Bangladesh hopes to be ready for 2014 World T20

The 2014 World Twenty20 will be Bangladesh’s most challenging hosting assignment. Nothing but the best hospitality will be expected, and whoever is in charge will have to plan well and more importantly plan early

Mohammad Isam08-Oct-2012On July 1, 2010 the ICC announced the names of two countries that would host the 2012 and 2014 World Twenty20s; it hardly created a ripple in either one of them. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were busy preparing for the next event on the horizon, the 2011 World Cup, while it was also in the middle of the football World Cup, not many Bangladeshis would have noticed it. But two years on from the announcement, with both having co-hosted the 50-over tournament, one of them has just completed the enormous task of hosting a global event solely. Bangladesh will host a bigger event, but as they have shown in 1998, 2004 and 2011, infrastructural limitations have been trumped by an abundance of hospitality and fervour. The 2014 World Twenty20 is likely to be held in March and April of that year, a largely dry weather period towards the end of the winter with spring taking over, as opposed to the constant threat of rain during the 20-day event in Sri Lanka. It is also a time for celebrations in the country, starting from Independence Day to the Bengali New Year’s Day in mid-April.The number of participating teams in the men’s event has been increased to 16 (the number for the women remains unchanged) and the tournament is likely to host a minimum of 60 competitive men’s and women’s matches. Forty-four such games were held in four venues in Sri Lanka with 16 practice matches – played at club grounds in Colombo – included. In Bangladesh, however there isn’t the luxury of excellent facilities in smaller venues which could host practice sessions, let alone practice matches. Instead, stadiums will have to cater to every team’s needs. The Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka hosted the 2011 World Cup opening ceremony•AFPThe Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium has the facilities to host three teams’ training sessions at a time while those in Fatullah, Chittagong, Khulna and Sylhet have been earmarked for the 2014 event. Drainage facilities are being constructed in Fatullah and Chittagong while the grounds in Khulna and Sylhet are ready to use. Khulna still awaits an ICC inspection to be cleared for the West Indies tour as it replaces Chittagong for the season, while Sylhet has hosted England A earlier this year. The real test for cities other than Dhaka is the quality and quantity of accommodation it can provide to the teams, match officials, broadcasters, journalists, volunteers and fans. “From an organisation perspective, the biggest challenge is to accommodate the teams in terms of hotels and practice facilities,” says BCB media manager Rabeed Imam. “When it comes to Bangladesh, and it has happened in 1998 and 2004, it somehow all comes together at the right time. If you tell me to pinpoint, it won’t be possible to say what’s ready. This problem isn’t faced in other countries.

The real test for cities other than Dhaka is the quality and quantity of accommodation it can provide to the teams, match officials, broadcasters, journalists, volunteers and fans

“The World Twenty20s have a very packed schedule and ever since the 2007 tournament, the schedule has gotten shorter. It has been squeezed. The biggest challenge is to arrange all these things in such a short time. The existing facilities will have to be upgraded or created, that’s another challenge.”Bangladesh have already hosted a 16-team international competition when they hosted the 2004 Under-19 World Cup, 54 matches played in eight venues though the vast majority of domestic cricket was postponed that season. Six years earlier, before it had become a Test-playing nation, Bangladesh hosted the 1998 Wills International Cup (later day Champions Trophy) which was a knockout competition held solely at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) in Dhaka. The 2011 World Cup is perhaps the nearest model for what is to be expected in 2014. Seven tournament matches and four practice matches were held in Dhaka, Chittagong and Fatullah, as well as the opening ceremony held at the BNS. The organisers can expect a lot more pressure on their ability to coordinate all aspects of a tournament of such scale.A competition such as the World Twenty20, especially since it has to be spread out across the country, will leave a legacy for the game in Bangladesh. One look at Mirpur, where the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium is located, says much about the improvement in amenities and roads in the area. Because of the 2011 tournament, the locality received a facelift it needed for decades. However, it is hard to tell who will be in charge of the Bangladesh Cricket Board in 2014, though an election is supposed to take place later this year.Nothing but the best hospitality will be expected, and whoever is in charge will have to plan well and more importantly plan early. The passion is ever-present, as organisers like Imam have found out over the years. Bangladeshis are keen to prove their worth, whether it is the government or at the private level or the public in general.

Order, order (but it's only a game)

Picking cricket’s 100 all-time greats might be an excruciating business, but it is also a lot of fun

Stephen Fay08-Aug-2009Christopher Martin-Jenkins’ introduction to the latest list of the top 100 cricketers is apologetic. He names all 129 candidates he has left out and observes that being a selector is an invitation to be ridiculed, a bit like being a politician or going out to face Dennis Lillee (ranked 19th) on a drying pitch in Melbourne in 1977. On the contrary. Cricket’s list-makers are blessed because they give us a game to play when it is raining and on winter nights when it seems as if summer will never come. Each selection is accompanied by a 500-word essay and these are best when CMJ injects a personal note, as with Maurice Tate. (The author’s PE teacher came into the school dormitory after bedtime to speak in hushed tones about the great man after he died.)The list gives us a snapshot of the rise and fall of the historical reputations of cricketers, and the good news is that five of CMJ’s top 15 have played in the 21st century. Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan are still active. The other three were members of the great Australian steamroller – Shane Warne, highest placed at No. 4, Adam Gilchrist (10) and Glenn McGrath (13).Compare that with the similar list compiled in 1998 by CMJ’s predecessor as cricket correspondent of the , John
Woodcock, who elected only two active players into the top 15 – Warne, even then, at No. 13, and Ian Botham, still a vivid memory, at No. 9. Sir Ian drops to 18 in CMJ’s book, the same position he occupies in a list drawn up in 2006 by the Australian sportswriter Geoff Armstrong, and well down from No. 6 in the 1999 effort by Nick Brownlee.Woodcock, aka the Sage of Longparish, was particularly sageist in his selection of a 19th-century stalwart, Alfred Mynn, as high as fourth, along with Hambledon cricketers such as Billy Beldham and John Small. CMJ’s earliest entries are Australian fast
bowlers: the Demon Spofforth and CTB Turner. Within his 100 are 24 Australians, 33 English players and 15 West Indians. A third of his selections captained their country. The Sage is the only one of the four selectors to place WG Grace above Don Bradman at No.1. I long for the list that finally tests to destruction the assumption of Grace’s superiority over, say, Arthur Shrewsbury. Grace averaged 32.29 in Tests compared with 35.47 for Shrewsbury. But are not Jack Hobbs (CMJ’s No. 5) and Wally Hammond (8) better cricketers than Grace? And why, apart from the lingering power of the Victorian publicity machine, does CB Fry appear in these lists at all (80 for CMJ, 54 for the Sage and 45 for Brownlee; though Armstrong ignores him)?Only two of CMJ’s top 10 are bowlers, but his list reflects a fascination with fast bowlers, particularly when they come in pairs. We have Walsh (92) and Ambrose (51), Statham (89) and Trueman (22), Holding (85) and Marshall (11), Waqar (36) and
Wasim (34), Lindwall (31) and Miller (16). No Lillee and Thomson, however, because CMJ has no room for Thommo. No Thommo. No Alan Davidson or Mike Procter, or Joel Garner and Andy Roberts. Christopher, how could you?He confesses that he has had to leave out his own favourites, Tom Graveney, Derek Randall and Lindsay Hassett. But what the hell. It’s only a game. The Top 100 Cricketers of All Time

'It's a stupid game but I just love it' – Schutt gets ready for 200th international outing

Schutt will become just the sixth Australian woman to reach 200 internationals across formats

AAP02-Feb-2024Megan Schutt never thought she’d play one game for Australia, let alone 200.But she is revelling at the prospect of achieving the milestone when Australia host South Africa on Saturday in the opening fixture of the three-match one-day series at her beloved home ground, the Adelaide Oval.”It makes you feel a bit old, to be honest,” Schutt, the 31-year-old quick, told reporters on Friday. “Game one, I didn’t even expect to play that in my lifetime. So to get to 200 is pretty darn cool and having it at Adelaide Oval is fate in itself and extremely special.”Schutt is just the sixth Australian woman to reach 200 internationals across formats.”I love the game,” she said. “It’s a stupid game and there’s so much more failure than success but I just love it. I love the people that are involved in it, and it’s a game that keeps evolving as well. I keep striving to be better. Being a fast bowler in a batter’s game is quite tough but I kind of like the challenge.”The most rewarding part is being a bowler and having played that much cricket, there’s not many players around that have played as much cricket as I have. I guess not being an express pace bowler helps me, but [reaching 200 games] as a bowler is probably a special achievement.”Schutt, who made her international debut in an ODI in December 2012, said she would continue playing “as long as my body holds out and as long as Cricket Australia want me”.”Admittedly, it’s a bit harder to get out of bed in the mornings,” she said. “But I’ll keep pushing hard in the gym, doing what I can, and if I keep getting a contract, I will keep playing.”Schutt, who has taken 260 wickets in her 87 ODIs, 108 T20Is and four Test matches, nominated Australia’s 2020 World Cup T20 triumph as her career highlight.”I mean, 86,000 people at the MCG; I was super-sceptical that we were going to get 20,000,” she said. “That was a real life-changing moment for me and something I’ll always remember. If I had to bank one moment in my life, it’s probably that.”

Auction trends: Is there a need for speed in the IPL?

Four factors that could influence how the franchises spend their cash at the 2018 IPL player auction

Gaurav Sundararaman24-Jan-2018Are really fast bowlers worth the big bucks?
IPL teams often splurge on a bowler who is capable of consistently hitting speeds in excess of 140kph. But are such express bowlers really effective in Indian conditions? Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Chris Morris, Mitchell Starc – who had one good season – and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was effective largely only in Kolkata last season, none of the others have made an impact consistently. Bowlers like Adam Milne, Tymal Mills, Matt Henry, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Kyle Abbott, Kane Richardson, Mitchell Johnson, Sean Abbott, Varun Aaron and Chris Woakes – to make several – have failed to justify their high prices.Eden Gardens is the only pace-friendly venue in the IPL at the moment, so while it might make sense for Kolkata Knight Riders to invest in speed for their home games, the other franchises might do well to exercise restraint while bidding on high-speed bowlers. They could be purchased for smaller amounts and played largely in the few games when conditions call for the extra yard of pace. Shorter boundaries, batting-friendly pitches, bigger bats and night games have them rarer in the IPL.About half of IPL’s most consistent batsmen over the past three seasons have been retained by their franchises•ESPNcricinfo LtdSecond-season syndrome
Do you remember Swapnil Asnodkar, Paul Valthaty, Ashok Menaria and Sudeep Tyagi? They had one really good IPL season, and no others. One-season wonders are fairly common in the IPL and the challenge for the teams is to not get carried away by them in the auction. Historically, only a few players do well across two or three IPL seasons. Hardik Pandya had a great 2015 but a woeful 2016, and came back strongly in 2017. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer had a good 2015 and a poor 2016.Over the previous three IPLs, only ten international batsmen – AB de Villiers, Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Brendon McCullum, David Warner, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina – have scored in excess of 300 runs each season at a healthy average and strike rate. Similarly, only eight bowlers – Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dwayne Bravo, Axar Patel, Chris Morris, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma and Yuzvendra Chahal) have been among the top wicket-takers list across all three seasons with good economy rates and strike rates. And though the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Washington Sundar and Ben Stokes did extremely well in 2017, history says that they might be hard pressed to have it as good in 2018. The franchises might want to watch out for that.Left-arm quicks have proven to be effective strike bowlers, but ill-suited to control the run flow in the IPL•ESPNcricinfo LtdLeft is right
Why did Tymal Mills get such a high bid – sold for $1.8 million – in the 2017 auction? Supply and demand. There aren’t that many left-arm quicks around internationally, and far fewer in Indian domestic cricket. Having a left-arm seamer who can swing the ball adds variety to the attack, especially because most Indian batsmen would not have faced too many quality left-armers in domestic cricket. As a result, these bowlers go for more money than others. Starc, McClenaghan and Mustafizur Rahman are some overseas success stories, while Ashish Nehra, Jaydev Unadkat and S Aravind have done well among the Indians.Data reveals that these fast bowlers are better used as wicket-taking options early on than to contain. Most left-arm pacers over the last three seasons have good strike-rates but only five have an economy below eight per over. Trent Boult, Mills, Mitchell Johnson and McClenaghan went for a lot of runs, while Aniket Choudhry, T Natarajan, RP Singh and Pradeep Sangwan failed. Franchises need to mindful of picking bowlers who are capable of providing the team with early breakthroughs, or at the back end with their variations.ESPNcricinfo LtdOverseas spinners
Unless they are Sunil Narine or Rashid Khan, overseas spinners have not had a major impact in the IPL. Only a handful have had match-winning performances in the league – a specialist overseas spinner has been Man of the Match in only 14 IPL matches. Narine won six of those awards, Shane Warne four, and Rashid Khan twice in his maiden season, which is a special performance.Apart from Imran Tahir – briefly in 2017 – no other overseas spinner has made any sort of impact consistently over the last few seasons. The likes of Adam Zampa, Ish Sodhi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Samuel Badree and Akila Dhananjaya are perhaps best suited as back-ups, rather than a first-choice overseas player. Franchises could choose to spend more prudently on overseas spinners, and pick up domestic spinners to do the job.

City finished fourth in the Women's Super League in 2024/25 but parted company with Gareth Taylor in March after a poor run of form. Former boss Nick Cushing was appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season. Despite these difficulties, Jeglertz said he was not planning to "change the world", rather he would be "continuing the job that has been done and taking it to the next level."

WHAT JEGLERTZ SAID

Jeglertz said: "[I have] a lot of feelings. Mostly maybe honoured to be part of this big and great club but also excited to get started. I’m really looking forward to it.

"The Club is one of the biggest in the world. But also, the way Therese [Sjogran] and Charlotte [O’Neill] are presenting the club, what does it stand for, what do you want from a coach and everything that’s connected to football.

"But there are a lot of things around the Club that makes me excited about the job."

He added: "One of my key things is to come in and not try to change the world. It’s about continuing the job that’s been done and taking it to the next level.

"I’m excited to work with the people. Working with people who have the same motivation and ambitions as I have.

"And that is young players, but also older players. I think all female players in general are interested in becoming better and trying to find the next step.

"That of course excites me and also challenges me, because I need to find different ways and different players.

"And that’s definitely an interesting job I have."

Celtic star who "raises the bar" has become the club's new Aiden McGeady

Celtic are on the other side of the last international break of the 2024/25 campaign and this means that there are only a couple of months left to go before the end of the season.

Whilst the Hoops will have their focus set on winning the Scottish Premiership and securing the SFA Cup, to complete a domestic treble, they will also have one eye on the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Hoops may be concerned about the future of some of their star players amid reported interest from elsewhere ahead of the summer, with Nicolas Kuhn one of those reportedly in the crosshairs of other teams.

Last month, it was reported that Premier League side Newcastle United are interested in a deal to sign the German forward from Celtic, who are said to value him at around £20m.

Kuhn, who has – as shown above – showcased his quality in the Champions League this season, would be far from the first winger to be sold for big money by the Bhoys.

Where Kuhn would rank in Celtic's most valuable winger sales

The Scottish giants have a long history of cashing in on their star players, in every position over the years, as they have allowed the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Fraser Forster, Moussa Dembele, Odsonne Edouard, and countless others, to move on from Parkhead to further their respective careers.

Kuhn, though, would be one of their most expensive sales out of all of the wingers they have cashed in on if he moves for £20m or more in the upcoming summer window, placing him just below Jota.

However, these fees do not account for the inflation of transfer fees in football over the years. As per Totally Money, a transfer fee of £10.8m in 2010 would be worth around £29.7m in today’s money.

This suggests that McGeady, who was sold to Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2010, is the most valuable sale on that list with a modern-day valuation of almost £30m.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The now-retired Ireland international was a terrific, long-serving, winger for the Hoops and they raked in a significant sum of money, for the time of the sale, when they sold him to the Russian side for £10m.

Why Aidan McGeady was such a valuable player

The Scottish-born star came up through the academy system at Parkhead and burst onto the scene as a promising young player in the 2003/04 campaign, scoring one goal in four league matches.

McGeady went on to score 36 goals and provide 48 assists in 233 appearances for Celtic in all competitions, including seven goals and 14 assists in his last league season before his big-money move to Spartak Moscow.

Former Celtic forward Aiden McGeady.

The Ireland international put on a show for Hoops supporters when he went out onto the field at Parkhead, due to his incredible technical ability and creative genius.

Such was the level of his skill, McGeady even had a signature trick that was named after him, as shown in the clip below, which speaks to just how inventive he was with the ball at his feet.

Typically operating on the left flank, the flair forward was equally capable of delivering quality with either foot, dribbling past players, scoring goals, and providing assists, whilst often cutting in on his right foot from the left wing.

In the present day, Celtic have unearthed their latest version of McGeady and it is not Kuhn, despite his potential big-money move away from Parkhead. It is Portuguese forward Jota, who has already sealed a big transfer away from Parkhead in his career.

Why Jota is Celtic's new McGeady

Jota, as aforementioned, was sold to Al Ittihad for a record fee for a Hoops winger back in the summer of 2023, after his first spell as a player in Glasgow under Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou.

As you can see in the graphic above, the Portugal international delivered brilliant performances on the flank as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the Scottish giants.

That earned him a move to Saudi Arabia for a huge fee at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, but he returned to Parkhead 18 months later when Brendan Rodgers snapped him up from Rennes in January.

The Northern Irish boss brought the 25-year-old forward back to Celtic and it has been a masterstroke so far, with the winger registering his latest goal contribution against Rangers last time out with a great assist for Daizen Maeda.

Jota has scored three goals, created three ‘big chances’, and registered two assists in seven appearances, including four starts, in the Premiership since his January switch.

This shows that he has hit the ground running at Parkhead as both a scorer and a creator of goals, as McGeady was at Celtic, in his second spell in Glasgow.

As you can see in the table above, Jota has completed 11 dribbles in just five starts across the Champions League and the Premiership for Celtic this season, which illustrates both his desire and ability to take defenders on and get supporters off their feet.

Like McGeady, the Portuguese speedster constantly looks to progress attacks by using his technical and dribbling skills to get his team up the pitch, whilst being a right-footed player on the left flank – as opposed to Kuhn being a left-footer on the right.

Pundit Michael Stewart claimed that Jota “raises the bar” for the Bhoys because he is a “game-changer” with his ability to take multiple players on at once.

Therefore, Rodgers – even though it is the player’s second spell at the club – has unearthed Celtic’s new version of McGeady by bringing Jota back to Parkhead, and he will be hoping that the Hoops continue to benefit from his attacking talent for many more years to come.

Kuhn may well move on from the club this summer, amid Newcastle’s reported interest in him, but they would still have Jota and his terrific output in the final third to rely upon next season.
