Tottenham offered £43m PSG talent who was once "very close to joining"

Tottenham seemingly have the chance to sign a “huge talent” as agents make contact to discuss his availability, as per a new report, and he was once “very close” to making the move to north London.

Spurs have been told what it would take to get a deal done.

Spurs have a few key items on their transfer checklist which are yet to be ticked off.

The Lilywhites have signed Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel on permanent deals, later adding both Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus to their list of summer signings, and they remain in pursuit of Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White despite their threat of legal action.

Finalising a deal for the latter is currently Tottenham’s main priority, according to Fabrizio Romano, who also told GiveMeSport’s Market Madness podcast that they’re confident of eventually sealing Gibbs-White’s signature.

“Tottenham remain confident about their chances of signing the player. But, obviously, now this is a legal topic. They need to have discussions directly with Nottingham Forest to find the solution,” said Romano.

“Of course, it changes the timing of the deal. Tottenham’s perfect plan was probably to sign Kudus and Gibbs-White in 24 or 48 hours. It is now going to take a bit longer, but they remain intent on signing the player.”

According to Alasdair Gold, Spurs also want a new number six to come in, and hold an interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha. However, any deal would hinge on selling one of their current engine room men, most likely Yves Bissouma.

Links to Brentford striker Yoane Wissa haven’t gone away, either, with some credible media sources suggesting that the Congo international is open to reuniting with Thomas Frank at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid interest from Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

That being said, Newcastle appear to be the most advanced right now, and have already seen bids rejected for Wissa as they push to sign him for Eddie Howe.

If Spurs are beaten to the punch by Newcastle for Wissa, an intriguing chance to sign PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani has emerged, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

Tottenham offered chance to sign PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani

The Ligue 1 and European champions are demanding around £43 million for Kolo Muani, a price tag which Juventus are refusing to meet amid extensive talks to re-sign the forward, after his productive loan spell in Turin.

Now, Bailey has told TBR Football that agents have contacted Tottenham over Kolo Muani’s potential availability, coming after he was once on the verge of a move to north London in January.

“Kolo Muani’s move to Juventus has stalled,” said Bailey.

“They want him back, but they want a loan with an option. PSG are not keen, and they believe there are other clubs willing to take him on better terms.

“Kolo Muani has enjoyed life in Turin, but we are told that he remains keen on England – he was very close to joining Tottenham in January.

“Spurs are one of those contacted again, but so have the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle, both of whom are obviously in the market for new forwards. He is suddenly a name who is possibly back on the market, and he is intriguing to these Premier League clubs. He is still seen as a huge talent.”

The France international netted 23 goals and registered 17 assists in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt, during his best-ever season to date in 2022/2023, so it is clear as day that Kolo Muani does have it in his locker.

He also played a key role in helping his country reach the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Kolo Muani is no stranger to the big occasion, and his versatility could also be a very useful asset to Frank as Spurs look to compete on multiple fronts next term.

Mathews, Dhananjaya help extend SL's lead ahead of rest day

The duo helped Sri Lanka recover from O’Rourke’s strikes after Chandimal and Karunaratne had laid the foundation earlier

Sri Lanka 237 for 4 (Dhananjaya 34*, Mathews 34*, O’Rourke 3-37) and 305 lead New Zealand 340 (Latham 70, Mitchell 57, Jayasuriya 4-136) by 202 runsFifties from Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal were followed by steadying knocks from Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva and Sri Lanka stretched their lead to 202 by the close of play on day three in Galle. The latter pair had put together an unbeaten fifth wicket stand of 59 when an extended final session came to a close, as Sri Lanka inched forward their hard-fought advantage – the foundations of which had been sown earlier.Prabath Jayasuriya, ragged on day two, was on the money on the third morning adding three scalps to his overnight tally to end with innings figures of 4 for 136, while Ramesh Mendis grabbed two himself to finish on 3 for 101.Related

Battle of cricket nerds: How Herath helped New Zealand bring Karunaratne down

This was then followed by a a 147-run stand between Karunaratne and Chandimal, which had it been allowed to continue longer would have certainly taken the game away from New Zealand. It was brought to an end, partly by the visitors’ persistence with their plans and the wearing pitch. With Ajaz Patel consistently seeking to exploit the growing patch of rough outside the left-hander’s off stump – so much so that even against the right-handers a leg stump strategy was employed – he finally got one to spit and sneak under Karunaratne’s sweep, to crash into the stumps. That gave New Zealand the opening they were looking for as Will O’Rourke was swiftly brought back to attack the new batter. He would dismiss the other set batter in Chandimal, who would flick one straight to leg slip.O’Rourke’s unsettling pace and bounce continued to trouble Sri Lanka’s batters and he ended up with further rewards for his efforts, getting Kamindu Mendis to edge behind. This put him on to eight wickets for the Test, on the verge of a 10-wicket match haul. With the ball turning more prodigiously as the day wore on, neither Mathews nor Dhananjaya had an easy stay at the crease, but they found runs when offered and rode their luck on other occasions.Even as late as the final few overs and over 100 deliveries into their stand, there was a potential Dhananjaya outside edge that flew past the outstretched hands of Daryl Mitchell at first slip, while Mathews survived an incredibly close leg before shout – only surviving on umpire’s call with regard to the line of impact. But when Karunaratne and Chandimal were at the crease, batting seemed a lot easier, while any pitch-related demons were largely in hibernation. Their partnership was a lesson in discipline and opportunism. As New Zealand peppered good lines and lengths outside off, time and again both batters, particularly Karunaratne, refused to engage. When the lines tightened closer to off, he was equally adept at either going back or reaching the pitch to defend. It helped that the pitch also seemed to be easing up under the bright sunshine. Will O’Rourke took three wickets on day three•SLC

Chandimal, while not as comfortable defending, sought other methods – primarily the sweep and reverse, to shift the pressure whenever the bowlers sought to settle into a rhythm – while he also was keen to use his feet. Both batters were also swift in punishing anything dragged short – Karunaratne’s most productive shot, in fact, being the cut. While boundaries weren’t a feature of either of their innings, they were used as a tool to relieve any building pressure. But for the most part, it was clever manoeuvring for ones and twos that ensured the pressure valve never reached uncomfortable levels. The important stand helped cement a resurgent day that had begun with Sri Lanka grabbing the final six New Zealand wickets for just 89 runs inside the morning session.Sri Lanka had started the session brightly, sticking to consistent lines and lengths, and forcing the New Zealand batters to make things happen. For the most part, New Zealand were up to the task – particularly Mitchell, who seemed in imperious form as highlighted by a disdainful loft down the ground off Lahiru Kumara. Mitchell’s footwork was also positive, very much in line with the approach New Zealand had utilised to such devastating effect on day two.But the lifeline Sri Lanka were seeking arrived courtesy of an ill-advised single to cover. Glenn Phillips called for the single, but Mitchell, by then on 57, was marginally slow off the mark, and that was all it took to find him inches short at the striker’s end. With Mitchell at the crease, Sri Lanka were staring at a deficit potentially beyond 100, but suddenly they scented blood. The next few wickets fell quickly as Jayasuriya and Mendis ran through the tail. When it was all settled, New Zealand’s first-innings lead stood at 35 after they were bowled out for 340.It’s an outcome Sri Lanka would have snapped up if it were offered to them at the start of the day, one which New Zealand had begun 50 runs behind with six wickets in hand. But by the innings’ close, you wouldn’t have begrudged them a feeling of mild disappointment at having given the visitors so many.New Zealand, by contrast, would be grateful for each of those 35 runs, having lost five wickets for 50 runs inside the first hour of play. Phillips made the difference in that sense, as he plundered an unbeaten 48-ball 49, including some monster hits against Jayasuriya, before the last man O’Rourke was dismissed. Those runs, though, might still prove handy.

Brook, Livingstone, seamers square series in style with 186-run rout

Australia’s bowlers were carted all over Lord’s, before England’s dominated under the floodlights

England produced an electric all-round display to set up a series decider at Bristol on Sunday, as they thrashed Australia by 186 runs at Lord’s. Harry Brook’s sublime 87 formed the backbone of the innings which was capped off by the thunderous hitting of Liam Livingstone in a ground-record 25-ball half-century. Jofra Archer then briefly rekindled memories of 2019 with the best spell of his latest comeback, while Matthew Potts bagged a career-best 4 for 38 in an overwhelming performance.Harking back to last year’s dramatic Ashes Test, there was also, briefly, a moment with an Australian wicketkeeper in the spotlight. On 17, Brook glanced Mitchell Starc down the leg side and was given out but queried whether the catch had carried to Josh Inglis, who had been recalled to the side after injury. The replays showed the ball pitching just before his gloves. The crowd booed as the pictures came on the big screen, accompanied by a few chants of ‘same old Aussies, always cheating’, but it was a tame interlude compared to 2023.Following his maiden ODI hundred in Durham, Brook cruised to a 37-ball fifty, adding 79 in 53 balls for the third wicket with Ben Duckett and 75 in 47 with Jamie Smith for the fourth, as England went through the gears in a game cut to 39 overs by heavy morning rain. Livingstone produced a grandstand finish to the innings with a mighty display of striking, including four sixes off the last over bowled by Starc, whose 28 runs conceded amounted to the most expensive over by an Australian bowler in men’s ODIs. England amassed 156 off their last 15 overs.Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh gave the daunting chase a promising start – Head launching a gigantic pull out of the ground over the Tavern Stand – and after the eight-over powerplay Australia were 66 without loss compared to England’s 34 without loss. Overall, the 16 sixes hit in the match was a record for a Lord’s ODI. However, sustaining the tempo was a tall order. Head swung across the line at Brydon Carse and Steven Smith edged an ugly charge at Potts. Then Archer produced something special. An off-cutter at 88.2mph initially shaped in at Marsh before straightening to beat the edge and clatter off stump. It was a gem of a delivery to give Archer his first Lord’s wicket since 2019 and he rightly wheeled away in celebration. When his next ball clattered into the forearm of Marnus Labuschagne, the 2019 flashbacks were in full flow, albeit in coloured clothes, and Archer also added Glenn Maxwell during Australia’s collapseBefore long, however, his ball to Marsh had a contender for delivery of the game (or series) when Carse found an unplayable offering to flatten Labuschagne’s off stump. It was a collective effort from England’s quicks who shared nine wickets – Potts taking three wickets in four balls to rush through the lower order – before Adil Rashid finished things off.Matthew Potts starred with four wickets•Getty Images

Under heavy cloud, the ball nipped around early after England had been put into bat. Phil Salt fell shortly after the powerplay, skewing the excellent Josh Hazlewood to backward point, and Will Jacks picked out the same fielder to give Marsh a wicket in his second over – the first he had bowled since April 3. On a day when Cameron Green was revealed to have a back injury, it was not insignificant that Marsh was back with the ball.Brook initially appeared to be playing a different game to the other batters, as he skipped out of the blocks with three leg-side boundaries prior to his near-dismissal, and England’s momentum built around him. Sean Abbott’s expensive series continued – by the end of the innings his combined figures for three outings were 19.4-0-165-0 – while both Brook and Duckett took on Adam Zampa as well as the other overs of spin from Maxwell and Labuschagne.Duckett, who had offered a tough return catch to Starc before scoring, sent Zampa over long-on for six before moving to a hard-working 51-ball half-century one ball later, before top-edging the legspinner to deep backward square. Smith continued the aggressive approach against Zampa, sending him over wide long-on, and Brook added a second six in the same over to deep midwicket. The 12 overs of spin went for 106.A moment of absent-mindedness nearly did for Smith when he only just avoided being run out when he didn’t run his bat in at the non-striker’s end, although the ball ended up costing Australia six runs as the deflection went to the rope. By then, Brook was challenging for England’s fastest ODI hundred at Lord’s – 61 balls by Jos Buttler – but picked out long-on as Zampa ended his stay from his 58th.Smith fell in the next over, slicing Maxwell to short third, but any concerns the innings may limp to a finish vanished as Livingstone provided stunning late power. A huge blow over midwicket off Hazlewood was followed by the dismantling of Starc’s figures, including two sixes into the pavilion, to the increasingly joyous roars of a large crowd. Unlike last summer, an England-Australia series goes to the final game 2-2, although the weather in Bristol may yet have the final say.

Perfect Son upgrade: Spurs in talks to sign "world-class" £69m sensation

Tottenham Hotspur won the Europa League last season, in case you didn’t know.

It saved Ange Postecoglou’s season, if not his job, and ensured that Tottenham will compete in the new term’s Champions League.

The baton has been passed to Thomas Frank, who has done such fine work in west London with Brentford. The Danish manager has overseen the £55m signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United.

With Joao Palhinha set to arrive imminently from Bayern Munich, things are starting to take shape down N17, but more might be needed in the attacking department.

Especially as captain Heung-min Son has announced that he will be leaving the club this summer.

Why Son is leaving Spurs

Son has been at Tottenham for a decade, joining from Bayer Leverkusen for £22m in 2015.

Across his 454 appearances at the club, the South Korean forward has scored 173 goals and has provided 101 assists.

To have won the Europa League in his final competitive month at the club, ending 17 years of searching for silverware at Spurs, marks a wonderful sense of poetic justice. Son is one of the finest wingers of his generation, after all.

But the 33-year-old has deteriorated over the past couple of years. Still a winger of high quality, he has made the decision to close this door amid talks with LAFC over the pond.

And he’s earned the right to make such a call. But if Son does leave, Frank and Daniel Levy must come together to sign a successor in the next month, even having already landed Kudus.

Spurs getting confident about signing Son heir

As per Spanish sources, Tottenham’s chances of signing Rodrygo this summer are growing, with the Real Madrid forward anticipated to join a new club this summer.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have been named as suitors in recent months, but it’s understood that such clubs’ intrigue is cool, whereas Levy is engaged in promising talks with the Brazilian’s entourage.

Rodrygo, 24, has fallen out of favour in the Spanish capital, but he remains one of the most talented forwards in world football, and Los Blancos know it. He carries the weight of a £69m initial price tag.

Why Spurs should sign Rodrygo

The 2024/25 campaign left something to be desired for Rodrygo, no doubt. However, this shouldn’t dissuade the Tottenham faithful: he is “the most gifted and the most talented player” at Real Madrid, says Jude Bellingham.

Rodrygo's Real Madrid career (timeless)

Furthermore, Rodrygo has spent more time with the Spaniards on the right flank than on the left, which, as a goalscoring right-footer, is his preferred wing.

As you can see below, his return of six goals and six assists from just 12 matches as a left winger in 2024/25 illustrates his potential. Vinicius Junior’s presence precludes him from playing there with regularity.

At times, Rodrygo’s goalscoring numbers leave something to be desired, but he’s a prolific player all the same, having missed just one big chance in La Liga last season, as per Sofascore. Albeit he scored just six goals.

In this way, the Brazil international could be the perfect replacement for a player like Son, who, according to xG (expected goals), has been the most clinical finisher in the world since 2014.

Kudus, conversely, lacks composure and accuracy with his ball striking.

Described by former teammate Luka Modric as being a “world-class” and versatile forward, Tottenham must surely throw the kitchen sink at signing Rodrygo, if they truly wish to turn a corner and challenge at the forefront of domestic and European football with consistency.

Looking at how the South American compares to Son over the past year (having routinely been fielded out of position), you begin to see why he’s so highly coveted, balanced in his output, strong on the ball, electric when charging forward.

Rodrygo carries himself in a similar tactical fashion to Spurs’ soon-to-depart skipper, and it’s interesting to note that he still chalked up 14 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last year in spite of his woes, going 17 La Liga matches before the close of play without a single goal involvement.

But he’s also crisper and more athletic than the ageing great, understandably so. Aged 24, Rodrygo’s best years are surely ahead of him, and given what the two-time Champions League winner has accomplished thus far, it’s an exciting thought to think he could don a new shade of white over the coming years.

Moreover, Rodrygo’s pedigree in the Champions League speaks for itself, and what finer way to take strong steps back onto Europe’s elite stage than by signing one of its superstars?

With Dominic Solanke leading a frontline that does have its range of quality, adding a player like Rodrygo feels like it could complete the set.

An industrious and, as Bellingham says, ‘gifted’ winger with an eye for goal, the pieces could come together with this one, to be sure.

This might be the end of the line for a Tottenham great, but Frank has his wits about him and could ensure that an exciting upgrade is signed if Levy is convinced to go all out for Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

BCB chief: Shakib unlikely to play ODIs against Afghanistan

But he could be considered for the ODIs in the West Indies and later the Champions Trophy

The BCB president Faruque Ahmed has said that Shakib Al Hasan is unlikely to play in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in Sharjah. Faruque stated it was Shakib’s decision to opt out of the Afghanistan ODIs, while also hinting of an emotional element about his failure to play what was supposed to be his farewell Test in Dhaka against South Africa from October 21.Shakib has not played any cricket in nearly a month since the second Test in India and it is expected he will feature in the Abu Dhabi T10 League for Bangla Tigers to get some game time before the Caribbean tour. After the three ODIs against Afghanistan, Bangladesh will leave for the West Indies for two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is. Shakib has retired from Tests and T20Is so he will be available for the ODIs in the Caribbean and later the Champions Trophy in February 2025. Shakib hasn’t played ODIs since the World Cup in India last year.Related

“After Shakib couldn’t come to play his (farewell) Test, he wasn’t doing much practice,” Faruque said at a press conference on Thursday. “I think he needs some time to regroup. We haven’t taken a final decision but he looks unlikely to play the next series (against Afghanistan). He is likely to miss the series. He could be playing a T10 tournament soon. I feel he can still play for Bangladesh in the 50-over format. There are three ODIs against West Indies before the Champions Trophy.”Faruque, however, said that the board will consider Shakib for the rest of the ODIs this season, if the selectors feel that his training and franchise tournament is sufficient preparation. “Shakib has played for 17 years and he is part of the generation that plays a lot of franchise cricket. They know the drill. They play, sleep maybe a few hours and turn up for training. So he is geared for such situations.”It is the definitely the best possible thing to train with the team but we will consider him if the selection committee thinks that he can still deliver by training or playing tournaments abroad.”The national selectors haven’t yet announced the Bangladesh squad for the ODIs against Afghanistan starting November 6, as the board president is also going to hold a meeting with Najmul Hossain Shanto who recently expressed his reluctance to lead the side.Meawhile, Faruque said that the decision for Shakib to skip the Dhaka Test last week came from the government, with the BCB not part of the decision-making process.”The BCB wasn’t a part of the decision of Shakib not coming to Bangladesh,” he said. “Our sports adviser informed the media at the time that there’s a problem if he comes. I didn’t have to make a statement. I heard that there was security till 3 or 4pm, and then there were clashes between the two sides.”

INEOS' next Yoro: Man Utd spotted scouting "incredible" £35m talent

Manchester United’s forward line has had somewhat of an overhaul during the summer transfer window, unsurprisingly so given their lack of goals in 2024/25.

The Red Devils only managed a tally of 44 goals in the Premier League, an average of 1.15 goals per 90 – a tally no way near good enough for a side of their stature.

Ruben Amorim has taken measures to improve such a situation, securing the signatures of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha – with the pair setting the hierarchy back over £130m.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimbefore the match

The pair netted 35 top-flight goals between them last season, potentially forming a deadly partnership with soon-to-be new addition Benjamin Sesko, who has agreed a £74m deal with the club in recent days.

There’s no denying that the trio could cause many sides endless troubles throughout 2025/26, with other areas of the pitch needing similar investment between now and the end of the window.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions this summer

Carlos Baleba has emerged as a shock option for United in the midfield department, with the Brighton star’s agents in talks with the Red Devils over a move to Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old could well be out of the club’s price range this summer, with Fabian Hurzeler’s side slapping a £100m price tag on his head to fend off any interest in his services.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler shakes hands with CarlosBaleba

However, the middle of the park isn’t the only area which could also be strengthened, with United making a move to land Fiorentina centre-back Pietro Comuzzo, according to Firenzeviola.

They claim that Amorim’s side have been spotted scouting the 20-year-old during pre-season, with the club able to get a closer look at the talent in the clash against the Italian outfit this weekend.

The report also states that Sunderland and Bournemouth have also been keeping a close eye on his progress, but any deal could cost any interested party a fee in the region of €40m (£35m).

Why United’s £35m target could be their next Yoro

Leny Yoro was a huge addition to the United squad last summer, joining the club in a staggering £59m in a move to bolster the side in the immediate and long-term future.

The Frenchman had to bide his time during the early stages of the 2024/25 season, but after Amorim’s arrival, he cemented his place in the side and demonstrated signs of being a great buy from INEOS.

He managed to register a total of 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring his first goal against Lyon in the Europa League – helping the side secure their place in the final.

Yoro also ended his debut year at Old Trafford with a tally of 1.7 aerials won per 90, along with a 93% pass completion rate – showcasing his superb ability to be a ball-playing option in the club’s backline.

However, a move for current target Comuzzo could see them land another young, talented defender, with the Italian producing numerous top-tier stats despite his tender age of just 20 years.

When comparing his stats to those of Yoro from the 2024/25 campaign, the Italian managed to outperform him in numerous key areas, showcasing how he can follow in the teenager’s footsteps at Old Trafford.

Comuzzo, who’s been labelled “incredible” by former boss Raffaele Palladino, made more key passes per 90 last season, showcasing his excellent ability to pick out a teammate in possession.

He also managed to win more of the tackles he entered last season, whilst making more blocks and clearances per 90, handing Amorim the added defensive talent he needs ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 20-year-old’s dominance is further reflected in his tally of aerials won per 90, potentially offering the side an added threat at both ends of the pitch – something which has been greatly lacking in recent months.

Whilst competition for his signature is fierce, the club are building an exciting project which any young player may prove to be tempted by in the near future.

£35m for a player of his calibre could prove to be excellent business, potentially seeing Comuzzo strike an excellent partnership with fellow youngster Yoro in the years ahead.

Burnley make contact to sign 25 y/o who scored against Chelsea last season

Burnley have reportedly held talks with the representatives of a player who scored in Europe against Chelsea last season, with another Premier League club also keen on him.

Parker positive despite Burnley defeat

The Clarets endured a sobering start to life back in the top flight on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-0 away to Tottenham and being reminded of the step up in class from the Championship.

That said, Burnley manager Scott Parker still managed to take some positives from the result, saying there was plenty that he liked from him team in north London.

“I thought there were plenty of positives to take, despite the defeat. We started slowly, we were really under pressure, but then after they got their noses in front, I thought we really grew into the game. There was a real impetus about us, we played on the front foot and looked a real threat, our reaction and endeavour was superb.

“The clinical and ruthless nature of the Premier League was then there for everyone to see just before the hour. We had two massive, massive chances, where we just weren’t ruthless enough, and then they go up the other end, create a half-chance, and double their lead with a world class finish. They’re the fine margins – that’s this division really.”

New signings between now and the end of August wouldn’t go amiss for Burnley and a new update has now emerged regarding one potential addition.

Burnley hold talks to sign defender

According to TEAMtalk, Burnley have contacted the agents of FC Copenhagen defender Gabriel Pereira, as they look to strike a summer deal for him. Parker “is keen to bring in more defensive reinforcements”, following the loss to Spurs.

The Clarets are battling Sunderland for the centre-back’s signature, among others, but it looks as though they will both be unsuccessful in their quest to snap him up. That’s because the report also states that the 25-year-old “wants to stay” at his current club for now.

There is no need to get carried away after a 3-0 loss to a Spurs side who are the reigning Europa League winners, with Burnley giving a good account of themselves at times.

That said, defensive additions are key, in terms of ensuring the Clarets have enough options at the back, and Pereira could be an astute signing.

The Brazilian has become an important player for Copenhagen, winning the Danish Superliga and cup last season, and he also scored against Chelsea in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

For now, it appears as though Pereira would rather stay put in Denmark, but the lure of the Premier League is great for most players, and the hope is that he will decide to move to Burnley instead.
