Busy summer for Tottenham: Pochettino to be given funds ahead of 2019-20 campaign

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino will be backed in the transfer market this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Tottenham incredibly reached the final of this season’s Champions League, suffering a 2-0 loss to Liverpool in Saturday night’s showpiece event.

There is no question that the defeat will be seen as a huge opportunity missed, but Spurs deserve huge credit for making it to the final of the competition.

Their success is even more impressive when considering that head coach Mauricio Pochettino has not brought a new player to the club since Lucas Moura’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2018.

However, according to The Mirror, chairman Daniel Levy is to embark on a summer spending spree.

The report has claimed that Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez and Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon are both targets ahead of the 2019-20 campaign, while there have already been bids rejected for Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele.

How much do Tottenham need to spend this summer?

Tottenham’s fourth-placed finish in the 2018-19 Premier League table means that they will play Champions League football again next season.

The capital outfit were some distance off challenging Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title, though, and a considerable amount of cash would need to be spent this summer to make them title contenders next term.

Taking into account the current market, it would not be unreasonable to claim that Spurs need to spend in excess of £100m if they wish to enjoy a similar season next term.

The Mirror have not mentioned a specific number but with Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld potentially moving on, it could be a very busy summer.

Pochettino’s side have proved over the last 12 months that big-money signings do not necessarily equal success.

However, Levy will know that his club have to spend ahead of the 2019-20 campaign if they are to continue heading in the right direction.

Match Preview: Netherlands vs England

[ad_pod ]

Last summer will go down as one of the best for many of the English public. The World Cup was watched in scorching heats across the nation before Love Island hit the televisions every night, with Wimbledon airing simultaneously, and this summer we get four days to relive some of that magic.

England are competing in the first ever Nations League finals this evening, facing the Netherlands in a semi-final clash, with the winner due to meet Portugal in the final to challenge the hosts for the inaugural honour.

Both England and the Netherlands are rejuvenated sides in recent years, enjoying young blood and adding a new energy and identity to the national side. England’s wild ride to the World Cup semi-finals got the nation excited about Gareth Southgate’s men once again, and Ronald Koeman has taken charge of the Oranje in time for some of the country’s finest talents to blossom under his guidance.

So what can we expect?

What history tells us

In the last ten meetings, the fixture has favoured the Dutch, but only slightly. Despite winning four of the last ten encounters, there hasn’t been more than one goal between the two sides since 2001, when Holland beat England 2-0 – there’s been seven encounters since then, four of them ending in draws.

Clean sheets between these two come at a premium as well, though both sides, who in recent years haven’t boasted the best defences, will enter this tournament with back-lines that could match the best in Europe, with Ronald Koeman possessing the powers of European champion Virgil van Dijk and Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, and Gareth Southgate having Premier League winner John Stones and England favourite Harry Maguire.

Despite Southgate enjoying his role as manager a lot longer than Koeman, and boasting a much higher win percentage of 62% to the Dutchman’s 42%, they both average similar goals-per-game records, with England’s at 1.93 per game and Holland’s at 1.83 – so the defences could be key to determining where this tie will go.

Key Battle

If you want an example of how to nullify the attacking threat of a side who like to play the ball on the ground with short, intricate passes, look no further than Jurgen Klopp and Jordan Henderson.

The Liverpool captain was pivotal to the Reds’ Champions League final victory against Tottenham Hotspur, spending the 90 minutes completely disrupting the opposition midfield, causing havoc and breaking any rhythm and flow. Harry Winks, the man charged with receiving the ball from the centre-backs and acting as the heartbeat of the side, completely failed to have any impact on the game thanks to Henderson’s pestering nature.

This role is one the ex-Sunderland man has grown accustomed to, but unfortunately for England, the midfielder is set to start on the bench against the Dutch. In his absence, Ross Barkley must step up for the Three Lions.

When assessing the opposition, in particular Frenkie De Jong, it’s fascinating how often he’s dispossessed. For all his ability on the ball, 27 times across the whole Eredivisie season is a high tally for a man of his talent, and this must be exposed by England.

De Jong’s natural game involves receiving ball from deep, but looking at his incredible tally of 45 key passes throughout the season, he’s clearly dangerous when it comes to shifting play into the final third, so there’s no question he’s the man to disrupt when they two sides meet – even more so than the ever improving talisman of Memphis Depay.

Barkley starting will have its positives without a doubt. The midfielder may have to adapt his role and emulate the Liverpool captain a bit more than his natural game would otherwise dictate, but the Chelsea man does possess more flair and quality in the final third.

Essentially, while he may not be as gifted at winning the ball as Henderson, he’s certainly more efficient with it when he does, shown by his Premier League stats: three goals to Henderson’s one, five assists to Henderson’s three, and even his 22 key passes to the Liverpool man’s 15.

If Barkley can defuse the Ajax man’s natural threat on the press in the same way Henderson did against Harry Winks in Madrid, then England have a very good chance of slowing the Netherlands side altogether and cutting the supply to their very talented forward line.

Team News

Southgate decided to cut Winks, Kieran Trippier, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse from the preliminary squads, while Harry Kane is set to start on the bench after returning to competitive action in Saturday’s European showpiece.

We expect Callum Wilson to replace Tottenham’s talisman in a like-for-like change, with Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford deployed either side of him in a potentially deadly front-three.

Koeman has a selection headache himself having played a back three on occasion, especially with Daley Blind playing so well in a partnership with De Ligt at club level.

However, he’s expected to start with a back four and bring together the most talked about defensive partnership in world football to face Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford.

Tottenham Transfer Roundup: Pellegrini offer, no to Sarabia and Draxler, Ceballos future update

[ad_pod ]

The summer transfer window is always a busy period in the football world, and it is expected to be no different this time around for Tottenham Hotspur. Today’s transfer roundup includes an offer for an Italian international, a refusal to buy two European stars and an update regarding the future of a Real Madrid ace.

Approach for Pellegrini

According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Tottenham have made an offer to AS Roma player Lorenzo Pellegrini’s agent for his services. The Italian’s representative is currently in London, which has seen speculation around his future rise. Arsenal are also interested.

No interest in Sarabia and Draxler

Mauricio Pochettino has turned down the chance to since Sevilla’s Pablo Sarabia and PSG’s Julian Draxler according to the Daily Star. Spurs are still hell-bent on signing Giovani Lo Celso, despite his club Real Betis demanding that the north London side meet his £88m release clause.

Ceballos to decide future after U21 Euros

Reported Spurs target Dani Ceballos will decide his future after the U21 European Championships, he told Onde Cera Radio. “I’m not going to say what was said regarding my talk with Zidane but what I can say is that he was clear with me and once the Euro U21 is over, I will decide”, explained the Real Madrid man.

Chelsea: Drawn-out Frank Lampard saga will not help anyone

It has been four days since Maurizio Sarri left Chelsea for Juventus and, while every expectation is that Frank Lampard will be the man to take over, it all feels a bit slow.

Of course, a lot could be happening in the background without anyone really knowing. But according to The Telegraph, with the west London club unable to operate in the transfer window, it has removed the need to rush into appointing their legendary midfielder.

Still, with just a reported £4m compensation fee needed to be paid to Derby County for their manager, it feels like things are being drawn-out — and that is the last thing either club need.

Last year, Chelsea did not have the best of pre-seasons with Sarri coming in so late, something the Italian himself commented on.

“Our pre-season until now has been a bit crazy I think and so we have to work,” the new Juventus boss was quoted as saying by the Evening Standard last August. Undoubtedly, that is something Chelsea will want to avoid this time around.

Meanwhile, from Derby’s perspective, they will be keen to get this whole ordeal over with so they can quickly manoeuvre in the transfer market as they prepare for another battle for Premier League promotion.

For the sake of both clubs, it is time for Chelsea to hurry up and wrap up a deal to bring Lampard back to Stamford Bridge if that is what his heart is set on.

Could be a superstar: Man United fans want Greenwood promoted next season

[ad_pod ]

A number of Manchester United fans have called for Mason Greenwood to be promoted next season if Romelu Lukaku leaves the club.

Greenwood scored 15 times in 13 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season, in addition to netting eight goals in the UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup.

Just 17, the striker was also involved in the first team last term – turning out against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and also making three Premier League appearances for the 20-time English champions.

And a number of United supporters have said that Greenwood should be fully promoted next season if Lukaku – of interest to Inter Milan – departs the club.

Mauro Icardi has also been mentioned by a number of United fans as a potential replacement for Lukaku.

However, Greenwood has now been tipped to make the step up next term.

Manchester United fans react to links to Ozan Kabak

[ad_pod ]

After a disappointing season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer more than most managers in the Premier League would have been looking forward to the summer.

Manchester United are in dire need of a major rebuild and it’s been unsurprising to say the least to see the club being linked with a wide range of names already.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested the club were ready to make a big-money move to sign Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire, but according to Milan News 24, the Red Devils are going to battle with Milan over the signature of Stuttgart prospect Ozan Kabak.

The links to their latest transfer target saw United fans flood to Twitter to reveal their thoughts on the potential signing and many were seemingly divided over Kabak’s arrival.

Plenty seemed receptive to the idea and felt that having watched the Turkey U18 international in action in the Bundesliga, he had shown more than enough to stake a claim for a first-team spot at Old Trafford.

Others however were less than impressed by the 19-year-old and questioned whether he could make the step up – indeed, a few urged the club to give academy product Axel Tuanzebe a run in the side instead.

Arsenal fans react to interest from unnamed Spanish side for Alexandre Lacazette

[ad_pod ]Having arrived from French side Lyon in the summer of 2017, Alexandre Lacazette has firmly established himself as a fan favourite at Arsenal. The centre-forward, who is valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, had an impressive campaign last year, and was voted the club’s player of the season despite being outscored by teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The 28-year-old’s decision to join the Gunners in the first place came after intense speculation over a move to La Liga, and now according to Yahoo Sport France’s Manu Lonjon, the north London side will meet with Lacazette’s representatives over some new interest from an unnamed Spanish side.Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

After hearing the news that their star forward was gathering attention from abroad, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter and some were rather surprisingly open to Lacazette’s exit.

Indeed, a few seemed to think that the Gunners would have a more balanced squad without one of their two big-money strikers and felt getting a big transfer fee for Lacazette would help Unai Emery’s side with funding moves for other players, like Wilfried Zaha.

Others however were far more reluctant to see the popular France international go, and thought it would be a major step backwards for the club if they gave in to Lacazette’s departure.

West Ham Transfer Roundup: Gomez update, Balotelli offered, Haller comments on future

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s West Ham transfer roundup featured the confirmed departure of an Austrian international, interest in a Bundesliga midfielder and a Serie A side’s pursuit of a former Manchester United forward. Today’s edition includes the Hammers pulling out of the race for a La Liga ace, the offer to sign a 28-year-old free agent and comments from a French attacker.

Gomez deal off

According to Sky Sports’ Live Transfer Blog (09/07, 15:13), the Hammers will not sign Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez this summer. It is reported that the London outfit offered the £45m release clause for the 22-year-old Argentine, but the two clubs could not agree a payment structure.

Balotelli offered to Hammers

West Ham have been offered the chance to sign Mario Balotelli this summer according to the Telegraph. The former Liverpool and Manchester City striker left Ligue 1 side Marseille on a free transfer at the end of last season after netting eight times in Ligue 1, but Manuel Pellegrini is yet to show any interest in the Italian international.

Haller speaks about his future

Sebastian Haller has been talking about speculation regarding his future. The 6 foot 3 Eintracht Frankfurt man told German outlet Kicker, “I’ve heard many things about my future, but nothing new happened, I’m here and happy”. The 25-year-old has been mooted as a target by ExWHUemployee.

Leeds United will be praying Danny Rose exit happens for good reason

[ad_pod ]

According to a report by Football Insider, Leeds United could be edging closer to receiving a multi-million pound windfall as Tottenham Hotspur lay the groundwork for the sale of Danny Rose this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Football Insider reported on Wednesday morning that the Spurs defender had been omitted from the pre-season tour of Asia – something which has now been confirmed – in order to try and secure a move away from the north London outfit.

Football Insider report that Tottenham will sell the England international in the next fortnight if a club matches his £25m price tag, and Leeds would benefit if that ends up occurring.

The story adds that as part of the deal that saw Rose leave the Yorkshire outfit for White Hart Lane in 2007, they are entitled to 10% of any sell-on fee.

Vital for Leeds

It may not seem like a huge amount of money in this day and age, but it could actually be crucial for the Whites.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Club director Paul Bell has already suggested from Australia this week that the reason behind the sale of Pontus Jansson to Brentford was down to Financial Fair Play regulations, which appear to have caused United some big issues this summer.

Balancing the books is hugely important, and if they can do it without having to sacrifice any more of their key players that would be hugely beneficial for their 2019/20 promotion push.

Receiving £2.5m as part of the potential Rose sale could easily make a difference and also help them out when it comes to trying to match Kalvin Phillips’ wage demands – he is said to have already rejected a contract offer from the Yorkshire club.

It may be a slightly unexpected boost, but it could be a very timely one and Leeds will be hoping that a deal happens sooner rather than later.

Manchester United advance in Nicolas Pepe talks with Lille, fans react

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Times reported that the club have progressed in negotiations with Lille over the transfer of Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivory Coast international starred for Lille last term as they finished runners-up in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 22 goals and recording 11 assists in the process.

Paul Pogba may be in Australia with Man Utd right now but is his mind elsewhere? Check out the video below for the latest…

The 6 foot forward is also of interest to other Premier League sides in Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal, although United appear to be the ones making the most progress in negotiations.

The move is said to be dependent on whether the Red Devils can offload Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan – the Italians are yet to meet United’s asking price for the Belgium international.

Pepe flopped at the Africa Cup of Nations this summer with no goals or assists in three outings, but his form from last season means he is amongst Europe’s hottest properties in the market right now.
