Poch must part ways with Chelsea man who’s played less than Nkunku

Chelsea's 2023/24 season came to an end on Sunday as they beat Bournemouth 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to finish sixth in the Premier League table.

The Blues achieved a sixth-placed finish and are now set to host European football next term, having gone through the current campaign without any Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League games.

Mauricio Pochettino will now have a number of decisions to make during the upcoming summer transfer window as he shapes the squad for the new season.

One player who must be ruthlessly ditched from the squad by the Argentine head coach is central midfielder Cesare Casadei, who should be shipped out on loan or sold permanently if a good enough offer comes in.

Cesare Casadei's time with Leicester in numbers

The Italy U21 international spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Leicester City in the Championship but failed to nail down a place as a regular starter in Enzo Maresca's side.

Despite the Foxes' dominance in the second tier, as they went on to win the division, the Chelsea youngster could not showcase much in the way of attacking quality when on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Casadei underperformed in front of goal with the quality of chances that were created for him and failed to provide a single assist for his teammates in 22 matches, only eight of which came as a starter.

He also made just 1.2 tackles and interceptions combined per game and lost 51% of his duels, which shows that the youngster did not make up for his lack of attacking quality with strong defensive work.

Why Chelsea should move Cesare Casadei on

Pochettino opted to bring the Italian gem back to Stamford Bridge to be part of his first-team squad for the second half of the campaign but the 6 foot 1 talent did not do enough to suggest that he should be kept around next season.

Casadei, who was once hailed as "powerful" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, went on to play 11 times in the Premier League over the past five months, all of which came as a substitute.

Cesare Casadei

He played 99 minutes of top-flight action for the Blues and produced zero interceptions, zero goals, zero assists, and zero 'big chances' created in that time.

This meant that the 21-year-old midfielder ended the Premier League season with even fewer minutes than Christopher Nkunku (437), despite the French forward having missed a whopping 39 matches through various injury issues.

The former RB Leipzig star battled back through his fitness problems to score three goals in 11 league appearances for the Blues, whilst Casadei did not do enough with his time on the pitch.

His lack of starts and complete lack of impact on the pitch off the bench suggests that Chelsea must now brutally ditch the youngster this summer, whether that is on loan or permanently.

Chelsea star who won 11 duels simply has to become a regular next season

The Blues star put in a fantastic display on the final day vs Bournemouth to give Chelsea a great chance of qualifying for the Europa League.

ByDan Emery May 20, 2024

Casadei's lacklustre performances, both in the Championship for Leicester and in the Premier League for the Blues, show that he is unlikely to be a useful player for Pochettino next term, which is why he should be brutally parted ways with ahead of next season.

Alex Hepburn, the former Worcestershire allrounder, has lost his appeal against his conviction for rape.Hepburn was sentenced to five years in prison in April 2019 after he was convicted on one count of oral rape following a retrial at Worcestershire Crown Court. The jury heard that the victim, who was left with a post-traumatic stress disorder that included facial paralysis, had thought she was having consensual sex with Hepburn’s then county colleague Joe Clarke, in April 2017.ALSO READ: England players given sexual consent training in light of Hepburn convictionDuring the trial, the jury heard how Hepburn had “dehumanised” women, rating them in text messages to his team-mates in a “sexual conquest competition” on the social media platform WhatsApp.Hepburn, it was alleged, had been “fired up” by the contest and took advantage of his victim after finding her alone on a mattress on the floor of the flat he shared with Clarke. But at the Court of Appeal, Hepburn’s barrister, David Emanuel QC, argued that the WhatsApp messages should not have been used as evidence in the case.”The idea propagated by the Crown, that he was so desperate to win the game this year that he would ignore true consent if he had to, is just not supported by anything in the messages or by the fact of the game itself,” Emanuel said.”I accept it would be different if there was talk of sex against will, or trickery to gain a point, or taking a chance, but there’s nothing like that in the messages.”They are too far removed as to be able to be to do with the facts of the alleged offence.”The panel of three senior judges, including the Lord Chief Justice, Ian Burnett, rejected the appeal.During Hepburn’s sentencing at Hereford Crown Court on April 30, 2019, Judge Jim Tindal referred to the WhatsApp group as a “pathetic sexist game” and told him: “You thought you were God’s gift to women. You saw the victim as a piece of meat, not another human entitled to respect.”Following the case, the PCA – with the help of funding from the ECB – established a sexual consent training workshop. Every England player, male and female, as well as players at all 18 first-class counties and all Kia Super League teams were obliged to attend the classes.

SCL could hire "brilliant" Mowbray successor who’s beaten Birmingham twice

Everyone involved with Birmingham City next season will have an immediate concern on their minds to put right, returning back to the Championship at the first time of asking, after a dismal relegation down to League One.

The American owners at St Andrew's wouldn't have expected a first relegation down to the third tier in 29 years to come so soon into the infancy of their stewardship of the Blues, having only officially acquired the club last year.

Mammoth plans for a new bumper stadium in the pipeline and much more are now mere afterthoughts to the business on the pitch and the immediate business off it regarding the vacant dug-out, with Birmingham still managerless after the departure of Tony Mowbray.

Dropping all the way down to the third tier doesn't mean SCL won't try and flex their muscles to try and pull off an ambitious Mowbray successor, with this highly regarded Championship boss even in their sights.

Birmingham looking at "brilliant" Mowbray alternative

It has been revealed by Football Insider in the past few days that West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan's representatives have spoken to Birmingham about the job post being available at the neighbouring West Midlands outfit, as the Spaniard shows signs of restlessness in the Baggies hot-seat.

Corberan has also shown a keen interest in the Burnley position, with the Blues having to really sell a project to the 41-year-old to make him drop a division, especially if the Clarets come knocking for his in-demand services.

Managing more games just himself than the in-and-out quartet at Birmingham could muster up this campaign, Corberan could be the steady presence the Blues need next season, especially when you consider the former Leeds United assistant manager shone for the Baggies in his permanent manager role to lead them to the Championship play-offs.

Corberan's managerial style

This move could well be viewed as a step down for the current West Brom man considering that achievement is still fresh, but with the likes of Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman labelling Corberan as a "brilliant" manager in the second-tier, the West Midlands outfit would be foolish not to push ahead and try to pull off a coup regardless to send a statement out to their new division.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Corberan would also make Birmingham a far more resolute and well-drilled unit if he were to take over the reins, having made his current Baggies side "horrible to play against" as was further stated by Goodman.

West Brom only shipped 47 goals last season from 46 games, compared to Birmingham's dire 65, and so Corberan could be prepared to win promotion by any means necessary, with more attritional and effective football served up.

It's been the case throughout his successful managerial career in the EFL, with his Huddersfield Town side getting to a Championship play-off final against Nottingham Forest despite never blowing teams away, scoring nine fewer goals than eventual final opponents Nottingham Forest and even beating Luton Town in the semi-finals for a spot at Wembley.

Yet, despite boasting such an impressive track record in the Championship, Corberan has only ever managed to beat Birmingham twice, with the 3-1 defeat he suffered at the hands of the Blues this campaign just finished funnily enough John Eustace's final game in charge of the club before the wheels well and truly fell off at St Andrew's.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Blues chairman Tom Wagner has now finally admitted that that was a decision 'they wouldn't have made' with hindsight now on their side, but with the situation as bleak as it is, Corberan could be the saviour Birmingham need to show to everyone they mean business and aren't going to wallow in their self-pity for too long.

Jacques Kallis, Zaheer Abbas and Lisa Sthalekar have been inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame.Kallis, who retired from international cricket in 2014, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame almost as soon as he became eligible; the ICC rule mandates a five-year gap after a player’s last international match. He is widely regarded as one of cricket’s great allrounders. In addition to being the third-most-prolific Test batsman of all time, with 13,289 runs at an average of 55.37, he also took 292 wickets at 32.65 with his fast-medium swing bowling. He is the fourth South African inducted into Hall of Fame, after Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards and Allan Donald.Lisa Sthalekar with the World Cup trophy•ICC/Getty

Abbas is the sixth Pakistani in the Hall of Fame, after Hanif Mohammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Abbas played Test cricket from 1969 to 1985, and was renowned worldwide for being an elegant strokeplayer with a massive appetite for runs. He scored 5062 Test-match runs at 44.79, and remains the only subcontinental batsman to have scored more than 100 first-class centuries, a feat that earned him the nickname ‘The Asian Bradman’.Sthalekar is the 27th Australian cricketer in the Hall of Fame, and the fifth Australian women’s player after Belinda Clark, Betty Wilson, Karen Rolton and Cathryn Fitzpatrick. Sthalekar, who batted in the middle order and bowled offspin, ended her career in 2013 as one of the premier allrounders in women’s cricket. With 2728 runs at 30.65 and 146 wickets at 24.97, she remains one of only five players to have completed the women’s ODI double of 2000 runs and 100 wickets, with Ellyse Perry the only other Australian in that group. Sthalekar has been part of four World-Cup-winning Australia teams, winning the ODI title in 2005 and 2013 and the T20 title in 2010 and 2012.”Never in my wildest dreams did I believe that I would ever get to join such an illustrious group of players,” Sthalekar said after the announcement. “I was fortunate enough to learn from the best when I entered the Australia team – Belinda Clark, Karen Rolton and Cathryn Fitzpatrick, all of whom have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, and rightly so. The guidance from them and other team-mates along the way kept me focused but also ensured that it was a fun environment.”Abbas joined Sthalekar in expressing his gratitude to those who helped shape his career, while Kallis said it felt good to be appreciated in this way.”I would like to say a special thanks to my family, my country Pakistan, my county Gloucestershire and many fans worldwide who helped me achieve and fulfil my dreams by playing this great game at the highest level,” Abbas said. “It is a final recognition for any cricketer. This great game has made me the person I am. Thank you cricket.””It is something that I never expected when I started playing,” Kallis said. “I certainly did not play the game for any accolades or anything like that, I only wanted to win the games for whoever I was playing for. But it is nice to be recognised when one has succeeded in the sport, it is nice to be recognised by people for something that you have achieved in the game.”Full list of ICC Hall of Fame members.

Daqui a pouco vamos tropeçar, é normal. Nem o melhor time do mundo vence todas.

Tom Helm was the bowling hero as Middlesex dented Kent’s Vitality Blast qualification hopes by landing a tense two-run win over the former South Group leaders in Canterbury.Set to chase 185 at an asking rate of 9.25 an over, Spitfires slumped to their second successive home defeat after failing to score the nine runs needed for victory off Helm’s nerve-tingling last over.Jordan Cox ended a near-heroic run chase unbeaten on 39, while skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond went for a season’s best 89 in trying to slog Helm’s first delivery of the final overThe hosts had made a dismal start in losing England star Zak Crawley to only the fourth ball. Aiming a lofted straight drive against Helm, Crawley’s bottom hand took over and tugged a simple catch to mid-on.Joe Denly soon followed, squared up by a Tim Murtagh cutter, the right-hander was caught at cover off a leading edge as Spitfires stumbled to 45 for 2 in the Powerplay.Heino Kuhn followed, down the pitch to Miguel Cummins, he spliced an attempted back-foot force low to Stevie Eskinazi at cover.Alex Blake gloved an attempted leg-side pull to the keeper against Steven Finn then Jack Leaning’s disappointing tournament continued when he picked out deep square leg to gift Murtagh a second scalp.Kent’s leading T20 run-scorer Bell-Drummond posted his third 50 of the qualifiers from 37 balls, reaching the milestone with a six over cover against Luke Hollman. With 51 required off the last four overs, Bell-Drummond moved into overdrive with a flailed six over long off against Nathan Sowter, a lofted paddle to third man against Helm, who was dispatched over the ropes at mid-wicket for another maximum.Needing 25 off 12 balls, Bell-Drummond and Cox nurdled fours to third man against Cummins who was then cracked for a massive six over long on by Cox.Grant Stewart was run out attempting two off the penultimate ball of the game from Helm and, with Cox off strike, Matt Milnes heaved at the last ball only to scramble a single and spark Middlesex victory celebrations.Bowling first after winning the toss, Kent leaked late runs to a fifth-wicket partnership worth 70 in seven overs between John Simpson and Luke Hollman.Spitfires had made a miserly start with the ball in restricting the visitors to four runs from their opening two overs, pressure that paid dividends when Max Holden, in looking to make room against Fred Klassen’s first ball of the match, skied his miscued drive to mid-off.Milnes undid his side’s good early work by conceding two boundaries and the first six of the game to Joe Cracknell in a scrappy fourth over that cost 22 runs.Denly’s second over went for 18 as Cracknell continued to tee-off and take his side to 65 for 1 after the Powerplay.Playing only his third T20 innings, Cracknell raced to a maiden short-form 50 from 21 balls with nine fours and a six, but his luck ran out next ball when he departed lbw playing across a full one from Stewart.Imran Qayyum struck in his first over of left-arm spin, drawing Martin Andersson down the pitch with a flighted delivery that beat the outside edge to have the right-hander stumped.Kent used three spinners in a bid to stem the run-rate, but Simpson upped the tempo with a straight six and swept four against Denly as the 100 came up after 11 overs.Eskinazi’s steady 22-ball stay for 26 ended in comical fashion and a run out. After being sent back wanting a single to backward point, the visiting skipper slid over and was on his backside watching as Cox gathered the throw to whip off the bails.Simpson, dropped off a sharp chance at wide mid-off when on 35, was run out in the final over for 46, while Hollman gave it the long handle to be run out off the final ball, for a quickfire 46 off 26 balls.Qayyum, the pick of Kent’s attack, completed four tidy overs to finish with for one for 21.
