Slot's 4/10 flop who had a "nightmare" must never start for Liverpool again

Liverpool’s dire run of form continued on Saturday afternoon. The Reds were defeated 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at Anfield, leaving Arne Slot’s side with just three wins in their last 11 games in all competitions, and just 18 points to their name in the Premier League.

It was a hugely underwhelming performance from the reigning Premier League champions. Their poor form sees them slip to 11th in the top flight, with just 18 points to their name. They are already eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.

In terms of the Saturday afternoon clash at Anfield, a first-half strike from defender Murillo, and second-half goals from Nicolo Savona and captain Morgan Gibbs-White were enough to give Sean Dyche’s side all three points.

The Reds dominate the ball, having 76% possession, and 21 shots at the Forest goal, but simply didn’t do anything of substance. They lacked real bite in attack, with just four of their shots actually finding the target. Forest, on the other hand, had seven shots on target out of 15.

There were some poor performances across the board from Slot’s side, although a few stand out in particular.

Liverpool’s worst players vs. Forest

It was yet another tough day at the office for Liverpool, with one man struggling to get into the game being Liverpool striker Alexander Isak. The Swede went another game without finding the back of the net, still chasing his first goal in the Premier League for Liverpool.

Liverpool content creator George Scaife expressed his surprise at the fact that Isak got just 15 touches of the ball against Forest. Indeed, there was a lack of service against Forest for the Reds’ number nine, who only managed one shot on goal.

Another man who left a lot to be desired for Liverpool on Saturday afternoon was Alexis Mac Allister. The 2022 World Cup winner was part of yet another reshuffled midfield, and although he almost put Liverpool ahead, he struggled to contribute anything of note.

Indeed, the disappointing performance from Mac Allister was noticed by Liverpool World journalist Will Rooney. He gave the Argentina international a 4/10 rating, criticising him for the fact that he ‘stupidly dived in’ on Neco Williams, which allowed the former Liverpool man to find a cross leading to Savona’s goal.

Isak and Mac Allister certainly struggled against Dyche’s men, but there was one player who was perhaps worse.

Liverpool’s worst player vs. Forest

It was yet another day to forget for Reds centre-back Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchman’s poor afternoon was summed up by James Pearce, The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter. He described it as a “nightmare” and said it was “error after error” at Anfield.

His once-formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk has been breached plenty of times this season. Indeed, that was something that Forest found it easy to do on Saturday, given that they bagged three goals.

Some of the stats from the 26-year-old’s performance against Forest highlight how tough a day it was for him. Konate only won four out of seven attempted duels, conceded two fouls and was dribbled past once.

Indeed, Rooney gave the former RB Leipzig man a scathing review. The journalist rated his showing a 4/10, explaining that he “should have dealt with the ball better,” which led to a corner from which Forest opened the scoring, and “made a meal of the cross” from which Forest had their goal ruled out.

This season, Konate, who is out of contract in the summer, has put in several underwhelming showings. As recently as September, it was reported that Real Madrid will try and sign the Frenchman, either on a free if he doesn’t sign a new contract, or in January.

Slot and the higher-ups at Anfield now have a decision to make. With Konate’s performances and contractual situation, they may well decide to recruit in January and look to move on from the Frenchman.

They have been linked with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi again in the last few weeks, after failing to sign him on deadline day. Perhaps the Reds will be of the view that it is best they cut their losses on Konate and sell him to Los Blancos, or elsewhere, and reinvest that money.

Rockies Fire Hitting Coach Amid 3-15 Start to 2025 Season

The Colorado Rockies are shaking things up amid their shaky start to the 2025 season.

The team announced on Thursday afternoon that they've relieved hitting coach Hensley Meulens of his duties. Clint Hurdle, special assistant to the GM, will take over for the remainder of the season.

The Rockies have the worst record in baseball through the first month-plus of the season, starting the 2025 campaign just 3-15. They've scored a league-low 52 runs and allowed a league-high 103—resulting in an MLB-worst -51 run differential.

Thursday night’s 8-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers—despite being their highest-scoring game in over 10 days—was the straw that broke the camel's back for Meulens. Hurdle, a longtime Rockies coach and their manager from 2002 to '09, will now take over in his place.

Colorado is off on Thursday before returning to the diamond on Friday night, when they welcome the Washington Nationals to Coors Field for an 8:40 p.m. EST first pitch.

Not just Dalot: "Embarrassing" £42m star must not start for Man Utd again

Since INOES took over the club, Manchester United have not been afraid to make some major sales in the transfer market. Be it academy players or big-money stars leaving for less than they cost, Ruben Amorim’s squad has a new look.

Perhaps the biggest name to leave, albeit only on loan, was Marcus Rashford. He is thriving at Barcelona, where he has 15 goal involvements in just 16 games. The likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were moved on permanently over the summer too.

It will be fascinating to see who leaves over the next few transfer windows. If United are looking to cash in on stars who don’t fit Amorim’s system, Diogo Dalot could be on that list.

Dalot's limits in Amorim's system

It has not been easy for Dalot to adapt to Amorim’s infamous 3-4-2-1 system. The Portuguese is a right-back by trade, but can operate on the opposite side, too. This means the Red Devils boss has relied on him playing as a wing-back.

In principle, this is fine, but the wing-backs in United’s current system are essentially wingers. Often, they are the furthest players forward when attacking, which is why traditional full-backs like Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazroui have struggled more than wingers like Amad.

Dalot certainly fits into this category. The 26-year-old has played 45 times under his countryman at Old Trafford, with every single one of those appearances coming as a wing-back. To break that down further, 22 have come on the right, and the other 23 on the left, so it is an almost equal split.

Certainly, the United number 2 has left a little to be desired creatively. He’s only scored and assisted seven goals, with his strike against Lyon in the famous 5-4 Europa League win an example of how high he can get as a wing-back.

Whatever Dalot’s future is at United due to his suitability for the system, there is another player who should be taking his leave before too long.

Not just Dalot: Big-money flop must leave Man Utd

INEOS have certainly worked hard in the transfer market, cashing in on players who either aren’t good enough for the club or are not a good fit for Amoirm’s system. However, their work is not done yet.

One of the names who could be top of the sales list at Old Trafford is Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Their number 25 has yet to find his best form at Old Trafford since his big-money £42m move last summer.

His time as a Red Devils player has been incredibly disappointing, given the price United paid. He’s played 55 times for the club so far, even chipping in with two goals and five assists, but has looked off the pace in the Premier League.

One of the biggest issues with Ugarte is his lack of technical ability on the ball. The former Sporting CP star, who played under Amorim in Portugal, does not excel at progressing the ball forward, which is a real drawback to his game.

The numbers are there to support that theory as well. In the Premier League last season, Ugarte averaged just 3.08 progressive passes per 90 minutes, ranking him in the 18th percentile for midfielders.

Off the ball, he can be an effective ball-winner, but is rash, and committed 2.07 fouls each game last term.

There are certainly lots of negatives to Ugarte’s game. He is certainly ineffective on the ball, and at times, can be too lightweight without it, leading him to recklessly dive in.

It feels like he is yet to win over the fans, with Red Devils social media presence Alex Turk calling him “embarrassing” earlier this season.

With these things in mind, it would not be a surprise if United looked to cash in on the midfielder. They may not recoup much of the £50m fee, but would at least save on his £120k per week wages. In any case, they would be able to strengthen in midfield with a more progressive player.

Their own Pep: "Incredible" manager favourite to replace Amorim at Man Utd

Manchester United supporters have been starved of huge success for over a decade now, with no manager able to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Countless managers have tried and failed to replicate such feats, with Ruben Amorim the latest to try and end the decade-long drought for league glory.

However, it’s safe to say the 40-year-old has failed miserably at the task, as seen by his record of nine defeats in his last 15 top-flight matches in charge of the Red Devils.

The former Sporting CP boss arrived with huge expectations, but he’s failed to live up to them, with his recent slump on the field potentially spelling the end to his time at Old Trafford.

It would be a surprise to no one around the world that he could be replaced in the near future, potentially opening the door for one man to take the reins at the Theatre of Dreams.

The favourites for the Man Utd manager role

Over the last couple of days, former England boss Gareth Southgate has emerged as a potential candidate to take over as United manager should Amorim lose his job.

It’s been reported that the 55-year-old would be open to the role after previously being linked with the role on various occasions throughout his managerial career.

However, he’s not the only option currently in the hierarchy’s sights, with former Barcelona boss Xavi also under consideration, according to one outlet in Spain.

They claim that the Spaniard is emerging as one of the favourites to take over in Manchester, with the 45-year-old currently without a job after leaving Barcelona back in May 2024.

Despite the interest in his services, they may have to act quickly, with Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad also approaching him about taking over after Laurent Blanc was sacked.

Why United’s latest target would be their own Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has been a boss who has constantly proven his worth against United over recent years, often causing the Red Devils fanbase pain in the Manchester Derby.

In his 30 outings against the club, he’s won 63% of the matches – with his tally of 19 wins the fourth-most he’s achieved against any side in his managerial career to date.

His time at the Etihad has seen him win six Premier League titles since he took the reins back in the summer of 2016 – subsequently dominating England’s top-flight after his appointment.

There’s no doubt the fans of the Red Devils must wish they had themselves a manager of such a calibre, especially given the dismal levels they’ve had to endure over the last couple of seasons.

However, that could all be about to change with the potential appointment of Xavi in the near future, with the Spaniard possessing a very similar route to his compatriot in his managerial career.

Both starred at Barcelona as players before making the jump into management, with both going on to lead the Catalonian outfit in LaLiga and the Champions League.

Guardiola has made the move to England and succeeded, with Xavi having the chance to do the same if he does get offered the United job in the weeks ahead.

His stats during his time in charge of the Spanish giants are nothing short of remarkable, potentially having the quality to take the Red Devils back to their former glory.

The 45-year-old, who’s been labelled “incredible” by Guardiola himself, achieved a 70% win record for Barca, winning 71 of his 102 matches in charge of the club.

He also achieved a staggering 2.3 points per game record, conceding just 87 times in the process – highlighting his ability to create a well-drilled and defensive outfit – something which the Red Devils have greatly lacked.

Xavi also managed to win the LaLiga title back in the 2022/23 campaign, potentially making him the perfect man to end United’s extended wait for a league triumph.

It remains unclear how long Amorim will be given to turn things around, but it’s evident that the 40-year-old is on borrowed time given the recent form in the Premier League.

However, there’s no denying that other options are being lined up by the board, with the former Barca boss potentially the perfect boss to fill the void at Old Trafford.

Harris stars again as Surrey see off Essex challenge

Australia allrounder takes three-for and then smashes 31 off 17 to ensure visitors get home

Grace Harris starred with bat and ball as Surrey got back to winning ways with a five-wicket win over hosts Essex to return to the top of the Vitality Blast standings. The Australian allrounder took 3 for 26, including two caught and bowled, before striking the game’s only six in a swashbuckling 31 as the visitors chased down a target of 149 with nine balls to spare, despite 3 for 33 for in-form home seamer Esmae MacGregor.Harris shared a stand of 40 with Kira Chathli to allow Surrey to recover from 67 for 3 at the halfway mark.Earlier, Grace Scrivens and Lauren Winfield-Hill shared an opening stand of 75 but Surrey applied the squeeze with Tash Farrant removing the middle order on route to figures of 3 for 20.Scrivens bristled with aggression early, sweeping Alice Capsey square for four before belting another from the England allrounder over cover. This proved the hors d’oeuvre to the fifth over where Scrivens showcased shots all around the wicket to sweep, drive, cut and paddle Tilly Corteen-Coleman for four boundaries.Winfield-Hill, badly missed by Harris on 7, twice flayed fours back passed the bowler as the opening stand swelled.Scrivens was given a life on 38 when Phoebe Franklin shelled a tough caught and bowled chance, but the Essex skipper departed to the first ball of the next over caught at cover by Harris.Winfield-Hill departed soon afterwards, chipping a catch to short fine and the usually big-hitting Maddie Penna took 24 balls over 27 as only three fours came in the second half of the innings.Controversy came when Cordelia Griffith was given out caught on the boundary first ball by Danni-Wyatt Hodge, who stepped beyond the rope before coming back inside to complete the catch. Replays as to whether the England opener had stood on the rope ball in hand were inconclusive.Skipper Smith opened the chase in typically belligerent fashion, bludgeoning five boundaries in the first three overs, the pick, a lofted drive over mid-on which almost cleared the ropes.MacGregor ended the revelry as Smith edged onto the stumps and Capsey, back from England duty, was then brilliantly caught and bowled first ball by the 20-year-old. Chathli negotiated the hat-trick ball but Surrey were only 39 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.Wyatt-Hodge top edged one over the wicketkeeper’s head which fell to safety, was then spilt by Griffith at deep cover on 20, but failed to make the most of her good fortune, drilling one from Abtaha Maqsood down the throat of mid-off.With Surrey behind in the chase Australian Harris took up the baton, cutting and driving for four, while Chathli employed the reverse and conventional sweep for successive boundaries off Sophia Smale. However, having got to 40, Surrey’s wicketkeeper top edged the Welsh spinner to short fine.Harris, sent the first six of the day over the marquee only for MacGregor to exact revenge next ball, but Alice Davidson-Richards and Phoebe Franklin saw Surrey home without further loss.

Nottingham Forest make latest UEFA complaint after Europa League defeat as Ange Postecoglou faces crucial moment as head coach after worst start in 100 years

Nottingham Forest have officially lodged a complaint with UEFA following their dramatic 3-2 Europa League home defeat to FC Midtjylland, as the pressure mounts on manager Ange Postecoglou just six games into his reign at the City Ground. Forest chiefs were left incensed by the controversial officiating during Thursday’s European clash, which saw the visitors escape with three points amid a series of questionable decisions from French referee Willy Delajod.

Forest erupt after Europa League chaos

According to Delajod’s performance is at the heart of Forest’s outrage. Despite Midtjylland’s bruising, physical approach, the official showed just one yellow card to the Danish side, to wing-back Kevin Mbabu, while three Forest players were booked: Morato, Igor Jesus, and Morgan Gibbs-White.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportReferee under fire after Midtjylland mayhem

A particularly reckless challenge by Denil Castillo on Elliot Anderson early in the contest summed up the inconsistency, with the Midtjylland midfielder somehow escaping with only a verbal warning. Forest sources say the stop-start nature of the officiating killed their rhythm and denied them the chance to build any attacking momentum.

Ange under fire: Six games, no wins and no mercy

The defeat has left Postecoglou’s position hanging by a thread. The Australian boss, who only took over in the summer, has endured a nightmare start to life in Nottingham, with no wins from his first six games in charge. This is the worst record by a Forest manager for over 100 years, since John Baynes went winless in any of his first seven games in 1925.

Thursday’s loss marked yet another low point, with sections of the City Ground crowd turning on the manager by chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning!”; a brutal soundtrack for a coach already fighting for survival. Fans also resurrected songs for former manager Nuno Espírito Santo, who was sacked only last month but has since resurfaced as West Ham boss.

Sunday’s clash with Newcastle could well determine Postecoglou’s fate. Club insiders admit that failure to end the winless run will almost certainly trigger a managerial change during the break. Forest’s owners are said to be “deeply concerned” about the team’s direction and fear that another loss could see morale sink even lower.

Chelsea looking to do "early deal" for potential £44m-plus striker after Hato

Chelsea transfer chiefs could actually be in the market for another striker after sealing a £35 million deal for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato earlier this week, despite already bringing in Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this window.

Hato has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract after completing a medical on Friday, with the Dutchman set to provide cover for Marc Cucurella at left-back whilst also potentially reinforcing Enzo Maresca’s central defensive options from time to time.

The 19-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after making over 110 senior appearances for Ajax, despite his young age, which includes experience in European competitions as well.

Whilst Hato began his career predominantly at centre-half, Chelsea agree with former Ajax manager, Francesco Farioli, that his future is in the full-back area.

“Jorrel started as a central defender, but under our guidance he became a full-back at national team level,” said Farioli, via Ben Jacobs on X.

“This kind of transformation stems from a detailed analysis of his technical and physical attributes. “Hato has excellent technical skills, he’s physically strong and fast, and he’s good in one-on-one situations. While he may not have a natural defensive instinct as a centre-back, his experience in that role gave him good game-reading abilities.

“Ajax still viewed him as a central defender, but I believe that at the very highest levels, like the Premier League, a player who stands at 1.81m will struggle to play centrally, especially in physically demanding duels.

Jorrel Hato

“In my opinion, his future lies more as a left-back, a position that requires both attacking and defensive qualities and fits better with his characteristics.”

Chelsea’s immediate next transfer plans will most likely revolve around their attack.

RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons remains in talks to join Chelsea, with the Netherlands international opting out of training on Friday and removing Leipzig from his Instagram bio as he pushes for a Stamford Bridge move (Fabrizio Romano).

Chelsea are also expected to bid for Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho in what would be a separate deal to Simons, with Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha remaining on BlueCo’s radar too.

Chelsea looking to strike "early" cut-price deal for Emmanuel Emegha

Reports suggest that Chelsea could still sign another striker if Nicolas Jackson leaves, and Emegha is chief among their targets after an excellent season in Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old was clocked as the fastest player in France’s top flight last season with Chelsea looking to strike an “early deal” for Emegha, anticipating that his price tag could soar to £44 million-plus in the next few years if they don’t act now.

That is according to Telegraph journalist Matt Law, who told the London is Blue podcast this week that Chelsea aim to sign the Dutchman for a cheaper fee this

window.

Emanuel Emegha

“I was told by someone who works around the Strasbourg end of things, that they believe that one day this guy could be a €50m-plus striker,” said Law.

“I think maybe they’re looking to do an early deal for him, to get him into a Chelsea player, is looking at that fair market value.

“Because if you do it now, you can probably do it around, I’m guessing here. I don’t know that this is a figure, but say €25m (£22m). If you do it another year down the line, you might be looking at a fair market value of around €40m (£35m).”

Emegha bagged 14 Ligue 1 goals last term, alongside being Ligue 1’s most explosive player, but it is unclear what Chelsea’s plans will be for him, or whether he’d be thrust straight into Maresca’s first team.
