    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It was a special occasion for Reyna and Adams who had gone through a tough phase in the past 12 months. While Adams returned from a serious injury, Reyna failed to blossom at Dortmund, having scored just twice in almost a year. In the January transfer window, the attacker was sent on loan to Nottingham Forest.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Reyna now has five goal contributions in three finals for the USMNT, two more than any other player in the team's history. His impressive performance throughout the competition earned him the prestigious Golden Ball award.

Joao Cancelo shockingly claims Cristiano Ronaldo is well past his 'peak' as he insists Portugal 'do not depend entirely' on Al-Nassr striker ahead of bid for Euro 2024 glory

Portugal defender Joao Cancelo has insisted the national team are not entirely dependent on 39-year-old superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo turned 39 in FebruaryStill key for club and countryBut Cancelo says he's past his bestWHAT HAPPENED?

Ronaldo celebrated his 39th birthday in February but has shown few signs of slowing down, ending 2023 as the top male goalscorer in the world after netting 54 times. The Al-Nassr superstar will be going for glory again in the summer with Portugal at Euro 2024, although team-mate Cancelo has insisted the national team are not entirely dependent on their ageing captain.

He told Portuguese network RTP: "He is an important player and spent 15 years competing with Messi for the Ballon d’Or, but the peak of a footballer’s career is between the ages of 25 and 32. He is an important player for us, but the national team does not depend entirely on him.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo may be past his peak but he is still likely to play a leading role for Portugal at this summer's tournament in Germany. The forward outscored both Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe in qualifying, netting 10 times for Portugal as Roberto Martinez's side were the only team to finish with a 100 percent record. Yet Martinez does have a host of other quality attacking options in his squad, including Bruno Fernandes, Goncalo Ramos, Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva, and Rafael Leao.

Arsenal: Arteta now personally wants to sign £70m forward over Ivan Toney

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has now personally identified a £70 million forward as his signing preference over Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Will Arsenal sign anyone in January?

The Premier League title hopefuls, according to various reports in the last two months, have a few transfer targets in mind for the January transfer window and 2024 in general. Lesser-known names like Royal Antwerp sensation Arthur Vermeeren and Club Brugge star Andreas Skov Olsen have been linked in the past week, but Toney is a name absolutely dominating the headlines where Arsenal are concerned.

The Englishman, who scored 20 league goals prior to his gambling ban last season, looks set to be one of next year's hottest transfer commodities. Toney has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham in the past few weeks alone, with pundits like Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believing a new striker like Toney is desperately needed at the Emirates.

“I do believe that is the position that Arsenal needs to strengthen," said Parlour live on talkSPORT.

"But, it ultimately depends on player availability and financial negotiations to ensure it’s the right deal for Arsenal. Ivan Toney would be a great acquisition. Let’s wait and see how things develop.”

As well as Toney, Wolves forward Pedro Neto is another player attracting Arteta's interest, with Football Transfers now having some news on both of Arsenal's transfer targets.

Pedro Neto transfer update

Sharing a Neto transfer update, the outlet claims that Gary O'Neill's star man is actually now a preferred target of Arteta's. Indeed, it is believed that the Spaniard actually wants Arsenal to sign Neto more than Toney after being informed by club hierarchy of a limited budget. There is said to be confidence that their current crop of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah can do the job up front, with Arteta being a long-time admirer of Neto as he looks to ease the burden on Bukayo Saka out-wide.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.

The 23-year-old won't come cheap, though, as the report goes on to state that Wolves will demand close to around £70 million for him. While Arsenal believe they can do it for £40 million, that doesn't appear likely. Neto has already grabbed five assists and a goal over his first eight league games this season, rediscovering his past form after coming back from a serious injury.

Journalist Charles Watts, commenting on the links to Neto recently, claimed he would be an excellent signing for Arteta – going on to call him "electric".

“Pedro Neto is a player we know Arsenal like," said Watts on Inside Arsenal.

"They’ve followed him before. Wolves have been very adamant when Arsenal have gone knocking for Neto, they were having none of it. These stories are emerging again. He looks electric, he’s scoring goals, his pace looks spot on. He really surprised me, he looks so sharp, so quick. He’s the perfect age for Arsenal, all the talent in the world. Would I take Neto? Absolutely, he also grew up watching Arsenal, maybe that will help."

Maxwell threat adds to Royals' challenge

Big Picture

If you’ve received a pounding of the kind Rajasthan Royals did on Monday, you don’t want too much time to keep pondering over what could’ve been. Royals, in any case, don’t have time to reflect on the nine-wicket defeat because they’re back home to Jaipur, once their bastion, to face Delhi Daredevils, also smarting from a loss to Kings XI Punjab. Both sides have a similar make-up. Two batsmen who like to play anchor in Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane, and two destructive allrounders in Glenn Maxwell and Ben Stokes. They also have a plethora of spin options. Yet, the main concern will be the batting for one and bowling for the other.Royals endured a problem of plenty in their tournament opener. Having five openers in the top six didn’t help matters. While one game is too early to talk combinations, Royals will quickly need to identify who bats where. At the auction, much of their strategy seemed to suggest a replication of Rising Pune Supergiant’s formula. They will do well to implement some of it too, like slotting Rahul Tripathi back at the top of the order, where he struck 391 runs in 14 innings, including six successive 30 plus scores, at 146.44 during a breakout 2017 season.Royals aren’t the only ones with things on their plate though. Daredevils play five away games first up. Having gone down in their opener, they would have to find ways to lift themselves up soon and not get into a rut that could leave them with too much to do at home in the second half. For starters, they will need to decide how much is too much, before making changes. Colin Munro, as destructive as he can be, was all at sea against spin in Mohali. The Jaipur surface of old offered plenty of zip. Now, with the track slightly slower, there’s a case of Royals continuing to stifle him with spin. Munro, though should back himself. In the first game, he was up against R Ashwin and Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Here, he’ll possibly face K Gowtham and Shreyas Gopal, who struggled in the opener. The Daredevils spinners were also found wanting. Amit Mishra was particularly expensive. With one frontline legspinner in Rahul Tewatia to do the job, they could possibly look at fielding Shahbaz Nadeem, the left-arm spinner, who has also proved himself with the new ball in the past.As such, it’s a battle between the two batting line-ups. Who will blink first?

In the news

Daredevils will welcome the return of Glenn Maxwell. A straight swap with Dan Christian is the most-likely possibility, given they have two other seam-bowling allrounders in Vijay Shankar and Chris Morris to bank on.Given how their batting struggled, they could look at beefing up their lower order by including Stuart Binny in place of K Gowtham, who was out for zero and bowled a lone over. Binny can also chip in with the ball if needed. Jofra Archer is still recovering from a side strain and hasn’t arrived until match-eve. There are issues with some other Royals overseas recruits as well: Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera has not arrived because of a fitness concern, and Afghanistan’s Zahir Khan was replaced late by New Zealand legspinner Ish Sodhi.

The likely XIs

Rajasthan Royals: 1 D’Arcy Short, 2 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Sanju Samson, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Butler, 7 Stuart Binny 8 Shreyas Gopal, 9 Dhawal Kulkarni 10 Jaydev Unadkat, 11 Ben LaughlinDelhi Daredevils: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Rishabh Pant, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Vijay Shankar, 7 Chris Morris, 8 Rahul Tewatia 9 Shahbaz Nadeem/Amit Mishra 10 Trent Boult, 11 Mohammed ShamiESPNcricinfo Ltd

Stats that matter

  • Royals have a win-loss ratio of 2.428 is the best among all teams in the tournament’s history. They’ve won 34 out of their 49 home games.
  • Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir will be playing his 150th IPL game on Wednesday. His 36 half-centuries are the joint-most in IPL history along with David Warner. His 4188 runs in 148 innings are the most by a batsman without a century.
  • Ben Stokes and Jaydev Unadkat are two of Royals’ best bowlers in the Powerplay with a Smart Strike Rate of 6.12 and 6.39 respectively. Stokes wasn’t bowled in the first six on Monday.

Strategic punt

  • Maxwell presents a case to be promoted up the order. Far too often, teams have left him for a little too late. Given Daredevils already have Morris for death hitting, Maxwell can be considered a sound choice, perhaps even at No. 3, should Daredevils start well. His Smart Strike Rate of 190.22 between overs 7 and 15 makes him a bigger threat than Shreyas Iyer, who strikes at 154.80 in the same period.

Fantasy picks

D’Arcy Short likes pace on the ball and will be offered just that if Daredevils hand the new ball to Trent Boult and Mohammed Shami. His strong backfoot game having grown up on bouncy Australian decks could help him and Royals on a fresh Jaipur deck. If he’s already in your squad, there’s no reason to make a change just yet. Not all returns, after all, are instant.

Celtic: Hoops had a similar player to Messi, now he’s in the 3rd tier

Glasgow giants Celtic have had their fair share of producing some of the finest Scottish footballers.

You just have to look at Scotland’s recent squad to see the influence the Scottish Premiership side has had on the Tartan Army with the likes of Aaron Hickey, Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor having all previously been on the Hoops’ books.

The Bhoys’ fans are some of the most loyal set of supporters with the love and affection they show to their players is unmatched, so when an academy player is brought through Lennoxtown it makes their connection with the player so much more special.

Former Celtic player John Hartson previously stated that McGregor has “become a legend” for the Scottish giants and it looked like former academy wonderkid Karamoko Dembele was once on track to achieve the same icon status as the Hoops’ captain.

Fast forward to 2023 and the once-proclaimed “good talent” by former Celtic teammate Moussa Dembele is now looking for game time in League 1.

Who is Karamoko Dembele?

If you were an avid football fan in 2016, then Dembele was a name you would hear very frequently, especially on social media platforms.

The hype train surrounding the teenage sensation had officially left the station when media outlets noticed the then 13-year-old playing for Celtic’s under-20 side. The tiny winger going up against adults was quite the sight to see but he often came out on top.

Highlight competitions of the English-born winger lightning up opposition defenders in youth matches soon flooded YouTube as he became one of the most highly anticipated prospects in the world.

Dembele was eligible to play for England and Scotland with both nations soon fighting over the player who was described as “very similar to Lionel Messi”, according to the winger's former youth coach David Feeney.

The Celtic phenomenon controversially decided to play for England at youth level having already made appearances for the Tartan Army. An international tug-of-war began for what was thought to be for a future starter for their senior teams.

How did Dembele play at Celtic?

At the age of 13, the spotlight fell onto the Celtic wonderkid and by the time he was 16, he finally made his first team debut, coming off the bench to replace Oliver Burke during the final league match of the season in 2019.

The atmosphere around Celtic Park was electric as it was the day that the Bhoys would lift their eighth consecutive league title, one of the biggest roars that the Green Brigade produced was when Dembele was gearing up on the sidelines to show everyone what the hype was about.

Despite not being involved in any goals in the 44 minutes he played, the talented winger still showed glimpses of a future star waiting to be unearthed.

Then Celtic manager Neil Lennon said after the winger's debut that fans have just seen a “glimpse of the future”.

Lennon’s vision of the future turned out to be misjudged as Dembele played just nine more times for the Glasgow outfit over the next three seasons.

Failure to break into the first team the England youth international’s hype was fading quickly and if he was to resurrect his career to align with what pundits have previously predicted of him, then he needed to find a new home to give him more minutes.

What was Dembele’s next move?

The then 19-year-year would decide to part ways with Celtic and would swap Glasgow for the northwest of France as he put pen to paper to officially become a Stade Brest player on a four-year deal.

Upon signing for Brest, Dembele said:

"I came to Brest because I saw that the project presented by Greg Lorenzi was good. It's something that suits me and I think I can have some playing time here. It was a great opportunity that presented itself to me and it interested me.

"I'm very explosive, I like to have fun and give it to the fans. I like to score and win."

A move to the mid-table Ligue 1 outfit may not have been in the plans of Dembele.

One of football’s best up-and-coming talents was once linked to a move to Premier League giants Manchester City, and would now be playing for a side that was participating in the second division of French football four seasons prior.

Life at the Stade Francis-Le Blé was particularly successful for the £1k-per-week player as he played just 15 games (all coming from the bench) during the course of the 2022/23 season while not contributing to a single goal.

According to WhoScored, Dembele averaged a measly 0.1 dribbles and 0.2 key passes per game signifying how tough he was finding his time in France.

Why did Dembele fail to live up to the hype?

There have been countless players touted as being the next future superstar looking to conquer domestic and international football.

Like Dembele, former AC Milan prodigy Hachim Mastour and American prospect Freddy Adu were expected to become global superstars before they were even 16.

Most teenage prospects fail to live up to their hype due to a lack of dedication and professionalism but Dembele injuries hampered his momentum.

Under former manager Ange Postecoglou, the 5 foot 7 winger failed to break into the dominant Celtic starting 11 with the Hoops being stacked with options. His rivals for a position in the squad were with the likes of Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi who would end the season scoring double figures.

In a make-or-break season for Dembele, the agile forward played just one game after being ruled out for 213 days and missing 44 matches as he picked up an ankle injury.

Celtic's wingers 2021/22 stats, as per FBRef Name Games Goals Assists Karamoko Dembele 1 0 0 Jota 29 10 9 Daizen Maeda 16 6 5 Kyogo Furuhashi 20 12 0 James Forrest 19 1 2 Where is Dembele now?

Still contracted to Brest, Dembele now finds himself back in his native Britain playing for League 1 side Blackpool on loan.

The Tangerines will hope they can bounce back to the Championship following their relegation last season.

Blackpool head coach Neil Critchley has recruited some relatively young players to help him guide Blackpool to promotion – 21-year-old Jenson Weir and 23-year-old Albie Morgan are some of the more noteworthy players brought to Bloomfield Road.

Dembele has played once for the Seasiders so far this season, the former Celtic winger produced an impressive performance in his side's 2-0 victory over Barrow in the EFL Trophy at the start of the month.

However, he is yet to start in the league since making his temporary switch.

Andy Robertson and Serge Gnabry are some examples of players who were written off too early so if Dembele can make the most of his loan spell in the north west there’s still a good chance he can revitalise his career into the top player we know he can be.

SL in trouble, Mathews under injury cloud

Big picture

The securing of Chandika Hathurusingha to coach Sri Lanka was seen as a boon for an under fire cricket board, and his no-nonsense approach to training, attention to detail, and penchant for data analysis has gained him a litany of admirers. There is also the small matter of his three-year stint with Bangladesh, which saw the team achieve unprecedented success, most notably home series wins against India, Pakistan, South Africa*.In that sense, the fact that Sri Lanka go into this clash with Bangladesh – a team they have lost to rarely – as underdogs speaks both towards Hathurusingha’s credentials while at the same time providing a genuine test of his credentials. On Wednesday night, Sri Lanka’s core issues were on display for all to see; a largely impotent bowling line-up, suspect fielding, and an inconsistent middle order all came together to ensure they lost their third straight ODI to Zimbabwe. That said there were some positives, such as the form of Thisara Perera – with both bat and ball – and the devastating return to form of Kusal Perera. There was also one big negative. The captain Angelo Mathews is struggling with hamstring problems again – issues which may see him miss more than just one game. For Bangladesh, the team got the new year off to the ideal start with an efficient dispatch of Zimbabwe in the opening ODI, while Shakib Al Hasan’s excellent all-round display, and an even spread of wickets among the bowling unit will hold the team in good stead ahead of the Sri Lanka game. However, this match will definitely have more meaning than most for Bangladesh, a team certainly still smarting from Hathurusingha’s sudden departure less than two years out from a World Cup. Expect fireworks.

Form guide

Bangladesh: WLLLW
Sri Lanka: LLLWL

In the spotlight

If Kusal Perera had spent another 30 minutes at the crease on Wednesday evening, Sri Lanka would probably have beaten Zimbabwe. Instead, he got out for 80 and the rest of the batting line-up crumbled. If he gets set again against Bangladesh, Kusal would have to bat deeper into the innings. The Bangladesh top-order is a tough place to break into these days so Anamul Haque would be expected to put in a better effort in his second game back in the team after nearly three years.Sri Lanka’s head coach Chandika Hathurusingha at a practice session•Getty Images

Team news

Official word is that a decision on Mathews’ availability will be taken on the day of the game, with Niroshan Dickwella likely to replace him if he fails the fitness test. Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera are possible stand-in captains.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 4 Angelo Mathews/ Niroshan Dickwella, 5 Kusal Mendis, 6 Asela Gunaratne, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Akila Dhananjaya, 11 Dushmantha ChameeraBangladesh is unlikely to change a winning line-up.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Sabbir Rahman, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Sunzamul Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Rubel Hossain

Pitch and conditions

The good news is that the cold spell is ending in Dhaka which would mean less softness in the pitches and better batting conditions in the first half of the game.

Stats and trivia

  • Tamim Iqbal is 126 runs away from becoming the highest run-getter at a single venue. Currently Sanath Jayasuriya is on top of the list, having made 2,514 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
  • Provided he passes fit, Mathews is set to become the fourth Sri Lankan captain to complete 100 ODIs. Arjuna Ranatunga leads the list with 193 ODIs, followed by Mahela Jayawardene and Jayasuriya.

Quotes

“Bangladesh have beaten all the top teams at home in the last two years. It will be tough and challenging. We can’t play like today. We were not up to the standards today.”

“[Chandika Hathurusingha] is a very good coach, but as you saw on Monday, it is Tamim Iqbal who scores runs, Shakib Al Hasan who takes wickets. Chandika [Hathurusingha] can’t score runs or take wickets.”
*18.00 GMT The story had incorrectly stated that Bangladesh had secured a series win over England at home.

National T20 Cup semis and final on November 29 and 30

The semi-finals and final of the National T20 Cup have been rescheduled for November 29 and 30 after they were postponed by the PCB due to religious unrest in the country. The venue for the three games has not changed, with Rawalpindi playing host, just like it has for the rest of the tournament. The four remaining teams – Lahore Whites, who play Faisalabad, and FATA, who face Lahore Blues – are already in Islamabad, Rawalpindi’s sister city. The tournament had been set to conclude in the weekend, but an unrest that began when police tried to disperse a sit-in by a religious gathering at an interchange in Rawalpindi forced the PCB to postpone the event. With protests turning violent and escalating throughout the country, Islamabad had been in a state of effective lockdown over the weekend, with all roads leading to Karachi and Lahore closed off. Teams had found themselves confined to their hotels, and roads leading to the Rawalpindi stadium had also been blocked. Private news channels were taken off air for most of Saturday and Sunday, while access to social media sites Facebook, Twitter and YouTube was also suspended. All educational institutions in Lahore, which hosted the recent World XI series, as well as the third T20I against Sri Lanka, were closed on Monday, and will remain shut on Tuesday. But the situation has been defused for the most part, with life returning to some semblance of normality in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. That enables the postponed games in the National T20 Cup to be held earlier than what may have been expected on Monda or Tuesday. The decision to play these matches on Wednesday and Thursday, as opposed to the weekend, may be down to a religious holiday throughout Pakistan on Friday, with the PCB keen to avoid further hindrances to their premier domestic T20 tournament. The National T20 Cup faced several hindrances this year. Earlier, it had clashed with the ICC World XI’s trip. The rescheduled dates clashed with the Bangladesh Premier League and the now-postponed T20 Global League in South Africa. Even then, smog in Faisalabad and Multan forced a relocation to Rawalpindi once and for all.The scheduling of the National T20 Cup created uncertainty on other fronts as well. In August, the board revoked the No-Objection Certificates of 13 players participating in the Caribbean Premier League and the English domestic season, asking them to return home and fulfill national and domestic commitments. However, a few days later, PCB chairman Najam Sethi said the National T20 Cup had been postponed and the players could return to their franchises and counties after undergoing fitness tests. The tournament will also mark the end of Saeed Ajmal’s career, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Leeds Have £21k-p/w "Monster" Back "On The Radar" – Report

Leeds United have Glasgow Rangers defensive midfielder Glen Kamara back "on the radar", and a reliable journalist has delivered an update on the future of two senior players at Elland Road.

How much did Rangers pay for Glen Kamara?

Back in 2019, Rangers purchased Kamara from Dundee FC for a reported £50,000 which is an absolute bargain and it’s fair to say that they have definitely got their money’s worth with the talisman having made a total of 193 appearances since putting pen to paper.

However, the 27-year-old was extremely out of favour last season having been handed just 12 starts in the Scottish Premiership which shows not only how low down in his manager’s pecking order he is but also that he’ll have to consider a move elsewhere should he want more regular game time, and his potential availability has alerted chiefs in Yorkshire.

Read The Latest Leeds Transfer News HERE…

Football Insider previously reported that the Whites had entered talks regarding a swoop for the Finland international, before the Daily Mail’s Transfer Confidential claimed that Daniel Farke’s side were weighing up an offer, though since then, speculation has been extremely quiet from the Championship outfit's point of view.

When asked about his star potentially completing a switch to LS11 during a recent public interview, Beale responded:

“There’s nothing in that, not at this moment”, and it looks like he left the door open to a future move for a reason if the following update is to be believed.

Are Leeds signing Glen Kamara?

Taking to X, Graham Smyth revealed that Leeds have reignited their interest in Kamara, whilst also delivering a brief update on the future of two first-team players at Elland Road. He wrote:

"Leeds United still hopeful of keeping Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra, despite the weekend's events. Glen Kamara back on the radar and an offer in for a striker."

Expanding in his column for The Yorkshire Evening Post, the reporter claimed that the 49ers are once again "exploring" the possibility of a swoop, because despite Adams looking like he'd stay, Bournemouth are believed to have since triggered his £20m release clause following his collapsed move to Chelsea.

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

How many goals has Glen Kamara scored?

Since the start of his career, Kamara has posted 31 goal contributions (20 assists and 11 goals) which is the aspect of his game he’s least strong in considering that he’s a defensive midfielder, but his natural role sitting in front of the backline previously saw him dubbed a “monster” by his former manager Steven Gerrard.

The StormSportsX client, who earns £21k-per-week, last season recorded an 89.4% pass success rate which was higher than any of the regular starters managed at Leeds, displaying his calmness and composure on the ball, not to mention that he also averaged one key pass per league game.

Kamara, sponsored by Nike, has additionally been recognised for his individual efforts on the international stage having been named Finland’s Footballer of the Year for 2022, so for someone who has proved themselves for both club and country, he could be a fantastic addition for Farke, and it looks as if it will be a deal to keep an eye on before the deadline.
