Huge upgrade on Beto: Everton in talks to sign "elite" big-money striker

Although they showed some good signs under David Moyes at the end of last season, Everton certainly had their struggles in front of goal.

The Toffees’ main centre-forward options last season were Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who could leave this summer with his contract set to expire, and Guinea-Bissau international Beto.

As per Understat, the Toffees were outscored by all but three teams in the Premier League in 2024/25, the trio of relegated sides. They found the back of the net just 42 times, and with an expected goals tally of 46.87 xG, they underachieved from where they should have been.

Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin is replaced by Beto.

Everton fans might be glad to hear that their side are looking to bring a new striker to the Hill Dickinson Stadium before next season.

Everton’s centre-forward target

With Calvert-Lewin perhaps ready to leave the club, and Beto struggling for consistent form in front of goal, it surely is no surprise that the club on the Blue half of Merseyside are looking to recruit a new number nine.

Well, it seems like Moyes’ side have found the man they’d like to sign. According to a recent report from The i Paper, ‘the club are in talks’ with Spanish side Villarreal over a move for their striker, Frenchman Thierno Barry.

The France U21 international seems to be ‘keen’ on the idea of a move to Bramley-Moore Dock, next to which the Toffees’ new ground is situated.

Villarreal's Thierno Barry

He has a £40m release clause in his current deal with the Yellow Submarine, but Everton ‘want to negotiate a lower fee’ instead.

How Barry compares to Beto

Everton’s hunt for Barry has been well documented over the past few weeks. It is clear he is the guy they want to lead the line as they enter a new era in their new stadium this summer. He has certainly impressed for Villarreal last season.

Villarreal's Thierno Barry

The 22-year-old, who was born in Lyon, France, played 41 games in all competitions last season. In that time, he scored 19 goals and grabbed four assists, leaving him with an average of roughly a goal involvement every other game.

In La Liga during the 2024/35 campaign, Barry was hugely impressive. He made 35 appearances, finding the back of the net 11 times and grabbing a further four assists. Perhaps the highlight of those 11 goals was a fantastic hat-trick in a 5-2 win over CD Leganes.

Those top-flight goal involvement numbers far exceed what Beto managed in the 2024/25 campaign for Everton. That, surely, is a positive for the Toffees, who will certainly want to improve on their 42 Premier League strikes from last term.

The Merseysider’s number 14 played 30 times in the Premier League, but only managed to score eight goals. He also failed to register an assist, suggesting he is less of a playmaker than Barry, who chipped in with a few last term.

Football scout Antonio Mango explained that Barry has an “elite profile”. Perhaps the fact that he is able to facilitate teammates and create chances for them is an example of the well-rounded profile Mango was alluding to.

Well, the underlying stats on FBref suggest that Barry would be a huge upgrade on Beto, too. For example, the Villarreal striker averaged 0.7 goals and assists and 0.23 goal-creating actions per 90 minutes last season. In comparison, the Toffees centre-forward averaged 0.47 goals and assists and 0.06 goal-creating actions each game.

The stats suggest that Barry would be a big upgrade on Beto. Not only is he more clinical in front of goal, but he is able to bring teammates into the game and is involved in his side’s goals far more often, even if that is indirectly.

Thierno Barry celebrates scoring for Villarreal.

Even if Everton pay the £40m Villarreal want, it seems like an excellent piece of business for a side who are looking to increase their output in front of goal next season.

India fast-bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur has undergone a successful foot surgery, but is expected to be out of competitive cricket for at least three months.Thakur shared a post-surgery photo on his Instagram account on Wednesday, captioned “operated successfully”. It was his second foot surgery; the first one was five years ago in 2019.

The problem recurred during India’s South Africa tour in December-January.He last played for India in the first Test in Centurion in that series. Although he managed to make a return in the Ranji Trophy last season, helping Mumbai win their 42nd title, it is understood he had requested the BCCI for longer breaks between matches to ensure adequate recovery and preparation time.In IPL 2024, playing for Chennai Super Kings, he managed to pick up only five wickets in nine outings at an economy of 9.75.Since Thakur is a Grade C annual contract holder of the BCCI, the board paid the expenses for his treatment. There are chances he could be back before or right on time for the upcoming domestic season.

He'd perfectly replace Kudus: West Ham submit bid for £17m "creative force"

The 2024/25 Premier League season was disappointing for West Ham United with the Hammers coming 14th in the Premier League.

Whilst they were never in any real danger of relegation, they would have been hoping for a much better performance across the board. They lost 17 games in total in the top flight.

It could be all change for Graham Potter this summer with some big outgoings on the cards. One of those is Mohammed Kudus, who, as recently as the 6th of June, was reportedly offered to Chelsea, according to Sky Sports.

If someone as prominent as Kudus does leave the London Stadium this summer, they will, of course, need a replacement.

West Ham's potential Kudus replacement

It does indeed seem like Kudus could be on his way out of West Ham this summer and considering his performances since moving to the English capital, he will be hard to replace.

Fortunately, the Irons seem to have someone in mind already.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Indeed, if the Ghanaian attacker does leave West Ham in the next few weeks or months, they could be set to replace him with Anderlecht attacking midfielder Mario Stroeykens.

A report from Belgian outlet Votebal Belgie suggests that he has been on the Hammers’ ‘wish list for some time’.

In fact, they are already believed to have made a bid for the talented 20-year-old.

The report suggests West Ham made an £8.5m offer, which was promptly rejected by the Belgian giants. Instead, they could ask for as much as £17.1m to make a deal happen.

Why Stroeykens would be a good signing

Belgium U21 international Stroeykens has certainly made a big impression for Anderlecht last season. After coming through the club’s youth academy, the attacking midfielder has gone on to become a key player.

Last season in all competitions, Stroeykens featured 39 times across all competitions, contributing to five goals and seven assists. After starting the season strong with nine goal involvements in 13 league games, he suffered from a ligament injury, which slowed his progress.

The 20-year-old, who was born in Zellik, just outside of Brussels, would also bring European pedigree to the London Stadium. He played 430 minutes in the Europa League last term, both scoring and assisting in that time. The goal he scored was a sublime effort, showing his excellent technical quality.

Replacing the 24-year-old Kudus would not be easy for Stroeykens. The Ghana international has impressed for the Hammers in the 80 appearances he has made, scoring 19 times and registering 13 assists.

His first season in Claret and Blue saw him score and assist 23 times, including five goals in nine Europa League appearances. However, last term was not as fluid, with the Hammers’ number 14 managing just nine goal involvements.

Despite the struggles Kudus endured last season, there is no doubt about his importance to Potter’s side when at his best. That leaves Stroeykens with a big job to replace him, but as football scout Antonio Mango said, he is a “creative force” and can certainly look to match the output of the Ghana star.

The underlying stats via FBref suggest that the Belgian youngster, who tends to operate as a number 10, can indeed step up in Kudus’ absence.

For example, last term he averaged 1.54 key passes and 6.63 progressive passes each game, compared to 1.08 key passes and 2.74 progressive passes per 90 minutes for the Hammers star.

Knott, Davies keep Vipers top of the pile

Stars slip to heavy defeat as Davies rips through old side’s batting lineup

ECB Reporters Network10-Jul-2024

Charli Knott top-scored after taking two cheap wickets•Getty Images

Freya Davies’ impeccable four-for set up Southern Vipers’ no-nonsense seven-wicket bonus point victory over South East Stars to cement their place at the top of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy table.Former Stars fast bowler Davies hadn’t taken four in an innings since taking 4 for 23 in a T20 for England against New Zealand in March 2021, and last haul of four or more in 50-over cricket was a six-for for Sussex Women in 2018.But she extracted great pace to take 4 for 14 at Falkland Cricket Club, to restrict Stars to 120, with local star Ava Lee and Charli Knott both grabbing two wickets apiece.Knott – on her penultimate appearance – then made sure the chase was straightforward with a classy 57, as holders Vipers avenged their Charlotte Edwards Cup semi-final defeat to Stars in style.Vipers chose to bowl, and after a rain delay which knocked the overs down to 46 a side, they ruthlessly sliced through the Stars’ batting.Mary Taylor made the initial breakthrough when she found Tash Farrant edging a drive behind to Megan Sturge, who was keeping wicket for the first time due to a finger injury to Rhianna Southby. But Davies was the bigger danger in dumping the visitors to 22 for 4 with her swing bamboozling Bryony Smith, Alexa Stonehouse and Kalea Moore. The ball to bowl Smith and the one which Moore gloved behind were particular snorters in an often unplayable first seven-over spell of 3 for 10.Alice Davidson-Richards and Bethan Miles recovered things somewhat by putting on 35 but another collapse of 25 for 4 stymied Stars. This time it was the Vipers’ spin which took hold as Miles and Aylish Cranstone were undone by Knott’s smart offbreaks, before the Australian turned Elastigirl to incredibly catch Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones in the leg-side deep.It was the start of two wickets in an over for Lee – playing on the ground she began playing on at Under-11s for Falkland – as the England Under-19s spinner had Davidson-Richards caught behind.Chloe Hill and Ryana Macdonald Gay held things up with a patient 34-run partnership for the ninth wicket before Hill was run out at the non-striker’s end and Dani Gregory was Davies’ fourth victim and Sturge’s third. The reply was emphatic from Vipers. Where Stars had only scored six boundaries in their entire innings, Vipers, led by Knott, had equalled that inside 14 overs.Stars were also not helped by an apparent hamstring injury suffered by Farrant in the first over, which forced her to leave the field.Knott and Ella McCaughan put on 46 for the first wicket inside eight overs before the latter was outfoxed by a big turning offie from Moore.Georgia Adams, after a 43-run alliance with Knott, and Emily Windsor fell but Knott was graceful in dispatching width to reach a 56-ball fifty, her third half-century and fifth score over 40 for the Vipers. It was only right that Knott would cut the winning runs as Vipers romped to the target in 23 overs.

Sunderland now make approach to sign £21m Euro 2024 ace after Habib Diarra

Sunderland have now made an opening move to sign a Euro 2024 “icon” after confirming the signing of Habib Diarra, according to a new report.

Habib Diarra “happy and excited” to join Sunderland

The Black Cats completed their second signing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday, as Diarra joined the club in a reported record deal worth £30 million. The young midfielder arrives from French side Strasbourg, where he excelled under Liam Rosenior during the 2024/25 campaign.

Diarra’s arrival at the Stadium of Light is seen as a replacement for Jobe Bellingham, who left the club earlier in this window to join Borussia Dortmund, following in the same footsteps as his older brother. After penning a five-year contract at Sunderland, the 21-year-old guaranteed that “he will give everything for this team and fight for the colours in the Premier League.”

Diarra said, via BBC Sport: “I’m happy and excited to become a Black Cat and I can’t wait to discover the Stadium of Light and its fans.

Bigger talent than Diarra: Sunderland enquire over "crazy" £21m star

Sunderland have now enquired about landing a star who could be an even bigger talent than Habib Diarra.

ByKelan Sarson Jul 1, 2025

“Everyone saw last season’s success and I guarantee that I’ll give everything for this team and fight for these colours in the Premier League. I’m ready for this challenge and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sunderland make approach to sign £21m Euro 2024 ace

As the Black Cats complete a deal for Diarra, according to Tutto Juve, relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland have now made an approach to sign striker Georges Mikautadze from French side Olympique Lyon.

This report states that after an impressive campaign with Lyon, where he scored 11 goals in 34 Ligue 1 games, Sunderland have made the forward a priority signing, but do face competition from teams such as Juventus, Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as clubs from Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The Black Cats see the 24-year-old, who has been dubbed a “true icon” by scout Jacek Kulig, as an ideal player for Regis Le Bris’ system. Despite the interest from big teams across Europe, Sunderland are said to have an advantage in the race and that is Le Bris and his ambitious project at the Stadium of Light.

Earlier this week it was reported by TEAMtalk, that Nottingham Forest were also among the teams chasing the striker, as they look to take advantage of Lyon’s current financial situation which has seen them relegated to Ligue 2. It was claimed that Lyon are open to offers for Mikautadze, as long as they receive a fee of €25 million, which is roughly £21.4 million.

Sunderland do already have Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda as options for the forward line, but adding a player such as Mikautadze, who was the Euro 2024 top scorer for Georgia, would bring European experience to Sunderland’s front line and a player who knows how to find the back of the net.

Akash Deep uses Shami's advice for impressive Duleep Trophy outing

The seamer picked up nine wickets in the match to strengthen his case as India’s third seam-bowling option

Shashank Kishore08-Sep-2024

Akash Deep finished with nine wickets in the match•PTI

Two balls across two innings defined Akash Deep’s impressive outing in the Duleep Trophy game, where he returned a match haul of 9 for 116 for India A against India B.The first one was Nitish Kumar Reddy’s wicket, courtesy of late seam movement that squared him up to hit the top of the off stump. The second was a set-up that involved playing with Washington Sundar’s mind. After troubling him with the ones that straightened from around the wicket, Akash switched back to over the wicket and bent the ball back off the seam from the same spot to beat his inside edge and rattle the stumps.”The balls I bowled to Nitish Reddy [in the first innings] and Washington Sundar [in the second innings],” Akash said when asked to pick his favourite wicket from the match. “I had been bowling a lot to him [Washington] from around the wicket in the nets. He has been batting a lot against me and had got used to it. So I wanted to do something that I hadn’t done against him before.”Related

Such planning of his dismissals is something he has learnt from Mohammed Shami. His chats have been around trying to have batters guessing which way the ball will move from the same spot. Shami’s set-up of Ben Stokes at last year’s World Cup is possibly a good example.”When you bowl to a left-hander from around the wicket, the ball moves naturally towards the shine,” Akash explained. “I spoke to him [Shami] about how to get the ball to come back in [with the angle]. I have seen him do that.”He advised me not to focus too much on bringing it in. He said it will automatically come over time and when it does, it will become a wicket-taking ball. Because if it keeps going out and then you are able to bring it back in with the shine, it’s tough for batsmen. But he has cautioned me against trying it a lot. But as a bowler, if you’re able to do it, then batters will have a tendency to chase balls away as well.”This ability to generate lateral movement both ways stood out, as much as Akash’s ability to bowl long spells even when at times it felt as if there wasn’t much happening off the pitch. Akash sent down 41 overs across both innings, comfortably the most among all the bowlers in this match. He put this down to the conditioning work he did at the NCA over the past month.”My last proper match was my Test debut in March,” he said. “In the IPL, I played just one game. As a fast bowler, it’s difficult to come back [after such a long stretch]. I was at the NCA for a month, I played a lot of practice games keeping in mind the kind of situations we will face in a real match, so that the muscle memory is used to the rigours of a first-class match.”Akash’s memorable Duleep Trophy outing sets him up nicely to be in the race for the third seamer’s slot for the upcoming home Tests, if Shami continues to remain unavailable. Asked if this performance will help him add to his maiden Test appearance against England, especially with a Test tour to Australia coming up, Akash said he wanted to stay in the present.”I think of every match as my last match,” he said. “I don’t think too far ahead. What happens [the selection] is not in my hands. I’m here in the present, thinking about my process. I’ve now finished a match, tomorrow is a rest day so how can I recover well? I think more about those things. I’m only thinking in the present.”Is he satisfied with his performance?”As a player, the moment you’re satisfied, you won’t learn. As long as that hunger is there to learn, you should not be satisfied. Getting wickets and the final result is different. The ball that I wanted to bowl, how much of it was I able to execute properly? What could I have improved? That’s what I was thinking about all the time.”

Man Utd make bid to sign £44m "king of kings" who scored 25 goals in 24/25

Manchester United have submitted an offer for a former Premier League striker, who has release clause of £44m, according to a report.

Man Utd set sights on Gyokeres alternatives

Fabrizio Romano has now made it clear that Viktor Gyokeres is “only” thinking about signing for Arsenal this summer, with the Swedish striker refusing to turn up for Sporting CP training, meaning Man United will likely have to move on to alternative targets.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is among them, with Rio Ferdinand recently insisting securing the Nigerian’s signature would soften the blow of missing out on Gyokeres, saying: “He’s a centre-forward, he’s experienced, he knows how to score goals at the top level. I’ve seen today that Galatasaray have put a £50m bid in.

“I mean, £50m to get a top-class striker, one of the top strikers in the world, is absolute peanuts in today’s market. I’ll be disappointed if he goes to Galatasaray for that type of money when Man United are crying out for a No. 9.

“I’ll be disappointed to miss out on Gyokeres if we don’t get a No.9 in. But if we got Osimhen, then I wouldn’t be too concerned.”

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhencelebrates scoring their first goal

According to a report from Italy (via Sport Witness) United are also battling Galatasaray for the signature of a different striker, namely Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, with both clubs making contact over a potential deal.

In fact, it is claimed the Red Devils have even gone as far as submitting a bid, although it is unclear whether they are willing to match the €52m (£44m) release clause in the striker’s Fiorentina contract.

Serie A winners Napoli are also in the race for the centre-forward, who is in two minds about his future, with the next six days said to be ‘key’.

Football writer Mina Rzouki was also left impressed by the Italy international’s displays, describing him as a “king of kings” after bagging a brace in a 3-0 victory over Inter Milan back in February.

That said, it would be a big gamble for Man United to sign Kean, given that the forward struggled during his previous spell in England, so it may be wise to turn their attentions to Osimhen, who bagged 37 goals in all competitions last term.
