Two centuries coming, says Dottin after explosive five-for

Most players don’t like to reveal individual goals. It puts too much on the line, raises expectations and lays a marker; anything short of reaching it can too conveniently be deemed as ‘failure’.But Deandra Dottin is refreshingly upfront, if economical with words. So, still sporting the sweat that bore witness to her career- and tournament-best figures of 5 for 5 against Bangladesh, she chuckled and calmly revealed she plans to score two centuries during this tournament, to add to the brace already in her locker. Not one, but two.”I have two more coming for sure,” she told reporters. Two more coming for this tournament? “Yes, please.”Dottin was the first woman to score a T20 international century, against South Africa during the 2010 edition of the World T20. She did it in just 38 balls. It wasn’t just a lightbulb moment for the women’s game, it was a supernova: Oh guess what? Women can play a power game. And while many were – rightly – in raptures over Harmanpreet Kaur’s brilliant century in India’s opening match against New Zealand, it’s worth remembering that Dottin reached that milestone in 11 fewer balls. On a marathon first day of the WT20 that started with the blinding batting of Kaur, it was Dottin’s bowling that provided the fireworks at night to go with the drum beats that rumbled around Providence. In a way that reflected the conditions and the reality of playing three international T20s on one pitch, batting became progressively difficult during the day as the pitch wore and the humidity and lights became factors.Deandra Dottin’s juggling act after an impressive show with the ball•International Cricket Council

But Dottin’s performance was as much about using her natural abilities as it was about exploiting the conditions. After Bangladesh’s bowlers had restricted the defending champions to 106, there was little room for error in the West Indies bowling attack.Dottin had been promoted to open the batting – reflecting West Indies recent sluggishness in the Powerplay – but she became Jahanara Alam’s second victim when she misjudged a cut shot and was well caught by a diving Fahima Khatun. She decided to use that as motivation; if she could no longer win the match with the bat then she could still do it with the ball. The allrounder has a relatively short run-up that belies the power she generates; she was regularly touching 75 miles per hour on a pitch that was at its most sluggish.”We’ve been working a lot on sprinting and moving fast, running between the wickets and stuff, our turns and those quick steps,” Dottin said. “But for me, I’ve been putting in a lot of extra work, doing a lot of running and a lot more sprints.”I think it’s having a big input on my bowling, as well.”Dottin beat the Bangladesh batsmen for pace and fooled them with subtle movement; four of her five wickets came from the ball clattering into the stumps. The Bangladesh batsmen, sometimes lacking in foot movement and defensive technique, had no answers. She has two main expressions: one, a glowering frown of a glare, was evident when she was out for just eight runs. The other, a joyful and gleaming metallic grin burst through a little brighter with each of her wickets. When she took her fifth, she broke out into a dance with her team-mates, “Just a crazy dance that we all made up off of a song called ‘Level Up,’ she explained after the match. To what extent Dottin will continue to level up in this tournament remains to be seen. She has already bowled what she regards the best T20I spell of her extensive career (only two players in this competition – Jennie Gunn and Suzie Bates – have played more matches).”Well, I rate this one as one of the top performances I’ve had,” said Dottin. “Most of the performances I’ve had in the past were with the bat, but coming through with the ball is very tremendous.”And, if Dottin ticks off her goal of notching two centuries in the next couple of weeks, it won’t be just a level up but an unprecedented level unlocked.

'Amateurish' domestic structures hindering growth of women's cricket, states FICA global survey

The rapid growth in the profile of women’s international cricket is being undermined by continuing “amateurish” standards, particularly at domestic level, according to the findings of a global survey conducted by FICA, the players’ association. The FICA Women’s Global Employment Market Report and Survey 2018 is the first study of its kind since female players were formally brought under the auspices of FICA in 2016. In a 60-page document released this week, it outlines 20 key findings into the health of the game, as determined from interviews with players from the ICC’s 12 Full Member nations. The overwhelming conclusion of the report is that the game is “moving forward in a positive way”, with 89% of the 124 players surveyed, including 76 current internationals, stating that they were optimistic about the future of women’s cricket. However, the report also found that gender inequity was the biggest barrier to the game’s long-term future, with opportunities for participation still limited in many countries, as well as a continuing inequality of pay when compared to their male counterparts.”There has been a dynamic shift in the world, where businesses and sports are increasingly seeing the importance of equality,” Lisa Sthalekar, the former Australia allrounder and current FICA Board Member, states in the report. “Cricket is no different, with a watershed moment occurring in July 2017, when the ICC Women’s World Cup final was sold out at Lord’s.”That tournament, won by England in a thrilling final against India, transformed the profile of the sport and propelled many of its biggest names into a limelight that had never previously fallen on women’s cricket. However, the challenge of bridging that gap between the game’s possibilities and its current realities remains significant. The report states that the sport’s growth is currently being hampered by “the pervading culture of insecurity” that exists within the women’s game, and calls for minimum standards to be enforced in terms of playing opportunities and pathways, employment contracts, travel and accommodation.FICA’s research found that the global number of fully professional female players is currently “no more than 120”, adding that at present only Australia, with the Women’s Big Bash League, and increasingly England, through the advent of the Kia Super League, are in a position to offer professional cricket as a genuine career choice for women. As a consequence, the report states that “these two are pulling away from the rest of the countries”.Furthermore, four of the ICC’s 12 Full Member nations – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan – were unable to provide sufficient information to offer a “realistic and balanced assessment” of the health of the women’s game in their countries.”Whilst the report recognises the great strides of the women’s game both on and off the field, there is still plenty of work to be done,” Sthalekar said. “Complacency is not an option if the game is to realise its potential and recalibrate the scales of equality in cricket.”

Man City's 115 charges latest: Fresh evidence set to emerge which could have huge implications for Premier League side

Manchester City's impending trial over their 115 Financial Fair Play (FFP) charges may be affected by new information involving the club's sponsors.

City face 115 FFP chargesEtihad Airways to be floated on stock exchangeFull access to accounts suggests no wrongdoing WHAT HAPPENED?

The 2023 Treble-winners face allegations over breaching FFP in multiple instances, with Etihad Airways thought to play a huge role in said breaches. German outlet (via ) has claimed that the Emirati airline paid just £8 million ($10.1m) of their £67.5m ($85.3m) obligation to City, with the rest made up by disguised equity funding from the club's owners. However, the recent decision to float Etihad Airways on the stock exchange, per , may suggest these claims are not true.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

According to reports in the Middle East cited in 's report, the airline's decision to be floated on the stock exchange would require an Initial Public Offering. This would involve Etihad allowing full disclosure of their accounts, including all financial affairs and corporate practices. Stock market insiders believe that this unrestricted access would not be provided if Etihad – and by extension, City's owners – had anything to hide. In other words, if fraud had been committed, as has been suggested.

WHAT WAS SAID

A senior figure in the banking industry is quoted in 's article as saying: "If it came to light that Etihad executives were indeed involved in manipulating the sponsorship deal with City, it could cause serious damage to the company’s reputation in the eyes of potential investors. Etihad would also have an obligation to disclose any ongoing investigation into the company’s accounts or conduct before the IPO was launched.

"What the Premier League are alleging is extremely serious, not just in terms of football’s rules and regulations. The accusation is that City executives have colluded with officials from Etihad and have lied not only to the club’s independent auditors but to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“By extension, that also calls into question what information was disclosed by City’s owners to Silverlake before the American private equity firm bought a significant stake in the club in 2019. That’s why the Premier League’s allegations go way beyond accusing City of failing to meet Profit and Sustainability Rules.”

The Premier League champions continue to maintain their innocence and they will feel this evidence will have major implications in them beating the 115 charges to their name. An approximate hearing date for the trial into City's alleged wrongdoings was set for late autumn of this year, at the earliest.

Watch out Porro: Spurs eyeing move for £9m-rated "warrior" who ruined Rashford

It's fair to say Tottenham Hotspur had an up-and-down transfer window this summer, the exit of Spurs legend Harry Kane a bitter pill to swallow but an expected departure all the same – their synonymous club icon leaving for pastures new in Germany with Bayern Munich.

But, with new head coach Ange Postecoglou at the helm, there's a new lease of life running through Tottenham's veins helped by bringing exciting additions into the building that have helped Spurs' fans mend their broken hearts surrounding Kane leaving.

James Maddison has been the pick of the bunch arguably from the fresh blood added to Spurs in the off-season, already notching up three goals and five assists for his new employers in ten matches after leaving recently relegated Leicester City.

Other stars include Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie, both technically on the books at Tottenham last campaign but they feel like new additions to the group with how their importance has been amplified in Postecoglou's new-look side – Udogie even winning senior Italy caps off the back of his two assists in the Premier League to date.

Even with Tottenham's electric start to this top-flight campaign – Spurs currently occupying top spot in the division – Postecoglou has an exciting talent firmly in his sights in Sacha Boey with this potential transfer in January likely making Porro sweat about his cemented spot in the team.

Are Tottenham interested in Sacha Boey?

Known to English football fans for his recent exploits versus Manchester United in the Champions League, the Galatasaray full-back has no doubt caught the attention of late, with Tottenham one of many clubs now seemingly in for the 23-year-old.

According to reports in Turkey, Spurs are after the French right-back, with the potential for club scouts to go out to Istanbul and keep close tabs on the expansive defender in the weeks to come.

Valued at just £9m, according to CIES Football Observatory, and praised for his "warrior" like attributes per Turkish football journalist Kaya Temel, he could be a real steal for the north Londoners.

How has Sacha Boey performed this season?

Boey has been everpresent for his current employers this season, not missing a single minute of football in any competition remarkably.

The attack-minded full-back comically nutmegged Marcus Rashford in Galatasaray's memorable 3-2 win at Old Trafford, with journalist Furkan Bozoglu writing that the defender had "made fun of Rashford" with that moment of genius.

It wasn't just that moment alone that saw Boey catch the eye, however, as the 5 foot 10 ace also provided two key passes and won eight total duels up against the United winger, with the latter man ultimately being withdrawn after 68 minutes after failing to get the better of the Tottenham target.

The former Rennes ace had performed even better in the Turkish side's first Group A contest versus FC Copenhagen – scoring in the 86th minute at Rams Park to kickstart a similar comeback, the current Süper Lig champions drawing 2-2 with a leveller at the death after Boey's goal.

In his last 30 domestic games, the France U21 international has averaged a commendable 7.18 average match rating, as per Sofascore – his highest rating so far this season coming against İstanbulspor, Boey winning six of his ten ground duels as his team narrowly won 1-0.

The Montreuil native could give Tottenham some added grit and determination if Postecoglou was to bring him into the squad he's forming at Spurs.

On top of that, he could be another expansive, direct wing-back who can contribute going forward – with the arrival of such a promising talent likely to be a cause for concern for that man Porro, who currently resides in the right-back berth at N17.

Tottenham would also be an attractive club for Boey to join right now if he were to relocate from Turkey, the new-look Spurs are currently in their groove, top of the Premier League table and winning plaudits for fast-paced, fun-to-watch football week in, week out

CRB ACHA GOL NO SEGUNDO TEMPO

Everton: Latest Jarrad Branthwaite injury update

Everton face a daunting Premier League assignment against Arsenal this weekend, but they have received a much-needed injury boost before the game.

Who is injured for Everton currently?

The Blues return to domestic action on Sunday international, following two weeks without a game because of international football getting in the way.

It has been a grim start to the season for Sean Dyche's side, with just one point picked up from four league games, and things don't get any easier for them on Sunday afternoon, as Arsenal make the trip to Goodison Park.

The Gunners arguably look like Manchester City's biggest rivals in the title race, as Mikel Arteta continues to build an impressive team, so Everton will clearly have their work cut out when it comes to trying to pick up a positive result.

The Blues aren't without injury problems going into the match, with Jack Harrison still missing after his loan move from Leeds United, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also out, but closing in on a return.

One positive update has emerged regarding an Everton player, however, following Dyche's press conference on Friday.

Is Jarrad Branthwaite fit to face Arsenal?

According to Liverpool World, Jarrad Branthwaite is available for selection to face Arsenal this weekend after overcoming an injury, with Dyche's quotes about other individuals also included:

"Jack Harrison is still to make his debut since signing on loan from Leeds United because of a hip injury. The winger was spotted in team training earlier this week but the game comes too soon.

"Dyche, speaking at his pre-match press conference, said: 'Dom back on the grass again and should be clear. Jack Harrison now on the grass and is feeling good. Not Jack, he’s only just out on the grass working with the team. Actually training with us, literally just days. Dom has managed to keep his fitness and will be coming back into the fold.'

"Jarrad Branthwaite dropped out of England under-20 duty with a minor groin issue but is fine to feature. Lewis Dobbin missed the 2-2 draw at Sheffield United before the international break with knocks."

This is an undoubtedly positive piece of news for Everton, ahead of a game that could see them having to defend for large periods, given the quality that Arsenal possess, whether it be Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, or others.

Branthwaite is fresh off the back of an impressive season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, where the 21-year-old made 27 appearances in the Eredivisie and three in the Europa League, not to mention being hailed as "complete" by Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Whether Dyche throws the Englishman straight into the starting lineup to face Arsenal remains to be seen, but he started alongside James Tarkowski in the 2-2 draw away to Sheffield United in Everton's last game, so it makes sense to retain him, assuming he is deemed fit enough.

The youngster will need to be at his very best, coming up against either Eddie Nketiah or Gabriel Jesus, as he looks to build on his average of two tackles and interceptions apiece per game in the Premier League this season.

Aston Villa: £50k-p/w disaster was even worse than Digne against Legia

Aston Villa suffered a shock defeat in their opening fixture in the UEFA Europa Conference League, as Unai Emery’s side fell 3-2 to Legia Warsaw in Group E at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego.

The Villans were far from at their best from the off, as the hosts went ahead after just three minutes through Pawel Wszolek.

By the time the first half came to a close, four goals had been scored, with the scoreline at the interval reading 2-2 in what was a scrappy 45 minutes of football by Villa’s standards.

Six minutes into the second half and the Midlands side were behind again, as Ernest Muci scored the goal to put his club ahead with a goal that prevailed as the match-winner.

Journalist Tom Collomosse branded Villa’s defensive display as “chaotic”, which was a fair judgement for the make-shift back line that suffered at the hands of its wide channels.

How did Lucas Digne play against Legia Warsaw?

After a number of positive performances at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, it seemed as though Lucas Digne had rediscovered his form, however tonight the Frenchman had a poor night defensively.

The left-back was at fault for the match-winner, giving the ball away to Legia’s live wire Muci who went on to bury the ball past Emi Martinez.

Luckily for the 30-year-old, the narrative of his game will be told through his exquisite volley scored to level the game at 2-2, taking away from his terrible handling of the host’s wide threat.

Digne lost possession a whopping 17 times on the night and won none of his three attempted ground duels, via Sofascore. However, he was not the only full-back that was atrocious in claret and blue.

How did Calum Chambers play against Legia Warsaw?

Described as “horrific” by journalist Josh Norris for his performance, Calum Chambers had a tough night at right-back in what was his first start of the season.

The former Arsenal man looked way off the pace of the game and was constantly caught out of position, with Norris dubbing his positional choices as “wild” as he frequently ventured aimlessly upfield.

Chambers lost possession ten times before being pulled off after 67 minutes, which was long enough for some fans who took to Twitter X to plead for the defender to be taken off at half-time.

Ending his night with zero crosses completed on the right flank, the 28-year-old was handed a brutal player rating of 4.5 by the aforementioned Collomosse, the lowest of the Villa side on what was a disappointing night on their return to Europe.

There was some surprise to see the Englishman in the starting XI prior to the match, considering he is yet to make a Premier League appearance this term, paired with the fact that he didn’t play much football at all last season either.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the £50k-per-week defender was handed just two league starts, and a total of 341 minutes throughout the entirety of the season, telling of his place in the pecking order.

It was a forgettable night for the Villans’ defence, and a time for talking for Emery who must consider alternatives to the former Arsenal dud going forward.

"Massive" – Sky pundit says underrated Arsenal star is just "so important"

Former Arsenal striker, who features regularly on Sky Sports, says one of Mikel Arteta's stars has been "quietly" doing a job recently.

Everton vs Arsenal

The Gunners, in their bid to challenge Man City for a Premier League title once again, are preparing to take on league-strugglers at Everton on Goodison Park on Sunday.

Arsenal went into the international break in fine form, while not playing at their imperious best; clinching vital victories against Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Man United.

Arteta's side were forced to show grit and determination if they were to reign victorious in these encounters, especially against Erik ten Hag's United.

Surviving an early scare with Marcus Rashford's early goal for the Red Devils, Arsenal came back to win the match 3-1 courtesy of strikes from Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus deep into added time.

"We all worked so hard and planned everything for moments like this," Arteta said after the match.

"These moments will stick with us, with the crowd so connected to the team with the big history of these matches, it's great. The will, the determination of the team, that will to win and go and go and go, I'm so proud of them.

"A team needs different tools to win football matches, and the capacity to react. We did that in the first half and that set the tone and brought some calmness to the team."

Meanwhile, Everton are enduring contrasting fortunes on Merseyside. They're yet to record a single league win so far this season, with a draw against Sheffield United and defeats to Fulham, Aston Villa and Wolves.

On paper, this really does seem like a routine win for Arsenal.

Latest Arsenal news

There are a few star players who stand out as real difference-makers, perhaps most notably the likes of Rice, Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka among others.

However, pundit Campbell says there is one man who "quietly" went about his business against United and makes a "massive" difference for Arteta's side; left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko.

oleksandr-zinchenko-arsenal-edu-arteta-benfica-live-updates-deadline-day-alexander-bah

“When [Oleksandr] Zinchenko’s not there, I think have Thomas Partey to go into midfield really did help the squad," said Campbell on the Gooners Pod this week.

“People say it didn’t work, well it did work because we won two of those games and we drew one where there’s no way we should have only got a point against Fulham.

“But as soon as Zinchenko comes back, he reverts back to Zinchenko, Gabriel [Magalhaes], [William] Saliba and Ben White, so I understand that.

“Against teams who don’t carry the same threat, I think you could mix and match a little bit more. But you could see Zinchenko makes a massive difference to us, he really does.

“And he doesn’t play as a left-back does he, he plays in midfield so again he’s a huge part of what we do and how we do it. Defensively, he’s not Kieran Tierney or even [Takehiro] Tomiyasu, but what he does bring to the table is so important for us going forward.

“Quietly, I thought he had a really good game against Manchester United.”

The Ukranian was signed from Man City in 2022, where he has gone to impress when available.

Uttar Pradesh nudge ahead after Ishant strikes

Akshdeep Nath and Rinku Singh rearguard help Uttar Pradesh stretch lead to 246 in see-saw day; Raina fails

Varun Shetty in New Delhi03-Nov-2017
ScorecardPTI

Akshdeep Nath followed up his fifty in the first innings with a century to rescue Uttar Pradesh after they had slipped and lost three wickets with only two on the board, after they pocketed a lead against Delhi. He was joined by left-hander Rinku Singh on 21 for 4 as the pair added 108 for the fifth wicket to swell UP’s lead to 246 with three wickets intact on a bizarre day at Palam grounds, where play ended after a man breached the security gates and drove on to the pitch.Delhi had begun the day on 228 for 6 in response to UP’s 291. Dhruv Shorey batting overnight on 65 did the bulk of the scoring on the morning, after Pulkit Narang was dismissed in the first over of the day. He made 33 of the 41 runs Delhi got and remained unbeaten on 98 as Imtiaz Ahmed cleaned out the tail. The medium-pacer finished with three wickets, while left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar, who had snapped three wickets yesterday, added one more to his tally.Ishant Sharma, the Delhi captain, then ripped through UP’s top order. He rattled opener Shivam Chaudhary’s stumps off the first ball of the innings. In his next over, he had first-innings top-scorer Mohammad Saif caught in the slips. Suresh Raina came in at No. 5 when Navdeep Saini dismissed Albas Shaukat in the following over. He started off aggressively but couldn’t sustain it for longer than 17 deliveries, edging behind off Ishant.Nath started watchfully in the second innings, preferring to play straight on a track that offered bounce through the day. But as the fifth-wicket pair approached tea, they opened up. Rinku Singh, who got a second innings century in his previous match, struck a breezy 64 off 80, getting his fifty before Nath. He then failed to control a cut against a rising ball.Like in the first innings, Nath took a liking to the spinners. He directed Delhi’s fields against him with compulsive use of sweeps and reverse sweeps. There were at least three appeals of lbw against him as he employed those shots, including when was on 99, but at no point did he show signs of not being in control. With Upendra Yadav, Nath put on 86. But while he was successful in staving off – and attacking – Kulwant Khejroliya’s short ball strategy, Upendra couldn’t keep a hook down in the last hour of play. Nath was unbeaten at the end of the day after swelling UP’s lead.
