We are only 11 games into the Premier League season, but Manchester United fans have already been through a campaign’s worth of upheaval.
Following another dreadful start, Erik ten Hag was finally given the boot, and while Ruud van Nistelrooy has been able to stabilise the ship somewhat, all eyes are now on Ruben Amorim to see if he can lead the Red Devils back into the top four this season.
However, for that to happen, the 39-year-old will need his players to rediscover their best form, and while the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Andre Onana seem to be doing just that, some are still struggling.
Marcus Rashford, for example, has four goals and three assists in 18 games so far but only one goal and one assist in 11 league games, which might explain recent reports linking the club with a Ballon d’Or nominee who could replace him, a nominee compared to Vinícius Júnior.
Manchester United transfer news
According to a recent report from Spain, Manchester United are one of several sides intensely interested in Atalanta star Ademola Lookman.
Ademola Lookman for Atalanta
In fact, the report claims that both United and Paris Saint-Germain have already made offers close to €100m for the Nigerian, which is about £84m.
Despite the sensational attacker’s undeniable importance to his team, the Bergamo side are supposedly willing to part ways with him for the fees being reported.
In all, signing Lookman would require a massive investment from United, but given his ability, it could prove worth it, especially as he could be an ideal Rashford upgrade, not to mention his comparisons to Vinícius Júnior.
How Lookman compares to Vinícius and Rashford
Okay, so before we look at Lookman’s recent record and how it stacks up to Rashford’s, let’s first examine this comparison to Ballon d’Or runner-up Vinícius Júnior.
The comparison itself stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Brazilian is the number one most similar forward to the Nigerian star.
Now, to get a better idea of how this conclusion was reached, we can examine the underlying metrics in which the pair rank most closely, metrics including but not limited to non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive passes, passing accuracy, passes and carries into the final third, crosses into the penalty area and carries, all per 90.

So, with that comparison to one of the game’s leading wingers out of the way, how does the former Everton ace stack up against United’s homegrown talent when it comes to output?
Unfortunately for the Manchester-born ace, it’s hardly a competition at all, as, since the start of last season, he has scored just 12 goals and provided nine assists in 61 games, which equates to an average of a goal involvement once every 2.90 games.
In comparison, Atalanta’s “unbelievable” dynamo, as dubbed by former Arsenal player Sead Kolasinac, has found the back of the net on 25 occasions and provided 15 assists in 59 appearances over the same period, which results in a far more impressive average of a goal involvement once every 1.47 games.
On top of being far more dangerous at the moment, the 27-year-old is also incredibly versatile, and while he’s played more games at left-wing than anywhere else, he has plenty of experience playing off the right, at centre-forward and even in attacking midfield, so he’d also allow Amorim far more tactical flexibility when on the pitch.
Ultimately, Rashford could still come good for United, but based on the last season and a bit, it’s crystal clear that Lookman is the far more dangerous attacker of the pair, and therefore, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co should be doing what they can to sign him in 2025.
Man Utd must regret selling "monster" who is outscoring Hojlund & Zirkzee
The impressive international is loving life away from Man Utd.
Helpless. That was no doubt how Ruben Amorim was feeling after wave after wave of Arsenal corners on Wednesday night, with the Portuguese watching on as his Manchester United side somewhat wilted under the mounting pressure.
For the first time in 34 league games, the former Sporting CP boss tasted defeat. A first loss has come just three matches into his Premier League tenure. That’s what life at United can do…
The crouching coach may well have grown a few more grey hairs while witnessing the limp second-half showing of his side at the Emirates, with the 39-year-old’s prophecy coming true that his team will have to “suffer” in the early knockings of his reign.
Unlike in recent years, however, there was at least a semblance of a plan, of an idea in the first 45 minutes, with a stubborn showing helping to frustrate the hosts, even if things didn’t click into gear in an attacking sense.
Worryingly though, that encouraging performance was not built on in the second period, with the new man’s largely enforced substitutions failing to pay off.
At the very least, such a showing will have provided Amorim with greater learning regarding the quality and character of his squad, with further changes likely to be in store for the visit of Nottingham Forest later today.
Man Utd's best & worst performers vs Arsenal
Let’s start on the positives, shall we?
On what was his first league start since the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa back in October, the returning Harry Maguire was a standout at the heart of the back three, with the Englishman making an impact in both boxes. In all, the 31-year-old won 100% of his duels and completed 96% of his passes, as per Sofascore.
His replacement, Leny Yoro, was also a real shining light after entering the fray, with the teenage Frenchman – who won four of his five total duels – showing what the Red Devils have been missing on what was his first competitive outing for the club.
Elsewhere, Tyrell Malacia stood firm in the first 45 up against Bukayo Saka, prior to being hooked at the break following a needless yellow card, while summer signing Manuel Ugarte showed his worth, winning nine duels and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles.
On the flip side, it was a grim night in an attacking sense for the away side, with Alejandro Garnacho looking particularly off the pace, while Rasmus Hojlund failed to even get a sniff up against William Saliba, having made just 20 touches in all.
It was a similar story for those who entered the fray in the second half, with Marcus Rashford – who had scored two at the weekend – having next to no impact, aside from comically putting the ball out of play in the build-up to Arsenal’s decisive second.
Amorim will also have been given food for thought by the display of his captain, with there an argument to be made that Bruno Fernandes could now find himself on the bench against the Tricky Trees.
Why Bruno Fernandes could be dropped against Forest
Resting or benching a player who has started every Premier League game this season – while contributing nine assists in total in all competitions – may appear foolish, but there is a sense of intrigue to see what this side could look like without Fernandes involved.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
A former Sporting man and compatriot of Amorim, the 30-year-old looked an obvious figure who could thrive under the new regime, although there have been lingering question marks over just where he fits in the side.
Against Everton at the weekend, the playmaker started in one of the two number ten berths and did provide two assists, although whether that is a long-term home remains to be seen, with Amorim stating following the win over Bodo/Glimt that “I think he is a midfielder”.

Having then been thrust back into the centre of the park alongside Ugarte for the trip to North London – with Kobbie Mainoo sidelined with suspension – the United skipper was particularly poor, having regularly squandered possession after losing the ball on 13 occasions.
In the first half, in particular, Fernandes had his pocket picked after delaying on the ball, having won just two of his 11 total duels, while remarkably being dribbled past on four occasions.
Bruno Fernandes
The one-time Udinese man did prove two moments of quality – having teed up both Matthijs de Ligt and Antony after the break following set-pieces – yet his suitability in that midfield two must surely be questioned.
With Mainoo now returning this evening, it could be a straight swap alongside Ugarte, with the attacking berths taken up by Mason Mount, Rashford or Garnacho. Equally, pushing Amad further forward is also an option.
Yes, Fernandes could simply move into that wide ten role, yet with Amorim having already done so much experimentation of late, why not roll the dice again by considering life without his captain.
With tougher tests ahead against the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the coming weeks, now would be the perfect time for yet another personnel reshuffle.
Fernandes may be the main man, but after his display in midweek, Amorim must make it clear that no starting berth in his side is a certainty.

Amid the bombings, the Ukraine Cricket Federation CEO who’s been introducing schoolkids to the game hunkers down in Kyiv and holds on to hope for Associate status

In the early hours of Friday, with Ukraine’s army desperately trying to repel a full-scale Russian invasion on the outskirts of the country’s capital Kyiv, Kobus Olivier sprung into self-preservation mode in his seventh-floor apartment close to the city’s centre.”I’ve put a mattress with some cushions on top to barricade the windows in case there is a blast outside, so glass won’t shatter into the room,” Olivier, the Ukraine Cricket Federation chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo. “No one had taken it seriously in the weeks leading up. Everyone thought it was Russian propaganda. When I walked my dogs on Thursday morning, I heard huge blasts and ran straight back to my apartment. It became very real. It’s a terrifying feeling and you feel helpless.”The self-confessed “cricketing nomad”, who has been credited with fuelling a surprising rise of the sport in Ukraine, has so far remained remarkably stoic given the grim situation. The improved deeds of his compatriots in New Zealand have provided a much-needed momentary distraction for Olivier, who played domestic cricket in South Africa and for 14 years was director of cricket at the University of Cape Town, where Graeme Smith came through the ranks.”The guys coming back well after the first Test defeat has lifted me…[Sarel] Erwee getting a century has cheered me up,” he said. “I’m keeping an eye on the cricket to help get me through this horrific situation.”Kobus Olivier is also a principal and English teacher at a private school in Kyiv, and has introduced the kids to cricket•Kobus Olivier
With panicked residents trying to flee Kyiv on Thursday, leading to chilling images beamed worldwide of a traffic backlog, Olivier decided to hunker down at home. He could not leave his four dogs behind and also abandon cricket, which he had helped build from the ground up in his adopted country. So he emptied his bank account, exchanged his money into US dollars and stocked up on food for a month.”Developing cricket in Ukraine has almost been an obsession,” said Olivier, who in his day job is a principal at a private school in Kyiv. “I’ve worked so hard, every day, for the last few years.”When I go to school, kids are always saying ‘when are we playing cricket’. Just two days before the bombings, it was a nice sunny day but still only 5 degrees C. The kids asked me if we could play cricket outside, so we did and they just loved it.”If I left, I don’t know if I could return. It would be so sad to give up on cricket here.”Olivier moved to Kyiv four years ago in a career change to take a breather from cricket, following among other things stints as Cricket Kenya chief executive, national youth coach in the Netherlands and setting up academies in Dubai. The only cricket played up to that point in Ukraine had been by medical students from India, who played among themselves. A few months into his new job, in an attempt to rouse interest among students bored of learning English, Olivier sought a left-field approach and unveiled a game they had never heard of.”I decided to show them cricket and try to help them learn English in a fun environment,” Olivier said. “Luckily I had with me a plastic cricket set. They thought cricket was croquet and had never seen it before. I told them that it was like baseball but more exciting. The kids loved it.”This mysterious bat-and-ball sport soon took off school-wide and beyond to the extent where Ukraine is poised to become an Associate member at the ICC’s annual general meeting in July. Olivier believed Ukraine had satisfied the ICC’s strict membership criteria, which includes the requirement of junior and women’s development, leading to invaluable funding and T20I status.Without sources of funding – cricket is not deemed an official sport by the Ukrainian government – Olivier has had to tap into his reservoir of influential connections to provide equipment and attire.”We’ve submitted a final application to the ICC and it’s ticked all the boxes,” he said. “We’ve done everything we can. We are looking at USD 18,000 a year (ICC funding) if it’s successful. But we want to use the membership to make our own money because we can then approach sponsors that we are an Associate member of the ICC and will be playing international cricket through T20Is.”Without membership we have little credibility and we are essentially playing unofficial cricket in the park.”Kobus Olivier has tried to barricade windows in his apartment in Kyiv, as a measure against shattering glass•Kobus Olivier
The developments in the past few days has halted momentum and there is an unknown over Ukraine’s cricket future although an indefatigable Olivier has remained positive. “If this was closer to July then the ICC might be uncertain to give us Associate membership,” he said. “No one knows what will happen after this but we still have time. The cricket programme will continue.”While he remained hopeful of attaining Associate membership, Olivier’s main concern centred over Ukraine’s cricket hub in Kharkiv, the second largest city in the country and a major target of Russia’s invading forces.”I’m not sure if our cricket oval will survive the bombings,” Olivier said. “It’s a new ground with pavilions being installed and there is a beautiful indoor facility with nets to be set up. That was going to be our cricket headquarters… I’m not sure now.”Amid such a dire predicament, Olivier finds strength in the resolve of hard-bitten locals, particularly the youth he has made such an unlikely connection with through cricket.”People here are tough and hard, they are survivors,” he said. “Cricket has really caught on with the youth because they want to try something new. We have an ambition for Ukraine’s senior men’s and women’s teams to mainly comprise local players by next decade. The girls particularly have taken to cricket remarkably quickly.”I’m just hoping for the best. There’s not much else to do.”

Sri Lanka-born spinner escaped Boxing Day tsunami before moving to England as child

Thilan Walallawita, Middlesex’s Sri Lanka-born left-arm spinner, will be able to compete during the 2022 county season as a home-registered player, after finally being granted British Citizenship. As a child Walallawita, now 23, escaped the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, which decimated large parts of his home country and claimed the lives of over 30,000 Sri Lankans, before moving to England at the age of 12.After developing his game at Potters Bar Cricket Club, Walallawita entered the Middlesex Academy via their age-group set-up, and earned his first professional contract in 2020 after finishing the 2019 season as the club’s leading wicket taker in the Second Eleven Championship. He made both his first-class and T20 debuts later that summer and his List A debut in 2021, all while registered as an overseas player with his citizenship application still pending. Now, however, that status has been resolved and Middlesex confirmed that they will soon be able to register him as a local cricketer.”I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time and it feels like today a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” Walallawita said. “I’ve been a part of this county for ten years and since I first started it’s been my ambition to play as a local player – at last that day has come. I can now concentrate fully on trying to cement my place in the side in all formats and lo longer worry about things off the field that have been out of my control.”I would like to thanks the club for all their support through this process and am looking forward to repaying their faith in me by delivering for them on the pitch. Hopefully I can play my part in what we all hope will be a successful period for the club on the field.Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s head of men’s performance cricket, added: “We are absolutely thrilled that Thilan is now in a position to be registered as a local cricketer and his career with the club can continue to thrive.”He is a hugely popular member of the dressing room here, and he has had quite the journey to reach this point. It’s great to see his patience and hard work rewarded in this way and he can now focus on developing and improving his game.”As a left-arm spinner with immense talent, Thilan is a rare breed in modern day cricket, and is someone that we have high hopes for in the game. We look forward to supporting him through the next phase of his career.”Middlesex have also announced the appointment of Jade Dernbach as fast bowling consultant, following the former Surrey and England seamer’s retirement. Dernbach played for Middlesex’s London rivals for 19 seasons before being released last year.”We are thrilled that Jade has agreed to become the club’s consultant batting coach,” Coleman said. “He is a master of his skills, will be a huge asset to the coaching group here and will be of enormous benefit to the pace bowlers we have in our ranks.”Our plan as a coaching group is to bring in specialist consultant coaches to work with the group and the players, to add expertise where we feel it is needed, and in Jade we couldn’t have our fast bowlers in better hands.”We’ve all seen what a brilliant competitor he is and what a fantastic exponent of pace bowling he is, and the relationship he has with Jono from the time he spent with him at Surrey made him the natural choice for this role. We can’t wait to start working with him and our bowlers are excited about the prospect of learning from one of the best in the business.”Dernbach played 64 times for England in the limited-over formats, and finished his career at Surrey as their joint-highest T20 wicket-taker.Dernbach said: “I am delighted to be joining Middlesex Cricket as a bowling consultant for this season. Having spoken to Jono [head coach Richard Johnson] and Coley, the opportunity to work with such a talented squad of players was one that I had to take.”I’m very honoured to be joining such a great club and look forward to working with and helping all the squad to challenge on all fronts this year.”
Fulham are about to make a bid for a Brazilian playmaker who could potentially replace Andreas Pereira at Craven Cottage, according to reports.
Fulham latest news
Marco Silva’s side have enjoyed an impressive season so far, but face a tough test this weekend when they travel to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool. For the fixture, the Cottagers will again have to make do without Reiss Nelson, who has been one of their star players this term.
The Arsenal loanee missed Fulham’s draw with his parent club last week with a hamstring injury he suffered in the 3-1 win over Brighton at the start of the month, and it’s since been confirmed that he will now be out for a further three months.

Silva will also be without defender Joachim Anderson and defensive midfielder Harrison Reed for the clash, with the latter not expected to return until after the New Year – he needs surgery on a knee injury.
Fulham to bid for Bidon
With injuries racking up, Fulham could turn to the transfer market in January to add players to their squad. According to the press in Brazil, one of those players could be Corinthians midfielder Breno Bidon, who Trivela claims the Cottagers could soon make a bid for.
Bidon, 19, has been one of Corinthians’ key players this season, and it’s understood that Fulham, alongside Arsenal, have been monitoring his progress closely.
Trivela claims that the clubs have signaled to the Brazilian club their intentions to make bids for the player in the near future, though Fulham’s approach could depend on the departure of current star Pereira. The former Manchester United midfielder is a target for Ligue 1 side Marseille and a number of teams in England, including Aston Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham.
Fulham want to keep Pereira, who previously spoke of his unhappiness of being able to leave in the summer, until the end of the season, but if he does jump ship in January, the likelihood of a bid for Bidon would improve.
Andreas Pereira for Fulham.
Bidon, who recently renewed his contract at Corinthians, has recently been described by renowned Brazilian scout SelecaoTalk as “one of Brazil’s biggest midfield talents”.
“Took to pro football seamlessly this year,” they wrote on X. “Europe’s elite will be all over him soon.”
In a follow-up post, they said: “There are many many top talents in Brazil. More than any other league on the planet. Breno is one of the standout ones right now playing at a very good level.”
