Man Utd could now sell "unstoppable" star who Ten Hag loves in £86m move

Whilst their recent focus has been on welcoming reinforcements, Manchester United could now reportedly sanction the sale of a player who Erik ten Hag loves in a big-money sale.

Man Utd transfer news

Having shown plenty of promise despite eventual defeat against Manchester City in the Community Shield on penalties, Manchester United have added further fresh faces to Ten Hag's side, confirming the arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich. The duo arrive to complete the Red Devils' backline ahead of the beginning of the Premier League campaign.

Speaking to Manchester United's official website, the first of the Red Devils' arrivals, Mazraoui said: “It’s an incredible feeling to be a Manchester United player, and I cannot wait to walk out at Old Trafford wearing the red shirt. I know that I’m joining the club at an exciting time; everyone I’ve spoken to has the same ambition for us to win trophies together and I can feel the determination to achieve that.”

He is a long-term target in midfield

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 14, 2024

Following the defensive duo's arrival, however, United could be about to bid farewell to an attacking star. According to reports in Spain, Manchester United and INEOS could be tempted to sell Marcus Rashford in a deal worth €100m (£86m) this summer, with clubs in Saudi Arabia willing to make a mega-money move before the end of the month and transfer deadline day.

Rashford, like many of his teammates at Old Trafford, had a season to forget last time out, failing to find form and failing to fire Manchester United any higher than a disappointing eighth. Missing out on a place in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 England squad as a result, the winger now finds himself at a career crossroads.

"Unstoppable" Rashford needs to start season well

Simply put, Rashford cannot afford to endure another inconsistent campaign at Manchester United. Ten Hag must know which version of the winger that he is going to get on a matchday. And that version must be the player who scored 30 goals on top of 10 assists in the 2022/23 campaign, and not the winger who managed just eight goals and five assists in all competitions last season.

At a career crossroads, some at Old Trafford may be tempted to cash in, but Ten Hag will undoubtedly back his forward to rediscover his best form. The Dutchman praised Rashford in January of 2023, saying via Manchester Evening News: "I don't think I said he had to learn to deal with it, but he has; he knows how to deal; he knows that in top football you have to suffer, sacrifice, and have painful moments.

"Especially a player like he is, he's unstoppable, opponents will go tough against him to stop him. But you have to deal with it, and I think he's capable of it. He keeps investing, he keeps going, he keeps focusing for his chances and in the end he got a reward and the team got his reward."

Martin Guptill leads New Zealand charge to series victory

Australia’s batting fell away from a solid platform then a century stand took the game away

Daniel Brettig07-Mar-2021New Zealand 143 for 3 (Guptill 71, Conway 36, Phillips 34*, Meredith 2-39) beat Australia 142 for 8 (Wade 44, Finch 36, Sodhi 3-24, Boult 2-26) by 7 wicketsA dreadful finish to Australia’s innings opened the way for New Zealand to rumble to a seven-wicket victory and a 3-2 T20I series triumph, as Martin Guptill and Devon Conway finished the bout the way they had started it in Christchurch.A pair of wins in spectator-free games had allowed Australia to turn up for the final game with a chance to win from 0-2 down, but on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a crowd again present, Kane Williamson’s side scotched early momentum enjoyed by the visitors when Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch were in harness to completely dominate the closing overs and leave a target of just 143 to win. Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult all made valuable contributions.Guptill and Conway, joining forces as openers, then powered to a stand worth 101 to mean that a rapid second spell from Riley Meredith was nowhere near enough to prevent the match and series going comfortably New Zealand’s way. Having been eliminated from the World Test Championship final by India’s victory over England the night before, it has not been a happy 24 hours for the Australians.Wade roused by his demotionOn a surface that promised to be tired by its third consecutive use for a T20I, Finch was very happy to bat first, but with one significant change: switching Josh Philippe up to open and demoting Wade to No. 3 after four underwhelming games. The move did not work out for Philippe, who took a huge swing at his first ball from Boult and was extremely lbw as it swung back just enough down the line of the stumps, but it had the effect of rousing Wade into action.Finding the boundary on either side of the wicket, and taking his runs with equal alacrity off pace and spin, Wade allowed Finch to bat comfortably in his slipstream, and at 74 for 1 in the 10th over a tally of at least 160 beckoned. Even after Finch fell, cutting Sodhi, and Glenn Maxwell picked out deep backward square leg second ball, Australia were well placed at 99 for 3 with seven overs remaining – or so it seemed.Australians swing themselves off their feetIn addition to Philippe, the tourists also elected to promote Ashton Agar to join Wade, but the shuffling did not aid their efforts to build a second set of momentum in the closing overs. Wade found himself starved of the strike once wickets began to fall, and while still seeing the ball well, ended up miscuing a Boult knuckle-ball from the bottom of the bat to find deep midwicket. Marcus Stoinis and Agar threatened briefly, but upon being presented with consecutive friendly full tosses from Sodhi, both found fielders.Mitchell Marsh averted a full tosses hat-trick, and clumped one big blow beyond wide of long-on, but when he was comprehensively yorked by Tim Southee after an ordinary start to the final over, the innings had slipped well away from Australia in terms even of putting up a total beyond 150. The tally for the final seven overs of the innings was to read 43 runs at a cost of five wickets, a strong endorsement of the way Williamson marshalled his bowlers and fielders to frustrate Australia after such a promising start.Martin Guptill regularly peppered the Wellington boundary•Getty Images

Guptill, Conway take controlThe day’s second change in opening partnerships had Conway promoted to start New Zealand’s chase alongside Guptill. This time, the fresh union was to prove decisive to the match and the series, as they were not parted until New Zealand had 100 on the board and a small Wellington crowd dancing in the aisles. There was some useful assistance for spin, and Meredith’s speed was again considerable, but Guptill and Conway got themselves set before launching with telling effect.Thirteen came from the third over, 11 from the fifth, 12 from the sixth and then a monumental 23 from the ninth twirled down by Adam Zampa, including a Guptill six that landed on the “cake tin” lid, aka the roof of the stands. A partnership ultimately worth 101 before Conway’s exit provided a more than useful extra option for New Zealand in terms of their thinking for the T20 World Cup later this year: Conway, though, seems adept at most batting tasks.Meredith’s speed can’t turn the gameFinch brought back Meredith for a final tilt at the rush of wickets needed to turn the game, and the swift Tasmanian was at least able to have plenty of watchers take notice by grabbing two in as many balls. Conway’s slice to deep point was only partly to do with the bowler, but the fast off cutter that pinned Williamson in front of leg stump – meaning Meredith had dismissed the New Zealand captain twice in three balls this series – will be remembered by the Australia selectors.Glenn Phillips’ first few balls from Meredith were also uncomfortable for their sheer pace, but once New Zealand’s No. 4 got used to the velocity, he was able to respond with shots that meant the fast bowler’s analysis was a seemingly unexceptional 2 for 39. That left the stage clear for the finish, as Phillips delivered the series to his side after Guptill fell, swatting Zampa for two sixes in three balls to win with 28 balls to spare.

Simon Kerrigan shines on return to Old Trafford that once seemed, to him, unlikely

Northants spinner ‘proud’ of three wickets against former side, having doubted at times that he’d be back

Paul Edwards15-Apr-2021

Simon Kerrigan has proved himself capable of taking the first steps in a career revival with Northamptonshire•Getty Images

The short run-up was familiar and so was the number 10 on the back of the spinner’s shirt. Home spectators, if spectators of any variety there had been on the first morning of this game, would have recognised it only too fondly. Perhaps some of them did so while watching on the live stream and mayhap their thoughts went back to Taunton in 2011 and a 22-year-old lad being acclaimed as one of the best slow bowlers in the country. On that September evening nearly a decade ago Simon Kerrigan celebrated Lancashire’s first title for 77 years with his team-mates. And today he returned to Old Trafford to bowl in a competitive game against Lancashire for the first time…It is easy to say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Facile proverbs and fortune-cookie wisdom litter self-help books. It is rather harder to do what Kerrigan seems to have done and rebuild a career which once seemed in ruin. His three wickets today, all of them belonging to top-order batsmen, were a triumph of both technique and mental toughness. His figures of 3 for 53 from 30.4 overs suggest very powerfully that he has recovered the many arts of slow bowling that he once seemed to have lost beyond hope of recovery. On a pitch that offered him only a little encouragement – Lancashire had opted to bat first on it – Kerrigan first contained the opposition’s best batsmen and then removed them. It was a day’s cricket to warm the heart.Steady the buffs? I think not and neither, perhaps, will cricket supporters of any variety who have followed Kerrigan’s career since Taunton. Summoned to The Oval for his Test Match debut in 2013 he was demolished by Shane Watson in the first innings of that game and probably mishandled by the England hierarchy. He returned to Lancashire and for a while all seemed to be well. But gradually Kerrigan’s skills and even his basic control deserted him. In 2017 he played a few games on loan at Northamptonshire but then dropped out of the professional county game. People said he was playing club cricket as a batsman. Then he made a couple of first-class appearances in last year’s Bob Willis Trophy when the careful nurturing of David Ripley and the staff at Wantage Road began to bear fruit. Over the close season he was awarded a two-year contract by Northants and today he began to show the wisdom of that decision. When Kerrigan began to bowl from the James Anderson End, Lancashire’s early batsmen had done the groundwork necessary to build a formidable first innings total. His first three overs before lunch were tight but unremarkable and the main drama of the session was the run out of Alex Davies for 57 by Tom Taylor’s direct hit from midwicket. Kerrigan was recalled to the attack just after lunch when Lancashire were 107 for 2. His control of length and line was so complete that Adam Rossington was able to keep him on until the new ball was taken.Gradually the balance of the first day’s play shifted. Taylor added the wicket of Steven Croft to that of Keaton Jennings when Lancashire’s No. 4 played an indeterminate waft outside the off stump and edged behind. Over the next hour or so Kerrigan contained both Josh Bohannon and Dane Vilas successfully. There were few moving parts in the delivery stride and a dominance that neither batsman could counter for long. Gradually containment led to penetration and the wickets that have given Northamptonshire the advantage after this first day.Kerrigan claimed his first victim when Bohannon was leg before wicket on the front foot for a fine 68 that had been accumulated over three hours’ careful batsmanship. After tea Rob Jones was brought forward in classic left armer’s fashion only to be stumped for 13 by Rossington when the ball turned sharply. Next over Vilas seemed to misread the flight of an arm ball and was struck low on his pad for 26. He probably did not know it but Lancashire’s captain joined the ranks of other world-class batsmen, many of them long retired, that Kerrigan dismissed in his pomp. But this was also a fine day for Taylor, who dismissed Tom Bailey and finished with 3 for 72. And for their part, Lancashire may think they already have a very defendable total in a match where they have picked two front-line spinners and will be bowling last. But as the players left the field it was quite impossible to take one’s eyes off a diminutive figure with his Northants cap and sweater under his arm”There were definitely points in the last few years when I didn’t think I’d be back at Old Trafford bowling in a competitive game,” said Kerrigan. “So I’m pretty proud to be out here today and it was good to get some overs.” Perhaps such characteristic understatement was also very fitting. For when you have proved yourself capable of taking the first steps in reviving your career as Simon Kerrigan has managed, what more is there to say?

After Felix: Chelsea in the race for the "next Eden Hazard"

Chelsea completed their tenth signing of the summer recently by securing a deal to bring Joao Felix to Stamford Bridge, with the former loanee returning to the club on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid.

This took Enzo Maresca’s spending over the £200m mark this summer. The question now is, will there be any more arrivals before the transfer window slams shut on Friday evening?

Chelsea eyeing move for Premier League outcast

According to TEAMtalk, Jadon Sancho still has an uncertain future at Old Trafford, having been left out of the squad to face Brighton and Hove Albion in their second Premier League tie of the season.

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

Juventus are seemingly interested in the United winger, but the report also states that Chelsea are looking to bring him to London, as they could be close to selling Noni Madueke during the window.

No talks have been held between the Blues and United, however, but if Maresca wants to secure his services, he had best start acting swiftly.

The £250k-per-week winger has endured a torrid time of it in Manchester since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021. Could a move south help him return to the form he showcased with Dortmund?

Jadon Sancho’s season in numbers

Having made just three substitute appearances under Erik ten Hag last term, Sancho re-signed for Dortmund on a six-month loan deal, picking up where he left off in Germany.

In 21 matches for the Bundesliga side, the Englishman scored three goals while registering three assists, helping the club reach their first Champions League final in 11 years, although they lost to Real Madrid.

Among his teammates, Sancho ranked second in the squad for key passes per game (1.8) in the top flight, along with ranking first for successful dribbles per game (2.6), as he underlined his class. Not bad for someone who had played just 14 league matches.

Could he follow in the footsteps of a former Chelsea icon, however? As Sancho was previously hailed as “the next Eden Hazard” back in 2020 by former Liverpool star Steve Nicol.

While his form has deserted him since moving to the Premier League with United, his brief stint back with Dortmund proves there is still a potentially world-class player there, he just needs the right environment.

Hazard made 352 appearances for the Blues in seven years, scoring 110 goals and grabbing 85 assists during that time. Sancho may not reach those sorts of levels should he move to Chelsea, but if given a free role on the left wing, he could offer a dangerous threat going forward.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, Sancho ranks in the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90 (3.63) over the previous 365 days.

This clearly showcases how good he is at dribbling and taking on opposition defenders, something which made him stand out so well at Dortmund.

Maresca may be taking a big gamble on signing the 24-year-old, but if it pays off, it could be a wonderful signing, no doubt about it.

Leicestershire 233 and 48 for 3 (Patel 27*, Overton 2-4) trail Somerset 318 (Abell 88, Davies 59) by 37 runsHalf-centuries from Tom Abell and Steven Davies helped Somerset to an 85-run first-innings lead in their LV=Insurance County Championship match against Leicestershire, who were three down in their second innings and still 37 behind at the close. The home side must also contend without skipper Colin Ackermann, who will take no further part after being struck on the forehead fielding at first slip just before lunch. Rishi Patel, his 22-year-old replacement under the concussion protocols, is not out overnight having made a gutsy 27 under pressure against a fired-up Somerset attack.Abell played beautifully at times but rode his luck in making 88, surviving a close run-out call on 15 before being dropped on 54. He shared a 112-run fifth-wicket partnership with George Bartlett and although both were dismissed in quick succession by seamer Ben Mike, who finished with 3 for 50, Davies made a typically elegant 59 to give Somerset the upper hand.Craig Overton then removed Harry Dearden and Marcus Harris in a devastating spell with the new ball, the former brilliantly caught by Abell diving to his left at slip before Australian Test opener Harris fell for just seven, miscuing a hook to square leg to leave them 21 for 3. Josh Davey had already found the edge to have Hassan Azad caught behind.Somerset had been 53 for 3 overnight, but nightwatchman Jack Leach was Leicestershire’s sole scalp as 104 runs were added in an eventful morning that ended with Ackermann’s injury.Leicestershire were convinced Abell was gone to a direct hit by Lewis Hill, swooping to field on the leg side as he scrambled a single off Chris Wright, although it looked a difficult call for standing umpire Tim Robinson without the aid of technology. After Leach was bowled off an inside edge by Mike, Abell was dropped on 54 off left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson, Ackermann shelling the chance at slip after the ball glanced the gloves of wicketkeeper Harry Swindells. It was from a similar, turning delivery that Bartlett looked to have had an escape on 21, although in his case the ball turned past the edge before again being deflected by Swindells and this time felling Ackermann. After treatment on the field, the 30-year-old South African-born all-rounder continued to field for the last two overs of the session but did not reappear after lunch.Having added 55 to that point, the fifth-wicket pair continued to profit, Abell reeling off some beautifully timed off-drives and cuts to take their partnership into three figures. When Mike had Abell caught at second slip, undone by a ball that swung away late, and Bartlett, on 48, pulled him straight to short mid-wicket, Leicestershire sensed a chance but Davies, though out tamely when he clipped a ball from Gavin Griffiths straight to leg gully, made sure the advantage was with his side.

Liverpool hit gold with Klopp signing who’s worth millions more than Chiesa

Let’s all just calm down a minute, why don’t we? First of all, let’s be candid. Liverpool have not enjoyed the transfer window that supporters hoped for, with gaps remaining in defence and midfield.

Martin Zubimendi was the man for the role at No. 6, perfectly press-resistant and tailor-made for Arne Slot’s control-focused system, but despite giving Richard Hughes the indication he would move to Anfield, Real Sociedad’s ferocious efforts to keep him in the Basque Country prevailed.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

The Athletic’s James Pearce has since issued the solemn statement that Liverpool simply didn’t feel there was a suitable alternative on the market. Spending for the sake of spending is not FSG’s way, has never been, and prudence may yet prove to be the right decision.

Ryan Gravenberch has shown that he’s apt to succeed in the deep-sitting midfield position, with promising performances to start the season. It’s an internal solution but were the 22-year-old brought in this month, fans would rejoice at Liverpool’s innovation and ambition.

Is it perfect? No, but Liverpool are in a transitional season that may yet bring silverware through the doors. And anyway, Liverpool completed their attack with the transfer of Federico Chiesa – and what a signing at that.

Why Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa

Many would point to Liverpool’s sole summer signing as a gamble, but Anfield bosses would stress that the shrewd deal is an emphatic move for a small fee – an initial £10m, to be exact.

Versatile and hard-working, the Italy international has myriad qualities that will enhance the creativity and fluency of Slot’s system, though the 26-year-old leaves his homeland with a shoddy injury record that has wrecked much of his growth.

Following Liverpool’s signing, Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports News that Chiesa was a “£70m player” back in 2021, having starred at Euro 2020, playing an instrumental role in his nation’s victorious campaign.

He was also hailed for his “absolutely world-class” performances by journalist Zach Lowy during that period, and will hope to recapture that heady form, now at Liverpool.

Moreover, Chiesa will hope that he has put his injury issues to bed after featuring at the front and centre of Juventus’ 2023/24 term, starting 25 Serie A fixtures and scoring ten times in all competitions.

Should his fitness hold up, it’s hard to imagine that Liverpool have landed anything other than a masterful piece of business, bringing depth and dynamism to a team that already boasted one of Europe’s superlative frontlines.

Mohamed Salah is the cream of the crop, but he’s not the only superstar in the ranks, with Darwin Nunez looking to raise his game and live up to that club-record price tag, rising to £85m, that saw him brought in from Benfica two years ago.

Why Liverpool have hit gold on Darwin Nunez

An interesting striker, Nunez. Jurgen Klopp fell in love with the Uruguayan’s footballing ability during the 2021/22 season and orchestrated his transfer following an incredible season with Benfica that saw him score 34 goals from 41 matches, including two against Liverpool, two against Barcelona and one more against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

He’s only scored 33 goals across 97 appearances since joining the Merseysiders, missing not so much a catalogue as a thick tome of chances in the Premier League – 47, in fact, despite scoring just 20 times. That’s not a good shooting rate.

Still, Nunez might be wasteful in front of goal but it is something that, if fixed, would place him among the finest forwards in the world: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

His underlying numbers speak volumes. As per FBref, the 25-year-old ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shots taken, the top 4% for assists, the top 13% for shot-creating actions, the top 15% for progressive carries and the top 2% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

His positional value, his movements and his endless energy tank suggest that Liverpool could yet hit the jackpot on their maverick, who might flourish within Slot’s ball-playing style of football.

Darwin Nunez looks frustrated for Liverpool

Nunez has played a bit-part role throughout the first month of Slot’s reign, but expect big things down the line. He’s a top-class forward and reportedly even attracted interest from Arsenal in the late stage of the transfer window.

Indeed, according to Spanish sources, Nunez was on the Gunners’ radar this week, with Mikel Arteta and his transfer team mulling over completing a stunning £73m transfer.

This would have been a deal that would have sent shockwaves through English football, but alas, nothing concrete materialised and the £140k-per-week talent remains at Liverpool.

But it does serve as a marker of the player’s skill set, and the high regard in which he is held by Europe’s elite. Chiesa, for example, is an excellent player but his £13m transfer to Liverpool means that he’s currently worth far less than the South American star – with CIES Football Observatory noting that he could be valued at as much as €111m (£94m).

There’s absolutely no reason why the respective players cannot strike a formidable partnership at Liverpool, with Chiesa even ranking among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions per 90 (FBref).

Will Liverpool hit gold with their Italian addition? Only time will tell. But for Nunez, despite his foibles, Liverpool already have, for he adds something different to a vibrant frontline and is worth quite the pretty penny – now imagine a world where he solves his ball-striking quandary.
