  Di Matteo, speaking in association with , told GOAL when asked if Jackson – who has gone six games without a goal – can become the Didier Drogba-esque star that Chelsea are looking for: “I like Jackson. I can see why managers like him as well. This season he has scored quite a few goals. He has had some harsh criticism last season. He is a young player, most of them are young, and it takes a bit of time to get used to the Premier League and English football. He works very hard for the team. If you want to press as a team, he’s the first one to start it and does that so well. He’s a very unselfish player.

  “I think it’s just a matter of time before he starts banging 20-odd goals. Maybe this season he has a chance. I would keep giving him the confidence. Do they need another No.9? Maybe a different kind of player to Jackson as an option. He has different options out there, they can play with a false nine. There is a really good prospect in the wings, the Spanish player [Marc Guiu], he looks very good.”

  “Enzo is a World Cup winner, there is no doubt about his quality and leadership – I think that is probably why he is captain, because he has leadership qualities. He was at Brighton and you could see the quality and this season he has confirmed what sort of player he is and what he will give to the team.”

Sky reporter Dan Bardell has suggested that Aston Villa boss Unai Emery could now decide to drop a £120,000-per-week star from his starting eleven.

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey and marquee summer signing Amadou Onana wrapped up a crucial and convincing 3-0 win in their first game back playing in Europe’s most prestigious competition since the 1980s.

Emery will be pleased with how Villa dominated the play in periods, finishing the game with 20 attempts on goal and the majority of possession, with Villa opening their Champions League account in excellent fashion.

Speaking to TNT Sports after their thumping victory, Emery dedicated the win to former Aston Villa striker Gary Shaw, who passed away aged 63.

“This victory is for Gary Shaw,” said Emery on Villa’s 3-0 win at Young Boys. “We [continued in] the Champions League the way they finished 42 years ago. We want to dedicate this victory to Gary Shaw and his family.

“It was difficult. Our experiences last year [in the Europa Conference League] show that. We focused very well for 90 minutes to be consistent. We were adapting on the pitch. We always respected them.

“We have to create a new way. What we created in the Conference League last season was fantastic.”

Now, attention turns to Villa’s Midlands derby clash against Wolves in the Premier League this afternoon, and it will be fascinating to see how Emery sets up his team at home. Domestically, they’ve started the new campaign in equally promising fashion to their European adventures – winning three out of their opening four league games of the season so far.

Gary O’Neil’s Wolves, by contrast, are yet to win a single game and have been on the wrong side of thumping defeats to the likes of Chelsea. We’ve predicted how Villa will line up against Wolves today, but Bardell has his own verdict.

Bardell suggests Emery could drop Aston Villa star Lucas Digne

Speaking to Villa News, the Sky reporter suggested Lucas Digne may not be in the starting line up this afternoon in favour of summer signing Ian Maatsen.

The £120,000-per-week defender has started all four of their league games thus far, and played 88 minutes of their win over Young Boys. He’s chalked up two assists in that time as well, but Bardell claims Digne could be dropped by Villa for today’s game against Wolves.

“I think if we didn’t have this cup game on Tuesday, I think there is a decent chance [Jhon] Duran might have started against Wolves,” said Bardell.

“There is going to be a time when he starts games in the Premier League and there will be an element of rotation with Ollie Watkins. Maybe we’ll see Maatsen on Saturday instead of Lucas Digne. Other than that I don’t envisage many changes. I think because we played on Tuesday there’s been enough downtime going into this game.“

Nick Gubbins, the Middlesex top-order batter, is close to completing a move to Hampshire which will see him join the club on loan for the rest of the season as a precursor to a permanent deal.Gubbins, 27, was Middlesex’s leading scorer in their County Championship-winning season in 2016 with 1,409 first-division runs at 61.26 including four hundreds. He has been part of several England Lions squads across formats in the years since, but struggled to score consistently in red-ball cricket, averaging 24.15, 34.41 and 22.08 in the three Championship seasons between 2017 and 2019.His form has improved in the last two years, with a first-class average of 37.56 since the start of last summer’s Bob Willis Trophy, and he made a brilliant fourth-innings 124 against Surrey at The Oval in May from No. 3. But with his contract up at the end of the season, he has decided to turn down an extension at Middlesex and join Hampshire instead.Gubbins has made three appearances in the T20 Blast this season but dropped out of the squad for Friday night’s game against Somerset, and it is anticipated that his move will be confirmed in the coming days, with a loan for the rest of the season preceding a multi-year contract. “New Zealand is a good team playing at home, but you will see a competitive series”

Rauf believes the amount of cricket that is played requires him to keep evolving around the stock balls and variations in pace, and said he wouldn’t like to tone down his “natural” aggression.”I have a clear mindset with my pace and 140+ [kph] is my average speed,” Rauf said at a press conference held on Monday. “But with Waqar Younis [Pakistan’s bowling coach], I think he is all in for pace, [and he] keeps on empathising [with me] while making me work on my line and length. There are so many things I am learning from him – like bowling yorkers using the crease, and he was best at it.”I understand these days [with] the kind of cricket being played, I can’t be predictable with my pace. You obviously have to keep on evolving with the other stocks. Bowling with pace is okay, but bowling slower ones with different lines are the points of discussion with Waqar . I am learning in practice and applying in games.”Rauf’s aggression while bowling has also often been a talking point – he became a subject of criticism for his controversial throat-slicing wicket celebration in the BBL last year – and exuberant celebrations have at times seen him part with some of his match fee.”Aggression is important as a fast bowler and it comes naturally,” Rauf said. “I am not wearing it, it’s just there and I play with it. Sometimes I react, because as a bowler you get hurt when you concede a boundary. It’s not like I am unhappy with the batsman, but it’s basically something that I am not happy with myself.”It’s how a fast bowler works; it’s just natural. I am happy the way my career is being worked out and I want to be remembered as a renewed fast bowler who has done well for this country. I am fully focused on my cricket and performances.”

I played some cricket in Australia last year [during the 2019-20 BBL], and pitches [here] are similar [to Australia]. Rauf can regularly touch the 150kph mark, with his sheer pace catching the eye of the PSL franchise Lahore Qalandars in their player-hunt program. His development became a success story instantly when he signed a BBL contract with the Melbourne Stars last year, for whom he grabbed 20 wickets in ten games, including 5 for 27 against the Hobart Hurricanes and a hat-trick against the Sydney Thunder. His elevation was quick and unorthodox, not having climbed the usual ladder of the domestic set-up.Rauf’s abilities were only discovered in 2018 by which time he was 25. A T20 specialist, he has so far played 52 T20s and taken 78 wickets at 19.37. His form led to a surprise call-up to the Pakistan side for the home T20Is against Bangladesh this January, and even made his debut in the first game in Lahore. Since then, he hasn’t missed any of Pakistan’s T20Is, having played all eight games and picked up 11 wickets at 23.63. With that success, his ODI debut also followed this season in the first match against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi.But despite his pace, Rauf says he doesn’t want to be a one-dimensional fast bowler. “Pace is always a requirement in international cricket, and all I want is to maintain my pace and never let it go down,” he said. “That is one thing where you always have a chance against any good batsman in the world and give him a tough time.”He is presently with the Pakistan team in New Zealand, training and making most out of the time during the 14-day quarantine period. Though Rauf has never played in New Zealand before, he is relying on the inputs provided by Younis when it comes to assessing the New Zealand pitches. He also quashed any sense of under-preparedness with the side having to deal with an extended quarantine, instead saying he got enough practice during their available sessions to work on his skills, while also discussing about the pitches and the conditions.”I obviously haven’t played cricket in New Zealand, but Waqar is there with all the experience to guide me,” he said. “I played some cricket in Australia last year [during the 2019-20 BBL], and pitches [here] are similar [to Australia]. New Zealand is a good team playing at home in their own conditions, but you will see a competitive series. I know their players… how well they play at home. But we also have a good history playing in New Zealand. We did well in the past and have the capacity to do well this time too.”

A vontade do lateral-direito pode pesar para o acordo – mas isto não quer dizer que ele vai aceitar “qualquer valor”, vale ressaltar.

O contrato oferecido pelo Botafogo é de um valor inicial de salário para a atual temporada, com as cifras podendo ser aumentadas em caso de acesso à Série A do ano que vem. O vínculo seria de três anos. No momento, o valor das luvas – e a forma como elas serão pagas – ainda são um entrave.
