Stage set for blockbuster finale as mighty India meet top-ranked Australia

The grand final is expected to be one of the seminal events in the history of sport in Australia, and of women’s sport around the globe

The Preview by Daniel Brettig07-Mar-20201:24

How India made it to their maiden T20 World Cup final

Big PictureTournament organisers have been handed their dream final, between the world’s No. 1 team and hosts Australia, and the world’s mightiest and most populous cricket nation, India. An enormous crowd is expected at the MCG, with the ICC releasing extra standing room tickets on Saturday to cope with demand. With Katy Perry performing either side of a contest on International Women’s Day, it shapes as one of the seminal events in the history of sport in Australia, and of women’s sport around the globe. But what about the cricket? Australia, grappling with tournament favouritism and a pair of ruinous injuries to Tayla Vlaeminck before the event and Ellyse Perry in the middle of it, have had the rockiest possible road to the final. They have not played their best cricket, but instead shown forbearance, determination and big-match temperament to forge through what have effectively been four successive elimination matches after they lost the opening game of the tournament to India. In Meg Lanning, they have a captain and top-order bat of the highest possible quality, while in the field they have shown discipline and athleticism to defend middling targets against New Zealand and South Africa. Fatigue, both physical and mental, will be an obstacle.India, meanwhile, have more or less ridden the wave they caught in defeating Australia at the Sydney Showgrounds on opening night, neither beaten nor particularly troubled at any point in their next three group matches, then enjoying the benefit of a free pass to the final over England due to their higher better qualifying position. Shafali Verma has been the tournament’s undisputed batting star, consistently rocketing her team to rapid starts, while Harmanpreet Kaur has marshalled her spin bowlers and the mediums of Shikha Pandey adroitly.ALSO READ: How Australia and India made their way to the MCG finalIf there are any question marks over India, they are matters of belief, having never played in a T20 World Cup final before, let alone won one, and also sharpness: in a tightly scheduled tournament, their draw and the Sydney rain has meant that they have not played a match in more than a week. Australia, in the meantime, have played twice.Form guideAustralia WWWWL (completed matches, most recent first)
India WWWWL In the spotlightAgainst South Africa, Jess Jonassen essentially took up the bowling role left vacant by Perry’s torn hamstring, sharing the new ball with Megan Schutt in the powerplay and then bowling at the death as Laura Wolvaardt threatened to perform a middle-order miracle for her side. It was Jonassen, too, who was the decisive force against India in the final of the triangular series that preceded the Cup proper, plucking five wickets in quick succession to deliver the Australians a narrow victory. How Jonassen fares in concert with the other spin bowlers at Lanning’s disposal will go a long way towards deciding the outcome.Shafali Verma gets ready to take strike•Getty Images

Scores of 29, 39, 46 and 47, all made at whip-crack pace, have made Shafali Verma the most feared top order bat in the tournament, capable of either setting up a big first innings or supercharging any pursuit of a target. Her danger to Australia is enhanced by the lack of any top pace or bounce bowlers to challenge Verma on the back foot, meaning that Lanning will be relying heavily on the likes of Schutt and Jonassen to nail their lines and lengths. The only thing Verma is yet to achieve in this event is a truly major score, leaving India to hope that the biggest innings will arrive on the biggest day.Team newsAustralia will be tempted to stick with the same formula that saw them through against South Africa, although Molly Strano’s offspin is a worthwhile option given India’s left-handers, and she did play in the opening match of the tournament. Georgia Wareham would be the bowler most likely to make way.Australia (possible): 1 Beth Mooney 2 Alyssa Healy (wk) 3 Meg Lanning (capt) 4 Ashleigh Gardner 5 Rachael Haynes 6 Jess Jonassen 7 Nicola Carey 8 Delissa Kimmince, 9 Georgia Wareham/Molly Strano 10 Sophie Molineux 11 Megan SchuttIndia have a very settled line-up after their smooth progression through the group stage and semi-final walkover against England.India (probable): 1 Shafali Verma 2 Smriti Mandhana 3 Jemimah Rodrigues 4 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt) 5 Deepti Sharma 6 Veda Krishnamurthy 7 Taniya Bhatiya (wk) 8 Shikha Pandey 9 Radha Yadav 10 Poonam Yadav 11 Rajeshwari GayakwadALSO READ: Factors that can influence the T20 World Cup finalPitch and conditionsMelbourne’s forecast is mercifully fine for the final after Sydney’s weather travails knocked out England and nearly did likewise for Australia. The pitch itself should be hard and flat, although the ground itself has not hosted any cricket since Australia A’s meeting with England Lions more than two weeks ago.Stats and trivia This would be India’s first-ever T20 World Cup final appearance The MCG has hosted one women’s World Cup final previously, the decider of the 1988 ODI tournament, won by Australia over England in front of a crowd of about 3,000 spectators Australia won all of the first seven T20I encounters between the teams, but India have won six of the past 12 and three of the past five.Quotes”This build-up to the game is something I’ve not experienced before and I’m quite glad that the final’s here tomorrow and we can say we’re involved in it. I always dreamed of being involved in this game, when I saw it was the MCG and they were hoping for a big crowd I just wanted to be involved.”
“We are going to have 90,000 in the stadium and it’s a great feeling. We just need to enjoy the moment because it’s a big moment for all of us.”

Retroreport – Sidhu and Prasad down Pakistan to carry India into the World Cup semi-final

An epic clash between two of world cricket’s bitterest rivals gave new life to the World Cup and knocked out the defending champions

The Retroreport by Andrew Miller05-Apr-2020

#RetroLive
Pakistan’s reign as World Champions has come to an end at the hands of their bitterest rivals, after the most richly anticipated clash of the 1996 World Cup served up a seething, bare-knuckle confrontation under the Chinnaswamy floodlights. The margin, 39 runs, looked substantial by the time the last rites of the contest had been played out, in front of a deliriously satisfied crowd of 35,000 partisan fans who – with whistles, hoots and bonfires in the stands – belied Bangalore’s previously staid reputation in an atmosphere that teetered at times towards anarchy. But the agonies that those fans endured in the course of the contest were real – as were those of countless millions from Karachi to Calcutta as the subcontinent came to a standstill for one pulsating evening. And never was the fate of the protagonists more on a knife-edge than during a thrilling opening stand of 84 in ten overs between Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar, one that appeared to have placed a daunting target of 288 well within Pakistan’s grasp. And yet, in the final analysis, India found the right men for the key moments, as they turned the tables in the middle overs and held their nerve at the death. Their basic team discipline was allied to top-notes of adrenalin-fuelled inspiration – not least a ballistic late onslaught from Ajay Jadeja – as they found the means to outlast a worthy opponent. Fittingly, and poignantly, it was Javed Miandad, 38 years old, and playing in his sixth World Cup after nearly three years of self-declared exile, who was on deck as Pakistan’s hopes faded to black. He bulwarked the closing overs before being run out for 38 from 64 balls, as the mounting asking-rate enveloped his dreams of one final glory.Pakistan will rue their fate in this contest for many years to come – rarely can they have had a contest more at their mercy. But rushes of blood littered their strokeplay as the game slipped from their grasp, not least the wild hack that Aamer, standing in as captain after the grievous pre-toss loss of Wasim Akram to a side strain, aimed at a pumped-up Venkatesh Prasad to eject himself from the contest at precisely the moment when consolidation was Pakistan’s watchword.Prasad’s send-off to Aamer was as feisty and uncomplicated as his subsequent command of the legcutter proved cool and calculating, and Pakistan’s middle order struggled to hit the ground running. Ijaz Ahmed opted to counter his threat with muscle but hoisted a leading edge to cover; Inzamam-ul-Haq attempted finesse, but steered a flat-footed poke to Nayan Mongia behind the stumps. And at 132 for 4, what embers remained of Pakistan’s fight were duly doused by the spinners, Anil Kumble and Venkatapathy Raju, who throttled the contest with four wickets between them, and ensured that India’s lack of a fifth specialist bowler would not prove costly. It has been a slow burn of a World Cup, with mismatches and cancellations dominating an over-long group stage, in which the only real jeopardy for the senior Test nations has been the identity and venue of these knock-outs. And after squandering their chance of a home tie in Karachi with last week’s untimely loss to South Africa, Pakistan’s plans took a further hit in the build-up, with Wasim’s absence compounded by the loss of an important toss which left them the unenviable task of chasing in Bangalore’s floodlit debut. That prospect perhaps informed the tempo of the game’s opening exchanges, as Pakistan shelved their habitual aggression with the new ball and veered very early towards containment. Navjot Sidhu responded with a maturely compiled 93 from 115 balls, an innings in which he outscored his more illustrious partner Sachin Tendulkar by almost 2 to 1 in an opening stand of 90. But at 237 for 6 after 47 overs, India’s innings was in danger of drifting towards mediocrity.Until, that is, an astonishing late onslaught from Jadeja, whose natural attributes of strength and timing surged to the fore to eviscerate Pakistan’s death bowlers. No-one suffered more gruesomely than Waqar Younis, whose first eight overs had yielded 27 runs, but whose final two were smashed for 22 and 18 respectively – or dis-respectfully, you might say.Up until that moment, Pakistan seemed to have been earning their rewards for perseverance. At 168 for 2, Mushtaq Ahmed – a key player in the 1992 triumph – dislodged Sidhu with the flipper when a century was there for the taking, then followed up with a masterfully disguised googly to bowl Vinod Kambli on the charge for 24. Mohammad Azharuddin had already gone by then, supremely snaffled by Rashid Latif to give Waqar the wicket that his endeavours had earned, and when Mongia was run out for 3, a total of 250 seemed the upper limit of their ambitions and the Chinnaswamy was taut with apprehension. And yet, Jadeja’s part in that run-out seemed to click him into instant overdrive. Having survived a screechingly close lbw appeal from his first ball against Waqar, he decided thereafter not to let his legs be a target as he carved repeatedly and violently through the line and across the ropes. From consecutive Waqar deliveries Jadeja creamed four, six, four, six – the best of the lot an insolent slog over wide long-off as he seized on a fractional erring in line with disdain, and when Aaqib Javed banged one in short in between whiles, he slapped a further four off his eyebrows to send the whole of his country into raptures.By the time he holed out to long-on to end Waqar’s torment, Jadeja had racked up 45 from 25 balls, and with Kumble chiming in as well, India helped themselves to 50 runs in three overs that seemed, surely, to have put the game beyond reach. But Pakistan weren’t to be beaten quite that easily, and in scenes as eerily silent as a Hitchcock thriller, Aamer and Anwar made it their business to tear chunks out of the target in an opening salvo so calm and calculating it seemed to pan out in slow motion.Javagal Srinath was bunted over midwicket by Aamer in his first over, before Anwar opened his night’s work with back-to-back boundaries off Prasad, including a cover drive so pre-meditated, he might as well have started playing it on the flight over the border. The hits just kept on coming, so much so that Azharuddin turned to Kumble as early as the fifth over, but even he found himself soaring into the stands at long-on as Anwar kept his foot to the floor. And when Srinath was plucked off the toes high over midwicket for Anwar’s second six of the night, there seemed no earthly means of pulling India’s bowling effort out of its nose-dive.But then Pakistan blinked fatefully, and their reign as World Champions began to unravel. Arsenal must axe "phenomenal" fan favourite who earns more than Trossard

The last few years have been transformational for Arsenal football club.

Mikel Arteta has taken a team that looked utterly hopeless and destined for years of underachieving and has guided them into back-to-back Premier League title races.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

The road to this point has been paved with new signings and littered with discarded old ones, and while the squad is significantly better today than even two years ago, a few players need to be let go, one of whom is earning more than Leandro Trossard.

Aaron Ramsdale's Arsenal career

The player in question is goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who signed for the Gunners from Sheffield United in 2021 for around £30m.

At the time, this raised a lot of eyebrows as the Englishman had just been relegated with the Blades and Bernd Leno was seen as a reliable pair of hands at the Emirates.

However, it didn't take long for others to see what Arteta and Edu Gaspar saw in the Chesterton-born ace as not long into his first season with the North Londoners, the "phenomenal" shotstopper, as described by former Arsenal keeper David Seaman, was putting in brilliant performances, with his display away to Leicester City a clear highlight in his early career.

By the end of the 2021/22 campaign, it was blindingly obvious that the 25-year-old was good enough to be Arsenal's number one keeper going forward. Throughout most of last season, he continued to show that, with his performance at Anfield being another standout moment for him, notably making a number of jaw-dropping saves late on.

However, the key word there is 'most' as there were a few worrying signs from the 6 foot 2 titan as well, such as at home against Southampton, when he was entirely to blame for the Saints' opening goal and, therefore, ultimately cost the team two points in a period in which the team was slipping further from the title.

With doubts about Ramsdale's ability to cope with a title challenge starting to creep in, Arteta made the surprise decision to bring in David Raya from Brentford last summer.

While the Spaniard told the media that he did not consider either keeper to be number one, it was very quickly apparent that his compatriot would be starting for most of the season, and so far, Ramsdale has only made 11 appearances, while Raya has made 40.

Overall, the Englishman's time as the number one keeper is clearly up, and given his significant wages, he simply has to be moved on in the summer.

Aaron Ramsdale's wages at Arsenal

According to Capology, Ramsdale earns around £120k-per-week at the Emirates, making him the highest-paid backup goalkeeper out of the traditional 'big six'.

Although, closer to home, he is also earning £30k-per-week more than Leandro Trossard, who currently makes £90k-per-week.

Now, while the Belgian can't really complain about the amount he is making, it does seem odd that he is earning so much less than the man who has effectively become the club's backup keeper, especially when he has been so effective for the club since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion last year.

In all, the former Seagulls ace has scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in 67 games for the North Londoners so far in his career and in the last couple of months he has become a crucial player in Arteta's preferred starting lineup.

Ultimately, while Ramsdale deserves a lot of praise for the two seasons he regularly started at Arsenal, the fact that he has clearly fallen down the pecking order while maintaining his lofty wages is the reason he should be moved on in the summer, even if he is still a well-loved player.

St Lucia show-stopper gives Mark Wood confidence for West Indies rematch

‘Friendly rivalry’ with Jofra Archer could propel England’s pace attack to new heights, says quick

Andrew Miller24-Jun-2020

Mark Wood walks off with the match ball after his five-wicket haul•Associated Press

Mark Wood believes that he turned a corner in his career when he last faced West Indies in a Test match, at St Lucia in February 2019, and says that the memories of his command performance in that contest could have a bearing when the two teams meet again at the Ageas Bowl next month. After an injury-plagued start to his Test career, Wood had not even been a part of England’s plans for the Caribbean 18 months ago, but was called up from the England Lions tour of Australia when Olly Stone succumbed to a stress fracture in the first week of the tour. And though he played no part in England’s two series-losing defeats at Barbados and Antigua, Wood made up for lost time in startling fashion at the Daren Sammy Ground, unveiling a new more grooved run-up to reach speeds in excess of 95mph and claim his maiden Test five-wicket haul. And though a side strain sustained in the World Cup final ruled Wood out of last summer’s Ashes, he proved that St Lucia performance was no one-off with another ferocious display against South Africa at Johannesburg in January, where he sealed England’s 3-1 series win with his second Player-of-the-Match performance in three Tests.””It really gave me confidence going forward into the World Cup and into South Africa so, yes, it probably was my consistent quickest,” Wood said of the St Lucia spell, in which he claimed four wickets in the space of 23 deliveries on the second afternoon of the match. “I felt in a great place, mentally and physically and I still look back on that performance with fond memories.ALSO READ: England attack is best since 2005 – Darren Gough”I wish I’d changed my run-up sooner,” he added, having previously employed a long-jumper’s sprint-start that put undue pressure on his joints. “That one five-wicket haul, that gave me a massive boost. It sort of calmed me down, where I’m not trying too hard. I had the belief before, but I was frustrated I had not showed people how good I could be, and to get that five-for really allowed me to kick on.West Indies dished out plenty of chin music of their own in sealing their series win, not least through Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph and Shannon Gabriel, who looks set to be drafted into the full squad after recovering from an ankle injury. But Wood’s pace topped the lot, and just as he recalled the discussions about Mitchell Johnson in the England dressing-room ahead of his maiden Ashes series in 2015, so he expects Jason Holder’s men to have his performance firmly in their thoughts this summer.”I think it’s natural,” said Wood. “We had a big chat [about Johnson] before the 2015 Ashes so in a way, it’s actually quite nice to think they might do that about me, though it’s a bit weird. It proves that they do rate me as a cricketer and they are I concerned about what I could bring.”It does give me confidence as a bowler knowing you’ve done well against that team. I think that is normal in any work environment; if you’ve done well previously, you thrive off that experience and use it to your advantage. That’s what I’ll be trying to do again if I’m selected.”The fastest England bowler of them all? Darren Gough thinks so•Getty Images

However, Wood might not be the only 95mph bowler lining up against West Indies this summer. It was Jofra Archer’s elbow injury that gave him his opportunity in South Africa earlier this year, and now that Archer has reported a clean bill of health, there’s every chance that the pair could be united in a Test attack that Darren Gough believes could be England’s best since the 2005 Ashes.”It’s a hell of a comment from Goughie – I love that,” said Wood. “I feel like 2005 is the top of the top. I wouldn’t put myself in that [group]. I remember watching that series as a kid and was blown away by how good that line-up was. Then again, when you think about Jimmy [Anderson] and Broady, they’re going to be the best legends of the fast-bowling department England’s ever had, so when you put them two amongst everyone else – Jofra’s as exciting as they come, you’ve got Stokesy the great all-rounder – he might not be far off.”The prospect of Wood and Archer bowling in tandem in a Test match may not yet have come to pass, but it became a regular feature of England’s 2019 World Cup triumph, and Wood admitted that the desire to outdo one another in the pace stakes was a key feature of their “friendly rivalry”.”I cannot speak for Jofra but I definitely want to be quicker than him and I’m sure he wants to be quicker than me,” Wood said. “Especially in the World Cup, he used to joke about it all the time that they were putting my speeds up higher deliberately. If we were to play together it would be exciting. “I don’t know how it’s going to work, whether we’ll dip in and out to keep each other fresh and stuff. But it’s not a bad rivalry, it’s a friendly rivalry. Now I want to bowl fast all the time to prove that I can bowl as fast as Jofra. I would say he’s probably quicker than I am, and certainly makes it look a lot easier than me, so I want to prove that I can be as fast as Jof and that friendly rivalry does spur you on to be a better cricketer.”For the time being, however, Wood’s primary focus is getting his head around the new normal of England’s locked-down training camp at the Ageas Bowl, where their 30-man squad will live, train and play for the next three weeks until decamping to Emirates Old Trafford for the second Test.”It is slightly weird,” Wood admitted. “It is a bit like a sci-fi movie. Everybody is masked up, so you don’t know whether they are friendly or not. Some people scowl more than you think. It is something we will have to get used to.”Meals, he admitted, were a particularly strange event at the moment. “You have to follow arrows and feet marks everywhere, then you go to the tables which are sporadically spaced out. It’s a bit like when I was at school and you do a test with your individual table – apart from there’s nobody scribbling on the table like I used to. This morning I had breakfast and looked at the back of Jos’ [Buttler’s] head.”Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week works with the charity Chance to Shine to support and grow the grassroots of the game in schools and communities. £120,000-a-week Premier League star is Arteta’s dream signing for Arsenal

An interesting claim this week has shared that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is personally a "massive, massive fan" of one player, and would be his top signing for the north Londoners above all others.

Arsenal eyeing four key signings as Edu plots shakeup

Sporting director Edu and the Gunners board are said to be plotting a few key additions this summer, in the form of a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward (Simon Collings).

Journalist says £30 million Arsenal player is destined to leave this summer

A few squad members could also depart Hale End, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Aaron Ramsdale and Thomas Partey to name a few.

Arteta would need replacements for some of the aforementioned crop if they're to depart. Exits for the likes of Jesus and Nketiah, who stand out as Arsenal's only senior natural striking options, would leave Arsenal with a serious lack of depth up front.

Kai Havertz has shone in a makeshift forward role under Arteta this season, but it is believed that Arsenal want to sign an important new centre-forward who can guarantee them a flurry of goals.

"It's no great secret that Arsenal want to sign a striker this summer. When the window opens it will be the priority, along with a midfielder and potentially another wide attacker," said reliable journalist Charles Watts back in March.

"It will be interesting to see whether they move for Victor Osimhen. He, like Toney, is a player they like and I know that his representatives have visited Arsenal's training ground for talks with Edu. Those talks took place in the summer when Arsenal eventually signed Gabriel Jesus. Jesus was always the priority that year, but Osimhen was definitely a player they viewed as a serious alternative.

"That interest will remain, but the Nigerian could prove to be too costly an option in a summer given Arsenal want to spread their budget around as they look to take the squad to the next level."

As well as Osimhen, another player to be linked is Newcastle United star Alexander Isak. The £120,000-per-week Swede was Eddie Howe's star player over 2023/2024, bagging 21 goals in 30 appearances, and Arteta is said to be a real admirer.

Alexander Isak is Arteta's dream signing for Arsenal

As relayed by Inside Arsenal (via TBR), an apparent insider, Team News and Ticks, says Arteta would want to sign Isak for Arsenal above everyone else.

“I really don’t expect it to happen," said TNT.

"But it will come from that Arteta is a massive, massive fan. He’s one that if Arteta sees that if he could get one player, and we only had to sign one player, it would be Isak. He loves him, and he sees so many different roles and how he could evolve at us in so many different ways.”
