"Massive" – Sky pundit says underrated Arsenal star is just "so important"

Former Arsenal striker, who features regularly on Sky Sports, says one of Mikel Arteta's stars has been "quietly" doing a job recently.

Everton vs Arsenal

The Gunners, in their bid to challenge Man City for a Premier League title once again, are preparing to take on league-strugglers at Everton on Goodison Park on Sunday.

Arsenal went into the international break in fine form, while not playing at their imperious best; clinching vital victories against Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Man United.

Arteta's side were forced to show grit and determination if they were to reign victorious in these encounters, especially against Erik ten Hag's United.

Surviving an early scare with Marcus Rashford's early goal for the Red Devils, Arsenal came back to win the match 3-1 courtesy of strikes from Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus deep into added time.

"We all worked so hard and planned everything for moments like this," Arteta said after the match.

"These moments will stick with us, with the crowd so connected to the team with the big history of these matches, it's great. The will, the determination of the team, that will to win and go and go and go, I'm so proud of them.

"A team needs different tools to win football matches, and the capacity to react. We did that in the first half and that set the tone and brought some calmness to the team."

Meanwhile, Everton are enduring contrasting fortunes on Merseyside. They're yet to record a single league win so far this season, with a draw against Sheffield United and defeats to Fulham, Aston Villa and Wolves.

On paper, this really does seem like a routine win for Arsenal.

Latest Arsenal news

There are a few star players who stand out as real difference-makers, perhaps most notably the likes of Rice, Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka among others.

However, pundit Campbell says there is one man who "quietly" went about his business against United and makes a "massive" difference for Arteta's side; left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko.

“When [Oleksandr] Zinchenko’s not there, I think have Thomas Partey to go into midfield really did help the squad," said Campbell on the Gooners Pod this week.

“People say it didn’t work, well it did work because we won two of those games and we drew one where there’s no way we should have only got a point against Fulham.

“But as soon as Zinchenko comes back, he reverts back to Zinchenko, Gabriel [Magalhaes], [William] Saliba and Ben White, so I understand that.

“Against teams who don’t carry the same threat, I think you could mix and match a little bit more. But you could see Zinchenko makes a massive difference to us, he really does.

“And he doesn’t play as a left-back does he, he plays in midfield so again he’s a huge part of what we do and how we do it. Defensively, he’s not Kieran Tierney or even [Takehiro] Tomiyasu, but what he does bring to the table is so important for us going forward.

“Quietly, I thought he had a really good game against Manchester United.”

The Ukranian was signed from Man City in 2022, where he has gone to impress when available.

Uttar Pradesh nudge ahead after Ishant strikes

Akshdeep Nath and Rinku Singh rearguard help Uttar Pradesh stretch lead to 246 in see-saw day; Raina fails

Akshdeep Nath followed up his fifty in the first innings with a century to rescue Uttar Pradesh after they had slipped and lost three wickets with only two on the board, after they pocketed a lead against Delhi. He was joined by left-hander Rinku Singh on 21 for 4 as the pair added 108 for the fifth wicket to swell UP’s lead to 246 with three wickets intact on a bizarre day at Palam grounds, where play ended after a man breached the security gates and drove on to the pitch.Delhi had begun the day on 228 for 6 in response to UP’s 291. Dhruv Shorey batting overnight on 65 did the bulk of the scoring on the morning, after Pulkit Narang was dismissed in the first over of the day. He made 33 of the 41 runs Delhi got and remained unbeaten on 98 as Imtiaz Ahmed cleaned out the tail. The medium-pacer finished with three wickets, while left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar, who had snapped three wickets yesterday, added one more to his tally.Ishant Sharma, the Delhi captain, then ripped through UP’s top order. He rattled opener Shivam Chaudhary’s stumps off the first ball of the innings. In his next over, he had first-innings top-scorer Mohammad Saif caught in the slips. Suresh Raina came in at No. 5 when Navdeep Saini dismissed Albas Shaukat in the following over. He started off aggressively but couldn’t sustain it for longer than 17 deliveries, edging behind off Ishant.Nath started watchfully in the second innings, preferring to play straight on a track that offered bounce through the day. But as the fifth-wicket pair approached tea, they opened up. Rinku Singh, who got a second innings century in his previous match, struck a breezy 64 off 80, getting his fifty before Nath. He then failed to control a cut against a rising ball.Like in the first innings, Nath took a liking to the spinners. He directed Delhi’s fields against him with compulsive use of sweeps and reverse sweeps. There were at least three appeals of lbw against him as he employed those shots, including when was on 99, but at no point did he show signs of not being in control. With Upendra Yadav, Nath put on 86. But while he was successful in staving off – and attacking – Kulwant Khejroliya’s short ball strategy, Upendra couldn’t keep a hook down in the last hour of play. Nath was unbeaten at the end of the day after swelling UP’s lead.

Spurs Enter "Crucial Week" For Transfer Of Super Star

It's going to be a "crucial week" for Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich as Harry Kane has informed them that his future must be sorted before a ball is kicked in the Premier League this weekend, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Is Harry Kane leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer?

There are usually at least a few different transfer sagas that come to dominate the summer every year in football, whether that was the Gareth Bale to Real Madrid story in 2013, David de Gea's almost move to the same club in 2015 or even Declan Rice's switch to Arsenal earlier this year, Bayern's pursuit of Kane might be the biggest for quite some time.

The German behemoths have been incredibly persistent in their pursuit of the Englishman despite the constant signals from Spurs that their talismanic striker is not for sale for anything less than £100m.

So far, the Bundesliga champions have had three formal offers rebuffed by the North Londoners. The second was said to be worth just €80m (£69m), and the most recent one significantly more at €100m (£86m), however even that was deemed to be well below what Daniel Levy and Co are after.

However, where most clubs might've already given up on securing the signature of the superstar striker, the Bavarians look like they might push ahead with at least one more bid worth £95m to test the resolve of the Tottenham hierarchy, per Sky Sports.

That said, a decision will have to be made quickly as the player has informed both sides that his future must be decided before the club's Premier League campaign gets underway against Brentford on Sunday, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

He explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"For Harry Kane crucial week in this case, this week because Harry Kane's camp communicated to both Tottenham and Bayern that they want the deal to be decided this week. Harry Kane's preference is not to leave after the first game in the Premier League this season; Tottenham play on Sunday, so the expectation is to get the deal done by Friday or Saturday; otherwise, the deal would collapse.

"That's the preference of Harry Kane communicated to both clubs, let's see what happens. Bayern had internal talks today to discuss again about the Harry Kane case, and some sources believe that they will bid again for Harry Kane, so that's the feeling internally at Bayern.

"We wait for a final confirmation but Wednesday is going to be an important day to understand whether Bayern will bid again for Kane or not. Some sources in the club believe that a new bid will be made to try one last time to sign Harry Kane, so it will depend on Bayern and on Daniel Levy absolutely, with the timing now being crucial because the player wants to make the move this week or potentially next summer, so that's the Kane position."

How old is Harry Kane?

Born July 28th 1993, in Walthamstow, England, Kane has just turned 30-years-old but has shown no signs of decline in his performances or output whatsoever, and if last year is anything to go by, he's just getting better and better.

In his 37 Premier League appearances across the 2021/22 campaign, the 6 foot 2 "monster" scored a respectable 17 goals and provided nine assists, giving him a goal contribution every 124 minutes, or once every 1.3 games, per WhoScored.

However, last season, in his 38 starts, the £200,000-a-week genius managed to score 30 goals whilst still providing two assists, meaning that he created a goal contribution every 106 minutes in the Premier League, or one every 1.18 games, also per WhoScored.

With numbers like that, it's not hard to see why the record German champions want to add the England captain to their ranks for the new season, as his presence would give them a much better chance to extend their domestic dominance onto the continental scene.

Roach working on moving the ball as he aims at Test return

Kemar Roach, who took 3 for 17 on the second day of West Indies’ three-day warm-up match against Essex, shed light on the efforts he has been taking towards a Test return ahead of the three-match series against England

Kemar Roach took further steps towards playing his first Test since January 2016, carrying over his promising domestic form into West Indies’ first warm-up match, against Essex, ahead of the three-Test series against England. Following his 3 for 17 on the second day of the thee-day warm-up fixture, Roach shed light on the efforts he has been taking towards the Test return.”I’m looking to make the ball go both ways. I always had it in me, but I need to perfect it even more and I’ve been working hard on that,” he said after a rain-hit day in Chelmsford. “Today, it was perfect. The line and length was spot on. That’s where I wanted to be. I want to keep working and building on that.”Roach is the most experienced member of the 15-man squad, having played 37 Tests since his debut in 2009. He was dropped owing to poor form at the start of 2016, but has since made strides in the Professional Cricket League, West Indies’ first-class tournament, where he took 23 wickets at 16.17 for Barbados.”It’s pretty tough to go there after almost two years off, to catch up with things. Test cricket is the biggest form of cricket, and I’ve been working hard and I want things to be right back here. So I’m going to go there, help the young guys in the team and put some good performances.”Roach is no stranger to English conditions. He played in West Indies’ previous tour of England, in 2012, and took eight wickets – the most for his team – despite playing only two of the three Tests. That apart, he has also represented Worcestershire in the County Championship.”I’ve been here previously for Test tours. I know certain grounds and how the pitches play and the atmosphere. It’s about adapting quickly. It’s not home, it’s not Barbados. It is colder here. It’s about doing the business right.”Roach also spoke positively of the format for the first of the three Tests; the match will be played under lights at Edgbaston – England’s first day-night Test. “I’ve played a couple of games with the pink ball back home during the domestic season,” he said. “I think it’s good for cricket. It does a bit more for a bowler’s likes, so that’s good for me.”It’s always a different feel, a different switch up. The atmosphere is going to be different; everything is going to be different. We’re going to pull some more crowd. It’s about time we switch things up a little bit.”

Shrubsole six-for snatches World Cup for England

A six-wicket haul from Anya Shrubsole won England their fourth World Cup after a thrilling final at Lord’s

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy23-Jul-2017A transformative World Cup for women’s cricket ended with the final it deserved. A near full-house at Lord’s, a tense finish, and every imaginable thrill and spill. In the end, of all the heroes of an overcast and occasionally drizzly day, it was Anya Shrubsole who stood tallest. With India needing 10 to win with their last pair at the crease, Shrubsole gestured to her team-mates to calm down when Jenny Gunn put down a sitter, off her bowling, at mid-off. Shrubsole had no doubt the wicket ball would come, soon, and off her own bowling. She ran in again, knocked back Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s off stump, and finished with the best ever figures in a Women’s World Cup final: 6 for 46.The experience told in the end. This was England’s fifth final. India were playing only their second; the last one had come 12 years ago.And bit by bit, India let slip a chase that was in their control for most part. A third-wicket partnership of 95 between Punam Raut and Harmanpreet Kaur had brought the equation down to 91 off 100 balls when the latter picked out deep square leg with an airborne sweep. Then, after Shrubsole’s slower offcutter sent back Raut for 86, India promoted Sushma Verma – a wicketkeeper-batsman with an average of 6.40 after 13 innings – ahead of Deepti Sharma, who has seven fifties and a 188 in ODIs.Then Veda Krishnamurthy, who had lived on the line between enterprise and recklessness in scoring 35 at over a run a ball, slogged at Shrubsole and holed out when India needed 29 off 33. The gates were wide open, and Shrubsole stormed through, yorking Jhulan Goswami two balls later to tilt the match decisively England’s way. That wicket was symbolic, one bowling hero surpassing another. Goswami, playing what was perhaps her last World Cup match, had been instrumental in restricting England to what seemed a below-par 228 for 7. Her new-ball spell – 5-2-9-0 – had kept England’s run rate in check even while their openers scored at eight an over at the other end. Her second – 5-1-14-3 – had ripped the heart out of England’s innings. When Goswami began her second spell, Sarah Taylor and Nat Sciver had put on 70 for the fourth wicket, and England, at 133 for 3 after 30 overs, may have set their sights on 270. When she ended her second spell, England were 168 for 6 after 40. Thanks to their batting depth, they continued to fight, and Katherine Brunt, Gunn and Laura Marsh scrambled 60 off the last 10 overs to set India a testing target.Anya Shrubsole took the best figures by a woman in a World Cup final•Getty ImagesShrubsole gave England their first breakthrough, nipping one back off the seam to bowl the left-handed, and thoroughly out-of-sorts, Smriti Mandhana through the gate. Then Mithali Raj came in and played two gorgeously timed square drives that suggested the pitch – which had belied its grassy look and turned out slow and decidedly low – was beginning to get easier to bat on than at any point during England’s innings. With Raut stepping out of her usual, orthodox shell and slog-sweeping the seamers three times over wide mid-on, the second-wicket partnership was growing ominous until a misjudgement aborted it at 38.It was an iffy single but Raj, running from the non-striker’s end after Raut played the ball to the right of midwicket, perhaps judged it calamitous when it was merely risky. Giving up prematurely, she slowed down and ended up yards out when a sprint and dive could have saved her.India weren’t unduly rattled. Kaur, fresh off her 171 not out in the semi-final, played herself in with unwavering straightness – refusing to close her bat-face to anything in line with the stumps – while every now and then going over mid-on or midwicket. Raut, using her feet nimbly to go forward and back, explored a wider area of the field, driving the slower bowlers inside-out and late-cutting.Even as their partnership swelled, England never made it easy. They bowled straight lines to Kaur, wary of giving her any room to free her arms, and perhaps as a consequence, only one of her 51 runs came through the off side. They kept mixing their pace, and Gunn, particularly proficient at the art, conceded only eight in her first five overs. The gap between balls remaining and runs required narrowed, and the pressure began to tell on India as soon as Kaur fell. Verma’s promotion, Krishnamurthy’s slog, and Shikha Pandey’s run-out – when she and Deepti had brought the equation down to 11 off 16 with three wickets left – were consequences of this pressure. It all added up to India losing their last seven wickets for 28 runs.

Hope occasion can give team additional motivation – Misbah

Misbah-ul-Haq, who will make his last international appearance in Roseau, admits that emotions are a given on occasions like this but is keen to remain focused on the job at hand as Pakistan seek their maiden Test series win in the Caribbean

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-20172:11

Will treat it as a normal game – Misbah

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq hopes his and Younis Khan’s impending retirement from international cricket can spur the team in its pursuit of a maiden Test series win against West Indies in the Caribbean. Both batsmen will make their last international appearance in the third Test at Roseau, and with the series tied 1-1, Misbah aims to remain focused on the demands of his role as a senior batsman amid the emotions that come with the occasion.Pakistan have drawn three of the previous seven Test series between the two countries in the West Indies, including their last two series in 2011 and 2005.”That has given us [Younis and Misbah] additional motivation and I hope that is the case with the team also,” he said. “Looking forward to it as a normal game and focusing on our jobs. As batsmen, contributions from Younis and me would be very important. Sometimes emotions can come into these sort of occasions but we will try our best to focus on our jobs.”Pakistan began the Test series well, beating the hosts by seven wickets in the first Test in Jamaica but a dramatic second-innings collapse in Barbados – Pakistan were bowled out for 81 in a chase of 188 – allowed West Indies to draw level. West Indies captain Jason Holder, stressed his side needed get over the Barbados win and play the perfect game of cricket, and highlighted that fielding remained an area West Indies needed to improve on quickly.”What’s happening in Barbados has gone already,” Holder said. “It’s important to put it behind us. We don’t have to forget the good things we have done there but we have to improve on a few areas – fielding is one, especially taking our chances and once we forget the last match as quickly as possible and move on to this, it’s better for us.”We are in a situation where we have played some good cricket in the series so far. We haven’t been perfect so we are striving to play a perfect cricket game. Once we can do that, or get to 99% of that, then we will be the better side in this game.”Looking back on the legacy he will leave behind as captain, Misbah stated that he had tried to show a young team the importance of being more disciplined and determined. Misbah took over as captain in the aftermath of the 2010 spot-fixing scandal and was proud of the manner in which the team had grown in the Test format. Under his leadership, the side briefly held the No.1 ranking in Tests last year, before poor results on the tours of New Zealand and Australia pushed them down the table.”It was a tough time, a lot of players at the time were retiring also,” Misbah said. “We had different issues with the match-fixing, etc, it was a pretty young team at the time and the way we emerged as an international team, especially in Test cricket, that was wonderful. No doubt, we are not performing like that in the last couple of series but still this team has potential. We know the way, we know the path and we have to follow that. As a senior, I have tried to show this young side the need to be more disciplined, determined and once you do that and work hard, you can achieve anything. That is what is really pleasing about this team, you are looking forward that this team can go along well.”

Manohar resigns as ICC chairman

Shashank Manohar has resigned from his post as ICC chairman after eight months in office, citing personal reasons. In a letter addressed to ICC chief executive David Richardson, Manohar said: “I have tried to do my best and have tried to be fair and impartial in deciding matters in the functioning of the Board and in matters related to Member Boards along with the able support of all Directors.”However, for personal reasons it is not possible for me to hold the august office of ICC Chairman and hence I am tendering my resignation as Chairman with immediate effect. I take this opportunity to thank all the Directors, the Management and staff of ICC for supporting me wholeheartedly. I wish ICC all the very best and hope it achieves greater heights in future.”Manohar was elected unopposed as the ICC’s first independent chairman – one not affiliated to any of its member boards – in May 2016 for a two-year term, and since then had become the driving force behind the ICC’s retreat from the governance structures created by the Big Three boards of BCCI, CA and ECB in 2014.In February this year, the ICC had passed in principle a new constitution that undid much of the imbalance in power and finances the BCCI, CA and ECB had sought to create in 2014, but a final decision was to be taken at the ICC Board’s next round of meetings in April. Manohar, however, will now not be the head of the ICC at those meetings and what impact – if any – his absence has on those proposals remains to be seen. The ICC confirmed receipt of Manohar’s resignation and said: “The ICC Board will assess the situation and next steps before making a further announcement.”When Manohar replaced N Srinivasan as BCCI president in November 2015, he also became the ICC chairman by virtue of being the head of the Indian board. Later that month, Manohar spoke out against the Big Three revamp of the ICC: “I don’t agree with the three major countries bullying the ICC,” Manohar has said. “That’s my personal view, because as I have always said, an institution is bigger than individuals.”In his dual role as BCCI president and ICC chairman, Manohar was the person behind the move to have an independent chairman head the ICC, the first step of the rollback that he would try to push through. On May 10, 2016, in the wake of the Lodha Committee’s report that recommended a severe shake up of the administrative structures of the BCCI, Mahohar quit as board president. Two days later, he was elected unopposed as the first independent chairman of the ICC.The next step for the ICC executive board will be to appoint an interim chairman, before holding elections to find a permanent candidate. They can decide to hold elections by the next round of board meetings in April, or even before that.According to the ICC constitution: “In the event that the Chairman shall, for any reason, be unable to fulfil or continue to fulfil his duties, then the Executive Board shall appoint an acting Chairman from within the Executive Board to assume such duties until the conclusion of the next Conference at which a new Chairman is elected or, if sooner, upon the existing Chairman being able to fulfil or continue to fulfil his duties.”All present and past ICC directors were eligible to contest the election at the time of Manohar’s election. Candidates could be nominated by fellow ICC directors, and only one nominee is allowed per director. Any nominee with the support of at least two Full Member directors is eligible to stand for election.

Tottenham Want "Sensational" £56m Lenglet Upgrade

Tottenham Hotspur have started the summer strongly, but to truly usher in a new age, it is their defence that must now be made a priority…

What's the latest on Pau Torres to Tottenham Hotspur?

Now, according to the Daily Mail, it seems this might well be the case. After all, they note that the club are a big admirer of Villarreal's Pau Torres.

Whilst the report notes Aston Villa as the true credible interest, with their pursuit of the Spanish stopper understandable given Unai Emery's familiarity with his game, their reluctance to pay more than £35m could allow the Lilywhites to swoop in. Especially given his release clause reportedly stands at €65m (£56m).

Having already secured a permanent deal for Dejan Kulusevski, and more recently snatched James Maddison from Leicester City, it seems that the hierarchy are prepared to back Ange Postecoglou suitably to help take them back to the top.

How good is Pau Torres?

Having been a star man for the Yellow Submarine for many years, leading to his 23 caps for Spain, the 26-year-old is vastly experienced considering he still has the bulk of his career ahead of him.

Should he choose to spend those prime years in north London, it could provide the perfect springboard for him to become a hero under the Australian tactician. Especially given he will follow Clement Lenglet as his replacement for that left-sided centre-back spot, with the bar hardly being set exceptionally high.

Having spent last term on loan at the club, the Barcelona dud could only muster a 6.65 average Sofascore rating in the Premier League, the third-lowest of anyone within the Spurs squad who started over five games. To be rated as one of the worst players in a team that truly crumbled speaks volumes for his ability to play at this level.

Meanwhile, Torres was maintaining a 7.04 average Sofascore rating in La Liga, building upon his 7.09 figure from the season prior. He has remained a consistently classy asset at the back, with his piercing left foot and powerful physique lending to his success.

clement-lenglet-tottenham-hotspur

The former rating was upheld through 4.1 clearances and 1.3 tackles per game, yet he would also maintain an 85% pass accuracy alongside a 79% dribble success rate, via Sofascore, numbers that eclipse Lenglet in some areas, with the Frenchman posting 2.6 clearances per match and completing just 64% of his dribbles.

Given how Postecoglou will likely instruct his defenders to be the first line of creativity, striding out from the back with poise and purpose to kickstart attacks, there are arguably few more suited to such a ball-playing philosophy than this 6 foot 3 titan.

To emphasise this further, when compared to other centre-backs across Europe, Torres ranks in the top 4% for progressive passes, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, via FBref.

A former coach of his, Paco Lopez, always expected great things from his pupil though, as he noted: "I have followed his career, I always had a certain weakness for him.

"I had put my confidence in him, helped him jump up through the ranks. So I was not surprised by his progress, not at all. When we played against Villarreal, I spoke with him for a good while. As always, he is a sensational kid, very humble, the same as when I had him."

Given this effusive praise can be contrasted with the claims of journalist Roy Nemer, who branded Lenglet a "defensive liability" back in 2020, such a switch marks a no-brainer for the Lilywhites who would be sealing a seismic upgrade.
