The reason Emile Smith Rowe’s Arsenal career could be over after 6-0 win

Another Premier League away day and another emphatic victory for Arsenal.

The Gunners have quickly turned into one of, if not the most threatening teams in England this year, and the hammering of Sheffield United was just another example of that.

With the game out of sight by the end of the first half, Mikel Arteta was able to make some changes to his side, and when the full-time whistle was blown, there were five substitutes on the pitch, although notably, Emile Smith Rowe wasn't among them.

Emile Smith Rowe's Arsenal career in numbers

It wasn't the first time that the Croydon-born gem has been overlooked by his manager this season, and it certainly feels a far cry from just a couple of years ago when the Spaniard referred to the Hale End graduate as a "key player" at the club.

Since making his full debut for the club in a League Cup match vs Brentford in September 2018, Smith Rowe has endured a journey full of ups and downs at the Emirates.

For example, in the 2020/21 season, he made 33 appearances for the first team, scored four goals, provided seven assists, and established himself as one of the few bright spots in a team embarking on a tumultuous rebuild.

The mercurial midfielder did even better the following season, scoring 11 goals, providing two assists and forming a joyful partnership with fellow Hale Ender Bukayo Saka.

However, while the "outstanding" youngster, as described by former professional Paul Robinson, looked set to lead Arsenal into a glorious future, he was suffering from consistent injuries which would eventually make it nearly impossible to maintain a place in a team that, through intelligent recruitment, began to improve dramatically.

Across his career thus far, the 23-year-old has suffered nine injuries, missed 77 games for club and country and spent 384 days sidelined.

If the Gunners were still fighting it out in mid-table, then Arteta might feel more comfortable throwing in an academy gem who has amassed just 552 minutes of first-team football since the start of last season.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

However, with the title race in full swing, his next start looks miles off, especially after another technically gifted player was picked ahead of him on the bench vs Sheffield United.

Why Arsenal's 6-0 win is bad news for Smith Rowe

Yes, the player in question is Portuguese 23-year-old Fabio Vieira, who replaced the talismanic Saka at half-time on Monday night.

While right-wing is not a position played by Smith Rowe, the fact that Arteta chose to bring on a player in Vieira who had just 245 minutes of experience in that position while leaving the Englishman on the bench says a lot.

The score was 5-0 at the time and, barring a dramatic collapse by the Gunners, the likes of which the league hasn't seen before, the game was effectively over and, as such, there was no reason why Smith Rowe couldn't get a runout alongside Vieira in the second half.

Moreover, choosing to bring on the "exceptional" midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, to replace the team's most important player also suggests that there is a level of trust between the Santa Maria da Feira-born ace and Arteta that just isn't there with Smith Rowe at the moment.

When fit, Saka is always going to start on the right. So, while using the former Porto ace as a substitute for the 22-year-old could be an interesting way to change the team's attacking makeup and to rest the young Englishman, it might also indicate a growing importance in the team for Vieira.

After all, in his final season with the Dragões, the 5 foot 7 wizard, who Kulig described as having "a left foot made of gold", scored seven goals and provided 16 assists in just 39 appearances, primarily from attacking midfield, which is exactly where Smith Rowe wants to operate in the long term.

Ultimately, there is still a talented player in the Hale End graduate, and were it not for his myriad of injuries that took him out of the side just as the team started to seriously improve, he might still be an essential player for Arteta.

However, with Vieira slowly playing more of a role within the team and being picked ahead of him on Monday night, his time in red and white could be up.

Sheffield Wednesday gifted injury boost for Danny Röhl’s “man mountain”

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a much-needed injury boost regarding a player who has been called a "man mountain", following an update from reliable journalist Alex Miller.

Sheffield Wednesday injury news

The Owls are right in the thick of a Championship relegation battle, with last Friday's 2-0 win at home to Birmingham City a massive result in their quest to avoid the drop.

While results and performances have too often been lacking this season – things have improved a lot since Danny Rohl replaced Xiscvo Munoz, in fairness – injuries have also held Wednesday back, having to make do without key man in various positions.

Dominic Iorfa has been a loss at the back, the likes of Barry Bannan and Will Vaulks have been unavailable in the middle of the park – George Byers has moved on, too – and there have also been fitness issues for Josh Windass in attack.

Wednesday are now heading into the business end of the season, knowing that further improvements are needed to avoid relegation back to League One, and they have been handed a big boost.

Dominic Iorfa return update

Taking to X, Miller claimed that Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa is back in training and should return to play a key role in the Owls' relegation battle at some point soon.

"Good news from the Middlewood Road treatment room, where one of the Owls' longer-term absentees is back in training ahead of schedule and could deliver a boost heading into the business end of the season."

Miller goes into a little more detail in his report for The Sheffield Star, saying that a March return date still looks possible for the centre-back: "Initial indications were that Iorfa would only be able to return to training in March and while that may still be the case when it comes to match action should Wednesday choose to take a very slow-and-steady approach, there are high hopes he'll be ready to play a part in the final weeks end of the season after he was included in their EFL registration list last week."

This is brilliant news for Wednesday, considering what a stalwart Iorfa has been for an extended period of time, arguably proving to be one of their standout defenders over the last four or five years. The 28-year-old has now made 152 appearances for the club, and played a big role in his side earning promotion last term, starting 30 matches in League One.

He has been described as "man mountain" by Bannan, highlighting how much he is valued by his teammates, and his return could be key to his team remaining in the Championship.

Admittedly, Iorfa will likely take time to find his best form initially, so Rohl may have to be careful easing him back in, but his experience could really come to the fore when Wednesday need him the most.

Chelsea eyeing move for Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes in unexpected twist

With the January transfer window well underway, Chelsea are back in the headlines and seeking further reinforcements in an attempt to stop the rot under Mauricio Pochettino in the Premier League. Now, according to reports, the Blues could swoop in and take full advantage of Newcastle United's need to sell players before landing incomings of their own.

Chelsea transfer news

Whilst Chelsea are yet to welcome any reinforcements this month, reports have linked them with moves for Ivan Toney, Etevao Willian and Evan Ferguson in deals that would hand Pochettino a much-needed attacking boost. If they manage to strengthen their frontline this month, Chelsea could yet turn their attention to landing arguably their best deal yet in the summer transfer window, taking full advantage of Newcastle's current situation.

According to reports in Spain, in an unexpected transfer twist, Chelsea are eyeing a move for Bruno Guimaraes, who reportedly has a release clause of €115m (£99m) at St James' Park. The London club are joined in their interest by Liverpool and could face a battle to land the Brazilian.

Newcastle, of course, would like to keep Guimaraes in an ideal world, but 'the club is forced to consider selling players'. The Magpies reportedly recorded losses of £73m last season and now need to sell players in order to stay within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

The sale of Guimaraes would go a long way in allowing Newcastle to welcome further arrivals and avoid any consequences for their hefty losses. And with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Liverpool and Chelsea reportedly interested, the midfielder is certainly going to be one to watch, especially during the summer transfer window.

"Magnificent" Guimaraes could be Chelsea's best midfielder

If Chelsea managed to land Guimaraes, he could instantly become one of Pochettino's best options at the heart of his midfield. The Newcastle star has played a vital part in the Magpies' recent rise, as they qualified for the Champions League and reached the Carabao Cup final last season. Now, he could have a similar opportunity to take Chelsea back among England's best sides. Here's how Guimaraes' stats compare to the current options at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe would undoubtedly prefer to keep hold of Guimaraes, handing the midfielder plenty of praise in his first season at the club. Howe said:

"Yes, they love him and rightly so after today’s performance. He was magnificent in every discipline of the game. I think the biggest compliment I could give him is that on 95 minutes, with tired legs, for sure, for him – he’s getting used to the Premier League – but he’s managed to get himself in the box to score that header.”

In what could be Todd Boehly's smartest move yet, Chelsea could once again steal the headlines in the summer by securing Guimaraes' signature from Newcastle.

Clement could land his next Sterling as Rangers eye £33k-p/w dynamo

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly in the market to add a full-back to their playing squad before the end of the January transfer window, which opened for business over two weeks ago.

Rangers' search for a full-back

According to the Daily Mail, the Light Blues are one of a number of clubs showing an interest in versatile West Ham United defender Ben Johnson.

The report claims that Leeds United are keen on the young full-back, whilst Premier League side Sheffield United and Rangers are both monitoring his situation.

It states that the English dynamo has turned down his club's attempts to tie him down to a new deal and the Hammers are now looking to rake in a fee to sell him permanently this month before his contract expires in the summer.

Philippe Clement could now land his next Dujon Sterling by securing a deal to sign Johnson, as the England U21 international is another dynamic defender who can play in a multitude of roles.

Sterling's progression under Clement

The 24-year-old arrived from Chelsea as a right-back under Michael Beale last summer but has now emerged as an option for the new head coach in central midfield.

Of his five starts for the Scottish giants this season, he has started three times in the middle of the park and caught the eye with his impressive displays.

As you can see in the table above, Clement trusted Sterling to play in midfield against Celtic last month and the English gem produced an excellent display as he showcased his reliability in possession and his terrific defensive qualities off the ball.

The stats that show why Johnson could be Sterling 2.0

Johnson could be the next version of the ex-Chelsea prospect at Ibrox as he is a full-back by trade but also has the ability to play in midfield.

He has played the majority of his career matches as either a left-back or a right-back – like Sterling prior to his move to Scotland – and has featured as a central or defensive midfielder seven times.

This suggests that the West Ham dynamo is comfortable coming into central areas and could, if Clement opted to deploy this tactic, invert into midfield in possession when starting as a right or left-back to give Rangers added control in the middle of the park.

Ben Johnson West Ham

The £33k-per-week ace, who coach Stuart Pearce described as "wonderful" to deal with, showcased his quality on and off the ball during his team's winning Europa Conference League run last season.

Johnson started six games in the competition and averaged 2.9 tackles and interceptions to go along with a duel success rate of 64%, which shows that opposition players found it difficult to get the better of him in physical contests.

He also ranked within the top 28% of his positional peers for progressive passes (4.11) per 90 and the top 23% for progressive carries (1.03) per 90, which shows that the young gem likes to progress the ball forward through passes and carries to push his team up the pitch.

Therefore, Johnson could either be deployed across the defence, on either flank or at the heart of the backline, and use his skills in and out of possession to be a solid operator, or Clement could make him his next Sterling by seeing if his impressive qualities can make him an effective central or defensive midfielder.

Ten Hag can forget about Varane with Man Utd swoop for £78m titan

The January transfer window officially opened for business on Monday and Manchester United could dip into the market to bolster their squad this month.

Erik ten Hag could need to add to his options at the heart of his defence amid growing uncertainty surrounding the future of Raphael Varane.

The Daily Mail recently claimed that the club have decided not to activate the 12-month extension clause in his £340k-per-week contract, which means that the centre-back is due to leave on a free transfer in the summer.

Man Utd ready to accept bid for "outstanding" ace who faced Nottingham Forest

Sir Jim Ratcliffe isn’t hanging around.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 31, 2023

He is now free to speak with foreign teams to put pen to paper on a pre-contract deal ahead of an exit from Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Ten Hag could forget all about Varane by securing a deal for Leny Yoro, who is a reported target for the club and available for a fee of €90m (£78m).

Varane's season in numbers

The 30-year-old enforcer has featured in 11 Premier League matches so far this season for United and started alongside Jonny Evans in the recent 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Ten Hag's side have only kept two clean sheets in those 11 games and Varane has not been an outstanding contributor for the team from a defensive perspective.

The former Real Madrid star has averaged 0.7 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game in the top-flight, which places him 18th and seventh within the United squad respectively and this shows that he is not one of the top-performing defenders at the club.

He has also made 3.9 ball recoveries per match and won 69% of his individual duels, which shows that opposition players have found it difficult to get the better of him in physical contests.

United and ten Hag have seemingly decided that his performances have not been good enough to warrant a contract extension, and they could now forget about him by swooping for another player in his position.

Leny Yoro's season in numbers

Yoro has established himself as a regular starter for Lille in Ligue 1 with 16 appearances and 15 starts during the 2023/24 campaign to date.

His emergence in the first-team for the French side is an incredible achievement when you consider that he only turned 18 in November 2023.

The impressive teenager, who talent scout Jacek Kulig described as "world-class material", is a staggering 12 years younger than Varane but has outperformed him so far this term.

Yoro has averaged 1.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 for Lille, which is almost twice as many per match as the United dud. He has also made 4.2 ball recoveries per outing for the French side.

Despite his inexperience and young age, the 18-year-old has won an impressive 67% of his duels throughout the top-flight campaign so far.

These statistics suggest that Yoro has the quality to win possession and cut out opposition attacks far more frequently than Varane, whilst being able to dominate attackers with similar effectiveness.

At the age of 18, the French titan could arrive as a fantastic signing for United in the short-term, given his superior statistics in comparison to his compatriot, whilst also being a terrific long-term addition with the potential to improve and develop over the years to come.

Therefore, ten Hag can forget all about Varane and focus on the future of his defence by securing a deal for the £78m-rated colossus.

'Leave with his head held high' – Real Madrid-bound Kylian Mbappe labelled PSG's greatest ever player as Thierry Henry insists he shouldn't be judged on Champions League failure

Thierry Henry says Kylian Mbappe is Paris Saint-Germain's greatest ever player and that he should leave the club with his "head held high".

PSG knocked out of Champions LeagueMbappe set for summer transfer exitHenry insists UCL failure shouldn't tarnish his legacyWHAT HAPPENED?

PSG lost 2-0 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday, ending Mbappe's hopes of winning the competition with the French giants. The 25-year-old looks set to join Real Madrid this summer and despite failing to win the Champions League during his six years at the French club, Arsenal legend Henry believes he is PSG's best player ever and insists his positive legacy is intact.

AdvertisementWHAT THIERRY HENRY SAID

Henry said on CBS Sports: "Kylian Mbappe, we all know he is leaving. He was magnificent for PSG. You [Mbappe] can leave this club with your head held really high. It's not everyone that can win everywhere, especially the Champions League. But the big man played really well all his career for PSG so I am not going to judge him personally on not winning the Champions League."

When asked if he considers Mbappe to be PSG's greatest ever player, Henry added: "It's not even a discussion. The impact he had all over the world, what he has been doing; for me, yes. He will go down as the best player for PSG."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe has won more than a dozen domestic trophies since signing for PSG in 2018 but his side fell short every time in their bid to win the Champions League. If the French World Cup winner does depart Parc des Princes this summer as expected, he will have scored 255 goals in 306 games and helped the team to unprecedented success. And according to Henry, those feats will not be forgotten.

Dyche can ease £55k-p/w blow by unleashing Everton’s £16m gem

Everton could secure their third straight Premier League victory by defeating Chelsea at Goodison Park this afternoon, and it would represent the perfect week for Sean Dyche.

The 3-0 win over Newcastle United in midweek proved that the Toffees don’t want to be anywhere near a relegation battle, and it was a wonderful performance.

The Blues are certainly there for the taking too, as they have won just once in their previous five league matches and Dyche will be hoping for a repeat performance from the win over the Magpies.

Everton team news

Speaking to the press before the Chelsea tie, Dyche gave an update on several players – most notably Seamus Coleman.

The experienced stalwart was substituted in midweek after suffering a foot injury in what was his first start in seven months.

Dyche said: “We’ll check on Seamus tomorrow. He has a minor situation, we think, which is unfortunate but that can happen. He has been out a long time. It's great to have him back, he wore the armband with pride like he does.”

The £55k-per-week defender was making his 353rd appearance in the Premier League for the Toffees – a club record.

Dyche may choose not to risk him against the Stamford Bridge side this afternoon, therefore, opening the door for Nathan Patterson to be unleashed in the starting XI.

Nathan Patterson’s season in numbers

The Scot joined Everton in January 2022 from Glasgow Rangers for £16m and while it took him a while to hit the ground running, this season has seen some consistent progress.

Patterson made 19 league appearances during the whole of the 2022/23 season, but he looks set to eclipse that this term as he is currently sitting on 13 appearances, having missed just two matches.

nathan-patterson-everton-sean-dyche-premier-league-james-garner-england

The former Ibrox gem has taken advantage of Coleman’s injury woes and established himself as the main choice at right back and the 22-year-old has even chipped in with a couple of assists this term, showcasing his attacking abilities.

Hailed as a “diamond” by former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy in 2022, the more Patterson plays, the better he will become and Dyche is clearly realising this.

Everton could unleash Young in new role by starting £73k-p/w "warrior"

Everton could have a new role for Young by starting £73k-per-week “warrior” over Jack Harrison.

ByAdam Scully Dec 7, 2023

The defender currently ranks second in the squad for assists (two) in the top flight this season, while also ranking seventh for accurate long balls per game (1.3) and in the top ten for tackles (1.5) and interceptions (0.5) per game, indicating that he has been a solid performer for the club.

It remains to be seen how long the Irish defender will be out for, yet with games coming thick and fast over the festive period, Dyche won't be risking any player who isn’t quite 100%, especially Coleman.

This will give Patterson the chance to continue improving and demonstrating his worth to the former Burnley manager.

A tie against Chelsea today will be an ideal opportunity for the Scottish right-back to further showcase his skills on the right side of the defence and if he plays like he has done so far this term, Dyche will have nothing to worry about.
