126 touches, 108 passes: 8/10 Chelsea star was amazing for his country

Chelsea skidded into the international break with a run of five wins on the spin halted at home by Nottingham Forest.

The early parts of the season suggest it was a wise decision from the club’s hierarchy to part company with Mauricio Pochettino at the back end of last term and bring in Enzo Maresca instead.

He has done a fine job since arriving from Leicester, turning Chelsea from the chaotic mess that they were into genuine top four contenders.

Are we surprised? Kind of. With a bloated squad and a lack of direction, who knew what was going to happen to the Blues this season? Yet, with the squad they do have we shouldn’t be overly shocked. It’s a cracking selection of players and most of them have hit the ground running swiftly in 2024/25.

So, how did some of those star players get on while in action for their countries over the break?

Chelsea during the October international break

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind week and a half for those of an England persuasion with Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke and Levi Colwill now fresh in the knowledge that former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will replace interim manager Lee Carsley in 2025.

Palmer will no doubt be an imperative part of that side having starred now for well over a year in Chelsea colours. He’s come flying out of the traps this term too, scoring six goals in as many games, although four of those did come in the romp over Brighton.

Still, the former Manchester City ace enjoyed a fine break. Although he didn’t score or register an assist, he was named England Player of the Year. Not bad work at all, Cole.

His England colleague, Colwill, was unfortunately left out for the win in Finland but he was part of the backline that lost so dramatically to Greece last week.

Elsewhere, there was a goal for Christopher Nkunku in France colours against Israel as Les Bleus won 4-1.

For Portugal, Joao Felix was benched in their 3-1 win over Poland and then only appeared as a second-half substitute for the final two minutes in their 0-0 draw with Scotland. International colleague Pedro Neto played no part in that match but did start against the Polish, creating one key pass and completing all three of his dribble attempts.

Away from Europe, Enzo Fernandez looked in pretty good touch for a rampant Argentina…

Enzo Fernandez's performances for Argentina

Over the summer Argentina were victorious in the Copa America and with the great Lionel Messi in tow, they have continued their fine form.

Lionel Scaloni’s men were pegged back by Venezuela, drawing 1-1, but they were rampant against Bolivia in the early hours of Wednesday morning, winning 6-0.

Messi scored a hat-trick, of course, he did, while another goalscorer was former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, now of Atletico Madrid.

Fernandez may not have scored but he was phenomenal in that win over the Bolivians. GOAL notably handed him an 8/10 match rating, writing: ‘Thought he earned an assist early in the first half, but VAR called Otamendi’s header back. Otherwise, ran the game in the centre of the pitch in calm and composed fashion.’

The numbers help paint the picture of just how good the Chelsea midfielder was.

During the course of the contest, the 23-year-old World Cup winner was exquisite, registering a mammoth 126 touches and completing 108 of his 113 passes. For context, no player on the field registered higher numbers in either category.

Furthermore, Fernandez won three of his six duels and completed seven of his nine long passes, spraying the ball about in sublime fashion.

The Argentine perhaps hasn’t quite been at his best in Chelsea colours this term but this was a reminder of his qualities.

Maresca will no doubt be hoping for more of the same after the break.

Rohit Sharma leads the charge as India finish T20 World Cup warm-ups with victory over Australia

Virat Kohli turned his arm over as India looked to explore bowling options

A rollicking fifty by Rohit Sharma led India to a comfortable nine-wicket win against Australia in both teams’ second – and final – warm-up game ahead of their main T20 World Cup campaign. India’s bowlers, led by R Ashwin’s 2 for 8, had kept Australia to 152 for 5, and the batters then motored through the chase.Rohit retired out after getting to 60 in 41 balls, leaving Suryakumar Yadav to apply the finishing touches to a chase that had been well set up by an opening stand of 68 between Rohit and KL Rahul.Rohit had captained India in this game, with Virat Kohli sitting out of the batting innings, though he did play an active role in the first innings, being on the field and even bowling two overs.India had Australia in early trouble after Aaron Finch had chosen to bat first, reducing them to 11 for 3 in the fourth over, striking with spin through Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. India had rested both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami in this game, and turned to the spinners for half of the powerplay overs. Ashwin, sharing the new ball with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, made an immediate impact, having David Warner lbw for 1 and then Mitchell Marsh caught at slip next ball to rock Australia early. An over later, Jadeja trapped Finch in front, and it was left to Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell to rebuild. Maxwell was uninhibited despite the loss of wickets, playing his reverse hits whenever he saw an opportunity. The two had added 61 runs in 52 balls before Maxwell dragged on against Rahul Chahar.Australia found a bit of a finishing kick via Marcus Stoinis, who stayed unbeaten on a 25-ball 41, while Smith also picked up his pace in the death overs, to drag the score beyond 150.India used seven bowlers, but Hardik Pandya was not among them. However, with Kohli turning his arm over, it suggested India were looking at giving themselves bowling options.India’s chase was largely untroubled, Rahul reprising his attacking role and not reining himself in as he has done often in the IPL. He didn’t always connect with his attempted big hits, but the intent was unmissable. He had three sixes, and was out trying to hit another to Adam Zampa for 39 off 31.Rohit had started rapidly and then played anchor, but he sped up again once Rahul was out. He was on 28 off 25 when Rahul fell, and blasted 32 from his next 16 balls. He retired when 26 were needed in the last 30 balls, allowing Hardik to have a hit. Suryakumar stayed unbeaten on 38 off 27.Ishan Kishan, the back-up opener, has also been in terrific form, but it seems likely he’ll not be in the first XI. Suryakumar and Hardik getting time in the middle further pointed to them being part of the team’s preferred starting XI.Like India had done, Australia also used the warm-up game to allow overs under the belt for a variety of bowlers, using eight overall in 17.5 overs, though none of them posed any sustained threat. However, their key takeaway was Stoinis bowling two overs after recovering from an injury.India had won their first warm-up match against England, while Australia had beaten New Zealand in their previous warm-up fixture.Australia will open their T20 World Cup campaign against South Africa on October 23, while India will face Pakistan in their first game, on October 24.

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange must drop 4/10 Spurs dud after Palace

This has been an incredibly topsy-turvy season for Tottenham so far and that showed no sign of changing against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

A week ago, Spurs had demolished out-of-form West Ham 4-1. They did go a goal down but Ange Postecoglou’s side responded in emphatic fashion.

The Lilywhites went and beat AZ Alkmaar in midweek too so arrived at Selhurst Park full of confidence. Alas, that does not always result in a win, particularly if you are of a Tottenham persuasion.

They were distinctly average against the Eagles this weekend, losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Even though there was a debut for Mikey Moore – perhaps their biggest positive of the weekend – the young 17-year-old could not inspire them to victory.

Tottenham's worst performers against Palace

Moore was handed his first Premier League start of his career on Sunday afternoon but despite being compared to Neymar in midweek by James Maddison, did not take his chance on this occasion.

He was replaced just after the hour mark having failed to register a single key pass or complete any of his three dribbles.

Dejan Kulusevski also wasn’t at the races, a rarity this season for such a strong chance creator. This time around, he was substituted early as well after a game in which he lacked much inspiration in the final third.

The Swede had just one shot and could only provide one key pass during the clash but arguably wasn’t the main culprit. That goes Micky van de Ven’s way.

The Dutchman has starred at times this term – notably supplying that wonderful assist at Old Trafford but this time he put his team in all sorts of danger, giving the ball away that led to Mateta’s goal.

While he will likely his place, colleague Maddison should be put back on the bench.

James Maddison's performance in numbers

Like Spurs’ season, this has been a topsy-turvy week for the former Leicester midfielder. Maddison was withdrawn at half-time in the 4-1 win over West Ham last week.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The score was 1-1 at the time before the Lilywhites went on to score three goals without him on the field.

There was a show of faith in the England international in the Europa League in midweek as Postecoglou gave him the captain’s armband. He certainly led by example, selflessly handing a penalty to Richarlison rather than taking it himself.

However, he certainly didn’t lead by example too much at Selhurst Park this weekend. Alongside Kulusevski and Moore, Maddison was withdrawn on 62 minutes and he did so having had a pretty poor game truth be told.

The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick handed the playmaker a 4/10 rating, writing that he ‘struggled to influence the game, as was ‘outshone by his England rival Eberechi Eze.’

Eze – who supplied the assist for the game’s only goal – did register the same number of key passes as Maddison (1) but he was ultimately better in most facets of the game.

The 27-year-old proved why he’s been snubbed by Lee Carsley in the latest two England squads, having 48 touches of the ball, four fewer than Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs net and ceding possession 12 times.

It was wasteful, lacked creativity and showed why he cannot be trusted to start every game. Spurs scored three without him on the pitch last weekend and should consider attempting to go without him again next time out.

Move over McCowan: Celtic have unearthed next O’Riley in "magical" star

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was dealt a big blow during the summer transfer window when Matt O’Riley was sold to Brighton & Hove Albion on a permanent deal.

The Premier League outfit reportedly paid a fee in excess of the previous Scottish transfer record, which stood at £25m, and this meant that the Hoops raked in a significant sum of money for the Danish star.

Whilst it was a blow for the Scottish giants to lose a player of his quality from the squad, that sale did allow the club to invest in a host of new signings to bolster the club.

Arne Engels, Luke McCowan, Auston Trusty, Alex Valle, Viljami Sinisalo, Kasper Schmeichel, Adam Idah, and Paulo Bernardo were all brought in by the Hoops.

Engels was a particularly lavish addition to the group as they paid a club-record fee of £11m to sign the Belgium international from Augsburg after O’Riley’s exit.

The most similar player to the Danish star, stylistically, from the summer signings, however, was McCowan, who joined on a permanent deal from Scottish Premiership rivals Dundee.

Luke McCowan's form for Celtic

The Scottish midfielder, like O’Riley, is a left-footed central midfielder who looks to impact games by pushing forward to deliver goals and assists for the team.

In the Premiership last season, the boyhood Celtic supporter caught the eye with ten goals and five assists in 37 appearances for Dundee, which proved that he had the quality to produce goals and assists regularly in the top-flight from a central midfield position.

His impressive form for Dundee convinced the Hoops to swoop for his services on deadline day, on the same day that they signed Engels, to be a squad player at first.

That is how it has panned out so far, as the 26-year-old whiz has only started one of his six appearances in the Premiership for Celtic so far this season.

He has also only featured in one of the club’s three matches in the Champions League, coming off the bench against Atalanta, in the League Phase.

As you can see in the table above, McCowan has shown plenty of promise in his limited time on the pitch for Celtic, with two goals and three chances created.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to eventually nail down a regular place in the starting XI amid fierce competition from Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Bernardo, and Engels.

Therefore, despite being a similar type of player to O’Riley, who can also deliver goals and assists in midfield at Premiership level, he may not be able to replicate the impact the Dane had over the course of the 2023/24 campaign.

Matt O'Riley's stunning season for Celtic

Last season, the left-footed magician took his game to the next level under Rodgers after showing plenty of promise during his time with Ange Postecoglou at Parkhead.

In the 2022/23 campaign, O’Riley contributed with three goals and 12 assists, with 16 ‘big chances’ created, in 38 appearances in the Premiership for Celtic under the Australian head coach.

The central midfielder was a superb creative player for the now-Tottenham Hotspur boss but did not find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

As you can see in the table above, O’Riley emerged as a phenomenal goalscoring threat for Rodgers last term, ending the season as the club’s top scorer in the league.

Along with his sublime goalscoring exploits, the Danish star maintained his impressive level of creativity, also ending the campaign as the team’s top assister.

These statistics show that it was always going to be difficult to replace O’Riley in the summer as he contributed so much to the side, with goals and assists, to win matches for the Hoops on a regular basis.

Whilst not a like-for-like replacement from a positional sense, Rodgers appears to have unearthed his new version of O’Riley in German forward Nicolas Kuhn.

Why Nicolas Kuhn is Celtic's new Matt O'Riley

The former Rapid Vienna star, who joined from the Austrian side in January, plays out on the right flank, rather than in central midfield, but is another left-footed magician who has taken over the mantle of carrying the team from an attacking perspective.

Kuhn has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2024/25 campaign, as both a scorer and a creator of goals, and is on course to be as important to Celtic as O’Riley was for Rodgers last term, before his huge money move to Brighton in the summer.

Nicolas Kuhn

The German wizard produced two goals and two assists in 14 Premiership outings during the second half of last season, as he settled into life in Glasgow and Scotland in his first five months at the club.

He had a pre-season to further settle in and adapt to Rodgers’ system, and was hailed as “magical” by the boss after his performance against Manchester City, and has thrived since the real action started.

As you can see in the table above, Kuhn has been on fire to start the campaign with a return of eight goal involvements in seven starts in the Premiership.

He has also created two ‘big chances’ and registered one assist in three outings in the Champions League for the Hoops, which shows that he has also made the step up in Europe.

Whilst he is yet to prove his quality over the course of an entire season, his current form suggests that Celtic already have their new O’Riley as Kuhn can provide quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals as a left-footed ace on a regular basis.
