but Gareth Batty (22) and Ashley Noffke (39) formed useful stands. At 330 for 6 the follow-on was within sight only for Swann and Samit Patel to spin out the last four wickets for 24. Those two extra runs could be the difference a draw and a defeatA fascinating final day is in prospect at Hove as Sussex laboured to a lead of 138 with five wickets remaining against Lancashire. It was all even on first innings as Luke Wright claimed a career-best 5 for 80 to restrict Lancashire to 299, one short of a third batting point. Steven Croft fell without adding to his overnight 59 and Mark Chilton was trapped leg before for 89 as Lancashire missed the chance of a significant lead. Sajid Mahmood and James Anderson edged them ahead by 10 before Anderson once again starred with the ball. As in the first innings he nailed both openers – Chris Nash edging behind and Michael Yardy was bowled as he tried to shoulder arms – and after a stand of 50 between Ed Joyce and Murray Goodwin, Gary Keedy changed the game again. He had Goodwin stumped trying to drive through mid-on and trapped Matt Prior lbw in the space of three balls to really put the pressure on the home side. Joyce, for the second time in the match, was anchoring the order but Keedy had the final say when he struck with the last ball of the day to leave Lancashire fancying their chances.2nd dayFor a full report of Durham against Yorkshire at Chester-le-Street where Michael Vaughan and Steve Harmison went head-to-head click here. For a full report of Warwickshire’s game against Hampshire at Edgbaston where Jim Troughton hit a hundred and Marcus North made a hasty departure click here.Division Two3rd dayEssex overcame a small wobble to secure a seven-wicket victory shortly after lunch on the third day at Bristol against Gloucestershire. The home side added just four more to their overnight total before Vikram Banerjee became Ryan ten Doeschate’s eighth wicket of the match and James Foster claimed a record-equalling ninth catch. It left Essex needing 98, but they quickly slipped to 6 for 2 and suddenly the target looked a lot bigger. However, Matt Walker used all his experience to calm the situation and, although Jason Gallian also departed, captain Mark Pettini helped see the chase through to the end.2nd dayNormality returned to proceedings at Derby as Scott Newman’s century led a positive Surrey resurgence after they conceded a first-innings lead of 143 against Derbyshire. Newman scored almost as many as the whole Surrey side managed in the first innings before edging Garry Park late in the day for 124 as the visitors ended with a lead of 70. Laurie Evans’s dismissal, bowled by a shooter from Jonathan Clare, showed a run chase might not be easy. Derbyshire’s own advantage had been more considerable than might have been expected when they started the day seven down and just 21 to the good. However, Greg Smith showed runs could be scored on the pitch and Graham Wagg chipped in with 34. Then Ian Hunter hit well for 47 in a last-wicket stand 83 but couldn’t stay long enough for Smith to reach a richly deserved hundred. For a full report from Middlesex and Glamorgan at Lord’s where Phillip Hughes continued a good match for Australians click here.

West Brom handed double injury boost

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a double injury boost ahead of Friday night’s Championship clash at The Hawthorns.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Express & Star, Valerien Ismael revealed that both Alex Mowatt and Matt Clarke are in contention to start the fixture against Birmingham City tonight.

The midfielder has recovered a foot injury picked up in the 1-0 defeat to Stoke City before the international break, while the defender has missed Albion’s last seven fixtures with a hamstring injury.

Regrading Mowatt’s injury, Ismael said: “For us it’s good news – it’s a relief for us that it’s not broken. It’s good for us that he has trained these last two days with the squad and he’s back in the squad. Normally, as long as something doesn’t happen and change overnight, he’ll be okay for the game.”

Regarding Clarke’s recovery, the Frenchman added: “He’s back in training, back in the squad and trained very well. Now we need to manage him through these games.

“The Championship is ruthless. We play every three days, so we must learn from the first block with him and what happened to make sure that he can come through the games without another issue.

“He is fine, he is available, he trained well. We’re happy he’s back in the squad, but we need to find the balance and to manage him now. He’s very motivated, he wants to play, but we learn from the first block.”

Big double boost

Considering just how impressive both Mowatt and Clarke have been for West Brom since joining the club this summer, the news that the duo are available for the derby against Birmingham is sure to have Baggies fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 11 Championship appearances this season, the £6.3m-rated Mowatt has scored three goals, provided one assist and has created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 1.1 shots and making 1.5 key passes per match.

The central midfielder has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making 1.9 interceptions, two tackles and 0.7 clearances and winning 5.5 duels per game. These returns have seen the £6.5k-per-week man average a SofaScore match rating of 7.21, ranking him as West Brom’s second best performer in the Championship so far.

Meanwhile, over his three league fixtures for Albion, the £2.7m-rated Clarke has made 2.3 interceptions, one tackle and 2.7 clearances per game and has won 7.3 duels per match.

These metrics have seen the centre-back earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as the Baggies’ joint eighth-best performer in the league.

As such, the return of both players will undoubtedly increase Ismael’s chances of securing a positive result against Birmingham, something the Frenchman will be desperately seeking following his side’s first league defeat of the season against Stoke City last time out.
