Rehan Ahmed five-for on Test debut helps England to close in on 3-0 sweep

England left needing 55 to win when light intervenes after Rehan’s historic day

Matt Roller19-Dec-2022England need another 55 runs to win the third Test in Karachi and inflict Pakistan’s first-ever men’s Test series whitewash on home soil, after Rehan Ahmed became the youngest man to take a five-wicket haul on debut at 18 years and 128 days old.Rehan, who was held back until the fourth hour of the third day by Ben Stokes, titled the game back in England’s favour when he broke a determined fourth-wicket stand between Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel, then ran through the middle and lower order to finish with 5 for 48 in only his fourth first-class appearance.Related

England were set 167 to win and with a nominal 22 overs left on the third evening, they set about trying to chase the runs before the close. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett thrashed 87 runs in 11.3 overs, Rehan was promoted to No. 3 as a “night-hawk” and Stokes threw his bat towards the square leg umpire trying to heave Nauman Ali for six, but bad light intervened with 55 more runs required.Jack Leach had taken three wickets in the space of six balls in the morning session to remove Pakistan’s top order and after a long wait before returning to the attack, Rehan made a similar impact on the game in a five-over burst before the tea interval. His first wicket was a freebie, Babar pulling a drag-down straight to Ollie Pope at short midwicket after bringing up his second half-century of the match. But his next two came from good balls: the second, a legbreak that gripped and found Mohammad Rizwan’s outside edge; the third, a hard-spun googly that Shakeel top-edged straight to square leg on the sweep.Rehan returned in the evening session to polish off the lower order: Mohammad Wasim hacked him to mid-off, and Salman Ali Agha miscued a sweep to backward square leg. He sank to his knees to perform a , then beamed from ear to ear as he led the team off. His father Naeem, watching from the stands, wiped away tears as he applauded.ESPNcricinfo LtdThat led to a sprint towards the finish line, which started with Crawley skipping down and whipping the first ball through wide mid-on for four. Duckett exchanged boundaries with his opening partner as Pakistan’s shoulders slumped, and England raced to 58 for 0 after six overs.Babar turned to his seamers, who briefly slowed the scoring, seemingly ensuring that the game would go into a fourth day, but England continued to show their attacking intent. When Crawley was trapped lbw by Abrar Ahmed, Rehan strode out – having batted at No. 8 in the first innings – and flogged his first ball down the ground for four.He lost his off stump shortly after for a shot-a-ball 10 off 8 and despite Stokes’ best efforts alongside Duckett – who quietly racked up a 38-ball half-century, his fourth 50-plus score of the series – England fell just short of the finish line. They are unlikely to hang around on the fourth morning.Earlier, Shan Masood had hit the first two balls of the day for four as Pakistan looked to grow their lead, but after a positive start, lost his leg stump while bottom-edging an attempted reverse-sweep off Leach.Azhar Ali was greeted with handshakes by England’s fielders but his final innings before his retirement from international cricket was all too brief. His fourth ball was full, pitching on leg stump, but turned sharply away from the bat as he looked to whip wristily through midwicket. It crashed into the top of off stump. Azhar trudged off through a guard of honour from his team-mates.At the start of his next over, Leach struck again, trapping Shafique lbw with a ball that skidded on off the pitch. Shakeel survived the hat-trick ball, but Pakistan were effectively 4 for 3. He dug in alongside Babar either side of the lunch break for a stand eventually worth 110 – but Rehan’s introduction half an hour before tea changed the game.

Naomi Girma made her second appearance for ChelseaPlayed final 10 minutes of Champions League gameHas only managed 70 minutes since record breaking moveFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Naomi Girma made just her second appearance for Chelsea since moving from NWSL's San Diego Wave, playing the final 10 minutes of the Blues' Champions League clash with Barcelona. The USWNT star managed 10 minutes in her return, but it didn't help Chelsea's chances as the Spanish side scored twice after she entered the fray to round off a 4-1 win in the first leg of their semifinal.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Girma has struggled for fitness since moving to London. She was plagued by calf issues when Chelsea signed her for a record $1.1 million in late January, and has seldom seen the pitch since. Her only previous showing was a tidy hour in a 2-2 draw with Brighton on March 2.

DID YOU KNOW?

Girma's move to Chelsea was the most expensive transfer in women's soccer history, the WSL side becoming the first ever club to play over $1 million for a women's player.

The showing would seem to set the table for further appearances for the center back. Chelsea's next game is a WSL fixture with Crystal Palace on April 23.

Newcastle eye move for "magical" ace who’s far better than Almiron & Murphy

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United were the Premier League’s main entertainers in December, as the super-confident Magpies ended up scoring goals by the bucket load on the way to some convincing victories being picked up.

Indeed, across the entire month in all competitions, the Toon fired home a ridiculous 21 strikes, which then saw Howe’s men rise up the league standings to a pretty fifth position.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Still, there are spots in his team that the Magpies manager will want to improve during the transfer window, with concerns over depth arising down the right channel.

Newcastle considering move for "magic" attacker

As per a report by journalist Graeme Bailey, various different Premier League clubs are considering a move for Celtic ace Nicolas Kuhn this January, as the Bhoys attacker continues to tear Scottish Premiership defences to shreds.

The report states that Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace are all keen alongside Newcastle, with the Magpies in for an almighty battle to win their desired man.

But, with it looking increasingly likely that Miguel Almiron will depart St James’ Park this month according to reports, Newcastle will hope they can be successful in this pursuit.

Moreover, the “magic” Magpies target – as he was once labelled by current boss Brendan Rodgers – would offer Jacob Murphy some great competition on Tyneside if a move does get finalised, with the German winger far surpassing the 29-year-old’s numbers playing in Scotland this season.

What Nicolas Kuhn could offer Newcastle

It does appear that the in-demand German has outgrown his surroundings at Celtic Park – hence all this frenzied interest coming from England – with the ex-RB Leipzig man just toying with defenders week in week out now in Scotland.

This campaign to date, Kuhn has fired home an outrageous 14 goals from 25 overall games, with a further 11 assists also tallied up.

One of those sublime strikes even came on Europe’s grandest stage as the tricky Bhoys number 10 delicately curled an opportunity home in the Champions League, which is a competition Newcastle would love to compete in again very soon if they can enter into the top four spots in the Premier League in 2025.

Adding in top-quality talents such as Kuhn could help them achieve that far-off goal, with the Toon also wanting to get rid of some deadwood now surfacing in their camp in the form of Almiron down the right.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Kuhn would fit in well with the gung-ho style of play Newcastle have perfected over recent weeks, with more progressive carries and successful take-ons managed over the last year compared to both Murphy and Almiron.

On top of that, his goal and assist numbers for the campaign to date completely blow Murphy out of the water, who has just nine goal contributions in all competitions in contrast.

Also similar to Anthony Gordon according to FBref’s similar players feature, Kuhn could well seamlessly fit into the set-up under Howe, with the potential for the Magpies to cause even more issues for Premier League defences to cope with if the Celtic attacker relocates to Tyneside.

Whilst Howe will likely be content with what he has currently, January will be an apt time for him to add even more quality to make 2025 a memorable year at St James’ Park.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Old Firm rivals Celtic are closing in on another Scottish Premiership title, with there clearly work for Rangers to do heading forward. Liverpool legend Gerrard was the last man to deliver a domestic crown to the blue half of Glasgow in 2020-21. He is out of work after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has admitted that he may be tempted to link up with a Scottish giant at some stage – with the outspoken former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid boss currently in Turkey with Fenerbahce.

    WHAT ALLY MCCOIST SAID

Gers legend McCoist has told when asked if Gerrard or the ‘Special One’ would be good fits at Ibrox: “Yes, I think both could fit the bill in terms of stature and what they’d bring to the club and Scottish football in general. But they’d both need proper financial backing. The current squad just isn’t strong enough.”

QPR now join race to sign £15,000-p/w striker in January transfer window

Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing a “really exciting” striker in the January transfer window, according to a recent report. The Rs made it five unbeaten and back-to-back wins on Wednesday night, as they beat Oxford United 2-0, a result that sees them climb to 19th in the Championship table, four points adrift of the relegation zone.

QPR news and updates

It was another impressive night for QPR in front of their home fans, but it could have potentially come at a cost, as Marti Cifuentes revealed a concerning update on midfielder Nicolas Madsen after the game.

Cifuentes said: “For the second game in a row, he gets a big impact around his ankle, shin, and calf all this area. He was very painful, so immediately when he went out, he told me that he would try but that he was not feeling very confident. Hopefully, it will just be a knock, and he will be ready for Saturday.”

Despite the upturn in form in recent weeks, QPR will still have their eye on potential business for January, as they look to climb the table and not continue this fight at the bottom. It was reported earlier this week that QPR are among the teams interested in signing Louie Barry on loan from Aston Villa.

The forward is expected to be recalled from his loan at Stockport County and then sent out to a higher-level team next month. The Rs could face a difficult battle to win this race, as Middlesbrough are said to be leading this charge, and Leeds United are also interested in signing Barry.

QPR join transfer race to sign Leeds outcast According to Football League World,Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing Joe Gelhardtfrom Leeds in January, which would perhaps pave the way for the aforementioned Barry to move to Elland Road. The 22-year-old looks set to leave Yorkshire in some capacity in January, as he’s fallen way down the pecking order under Daniel Farke.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

Gelhardt, who earns £15,000 a week, has played just three times for Leeds this season; two have been substitute appearances in the league, which add up to a total of nine minutes of football, and the other was 63 minutes in the Carabao Cup.

It was reported earlier this week that Gelhardt is keen on joining Rangers after they made their interest clear, but Leeds were undecided as they didn’t know whether to sell the striker or loan him out. But Gelhardt has another option to consider, as QPR are also interested in signing him in January.

Football League World reports that the 22-year-old, who has been dubbed “really exciting” by Jamie Redknapp, is on the Rs’ radar ahead of next month, but they face plenty of competition to secure a transfer, as a host of other Championship teams are also interested. It is likely that QPR will only be able to afford a loan deal for Gelhardt, so it will depend on what Leeds want to do with the striker.

Man United must drop 5/10 star who "copped some grief" from Amorim

Is it too early to say Manchester United are back? Probably, but who doesn’t love a bit of hype? It feels like an age since the Red Devils had something to smile about so we’ll let them off on this occasion.

Since Erik ten Hag’s sacking last month, United have been excellent. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim period in charge didn’t see Old Trafford outfit lose a single game and since Ruben Amorim was appointed, they’ve not lost either.

The draw with Ipswich a week ago wasn’t the most ideal of ways to start and there were some nervy moments against Bodo/Glimt in midweek but everything came together against Everton on Sunday afternoon.

This was arguably United’s finest performance of the season to date as they stuck four past the Toffees whose relegation-threatened woes show no sign of letting up.

So, who was the main winner from the hosts’ excellent win on Sunday? That was arguably Amad Diallo.

Man United's best player against Everton

What a win this was. Even Joshua Zirkzee found the net twice. The Netherlands international has been far from his best since arriving in the summer and these were his first Premier League goals since that late debut strike against Fulham on the opening night of the campaign.

From that moment onwards his play has been sluggish, his touch lacks any form of finesse and he has been shoddy in front of goal.

That wasn’t the story on Sunday as he and Marcus Rashford, a man reborn since Amorim came in, helped to send the home support home rather cheerfully.

They owe a great deal of thanks to 22-year-old winger Amad, however. When he signed for United it’s unlikely he saw his future as a wing-back.

After all, this is a hugely exciting winger, someone who thrives in the final third of the pitch. Well, having now played there on a couple of occasions over the last week, he’s been one of the real bright sparks of the new manager’s tenure.

He has four assists in his last four games and the display we saw from the Ivorian on Sunday was quite marvellous. He galloped forward to tee up Rashford’s second and was also the provider of Zirkzee’s second, racing away from the Toffees defence before laying the ball on a plate.

A genuine livewire, no player left the field having completed more dribbles or made more key passes than Amad.

It’s a timely return to form for the Manchester club who now head to Arsenal in midweek. They will do so without Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez who have both been suspended.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Man United's biggest underperformer against Everton

While the likes of Rashford, Zirkzee and Amad have surely made themselves undroppable with their fine displays on Sunday, the same cannot be said of Casemiro. Is that a surprise?

The trouble is that Amorim may well start him. With Mainoo suspended Manuel Ugarte will need someone to partner him. Well, that player could well be Mason Mount who came on in the 80th minute for Mainoo.

He happened to last longer than Casemiro who was hauled off after 66 minutes having “copped some grief” from the manager in the words of journalist Samuel Luckhurst, who wasn’t happy at the Brazilian’s lack of pressing.

To visibly irk a new boss is far from ideal and after this, it would not be a surprise if he is dropped. The Arsenal midfield – chiefly Martin Odegaard – isn’t a player you can treat lightly and playing Casemiro against the Norwegian feels like a recipe for disaster.

Handed a 5/10 match rating by the aforementioned Luckhurst, the writer noted that ‘his tendency to slide in desperately was evident again’. That’s something you simply cannot afford to do against a team as good as Arsenal.

From a numbers point of view, it was an alright performance, truth be told. Casemiro won seven of his ten duels and ended the game with an 85% pass success rate.

That being said, it’s not a role the likes of Ugarte or Mount can’t perform themselves while offering a better degree of mobility and pressing. They should start instead in a few days time.
