Chelsea refuse to rule out bid for cheap Toney and Osimhen alternative

Chelsea have reportedly refused to rule out a summer move for one striker who could prove to be a very cheap alternative to Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen.

Pochettino under pressure as Chelsea set sights on new forward

Mauricio Pochettino's side are enduring a regrettable season domestically after spending over £400 million on new signings last summer, with their head coach bearing a lot of the backlash.

£210,000-per-week star packs his bags with Chelsea favourites to sign him

He’s ready to fly to England.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 21, 2024

The Argentine has been jeered by supporters on more than one occasion over 2023/2024, with Chelsea looking likely to miss out on European qualification as things stand and are currently languishing in midtable.

They were also labelled the "billion-pound bottlejobs" by Gary Neville after losing the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool, and it would appear that their only shot of redemption this season is the FA Cup.

Chelsea's last six games under Pochettino in all competitions

Chelsea 4-2 Leicester City (FA Cup)

Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle United (Premier League)

Brentford 2-2 Chelsea (Premier League)

Chelsea 3-2 Leeds United (FA Cup)

Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool (Carabao Cup)

Pochettino is gearing up for an all-important FA Cup semi-final clash against Man City, which could go some way to determining the success of their campaign, but pressure currently surrounds the former Spurs boss.

There have been reports that Chelsea are weighing up managerial alternatives to Pochettino in the event they decide to part company, but whatever they decide, there are still glaring squad weaknesses which need to be addressed in the summer market.

One of them is at centre-forward, with the Blues arguably lacking a 25-plus goal-per-season striker who can take them to the next level. They've been linked with a few prestigious options, as the likes of Toney and Osimhen reportedly find themselves on Chelsea's target list.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

Osimhen's Napoli contract includes a £113 million release clause, making him the most expensive option, while Toney is being tipped to leave Brentford for around £60 million.

Chelsea may have to be wary of PSR and potential FFP breaches, though, as clubs around them continue to get sanctioned.

Chelsea refuse to rule out Callum Wilson bid

According to journalist Dean Jones, writing for Sportslens, a potential "good value deal" could be Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.

While the Englishman has suffered from injury problems this season, he was a key player for Eddie Howe over 2022/2023, and he could go on the cheap with his deal expiring next year.

Chelsea would not rule out the idea of a bid for Wilson in the summer, according to Jones, and it is believed he was actually open to joining them in the January window.

"Sources have confirmed that Chelsea do admire him and would not rule out the idea of a fresh move for Wilson, if they decide to consider cheaper alternatives in attack to Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney," wrote Jones.

"The player was said to be open to such a move in January."

Called "incredible" by Howe, the only sticking points are Wilson's worrying injury history recently and age – with the 32-year-old not exactly coming as a long-term option.

Chris Gayle says no to India ODIs, takes 'break' from cricket

The West Indies batsman wants to “recharge his batteries” in pursuit of clarity for 2020

Chris Gayle is not contemplating his future. He is planning it instead. Part of that plan is taking a “break” from cricket for the rest of 2019. Gayle will miss the ODIs against India in December after the selectors checked on his availability for the three-match series. Gayle will instead utilise the time to “recharge” and “reflect” on what he really wants in 2020.On Sunday, on his way out of the MSL where he was playing for defending champions Jozi Stars. Gayle opened up on the “burden” he feels when he does not perform. Gayle’s comments came in the wake of poor returns in this MSL: 101 runs from 6 innings including 54 on Sunday against Tswhane Spartans.Gayle made it evident that he was hurt by the constant scrutiny not just from the media but also from franchise, owners, team managements, coaches and players. But he is not giving up, Gayle made it clear that he wanted to sort things out and return in 2020 with a clear mind. That is what he told the West Indies selection panel which is headed by former allrounder Roger Harper. It is understood the squads for the India series comprising three T20s and three ODIs, have been finalised and will likely be announced this week by Cricket West Indies (CWI).It is also understood that when the selectors checked with Gayle on his availability for the ODI series in India, he shared with them his thoughts about the break. “West Indies called me to play ODIs, but I am not going to play,” Gayle said on Sunday during the media briefing after the Stars’ defeat. “They (selectors) want me to play with the youngsters but for this year I am going to take a break.”Gayle said he would not be playing the Big Bash, too, this season and was surprised that his name had been listed in one of the teams in the Bangladesh Premier League. “I am not going to the Big Bash. I’m not sure what cricket will come up, I don’t even know how my name reached the BPL, but I have been drafted in a team and I don’t even know how that happened.”It could not be confirmed whether Gayle is part of the T20 World Cup plans where West Indies are the defending champions. But both Harper’s panel and the team management comprising head coach Phil Simmons and Kieron Pollard, the ODI and T20 captain have stressed that the door is open to all players including the seniors like Gayle.Chris Gayle acknowledges the applause after bringing up his fifty•Getty Images

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo recently at the T10 tournament, Pollard said he was excited to have Gayle around him because of the “wealth of knowledge” the Jamaican has accrued from over more than two decades of playing across formats. “You have Chris Gayle who is still playing T20 cricket around the world,” Pollard said. “He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the T20 arena, 50-over, in Test cricket, so he can share a lot of that.”Gayle, who turned 40 in September, last played for West Indies in the home ODI series against India in August. Everything about that match had a farewell feel to it.Gayle had blasted 72 off 41 balls, helping West Indies record the highest 10-over score ever for a team batting first. The innings ended abruptly, but he walked off to a standing ovation from not just the sparsely filled Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain but also Virat Kohli’s India. Gayle, who had surpassed Brian Lara during the series to become the top ODI run-maker for West Indies, acknowledged the adulation by carrying his helmet atop his bat handle. He would lead the West Indies players out to the park later in the day to what everyone thought was one last time.Minutes later he was asked by the CWI media manager if he had retired from ODI cricket. “I didn’t announce any retirement,” Gayle said with a chuckle and when asked to elaborate, added “until you hear further notice.”With Gayle surprises never cease to end. In March, having waltzed to the fastest half-century by a West Indies batsman, he declared it would be his last ODI series in the Caribbean. In February he had already pointed out the ODI World Cup would be his final tournament. Except, on the eve of West Indies’ last match in that tournament, Gayle said he would like to play against India at home.He had another opportunity to play India, this time away, but he has it turned down because he feels he needs the time away from the game as he seeks clarity about his future.”I’m going to recharge my batteries and think ahead in life and try and plan it better and keep the people who are more real around you,” Gayle said on Sunday. “There’s a lot of things I am going to analyse. You never stop learning. Doesnt matter how long I have been playing. There’s a lot of things for me to give back. 2020 is just around the corner. I will use now and next month to reflect on what I really want for 2020.”West Indies’ next limited-overs assignment is the home series against Ireland in January comprising three ODis and three T20Is.

Rangers hit the jackpot on gem who’s now worth £10.7m less after leaving

Glasgow Rangers are now just eight wins away from securing their first Premiership title since the 2020/21 campaign.

Philippe Clement has overseen a remarkable turnaround from a club who were on the verge of a major crisis, to one that has a realistic chance at winning a domestic treble.

The Belgian has made the Light Blues a better team to watch, made them harder to beat and, more importantly, has inspired confidence among the players that they can overhaul Celtic in the title race.

Another positive aspect of his reign so far has been his impact in the transfer window. Previously, the Gers had struggled to obtain the correct sort of players in the January transfer window. Think back to the likes of Aaron Ramsey or Jack Simpson, players who struggled to make an impact during their spell at the club.

Three new arrivals joined the club, and the trio are all aged 22 or under, which suggests Clement could be going in a totally new direction with regard to future transfer business.

The Gers have trailed Celtic in this regard over the previous few years, as they tend to maximise their player trading model by buying low before selling high, giving them a greater financial reward.

Everton defender Nathan Patterson.

Rangers, on the other hand, have failed to really utilise this model since returning to the Premiership in 2016. Alongside Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey is perhaps the only player to have been sold for a fee which the club should be expecting from developing young talents.

How much Calvin Bassey cost Rangers

The summer of 2020 saw Steven Gerrard bolster his squad ahead of another tilt at winning the league title.

Ianis Hagi joined on a permanent deal, while Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten were signed in order to give the club something extra going forward.

Bassey, a talented left-back who was playing for Leicester City, was another new arrival, costing significantly less than the other three.

Indeed, the Gers only had to pay a compensation fee of around £230k due to cross-border rules, and it was a signing which Gerrard was hoping could play a big part at the club in the coming years.

It didn’t take him long to settle in at the Glasgow side.

Calvin Bassey’s statistics at Rangers

Borna Barisic was firmly established as the number-one choice at left-back when Bassey arrived, but the youngster was expected to provide support and cover whenever necessary.

The defender ended up featuring on 15 occasions throughout his debut season, contributing with one goal, and the future looked bright for Bassey.

The following season began with disappointment as the Gers failed to qualify for the Champions League, yet Bassey failed to see any action during the two matches.

Calvin Bassey at Rangers

It wasn’t until a defensive injury crisis, ruling out Leon Balogun and Filip Helander, that Bassey firmly established himself in the starting XI.

Over the course of the whole season, the Nigerian international ended up making 50 appearances in all competitions, grabbing six assists, while emerging as one of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s finest players.

He played in all but one of their Europa League clashes as the Ibrox side reached a historic final against Eintracht Frankfurt, suffering defeat on penalties.

Calvin Bassey

His stock had risen considerably throughout the season, showcasing his defensive abilities alongside Connor Goldson, and it was clear there would be potential suitors for his signature in the summer of 2022.

How much Rangers sold Calvin Bassey for

Despite coming so close to European success, Rangers only won the Scottish Cup during the 2021/22 campaign, meaning Van Bronckhorst had to recruit well in the transfer window.

He made several signings, yet the majority of these were funded by the sale of Bassey, who ended up moving to Ajax following his stunning season on a personal note.

The Dutch giants ended up splashing out a transfer fee just under £23m to bring the defender to Amsterdam, with the sale proving to be the club’s record departure.

It appears to have been a stroke of genius by the club, as Bassey’s market value has decreased significantly since moving abroad to join Ajax.

Calvin Bassey’s current market value

On the surface, it was clear that Ajax overpaid to sign the defender two years ago, as his value at the time was a paltry €1.1m (£1m), certainly proving the notion that the Gers struck gold on the player.

Calvin Bassey

According to Football Transfers, Bassey is valued at €14.4m (£12.3m) at the time of writing, which is £10.7m less than the £23m fee which took him to the Netherlands in 2022.

The “explosive” brute – as so dubbed by Steve Beaglehole, his U23 coach at Leicester – did not enjoy the greatest of spells abroad, it's fair to say.

He started just 20 league matches for the Eredivisie side before joining Fulham last summer in a deal worth £18.2m, meaning Ajax recouped nearly their original outlay.

So far this term, the left-back has played 21 Premier League matches, even scoring once, during a wonderful 2-1 win against Manchester United in February.

It looks as though the English top flight suits him more, and it proves his spell at Ajax was just a blip, as the 24-year-old is a wonderful defender, as demonstrated during his two seasons at Rangers.

Clement will be hoping that he can attract young talent similar in stature to Bassey with the intent of selling them on for a major profit further down the line.

Indeed, Mohamed Diomande, a £4.3m capture during the January transfer window, certainly fits the bill with regard to a player trading model.

The 22-year-old has already demonstrated his abilities in Scotland during his short spell so far, and if he continues to improve at a rapid rate, there will be plenty of suitors showing interest.

Rangers hit the jackpot on a player Alex McLeish sold in 2002…

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 31, 2024

While the club won't want to move on every player who shows promise, the key is to maximise potential profit, which, in turn, will allow the manager the chance to purchase more players.

Selling Bassey enabled Rangers to splurge on a few players, indicating that they hit the jackpot by moving him on for such a big fee.

Kane Williamson's resolve tested in heat of Australian battle

The home side have again been able to keep the opposition low on runs and under pressure

Andrew McGlashan30-Dec-2019It has been a tough season for visiting captains to Australia against a dominant bowling attack. Between them, Kane Williamson and Azhar Ali have scored 119 runs in eight innings. It is not the only reason the home side are on the verge of a summer clean sweep, but it’s a big part of it.Williamson has one Test left, at the SCG, to turn the numbers around in what has been a series to forget. Some of the problems have been out of his control (injuries to Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson and the shot selection of some of his top order) but his captaincy has been under the microscope and the runs, that so often come in a torrent, have turned into a trickle.ALSO READ: McCullum counsels Williamson amid New Zealand strugglesOn another day the lbw decision in the second innings in Melbourne – that was shown to just be clipping the top of leg stump – would have gone his way, but such is the game in tough times. After a promising start to the first innings in Perth he fell to a spectacular catch at second slip by Steven Smith then gloved the first ball from Nathan Lyon to short leg in the second. His dismissal in the first innings at the MCG, a skewed top-edge pull, was one of more un-Williamson-like shots you will see.Former captain Brendon McCullum was critical of Williamson during the second Test although made the point of having a one-on-one conversation with him.”It’s not just Kane. Many of our players have had a pretty tough time over here and that’s the pressure that gets put on,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “You saw his dismissal it was pretty unlucky, and on another day it can be given not out and he carries on and could have got a hundred.”Kane is fine. Like all players you go through ups and downs and some times are more challenging. This is obviously a challenging part of his career, as it is with all players.”Kane Williamson walks off after his dismissal•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

For Australia it has been a case of a plan very much coming together. “It’s one of the things we most talk about in our strategy, make sure we keep the opposition captain under pressure so we are doing that at the moment,” coach Justin Langer told Cricket 360. “He’s a very, very good player, one of the gentlemen of the game, so if we can do that for the rest of the series it gives us a big advantage.”There has been an acknowledgment in recent years that Williamson, who captains across all formats, needs his workload managing. After this tour, New Zealand have a full visit by India before returning to Australia for ODIs then hosting them for T20Is to complete the season. Williamson missed the T20I series against England in November due to a hip problem but has also sat out the occasional match, although with the T20 World Cup less than a year away that will be a tricky balancing act. “Everything is always up for discussion and it’s always healthy to debate,” Stead said.In terms of the immediate prospects for the Sydney Test, New Zealand’s batsmen were given a template of how they can succeed from the unlikely source of makeshift opener Tom Blundell whose second Test century – following his debut hundred against West Indies when he was the wicketkeeper – was a stirring display for the embattled team.”The way he went about crafting his innings was exceptional in only his third test match, and first as an opener, showed the way that we have to find more from our guys,” Stead said. “He’s sat on the sidelines the last couple of series but you can see the improvements that are being made. It’s fantastic for him and our team that he showed the capabilities are there for us to perform against a great Australian team.”As far as how the squad as a whole is managing after two crushing defeats in a series that started with such high expectations for a side that had reached No. 2 in the world, Stead said team spirit remained intact and paid tribute to the vast numbers of travelling supporters who cheered them to the end at the MCG.”We were obviously beaten up a wee bit by Australia again. I want to acknowledge how well they played; we’re up against a quality team at the very top of their game. We’re a tight knit bunch and it’s not the first time we’ve been beaten and won’t be the last. Our ethos is about trying to find small improvements, day in and day out.”In my time involved in cricket in New Zealand I’m not sure I’ve ever seen or experienced anything like that. Our players acknowledged the crowd at the end, and if we could replicate that at every test ground…it felt like the Barmy Army that lifts England. Hearty congratulations to those people who got out and kept supporting us. When times were tough they kept singing and chanting and it was pretty special.”

Ange hands Tottenham employees transfer mission now star could leave

Postecoglou has gave clear instructions ahead of the summer window.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 11, 2024

The riches of European football, and pull that would have for star players in the transfer market, cannot be understated. Sealing a place in next season's Champions League group stage pot would be the cherry on top of a positive debut campaign for manager Ange Postecoglou, but that isn't the view of the man himself.

“I don’t think top four is the ambition," said Postecoglou on Spurs' European hopes.

I get that top four means Champions League football, so there is a reward there, and that’s a significant reward and something you should strive for. My position on it is not so much, particularly this year, where we finish, it’s what kind of team we are, because if we finish fourth and we’re 25 points off the top, I’m not sure that’s the kind of trajectory we want to be on.

“It’s part of making sure that we’re all focussed on what the ultimate ambition is. If we finish fourth this year, what it does show is that we’re progressing and we’ve made improvements, but that’s not the end goal. That’s why, for me, it’s much more important how we play between now and the end of the year, and how we finish. Then, we assess things. If we finish fourth and I feel we’ve made some progress and we’re set up for next year, then I’ll be pleased with that.”

Nevertheless, the fact they're contending is very impressive when factoring in the loss of club-record goalscorer and all-round legend Harry Kane. Tottenham are planning to sign an A-list Kane replacement, but it's arguable nobody will ever truly replicate his influence.

Harry Kane celebrates for Bayern Munich

The England star made a multi-million pound move to Bayern Munich last summer after Levy opted to sell, with Kane entering the final stages of his contract at the time. The 30-year-old has gone on to bag 39 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, but is unfortunate to be missing out on a Bundesliga title as Bayer Leverkusen take pole position by miles.

Gabriel Jesus praises Kane after Tottenham sale

Speaking to the press (via BBC), Arsenal striker Jesus says Kane is "one of the best" around after Tottenham opted to part company.

"Everyone here knows the quality of Harry Kane – for me, personally, he is the best finisher in the world," said Jesus.

"He can finish with head, left foot, right foot – the guy, since I arrived in Europe, is one of the best. It's great to play against this kind of player. Obviously we want to keep him quiet and then we try to win the game.

"But it is not just Harry Kane – they have players like my old friend Sane, Musiala, Coman, Muller, Gnabry. They have quality players there."
