'It is not in my hands' – Kishan not thinking about T20 World Cup selection

Moody: Kishan is getting his career back on track

Having returned to competitive cricket after a break for personal reasons, Ishan Kishan is not thinking about his spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad.Kishan, who last played for India in November, had asked for a break during the South Africa tour in December-January. He returned to action in February during the DY Patil T20 Cup. Currently, he is the leading run-scorer for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 with a tally of 161 at a strike rate of 182.95.”About the World Cup, it is not in my hands and I am taking things very easy right now,” he said on Thursday, after starring with a 34-ball 69 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru to help Mumbai win by seven wickets. “You have to take one match at a time. One needs to understand that a lot is not in the hands of the players.Related

“It [the IPL] is a long big tournament and you do not want to overstep. I am just taking one game at a time and [my motto is] however I can help the team, let’s do it.Talking about his time away from the game, Kishan said: “I was practising [during the break]. When you take a break, people gossip about it a lot, they say a lot of things on social media. But I feel it’s important to understand not everything is in players’ hands. We can only make the best use of the break. This is what adopting a good mindset is.”Kishan, along with Shreyas Iyer, was not considered for the BCCI central contract for the period between October 2023 and September 2024. However, Kishan is not thinking about proving a point to anyone.Ishan Kishan smashed a 23-ball fifty against RCB•Associated Press”There is nothing like that [that] I want to prove to someone,” he said. “I just have to go there and enjoy. I have learned that you do not have to add pressure on yourself about these things, which are not in your hand. You have to figure out what are [your] controllables and what are [your] uncontrollables.”If I were the old Ishan Kishan, I might not have left the good deliveries in the first two overs [against RCB]. I would have been in pressure. But with time I have learned that even 20 overs are a lot and you can take your time. You can have the belief and move forward. So all these things helped me in that break also. Now we lost some games here, but I feel most of the players, not just me, were keen to work with everyone. It was never about us individually performing well for the team and not knowing what other players were going through. So I also know if someone is not doing well, how they feel.”So these things also changed in me that even when I am not performing, if I know someone isn’t feeling good, let’s talk to them, let’s know what their mindset is. So these things have happened after that break.” Hardik ‘loves challenges’, fans ‘will start loving him’Hardik Pandya might have been at the receiving end of fans’ ire in this IPL, but Kishan has little doubt that the Mumbai captain is “enjoying the challenge” of winning them over.Hardik, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain before the start of this IPL, has been consistently getting booed by the fans and the situation was no different on Thursday night at the Wankhede.”He [Hardik] loves challenges, he has been in this situation before and he is in that situation right now,” Kishan said.” He is not someone who will come out and talk about it and say let’s stop this or that. I know that he must be enjoying it. I know him personally. I have spent a lot of time with him. He is ready for the challenges because you cannot complain to the fans, they will come up with their explanations and their point of view.”Kishan said Hardik could turn around fans’ anger with his performances.”Knowing how Hardik Pandya thinks, he is happy with people doing it but I know that in the coming games, he will do it with the bat and people will start loving him [again]. People also recognise your hard work, what you are going through and still you are doing so well for your team.”Our fans will be a little harsh on you but at the same time when you do well, or when you show that it is [still] not bothering you and [that] you are in a good headspace, that might change. If not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, the day after tomorrow.”

WHY HAVE THEY BEEN NOMINATED?

Barcelona sensation Yamal, who recently turned 18 and inherited Lionel Messi’s old No.10 shirt in Catalunya, helped the Blaugrana to La Liga and Copa del Rey titles in 2024-25.

France international Doue starred for PSG as they captured a historic Champions League crown, with Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves one of his club colleagues at Parc des Princes.

Myles Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a breakthrough year at Arsenal, while also making his senior England debut, and will be joined in the Premier League for the 2025-26 campaign by exciting Brazilian starlet Estevao – who has completed a big-money transfer to Chelsea.

In the women’s game, Agyemang is one of the five nominees after playing a super-sub role for England in their Euro 2025 triumph. The Arsenal-owned forward netted a couple of crucial goals there and was named Young Player of the Tournament.

Santner on T20 World Cup prep: It's been a chaotic kind of start

New Zealand opted against warm-up matches because of the staggered arrival of their players

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jun-2024Mitchell Santner conceded that New Zealand have had a “chaotic start” to the T20 World Cup 2024. The team opted for extra training sessions instead of an official warm-up game due to logistics issues, with players arriving in three batches because of IPL commitments. However, after a few days of training in Trinidad, Santner said New Zealand can “really settle in” now, having moved to Guyana, where they will be playing their opening group match against Afghanistan on June 8.”It’s been a chaotic kind of start with people coming in at different times,” Santner said. “It was nice to get home for a few days before travelling with the team to come over here, had a nice little time in Trinidad. One training kind of got rained out. But we are here now in Guyana, a good week or so to get some good prep done for our first game.”They always put on a good party in the West Indies. I guess not having any warm-up games and guys coming in at different times, it kind of felt a little distorted. We are here in Guyana, we can really settle in with the tournament starting tomorrow. We can watch a little bit of start and then see what the pitches are going to do, especially in Guyana, and do our prep accordingly for our first game.”The World Cup is being played across nine venues – in the Caribbean and the USA – with New Zealand scheduled to play one of their Group C matches in Guyana and three in Tarouba. Up against opponents such as Uganda and Papua New Guinea, apart from West Indies and Afghanistan, Santner felt there was a little bit of the “unknown” about the competition.Related

The T20 World Cup is coming to America… but is America aware?

“It’s obviously good to watch [the first few games]. I think that’s going to be a common theme in the World Cup, you know, different places will play very differently,” he said. “Traditionally, Guyana can be a little bit slow and Trinidad can be pretty good. America is going to be different. So teams have to assess and adapt quickly throughout the whole tournament.”It’s going to be massive. There is a little bit of an unknown with some of these teams. We obviously know what West Indies are capable of doing, but we are not really sure of the other guys. There will be a bit of prep going into each game, scouting, video stuff of what we can get and we just have to stick to what we want to do throughout the whole tournament – every game assess, adapt and the things we talk about leading into each game which is going to be massive.”That apart, New Zealand are relying on their experienced players, including Kane Williamson, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, and Ish Sodhi who have played in the Caribbean Premier League, to pool in the knowledge of the conditions.”As a squad, we have guys who played a lot,” Santner said, “And then there are few guys who know these conditions. Glenn has played a lot of CPL and a few other boys as well. Channelling that kind of information is going to be big to hit the ground running.”

Rasmus Hojlund's DAD gets involved in Man Utd exit saga amid AC Milan interest as Premier League season nears

Reports in Italy have suggested that Manchester United's exiled striker Rasmus Hojlund is now open to leaving Manchester United this summer after having earlier been against leaving Old Trafford. Goncalo Ramos says he's staying at PSG after UEFA Super Cup heroics despite Newcastle and Saudi Arabia interest

Ramos scores late equaliser against SpursPSG win first European Super Cup on pensStriker ends exit rumours with clear statementFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

PSG won their first Super Cup in a scenario that seemed beyond their control, before Ramos came off the bench to score a late equaliser as the French side overturned a 0–2 deficit before winning 3-2 on penalties. After the match, the saviour of the Parisian club made a decisive announcement about his future, confirming he will remain at the club this season.

Tottenham controlled the match for nearly 85 minutes, with PSG struggling to trouble the English defence. Then Luis Enrique introduced Ramos, and moments later, the Portuguese striker burst into the box to head home a powerful cross from Ousmane Dembele. A precise, crisp move right in stoppage time brought PSG level with Spurs at the very end of the match. Ramos then confidently slotted home his penalty in the shootout, confirming his decisive role in the final.

The Portuguese international played 22 Ligue 1 matches, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists last season. He had sent a direct message after the intense game that puts an end to the rumours of his departure. While interest from Newcastle and Saudi Arabia offered tempting alternatives, the 24-year-old insists he is fully focused on the club’s ambitions. His decision comes at a crucial moment for PSG, who are balancing domestic dominance with a renewed push for Champions League glory.

WHAT RAMOS SAID

Since his arrival in 2023 from Benfica, Ramos has often started big matches on the bench, a situation that could frustrate many players. But not this time. Speaking in the mixed zone, he first explained: "My entry? I'm ready when the team needs me. When I receive the ball like that, I score."

When asked about his future, he was clear: "Yes, I confirm that I am staying this season."

As for Ramos, his words carried more than just confirmation of his future; they reflected his determination to stand by the club and deliver whenever called upon.

'Arsenal win the Premier League with Eze' – Gunners legend Paul Merson tips his former side to finally end 22-year wait for title after agreeing to sign Crystal Palace star

Eberechi Eze is the missing link for Arsenal in their hunt for a first Premier League crown under Mikel Arteta, according to former Gunner Paul Merson.

Arsenal fans have rejoiced following the news of Eze's imminent move to the Emirates, when he had seemed destined to join bitter rivals Spurs. And former Arsenal winger Merson believes the England international will help Arteta land the Premier League title following a trio of second-place finishes.

Arsenal's hijacking of Tottenham's protracted bid to buy Eze has caused a massive stir, creating one of the biggest transfer dramas of this or any summer. He's earned himself instant Clock End cult hero-status in the manner of which he chose the red half of north London over the white. Barring any late issues, his first match for his new club could be against Liverpool.

WHAT MERSON SAID

Merson told : "Eze is a brilliant signing for Arsenal. It's a game-changer and a perfect fit. If Arsenal had let Spurs get him, I'd have had to question what the club was doing because he's a quality player. Arsenal struggle when teams come to the Emirates and put everyone behind the ball. Teams want to limit space Arsenal have to play in and they have struggled to break teams down with those tactics."

Eberechi Eze revealed an Arsenal legend who was his favourite player growing up as the Crystal Palace talisman prepares to complete a £67.5 million ($90m) transfer to the Emirates this weekend. Despite his early heartbreak, Eze never lost his passion for the Gunners. In fact, his love for the club only grew, with the 27-year-old revealing in an interview earlier this year that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry was his childhood hero.

"[Thierry] Henry was number one. Henry and Ronaldinho. Those were the two on YouTube you were watching," Eze told Sign Up – Into Football, back in January.

"These are the guys you grow up watching. They enjoy what they're doing, they love what they're doing, they have a passion for it, and that inspires. I feel like those have been the guys that I've looked up to for as long as I remember."

Alejandro Garnacho accused of 'sticking two fingers up' to Man Utd & only caring about copying Cristiano Ronaldo as ex-Red Devils star claims 'disrespectful' winger will 'alienate himself' again at Chelsea

Garnacho has swapped Manchester United for Chelsea this summer in a transfer worth £40 million ($54m). The winger left Old Trafford after manager Ruben Amorim made it clear he was not in his plans for the future. Garnacho had also been riling some sections of the support with his social media activity.

The 21-year-old will now be hoping he can make an impact at Chelsea and has already claimed he is joining "the best team in the world". Former Red Devils defender Paul Parker has not been impressed by Garnacho's behaviour, feeling he has been "disrespectful" towards United while caring only about copying his idol Cristiano Ronaldo, and has warned the youngster he could encounter more problems at Stamford Bridge.

WHAT PARKER SAID

He told mybettingsites.co.uk: "His conduct on and off the pitch was disrespectful. All he wanted to do was score a goal or have a near miss so he could act like Ronaldo. Now he's gone to a club where there’s a lot more ego. He will alienate himself or it’ll be a battle there. United fans backed him when he was going through things both on and off the field. His brother was tweeting things and they backed him and he said nothing. He’s stuck two fingers up at the club that nursed him."

Parker is not sure how Garnacho fits into Chelsea's team, and has also suggested that the winger was lucky to win the 2024 Puskas Award, adding: "I wonder how he gets into the Chelsea team. Does he start in a Champions League game or a big game against Arsenal or Liverpool? No. He’s not got great pace, he hasn’t got the technical ability to beat players unless they dive in. Chelsea are just overloading. They’ve given into the supermarket with one trolley and ended up needing two. I wonder how much football he gets there. He will have to take an incredible jump to do well there. It’s so disappointing that a young boy can behave like that. He’s living off a goal against Everton which came off his shin.”

Lucas Paqueta acquittal sees FA slammed for 'obvious flaw' in spot-fixing case against West Ham & Brazil star

The FA did not provide an independent assessment during Lucas Paqueta's spot-fixing case, claims an extensive report after the Brazilian was acquitted.

'Obvious flaw' in case claims reportHeavy criticism of FAPaqueta was cleared of the chargesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

As reported by , a 'damning' 314-page report has been submitted by the commission which looked into Paqueta's case after the West Ham star was charged with four counts of spot-fixing in May 2024, nearly a year after investigations into the charges began. The Brazil international has since been cleared of all charges but the controversy may not yet be over. The report claims that the FA's failure to provide an independent assessment of the betting data involved was an "obvious flaw".

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The report also claims that the FA contradicted the statements of its main witness, FA betting integrity investigator Tom Astley, leading the commission to believe that the FA "was not altogether certain what case it was presenting against the player".

The charges claimed that Paqueta deliberately picked up a yellow card in four Premier League matches between November 2022 and August 2023 for the financial gain of loved ones back in Brazil – charges that the 28-year-old was acquitted of. It is understood that the FA are not planning to appeal the verdict.

WHAT THE COMMISSION SAID

The commission's report continued: “The commission wishes to record its surprise that at the investigation stage of what were clearly serious matters… the FA were apparently not interested in what the player had to say, notwithstanding his stance, taken on advice, in the first interview."

Nick De Marco KC, who represented Paqueta, claimed on X that the report was “understood to be the longest sports-related judgment ever issued in the world, a reflection of how serious the case was, and the amount of evidence deployed in the biggest case in the FA’s history”.

It is not known whether Paqueta or the outcome of the legal procedure will be impacted by the commission's report. Considering the evidence presented during the hearings, which pointed towards the verdict of the player's innocence, it is more likely that the document aims to target the FA and its approach to such cases in the future. Nevertheless, it will not be pleasant reading for Paqueta or his family to see such criticism of a situation where his career was on the line.

Auction trends: Is there a need for speed in the IPL?

Four factors that could influence how the franchises spend their cash at the 2018 IPL player auction

Gaurav Sundararaman24-Jan-2018Are really fast bowlers worth the big bucks?
IPL teams often splurge on a bowler who is capable of consistently hitting speeds in excess of 140kph. But are such express bowlers really effective in Indian conditions? Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Chris Morris, Mitchell Starc – who had one good season – and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was effective largely only in Kolkata last season, none of the others have made an impact consistently. Bowlers like Adam Milne, Tymal Mills, Matt Henry, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Kyle Abbott, Kane Richardson, Mitchell Johnson, Sean Abbott, Varun Aaron and Chris Woakes – to make several – have failed to justify their high prices.Eden Gardens is the only pace-friendly venue in the IPL at the moment, so while it might make sense for Kolkata Knight Riders to invest in speed for their home games, the other franchises might do well to exercise restraint while bidding on high-speed bowlers. They could be purchased for smaller amounts and played largely in the few games when conditions call for the extra yard of pace. Shorter boundaries, batting-friendly pitches, bigger bats and night games have them rarer in the IPL.About half of IPL’s most consistent batsmen over the past three seasons have been retained by their franchises•ESPNcricinfo LtdSecond-season syndrome
Do you remember Swapnil Asnodkar, Paul Valthaty, Ashok Menaria and Sudeep Tyagi? They had one really good IPL season, and no others. One-season wonders are fairly common in the IPL and the challenge for the teams is to not get carried away by them in the auction. Historically, only a few players do well across two or three IPL seasons. Hardik Pandya had a great 2015 but a woeful 2016, and came back strongly in 2017. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer had a good 2015 and a poor 2016.Over the previous three IPLs, only ten international batsmen – AB de Villiers, Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Brendon McCullum, David Warner, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina – have scored in excess of 300 runs each season at a healthy average and strike rate. Similarly, only eight bowlers – Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dwayne Bravo, Axar Patel, Chris Morris, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohit Sharma, Sandeep Sharma and Yuzvendra Chahal) have been among the top wicket-takers list across all three seasons with good economy rates and strike rates. And though the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Washington Sundar and Ben Stokes did extremely well in 2017, history says that they might be hard pressed to have it as good in 2018. The franchises might want to watch out for that.Left-arm quicks have proven to be effective strike bowlers, but ill-suited to control the run flow in the IPL•ESPNcricinfo LtdLeft is right
Why did Tymal Mills get such a high bid – sold for $1.8 million – in the 2017 auction? Supply and demand. There aren’t that many left-arm quicks around internationally, and far fewer in Indian domestic cricket. Having a left-arm seamer who can swing the ball adds variety to the attack, especially because most Indian batsmen would not have faced too many quality left-armers in domestic cricket. As a result, these bowlers go for more money than others. Starc, McClenaghan and Mustafizur Rahman are some overseas success stories, while Ashish Nehra, Jaydev Unadkat and S Aravind have done well among the Indians.Data reveals that these fast bowlers are better used as wicket-taking options early on than to contain. Most left-arm pacers over the last three seasons have good strike-rates but only five have an economy below eight per over. Trent Boult, Mills, Mitchell Johnson and McClenaghan went for a lot of runs, while Aniket Choudhry, T Natarajan, RP Singh and Pradeep Sangwan failed. Franchises need to mindful of picking bowlers who are capable of providing the team with early breakthroughs, or at the back end with their variations.ESPNcricinfo LtdOverseas spinners
Unless they are Sunil Narine or Rashid Khan, overseas spinners have not had a major impact in the IPL. Only a handful have had match-winning performances in the league – a specialist overseas spinner has been Man of the Match in only 14 IPL matches. Narine won six of those awards, Shane Warne four, and Rashid Khan twice in his maiden season, which is a special performance.Apart from Imran Tahir – briefly in 2017 – no other overseas spinner has made any sort of impact consistently over the last few seasons. The likes of Adam Zampa, Ish Sodhi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Samuel Badree and Akila Dhananjaya are perhaps best suited as back-ups, rather than a first-choice overseas player. Franchises could choose to spend more prudently on overseas spinners, and pick up domestic spinners to do the job.
