Good news, that’s all Arsenal fans wanted, right? This has been a challenging start to the new season and the Gunners are not where they wanted to be at all.

This wasn’t in the script. After two close runs, challenging Manchester City right until the very end, they have fallen behind in 2024/25. Defeats to Bournemouth and Newcastle sandwiched a 2-2 draw with Liverpool that has left them five points behind the Citizens and seven points behind the Reds.

At least Arsenal have the foundations in place at the top of the club to improve. Well, so we thought, anyway.

Far gone are the days of Raul Sanllehi and a lack of transparency from Stan Kroenke. In that regard, the North Londoners are far more organised.

Former club CEO Vinai Venkatesham had done a sterling job with Stan and his son Josh Kroenke, who is seen a great deal more in the public eye. However, since he was thrust more into the limelight there has been a greater sense of clarity at board level.

That has been furthered by the appointment of Mikel Arteta who has been brilliant since being hired by KSE. The same can be said of Edu Gaspar, the club’s Sporting Director who has played a huge hand in transfers and contracts behind the scenes. Sadly, he could be on his way out.

Why Edu has left Arsenal

Surprising news emerged on Monday morning that Edu was set to leave Arsenal.

The story came courtesy of Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail who reported that ‘Arteta is to lose a key ally’.

One of football’s leading sporting directors, the news has been described as a ‘major blow’ to Arsenal with the Brazilian having performed some excellent work over the last few years.

He was the man who backed Arteta when he wanted to get rid of Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang, he was key in the arrivals of players like Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard and has been excellent at negotiating new contracts for some of the club’s key performers, notably Bukayo Saka and William Saliba over the last 18 months.

So, why has he left? Well, according to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, he is exiting for a role across Evangelos Marinakis’ clubs.

Marinakis owns Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Portuguese side Rio Ave with Edu set to take up a position where he’ll have more control than he did at the Emirates.

Little is known with regard to who could replace Edu at this moment in time but this news will likely have sent shockwaves through the football club.

A number of the game’s best Sporting Directors are already taken with the infamous Monchi working with Unai Emery at Aston Villa, Monaco’s former transfer chief Paul Mitchell now at Newcastle and Dan Ashworth – formerly of Brighton – now at Manchester United.

So, who could they turn to? Well, Bayer Leverkusen’s Simon Rolfes is one name who should be on their shortlist when the time comes to replace Edu.

Together with Xabi Alonso, he has cultivated a phenomenal side in Germany. Alonso gained most of the plaudits but Rolfes was the mastermind behind a project that saw Leverkusen win the Bundesliga unbeaten, reach the Europa League final and win the DFB-Pokal, the German equivalent of the FA Cup.

What makes him such an interesting proposition for Arsenal? Well, there are certainly a few shared beliefs and ideologies.

Although the Gunners have made some mega-money signings over the last few years, there is one key theme; to sign players who are yet to reach their prime.

Some of Edu’s key transfers included William Saliba, the aforementioned Odegaard and more recently young faces like Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber. That has been a key strategy and one Rolfes has actually replicated at Leverkusen.

As you can see – Edu has very rarely signed players in their prime (typically between 26-30), and instead has preferred the model of buying young and turning players into potential superstars with the help of Arteta.

That strategy has been employed at the BayArena too, notably when Kai Havertz – a “remarkable” talent in the eyes of Rolfes – left Leverkusen for Chelsea. Who did they look at entrusting? Florian Wirtz. He was just 16 at the time but has now become a genuine star, scoring 18 and registering 20 assists last term.

Since becoming Sporting Director at Leverkusen, the average age of Rolfes’ transfer dealings has been just 22.8, even younger than Edu’s average but that clearly hasn’t stopped them from having plenty of success.

Just look at some of the names below; they have recruited exceptionally well. Clearly, Rolfes’ talent ID is phenomenal and that bodes particularly well if Arsenal want to look at him to replace Edu.

Spotting talent isn’t just about players, however, it’s also about coaches. The 42-year-old has triumphed in this area too. He took the gamble of hiring a young Alonso, as Edu did with Arteta and it’s certainly paid off. It’s safe to say the former midfielder hasn’t got a lot wrong since taking on his job at Bayer.

Like Edu, he’s also capable of keeping his best talent at the club. There will come a day when the likes of Alonso and Wirtz do depart but the fact he was able to convince them to remain in Germany after their unbeaten season speaks volumes.

Rolfes is a man who knows what he’s doing, he can spot talent, he listens to what the manager wants and needs, and executes plans superbly well. At 42, he may not have huge experience but the experience he does have is invaluable.

O capítulo mais recente foi nesta quarta, com a CBF autorizando os clubes a não cumprirem o regulamento, que previa a chegada das equipes à sede três dias antes do evento. Assim, os eventos de promoção da Supercopa do Brasil, como treinos abertos e coletivas oficiais dos técnicos e capitães de cada time, não serão mais realizadas, diminuindo a visibilidade dos parceiros comerciais.

Além do descuido com o próprio produto por parte da CBF, ainda há o descaso com os profissionais envolvidos nestes eventos, além do principal: o torcedor. Somente às 21h desta quarta-feira, a entidade divulgou valores e iniciou a venda dos ingressos para a partida na Arena Pantanal, que terá 80% da capacidade liberado para o público. São cerca de 31 mil entradas à disposição.

A ORIGEM DE TODA CONFUSÃO

A Supercopa do Brasil de 2022 estava prevista para acontecer no Estádio Mané Garrincha, em Brasília, como havia nas edições de 2019 e2020. Contudo, o aumento do número de casos de coronavírus entre dezembro e janeiro e as restrições de público no Distrito Federal criaram uma incerteza, a qual depois foi confirmada: sem garantia da flexibilização para ter as torcidas no estádio, descartou-se a realização do jogo no local, apesar da CBF ter mantido silêncio.

Alternativas passaram a ser estudadas e oferecidas por e pelos clubes, mas não houve consenso. O Atlético-MG não topou, por exemplo, atuar em Fortaleza e não queria o jogo em Cuiabá pelo mesmo motivo: torcida do Flamengo em grande número nas capitais do Ceará e do Mato Grosso. Por outro lado, o Galo sugeriu a partida no Mineirão, o que foi rechaçado pela diretoria do Flamengo.

A confirmação da Arena Pantanal como palco da Supercopa do Brasil aconteceu apenas no dia 8 de fevereiro, 12 dias antes da partida, com a flexibilização da Prefeitura de Cuiabá, autorizando eventos esportivos com 80% da capacidade do público, sendo publicada apenas no dia 15 de fevereiro.

TROCA DE FARPAS ENTRE OS DIRIGENTES

O “vácuo” gerado pela falta de posicionamento público e claro da CBF a respeito do local da Supercopa do Brasil deu lugar para uma série de declarações e troca de farpas entre os dirigentes de Atlético-MG e Flamengo.

Rodrigo Caetano, diretor de futebol do Atlético-MG, disse que, pelo clube ser campeão do Brasileirão e da Copa do Brasil, o desejo de realizar a Supercopa do Brasil no Mineirão era “justo”. Em ofício enviado à CBF, o presidente Sergio Coelho alegou favorecimento ao Flamengo na escolha por Cuiabá como sede, elencando motivos pelo qual o Galo foi prejudicado, como “informação privilegia dentro da CBF”, “falta de isonomia” e “aspecto físico”, entre outros.

Sergio Coelho, que chegou a fazer referência a um “bobo da corte”, sem citar nomes, foi rebatido por Rodrigo Dunshee, VP Geral do Flamengo. O dirigente. antes da confirmação de Cuiabá, também afirmou quea Nação iria invadir e ser maior que a do Atlético independente do lugar, e que o clube rival estaria “fazendo operação tartaruga para tentar atrapalhar a logística” da Supercopa.

Já Luiz Eduardo Baptista, presidente do Conselho de Administração do Flamengo, questionou o que falariam se “se fosse o Flamengo reclamando e não aceitando jogar em nenhum local e a CBF tolerando todo esse mimimi”.

CAPÍTULO FINAL? CBF DEIXA ‘REGULAMENTO DE LADO’

Após a confirmação de Cuiabá como palco e flexibilização do público para 80% da capacidade da Arena Pantanal, mais problemas. O Atlético-MG, alegando falta de estrutura e local para treinamento, informou, no início da semana, que não cumpriria o regulamento da Supercopa do Brasil e só chegaria à cidade no sábado, e não três dias antes da partida contra o Flamengo, conforme previsto.

Rodrigo Dunshee alertou para uma eventual “falta de isonomia” e, na quarta, a CBF informou aos clubes que não seria necessário chegar à sede da Supercopa com antecedência, o que fez o Flamengo também alterar sua programação. O VP do Flamengo voltou a se posicionar e afirmou que a decisão era benéfica.

Com exceção da venda de ingressos, todas pendências da Supercopa do Brasil, enfim, parecem estar resolvidas. Agora, cabe aos jogadores de Atlético-MG e Flamengo, em campo, corresponderem às expectativas criadas para a decisão.

Given the change of manager, the January transfer window could be a busy time for the Red Devils, as INEOS could see this as an opportunity to make a move for any targets that may be available to help Amorim gel his new team better.

Victor Lindelof offered to Juventus

According to Tuttosport relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has offered himself to Juventus, who find themselves in an injury crisis in defence. Lindelof has been at Old Trafford since 2017, and since joining from Benfica, he has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

The Swedish international, who was dubbed “imperious” by writer Dominic Booth in the past, had his contract extension triggered in January this year, and that now runs until the end of this season. He has made seven appearances for United so far this term, three of which have come as starts, in what looks to be his final campaign at the club.

This report states that Lindelof’s agents have put their client’s name forward to Juventus, as his representatives have an “excellent” relationship with Juventus sporting director Cristiano Guintoli. The Serie A giants “appreciate” Lindelof’s profile as a player and his playing style, but his age of 30 doesn’t fit into their plans.

Netherlands fast bowler Vivian Kingma has been banned by the ICC for four ODIs/T20Is for ball-tampering. The incident took place during the third ODI against Afghanistan, which Netherlands lost by 75 runs, in Doha on Tuesday.The incident occurred in the 31st over of the match – part of the Men’s Super League – when he “changed the condition of the ball by scratching it with his nails,” an ICC release said. He finished with figures of 1 for 50 from his 10 overs.Kingma was found to have breached article 2.14 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “changing the condition of the ball in breach of clause 41.3 of the ICC Standard Test Match, ODI and T20I Playing Conditions.”The ICC release said that Kingma – for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period – had admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the expert panel and that there was no need for a formal hearing. Apart from the four suspension points that resulted in the sanction, five demerit points have also been added to the disciplinary record of the fast bowler.”As each suspension point equates to a ban from one ODI or T20I, whatever comes first for the player or player support personnel, Kingma will miss the next four matches that his team plays in either format,” the ICC said in a statement.Kingma, 27, first played for Netherlands in an ODI against Canada at Mount Maunganui in 2014. He then made his T20I debut in 2016 against Scotland. Overall, Kingam has taken 12 wickets in 10 ODIs and eight wickets in nine T20Is.
