Kuhn and Denly hundreds as Kent make light of big chase

Joe Denly has handed over the captaincy to Sam Billings with Kent in excellent shape

ECB Reporters Network03-Jun-2018
ScorecardHeino Kuhn and Joe Denly hit centuries as Kent secured their fifth successive Royal London One-day Cup win and their second high-scoring victory in Beckenham within 72 hours by sweeping aside Gloucestershire to triumph by seven wickets.Chasing 323 for victory, Spitfires eased home with 21 balls to spare with Denly unbeaten on 109 for a victory that moves Kent up to second place in a highly combative south group.Kent made a solid start to their pursuit, reaching 66 within their 10 powerplay overs before opening bat Daniel Bell-Drummond chipped a Craig Miles’ length ball to mid-wicket to go for 40.With good running between the wickets Heino Kuhn and Joe Denly took the hosts to three figures in the 16th over to ensure they remained on track with the required rate.Fresh from his maiden Kent hundred on this ground on Friday, Kolpak signing Heino continued his fine form with a 44-ball half-century with six fours and a six as Kent reached 164 for one at the half-way stage.Denly posted his 50 from 61 balls as he and Kuhn beat Kent’s second-wicket record for List A cricket of 131 set by Trevor Ward and Chris Cowdrey at Canterbury in 1990.The experienced second-wicket pair marched on, setting the highest List A stand for any wicket on the ground and then reaching 152 to pass Kent’s List A best stand for any wicket against Gloucestershire recorded by Ed Smith and Matt Walker at the St Lawrence ground in 1984.
Kuhn notched the 10th List A century of his career and his second here inside three days by cutting his 90th delivery from Benny Howell to the ropes for his 11 four to go with his two sixes.Kuhn’s fun ended with his score on 110 when he just failed to clear the ropes at long-off where George Hankins held on to a good overhead chance to end the stand worth 186 in 28.1 overs. Kuhn had faced 102 balls.Craig Miles held a stunning low catch in his follow-through that accounted for Sam Billings cheaply and, with 64 required off the last 10 overs, Denly reached his second century of the competition from 104 balls with seven fours and three sixes. While Denly continued to supply the finesse, Alex Blake sidled in to provide the muscle with an unbeaten 44. Blake hit the six over mid-wicket off Miles to raise Kent’s 300 and 22 in total off the over as Kent won at the canter.Gloucestershire, batting first after winning the toss, made good use of another Beckenham shirtfront prepared by Kent’s deputy head groundsman Adrian Llong, to post 322 for eight – comfortably their best List A total in the 56 previous one-day meetings between the counties.Visiting openers Chris Dent and Hankins raced to 70 without loss after clobbering 10 fours and a six during the 10-over powerplay.
Hankins reached his third 50 of the campaign from 55 balls and with seven fours, then Dent clipped six over mid-wicket off Darren Stevens to raise the Gloucestershire 100. The left-hander then reached his half-century from 39 balls and with seven fours to go with a brace of sixes. The visiting openers added 132 before Darren Stevens, fresh from his career-best figures here on Friday, broke through to have Dent, on 63, well held at mid-wicket by a diving Calum Haggett.Stevens struck again to have Benny Howell caught at fine leg when attempting to lap-sweep, then Gareth Roderick holed out to ‘cow corner’ to give leg-spinner Joe Denly his only success.Hankins was eight runs short of his hundred when he advanced looking to drive against Matt Henry only to york himself, lose off stump and depart after a 120-ball stay. With wickets in hand and more than 13 overs remaining, the experienced pairing of Jack Taylor and Ian Cockbain went for their shots and upped the tempo. Taylor took three sixes off a Mitch Claydon over to reach a 37-ball 50 then Cockbain reached the milestone from 41 balls as Gloucestershire.Taylor clipped to long off in the penultimate over to give, then four balls later, Ryan Higgins holed out to Sean Dickson on the ropes at long on to give Haggett a couple of deserved wickets. Two run outs in the final over accounted for Coackbain and Ryan Higgins as Kent were left to chase at 6.46 an over.

Taylor talked about as one of the greats – Hesson

Even though Mike Hesson avoided talking about Ross Taylor’s position in the T20 team, the New Zealand coach spoke highly of Taylor as an ODI batsman

Andrew McGlashan23-Feb-2017New Zealand coach Mike Hesson is unsure about Ross Taylor’s future as a T20 cricketer, but he has no doubt that the batsman should be considered one of their greats in the 50-over game.Taylor became New Zealand’s leading ODI century-maker with his 17th hundred in Christchurch and completed a unique set of centuries against all Full Member teams. He also became the fourth and quickest New Zealander to score 6000 ODI runs. When asked if Taylor gets the recognition he deserves, Hesson said: “I think he’s always talked about as one of the greats. His record suggests he should be seen in that light. We are all delighted Ross has the record he deserves.”Hesson, however, refused to be drawn into any debate over Taylor’s T20 position and whether the 32-year-old batsman had a point to prove following his omission from the one-off match against South Africa.”I think Ross always wants to put a big score out there, which is why he’s so valuable for us in one-day cricket,” Hesson said. “I’ve suggested all the way along that Ross is one of the first picked in one-day cricket, as he rightly should be. Yesterday was another example of how good he is in this format. In the next 12 months we’ve got loads of one-day cricket and that’s our priority.”Although the major partnership in New Zealand’s 289 for 4 was the 123 added by Taylor and James Neesham for the fifth wicket, Hesson said it was the earlier work that proved crucial after New Zealand were put in to bat. Taylor and Kane Williamson strung a third-wicket partnership of 104 runs – their 11th century stand in ODIs – which led former captain Brendon McCullum to tweet they are the “best 3/4 punch in World cricket!” – a regular comment during his international days.”I thought it was a clinical batting performance from the whole group,” Hesson said. “Having got chucked in, it was quite a soft surface, so in the first hour Dean [Brownlie] and Kane did an excellent job; then Kane and Ross. Ross and James [Neesham] at the end were outstanding.”Next month, Taylor will have the chance to improve on a disappointing Test record against South Africa. He averages 24.22 from seven matches, without a half-century, which is his poorest return against any opposition. Only South Africa and Bangladesh, against whom he made 60 and 77 last month, are missing from his Test century list.”A Test hundred against South Africa is something he’s aware of and would like to get, and we’d certainly like to see that in the next month or so,” Hesson said. “But we’ve also got to celebrate how good he was yesterday.”

De Villiers to play for Tridents in CPL 2016

AB de Villiers has signed up to play for the Barbados Tridents in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League despite an assertion that he will look to reduce his workload after the World T20

Firdose Moonda11-Feb-2016AB de Villiers has signed up to play for Barbados Tridents in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League in July despite an assertion that he will look to reduce his workload after the World T20. Faf du Plessis (St Kitts and Nevis Patriots), Martin Guptill (Guyana Amazon Warriors), Brendon McCullum (Trinbago Knight Riders), Kumar Sangakkara (Jamaica Tallawahs) and Shane Watson (Zouks) were the other five “marquee” players to be drafted on Thursday.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots – Faf du Plessis
Guyana Amazon Warriors – Martin Guptill
Trinbago Knight Riders – Brendon McCullum
Jamaica Tallawahs – Kumar Sangakkara
Zouks – Shane Watson

In a statement from the franchise, de Villiers confirmed he will not miss any South Africa matches even if there is a clash and that he had turned down offers to play in the Big Bash League for exactly that reason.”I’ve had a careful look at my schedule and am looking forward to the next few months. For players in my position, it is important to find a balance between playing international cricket and participating in the various T20 leagues around the world,” de Villiers said.”I remain absolutely committed to international cricket but, this year, it just so happens I can play in the CPL as well; in contrast, for example, I have declined offers to play in the Big Bash League in Australia because it clashes with our home series against Sri Lanka.”During the ongoing series against England, in which de Villiers was made Test captain, he dominated headlines with talk of managing the amount of cricket he played. De Villiers stressed the importance of international cricket while also explaining the financial value of playing in T20 leagues around the world. The declining South African Rand has made it even more lucrative for players from the country to earn in foreign currency.South Africa have sparse winter fixtures this year, which include a tri-series in the West Indies that also features Australia. This will not clash with the CPL and the two home Tests against New Zealand in August.

Haroon Lorgat new CSA chief

Haroon Lorgat, the former ICC CEO, has been appointed Cricket South Africa’s CEO

Haroon Lorgat timeline

  • 1978-1991 – An allrounder with Eastern Province and Transvaal. Scores 2,813 runs and takes 191 wickets in 76 first-class games

  • 1999 – Named on the United Cricket Board of South Africa’s finance committee

  • 2000 – Named on the ICC’s 2003 World Cup finance committee

  • 2001 – Appointed selector by South Africa

  • 2003 – Treasurer of Cricket South Africa

  • 2004 – Chairman of South Africa’s selectors

  • 2008 – Appointed the ICC’s chief executive

  • 2012 – Named special advisor by Sri Lanka Cricket, and invited to advise the PCB on setting up a T20 league

  • 2013 – Takes over as CSA’s CEO

Haroon Lorgat, the former ICC CEO, has been appointed Cricket South Africa’s new chief executive. The position has been vacant since October last year, when Gerald Majola was fired in the aftermath of the bonus-payments scandal.”Mr Lorgat’s appointment follows a thorough and rigorous process to fill this important position,” CSA president Chris Nenzani said. “The quality of the candidates was exceptional and I would like to express my appreciation to the sub-committee of the board as well as my colleagues on the board who have brought this matter to a highly satisfactory conclusion.”Although CSA refused to confirm the other candidates, Lorgat is believed to have seen off challenges from at least three other hopefuls. They included former football head, Bheki Shongwe, who was the managing director of Kaizer Chiefs, Murphy Morobe, who is in charge of Kagiso media and Denver Hendricks, a director at the University of Pretoria.Of the names on the shortlist, Lorgat was the only one with extensive experience in cricket administration. He was previously a treasurer of CSA and convenor of selectors, and he spent four years as CEO of the ICC.It was in the last of those roles that Lorgat is believed to have bumped heads with the most powerful body in cricket, the BCCI. They are thought to have clashed over the Future Tours Programme, the DRS and an ICC independent governance review. The BCCI expressed their unhappiness at Lorgat’s possible appointment as early as March, when CSA drew up their initial shortlist. At the time, lead independent director on CSA’s board Norman Arendse confirmed that the BCCI had raised concerns over Lorgat. “We said to them we had embarked on a process and that it would be a premature to discuss him or the outcome of that process because we are waiting for it to be concluded,” Arendse said.CSA had also heard that the BCCI were considering pulling out of the upcoming tour should Lorgat be appointed. CSA proceeded to lengthen the process of appointing a new CEO, widened the net and allowed for more applicants to put their names forward.Lorgat, who remained interested in the job, provided the board restructured as they were instructed to by a ministerial investigation into the bonus-payments affair, was also on the list the second time around. Before interviews could be conducted, the fixtures for an India tour comprising of two T20s, seven ODIs and three Tests were released by CSA. The BCCI stated their objection to the schedule but there has been no official news of a bid to boycott the tour. ESPNcricinfo understands the two boards are in discussions over whether to tweak the itinerary and CSA do not foresee any problems with India’s visit.Lorgat and his fellow applicants presented to CSA’s board today and Lorgat was appointed immediately. A date has not been released for Lorgat to officially take up office, but he is believed to be available immediately. That would mean acting CEO Naasei Appiah will vacate the post as soon as next week.

Early collapse condemns Surrey

Nottinghamshire ended Surrey’s unbeaten run in the Clydesdale Bank 40 by winning a one-sided contest at Guildford with 57 balls and five wickets to spare

Nottinghamshire ended Surrey’s unbeaten run in the Clydesdale Bank 40 by winning a one-sided contest at Guildford with 57 balls and five wickets to spare. With Harry Gurney taking 4 for 22 and Darren Pattinson 3 for 27, the Nottinghamshire required just 124 for victory, which was never seriously in doubt after James Taylor – who made an unbeaten 41 off 57 balls – and Samit Patel had seized the initiative with a third-wicket stand of 57 in 14 overs.Having elected to bat on the same pitch as the one that yielded over 900 runs for the loss of 12 wickets in the County Championship, Surrey slumped to 8 for 5 before recovering to make 123, their lowest total in one-day cricket for seven years. The hosts lost Jason Roy to the third ball of the match, leg before to Patel, Steven Davies to the ninth, caught at first slip off Pattinson, and Gary Wilson to the 10th, caught behind. With Zander de Bruyn falling to an excellent head-high catch at second slip by Adam Voges and Rory Burns toe-ending a drive off Pattinson to mid-on, the home side were in deep trouble. But thanks to Matthew Spriegel, who countered with 39 off 76 balls, Surrey eventually found their feet. Spriegel steered Harry Gurney down to the third-man boundary to ironic cheers, before clipping Pattinson through square leg for four. But 10 overs later, Zafar Ansari lofted Jake Ball to Riki Wessels, who held on to a tumbling catch running back from mid-off to make it 46 for 6. Spriegel was joined by Gareth Batty and together they added 43 in 11 overs. Batty despatched Patel to the rope at long-on and cover drove Steven Mullaney for four. But Surrey were pegged back further when Gurney picked up three wickets in eight deliveries. Batty, attempting to force the former Leicestershire man off the back foot, was caught behind for 24.Spriegel, shaping to cut, had his off stump pushed back. Lewis edged behind and Michael Lumb drew a line under the Surrey innings when held on to a sharp chance at short fine leg off Ball.In reply, Nottinghamshire lost Lumb to a run out, when Lewis pounced on Hales’s defensive push to backward point off Spriegel. Three overs later, Alex Hales collected two successive fours off Stuart Meaker, only to depart a couple of balls later to a lofted catch at deep square leg.Taylor cut a no-ball from Meaker for four before lifting the free hit back over the bowler’s head. But shortly after despatching Batty to the rope at extra cover, Patel was caught at slip off Kartik. With just 29 needed off 100 balls the writing was on the wall, notwithstanding the loss of Voges, who was caught behind looking to launch Kartik into the car park at the Railway End. Having just been dropped at short mid-off, the gloss was taken off the Nottinghamshire’s victory when Wessels then fell to a leading edge off Batty.

Rampaul happy with 'ideal start'

Ravi Rampaul, the West Indies seamer, kept up his strong form with a three-wicket haul that gave the home team the advantage against Pakistan in St Kitts

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2011Ravi Rampaul, the West Indies seamer, kept up his strong form with a three-wicket haul that gave the home team the advantage against Pakistan in St Kitts. Rampaul collected seven wickets in the first Test and by stumps on the opening day of the second Test, he had 3 for 40 and had given West Indies an encouraging start as they aim to take the series 2-0.Rampaul picked up his three wickets early and had Pakistan at 24 for 3, although by the close of play the visitors had steadied somewhat at 180 for 6. It was the perfect start for West Indies after Pakistan’s captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, won the toss and chose to bat at Warner Park, a ground at which teams have scored 500-plus in the first innings of both its previous Tests.”The pitch here is usually ideal for the batsmen,” Rampaul said. “In past matches it has always been a batting track, but it had in some extra moisture in the morning and I was able to get the ball to bounce and carry. I knew I had to use whatever little advantage we had and I decided to exploit it and I got the result we were looking for as a team.”It was the ideal start. We knew from the start it was going to be a good pitch for batting but in the back of my mind I was thinking maybe we could get them for something in the region of 250.”West Indies will begin the second day searching for the remaining four wickets to keep on top of Pakistan, and Rampaul will be hoping for his first five-wicket haul in a Test match.”We are on our way to that score (less than 250) and we believe we could be able to finish off the job on Saturday,” Rampaul said. “We have confidence and we are playing good cricket as a team. I’m very happy with the way I’m bowling. Everything felt right and I will be looking to finish off the work tomorrow.”

Teenage Roy stuns Kent with century

Surrey’s teenage batsman Jason Roy hit the first Twenty20 hundred by a Lions batsman since the short-form format started eight seasons ago to ease his side to a 38-run win over lacklustre Kent.

23-Jun-2010

ScorecardSurrey’s teenage batsman Jason Roy hit the first Twenty20 hundred by a Lions batsman since the short-form format started eight seasons ago to ease his side to a 38-run win over lacklustre Kent.In a one-sided Friends Provident t20 derby at Beckenham, Surrey cantered to 201 for four – one more than they posted at the Oval against Hampshire 24 hours earlier – courtesy of an unbeaten 101 by 19-year-old Roy. A tight bowling display coupled with athletic fielding then restricted the hosts to 183 for eight, allowing Surrey to rack-up their fifth win from nine outings, while inflicting a sixth defeat in eight for the troubled Spitfires.Batting first having won the toss, resurgent Surrey lost their skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown for six in the third over when he miscued a straight drive into the hands of mid-wicket. Thereafter Roy and Steven Davies laid solid foundations for the visitors with a second-wicket stand worth 78 in nine overs. Davies, backing away to leg to make room for his expansive drives over the off-side field, hit 42 from 28 balls with five fours and a six.The left-hander’s stay ended when he chipped to deep mid-wicket. Younus Khan was next man out for eight when he drove straight to long-off to bring together Roy and the man they nickname ‘Roy’, Australian Andrew Symonds, for a sublime fourth-wicket stand of 63 in five overs.Though muscular and hard-hitting himself, there were times when former Kent all-rounder Symonds could only watch and admire the clean hitting of former Whitgift School prodigy, Roy. Hitting with immense power off front and back foot, he cleared the ropes five times and plundered 11 boundaries to coast to a 56-ball hundred in only his third Twenty20 game and the sixth limited-overs game of his career.Though Symonds skied a return catch to Matt Coles to go for 31from only 16 balls, Roy saw it through to the final over to ink his name into the Surrey record books. Kent’s response started dismally when both Rob Key and Geraint Jones nicked loose drives to keeper Davies, Chris Tremlett accounting for both men.Darren Stevens, Kent’s form player so far this term, reached seven before he thumped a back-foot force into the hands of Chris Schofield in the covers. Azhar Mahmood then fell for 34, skying to the same fielder as Symonds moved toward a haul of five for 18 against his former side.Though Martin van Jaarsveld moved to a swift half-century – and ultimately to 82 from 49 balls – the asking rate soared beyond 18 moving into the final five overs. Unsurprisingly that target proved well beyond the compass of the misfiring Spitfires.

BCCI AGM: Finding Jay Shah's replacement as secretary on members' minds

V Chamundeswarnath nominated by Indian Cricketers Association as player representative on IPL governing council

PTI29-Sep-2024Members present at the BCCI’s 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Bengaluru on Sunday requested incumbent secretary Jay Shah to speed up the process of finding his successor to make the transition as smooth as possible. Shah is expected to step down from his post in the last week of November to take over as chairman of the ICC for a three-year period from December 1.While selecting the new secretary was not on the AGM agenda, it has been learnt that the attendees discussed the succession plan among themselves.”It was a normal request to keep all due processes in place at the earliest as [then] there will be clarity for us,” a state association representative who attended the AGM told PTI.As things stand, Rohan Jaitley, president of Delhi and District Cricket Association, BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar, joint-secretary Devajit Saikia and Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel are in the mix to succeed Shah. The primary focal point of the AGM was the nomination of India’s two representatives to attend ICC meetings. Currently Shah is the BCCI’s representative on the ICC Board and IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has the same role in the Chief Executives’ Committee. The AGM entrusted the general body members with recommending two names for the posts at the earliest.Arun Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya were also elected to the IPL Governing Council (GC) as general body representatives, with the former set to continue as the league’s chairman till at least IPL 2025.Former Andhra cricketer V Chamundeswarnath was nominated by the Indian Cricketers Association (ICA) as a player representative and was inducted into the IPL GC.The AGM also ratified the annual budget for the 2024-25 season, and the members unanimously resolved to maintain BCCI’s legal status as a society, an item which was originally not on the agenda of the meeting. “The members further resolved that the tournaments of the BCCI, including the IPL, shall not be converted into a company,” a BCCI statement said.

Afghanistan to host Pakistan for three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka

“Playing Pakistan, in Sri Lanka, will help our squad further prepare for the Asia Cup,” the ACB chairman said

Danyal Rasool31-Jul-2023Just before the Asia Cup, Afghanistan will host Pakistan for a series of three ODIs across five days in Sri Lanka. The first two games will be played in Hambantota on August 22 and 24, with the third taking place in Colombo on August 26.Both sides will travel to Pakistan after the series, with the Asia Cup opener in Multan between Pakistan and Nepal taking place on August 30.”Our previous ODI assignment was a 2-1 series victory in our away tour to Bangladesh, which has boosted the team’s morale for the Pakistan series,” Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman Mirwais Ashraf said. “We are satisfied with our preparations for the Asia Cup as we have featured in multiple ODI commitments in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh recently, and playing Pakistan, in Sri Lanka, will help our squad read the conditions and further prepare for the event.”Afghanistan were the official hosts when the two sides played a three-match T20I series in Sharjah in March, which Afghanistan won 2-1. Pakistan have never lost an ODI to Afghanistan, winning all four they have played to date.Pakistan completed a two-Test series in Sri Lanka last week. A number of players, including captain Babar Azam, have remained in Sri Lanka to take part in the Lankan Premier League, which began on July 30 and ends on August 20.

Aussies abroad: Labuschagne, Renshaw and Harris make their mark

Tim David was finally recalled by Mumbai Indians but it was a largely quiet week for those in the IPL

County cricket
The world’s No.1 ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne returned to his run-making best for Glamorgan with scores of 130 and 85 in a cracking division two clash against Derbyshire. Labuschagne’s century in the first innings helped edge Glamorgan to a lead but he made a sensational near run-a-ball 85 in the second as Glamorgan fell just 21 runs short of chasing 331 in 55 overs on the final day. They held on for a draw. Michael Neser took 4 for 63 in the first innings at Derby.Matt Renshaw made a statement for Somerset scoring 129 in their innings rout of Warwickshire at Taunton. The left-hander was the only player in the match to pass 71 as he set up Somerset’s match-winning score of 458. It was Renshaw’s 14th first-class century and his first as an opener since his last century for Somerset at Taunton back in 2018. Australia’s chair of selectors George Bailey took notice of his return to form at the top of the order after he was named in the Australia A squad to tour Sri Lanka.Related

Not to be outdone, Marcus Harris produced his second century of the English summer in a run-feast against Surrey at Bristol. After Surrey piled up 603, Harris made 124 in reply for Gloucestershire sharing in a 296-run opening stand with Chris Dent. Harris has scores of 136, 67 and 124 in his first three county matches of the season, although his first two performances came on far tougher surfaces, as Gloucestershire and Surrey scored 1046 runs in three days for just 12 wickets in the draw before rain washed out the final day.Mitchell Marsh lofts one over the off side•BCCI

IPL
It wasn’t a great week for the Australians at the IPL with very few outstanding performances. Mitchell Marsh produced his best score of the tournament to-date after an interrupted start due to injury and Covid-19. He looked in superb touch as he smashed 37 off 20 balls on Sunday for Delhi Capitals against Lucknow Super Giants. He feasted on Jason Holder and Dushmantha Chameera with three cracking sixes but fell to the spin of Krishnappa Gowtham as Capitals fell short in the chase. David Warner missed out making just 3 while Marcus Stoinis made 17 not out of 16 deliveries in a far from fluent display. He struck a boundary first ball and a six off his penultimate delivery but scored just seven runs off the bat from the other 14 balls he faced and was dropped at deep midwicket. Stoinis managed just 1 off four balls in his previous outing against Punjab Kings.Warner’s low score was his first in six matches after smashing 42 off 26 balls with eight boundaries in Capitals’ win over Kolkata Knight Riders last week. Marsh made 13 off seven in the same game but Aaron Finch, on return from a shoulder issue, missed out for KKR, clean bowled for 3 off seven trying to launch one across the line.Tim David was finally picked for Mumbai Indians, having been left out of the previous six games, and delivered with a match-winning 20 not out from nine balls to guide Mumbai home to their first win of the tournament over Rajasthan Royals. He struck two fours and a six and was out there with Daniel Sams as he hit the winning six in the final over. Sams took 1 for 32 from his four overs with the ball. Riley Meredith also bowled superbly taking 2 for 24 from his four overs to help restrict Royals to just 158 for 6.Glenn Maxwell produced a special cameo for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Gujurat Titans cruising to 33 from 18 balls. He launched Mohammed Shami over square leg twice for six and then switch-hit Rashid Khan for four over cover, with the ball landing just short of the rope. He then sliced a Lockie Ferguson yorker over backward point for four but fell trying to go again in the 19th over. However, RCB were unable to defend 170 with Josh Hazlewood delivering a rare expensive spell giving up 36 runs in 3.3 overs without a wicket. This came after he took 2 for 19 against Royals last week including the prized scalp of Jos Buttler in a wicket-maiden. But RCB failed to chase 145 with Maxwell falling for a first-ball duck.Did you see?
Pat Cummins has been running the drinks in KKR’s last two matches. He was left out of the loss to Gujarat Titans last week with suggestions he was being rested due a niggle. But he was not selected for KKR’s clash against Delhi with Tim Southee preferred after Cummins had been too expensive with the ball in his first four games of the tournament. He is also going to be rested from Australia’s T20I series on the multi-format tour of Sri Lanka in June.Injuries
Finch did have a shoulder issue that had forced him out of KKR’s line-up last week for one match after making a half-century against Royals. But he recovered quickly to take his place in the side against Capitals and there are no concerns long-term.Matt Renshaw set up the innings with a hundred•Getty Images

Performance of the week
Renshaw’s century for Somerset was the standout performance of the week, in both the context of the game and of his career. He was the only player in the match to pass 71 making 129 in a game where only four other half-centuries were scored across three innings. But it was significant in that it was only his third innings back opening the batting having spent the past two years batting at Nos. 3-5 after he was dropped from Queensland’s Sheffield Shield team back in 2019 and took a break from cricket. With a Test hundred under his belt in 2017 as an opener, and Australia’s current opening pair of Warner and Usman Khawaja both set to turn 36 this year, the 26-year-old is returning to his best at the right time.
