Darwin Nunez and Liverpool still haven't figured each other out: Winners & losers from the Reds win over Fulham as Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to shine in midfield role

The Uruguayan showed flashes of promise in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp will want much more from his £64m man

It may not have been pretty, but Liverpool extended their winning streak to five matches with a 1-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield on Wednesday night. A debatable first-half penalty, converted by Mohamed Salah, was enough to consolidate Jurgen Klopp's side in fifth place in the Premier League, and keeps their slim chances of Champions League qualification alive.

Klopp was smiling at the end, though he may find plenty of reasons to grumble at the quality of his team's performance, particularly in the second half as Liverpool rode their luck amid a spirited Fulham onslaught.

Only the excellence of Alisson Becker and the wastefulness of Bobby Decordova-Reid prevented Marco Silva's men from leaving with a point, as Liverpool held on for their third straight Anfield win, each of them by a single-goal margin.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Sometimes a change is as good as a rest, and Alexander-Arnold has had both recently.

Left out of the Liverpool team at Chelsea at the beginning of April, when the England right-back returned it was in a new hybrid role, a full-back-cum-midfielder, tasked with covering the flank while dictating play in the middle.

A tough task, you'll agree, but Alexander-Arnold looks to be relishing his new directive. His passing range has always stood out, but of late it seems to have gone up a level. The switches of play and the whipped crosses are still there, but so are the first-time flicks round the corner, the drilled passes into the feet of his forwards and the short, simple, tempo-setting in the centre of the field.

He's brimming with confidence, and that has spread to his defending. He's been more aggressive, stronger in the challenge, better in the air. He was up against a tough customer here in Willian, Fulham's veteran Brazilian winger, but he more than held his own.

Alexander-Arnold won back possession 15 times on the night, more than anyone else on the field and more than double the tally of any Liverpool player. He had more touches (122), completed more passes (74), contested as many tackles (3) and had as many shots (3) as anyone else on the field.

In short, a complete performance from a player who is looking more complete by the week.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Darwin Nunez

The Kop chanted his name after two minutes when he closed down a Fulham defender, and then again when he drove forward to win a throw-in on the right wing soon after. They chanted his name when he steered a half chance wide in the second half, and even more when he left the field, seven minutes from the end of the 90. Nunez, Nunez, Nunez!

The Uruguayan is clearly a fans' favourite, but as his first season at Anfield draws to a close, it is fair to say that he and Liverpool are still figuring one another out.

This was Nunez's first start in a month, and while Klopp would declare himself satisfied with the former Benfica forward's performance in his post-match press conference, he too will know that improvement is needed if the 23-year-old is to do what the likes of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have done before him, and take the next step after a big-money switch to Merseyside.

Certainly, the potential is there. A return of 15 goals and five assists – the latest came here as he won the penalty from which Salah won the game – is far from poor for a debut season in a new league. Nunez's work-rate and whole-hearted style has already endeared him to supporters, and his power, speed and movement should enable him to develop further under Klopp, whose record when it comes young, promising forward players is little short of exceptional.

Right now, though, Nunez is not in Liverpool's best XI, and given the club paid an initial £64 million (£80m) to sign him last summer, that has to be a source of concern.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Alisson Becker

The glory may have belonged to Salah, again, but Liverpool owed this victory to their goalkeeper, again. Twice the Reds needed Alisson to stand firm, and twice the Brazilian delivered, denying his countryman, Carlos Vinicius, once in the first half and once in the second.

They were different saves, too, as Alisson flew high to his right to bat away Vinicius' 20-yard strike at the Kop End, before spreading himself bravely at the Fulham striker's feet as the Cottagers pushed for a late equaliser.

In a season in which standards have slipped at Anfield, the Reds' No.1 has continued to maintain his. Without him, where on earth would Klopp's side be?

LOSER: Liverpool's away form

If only every game was played at Anfield, eh?

Much has changed with regards to Liverpool this season, but their prodigious home form remains. They have taken 40 points from a possible 51 on home soil, the third-best record in the league behind Manchester City and Arsenal, and their only defeat remains that inexplicable loss to Leeds United back in October.

They have saved their best for the best and the biggest, you'd have to say. City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle and now Fulham have all been vanquished, and there were rousing fightbacks from two down against both Arsenal and Brighton.

In seven Anfield games against the Premier League's top 10 clubs, Liverpool have won five and drawn two. Encouraging, given they complete their home schedule against eighth-placed Brentford and seventh-placed Aston Villa.

The flip side, of course, is that their away form has been wretched, the ninth-best record in the division. Had it been even average, Liverpool would be safe and sound in a Champions League qualification place by now.

Gabriel Slonina, Andrey Santos & 20 wonderkids to watch at the 2023 Under-20 World Cup

The tournament has given birth to some future superstars of the game, and there are plenty of potential candidates to follow that path in 2023

Lionel Messi. Diego Maradona. Paul Pogba. Erling Haaland. All superstars of the game, and all players who won either the Golden Ball or the Golden Boot (or in Messi's case, both) at the Under-20 World Cup before going on to become household names.

The 2023 edition of the biggest global tournament outside of the senior World Cup will kick-off on Saturday in Argentina, with 24 teams vying for a title and the chance to say they lifted the one of the most prestigious trophies in the game for their country.

The build-up has been plagued by controversy. Argentina were only confirmed as hosts in March, after original choice Indonesia were stripped of the rights because of the potential for protests during the tournament.

A number of rows, meanwhile, have broken out between clubs and countries regarding whether certain players could be selected. With the tournament getting under way while the European season still has key fixtures to play out, some coaches are going to be without star names who they hoped would be able to lead them to glory in South America.

Manchester United and Argentina winger Alejandro Garnacho is perhaps the most high-profile absentee, while Chelsea and England midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is one of a number of players who will only join up with their national sides once the domestic campaign is complete.

Despite all that, a number of potential superstars will be on show, and GOAL has joined forces with NXGN to run through 20 players you won't want to miss:

Getty ImagesAndrey Santos (Brazil)

Chelsea paid £13 million to sign Andrey Santos in January, and though work permit issues meant that he was forced to return to Vasco da Gama on loan for the remainder of the English season, there is already excitement brewing at Stamford Bridge regarding the midfielder's potential.

The 19-year-old has been compared to Sergio Busquets in the past, but his all-round game is perhaps more well-rounded than the Barcelona legend, as showcased during January's U20 South American Championship, when Andrey finished as joint-top scorer with six goals as he captained Brazil to the title.

He will wear the armband again at the World Cup, as Brazil go in search of sixth success.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesYaser Asprilla (Colombia)

The latest talent to emerge from the Envigado academy that has developed a number of Colombia internationals, including James Rodriguez, Asprilla has already both played and scored for the senior national team.

Dropping back down to the U20s, the 19-year-old will be expected to lead from the front for the South American outfit, especially as one of their more experienced players.

A quick-footed attacking midfielder, Asprilla made 37 appearances for Watford in the Championship last season, as he impressed for the Hornets in his first taste of English football.

Getty ImagesTommaso Baldanzi (Italy)

An attacking midfielder with an eye for the spectacular, Baldanzi has enjoyed a breakout season in Serie A for Empoli, scoring four goals, including an already-famous winner against Inter at San Siro.

Voted the Primavera (U19) Player of the Year as he fired Empoli to the national title in 2021, Baldanzi has already trained with the senior Italy squad, and could well be on the move this summer.

The 20-year-old's agent has confirmed that a number of top Italian sides are tracking him, with Inter, AC Milan and Lazio among those said to be interested.

GettyCade Cowell (United States)

A pacey wide forward, Cowell has been making waves for the San Jose Earthquakes over the past couple of MLS seasons, and is expected to move to Europe in the not-too-distant future.

Barcelona were previously linked with the 19-year-old, while Juventus and AC Milan have been tipped to make moves at some point in 2023, and an impressive showing at the U20 World Cup could accelerate the process.

Cowell, who already has three senior caps for the Stars and Stripes, will be expected to provide the goals for the U.S. in Argentina, with excitement building over which of their players could emerge and eventually star at the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Sadio Mane, Paul Pogba & the 21 most disappointing signings of the 2022-23 European season – ranked

For every great signing, there are three bad ones. But which transfer went most badly wrong in Europe this season?

As more and more money gets pumped into the European game, clubs are getting better and better at flushing their transfer budgets down the toilet in the form of ill-judged signings. The 2022-23 campaign has been a particularly poor year in a recruitment sense across the continent.

It won't surprise you to hear that Premier League clubs were the worst offenders, but sides in Italy, Germany, Spain and beyond have all proved their incompetence in the transfer market in recent times, too.

Overpaying is not the only sin that has been committed by Europe's top clubs this season, though. There have also been failures in due diligence and scouting, with several signings clogging up a space in the squad when anyone with half an idea about football might have clocked that they weren't suited to that particular club.

Below, we've taken a look at this campaign's worst transfer offenders by ranking the 21 most disappointing signings in Europe…

Getty Images21Matt Doherty (Atletico Madrid, free)

Doherty never truly settled at Tottenham and who can blame him? Back in October, when Antonio Conte was asked why he wasn't selecting the Ireland international, he replied: "I am not stupid. I don't want to lose."

In January, Spurs agreed to cancel his contract so he could join Atletico Madrid, in a move he hoped would reignite his faltering career. Fellow ex-Spurs man Kieran Trippier enjoyed success in the Spanish capital, but Doherty has not followed suit. Overall, he's tasted just 16 minutes of La Liga football. Perhaps another contract termination is needed this summer.

AdvertisementPSG20Renato Sanches (Paris Saint-Germain, £13m)

Sanches' topsy-turvy career has continued this season. After rekindling his ailing career at Lille, helping Les Dogues secure a shock Ligue 1 title in 2021, he opted to return to Europe's top table by joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

It has proved to be an error of judgement, with the Euro 2016 Young Player of the Tournament struggling to break into the first team in another injury-plagued campaign. He could still emerge out of the other side of this latest setback, with PSG poised for another squad reset at the end of the season, but a loan move elsewhere could also be on the cards.

Getty Images.19Calvin Bassey (Ajax, £19m)

Ajax paid the second-highest fee in Eredivisie history to tempt Bassey away from Rangers, but he has ended the season sat on the bench following a string of questionable performances. It was rumoured that an unnamed Premier League club tabled a £20 million bid for the defender ($24.8m) with a view to him moving in the summer – which the Dutch giants rejected.

Wesley Sneijder doesn't buy it, though, saying recently: "I really don't believe any of that. I think what has happened is that Ajax want to take the pressure off themselves a bit having just lost the cup final too as well as their league standing. I am afraid it can't really be true that Ajax would seriously turn down such an offer for Calvin Bassey." Scathing stuff.

Getty18Divock Origi (AC Milan, free)

Origi traded cult-hero status at Anfield for a shot at a regular football in Milan. However, he's spent the majority of the season playing second fiddle to Olivier Giroud, desperately failing to find the back of the net and struggling for fitness.

Even accounting for a few niggling injuries, a goal tally of just two is nowhere near good enough for a player on his wages. The Rossoneri will surely be looking for an alternative Giroud successor this summer.

Sign a centre-back! Liverpool winners and losers as Darwin Nunez double fails to paper over the cracks in Jurgen Klopp's defence

The Reds showed impressive resilence to triumph at St James Park, but their backline just isn't good enough to sustain a title challenge

The quality of Darwin Nunez's finishing in Sunday's dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle came as a welcome surprise – but the dreadful nature of the visitors' defending was neither welcome nor a surprise. Pre-season offered a painful reminder of the brittle nature of the Reds' backline and the start of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign has only hammered home the fact reinforcement is required before the close of the transfer window.

During his pre-match press conference, manager Jurgen Klopp had looked visibly frustrated by a question over whether Liverpool had sufficient strength in depth at the back to sustain a title challenge, but it was made abundantly clear at St James' Park that the long-mooted arrival of a left-sided centre-back simply has to materialise next week – particularly now with Virgil van Dijk facing a suspension for a straight red card.

A solution also has to be found to the long-standing Trent Alexander-Arnold conundrum, with the right-back continuing to prove a liability in defence. Here, he gifted Anthony Gordon a goal that should have seen Newcastle go on to easily defeat a side that was reduced to 10 men just moments later.

That they did not is obviously testament to Liverpool's character, manager and No.9. However, while the celebrations that followed the full-time whistle were totally justified, Nunez's late double should not be allowed to paper over the cracks in Liverpool's defence.

For the second game in a row, the Reds have managed to recover from shooting themselves in the foot – but sooner or later they will be made to pay for their fragility and now regular lapses in concentration unless they "go for it", as Jamie Carragher put it on , in the final week of the summer transfer window.

Below, GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from St James' Park…

GettyWINNER: Darwin Nunez

Boy, did Nunez need this! Left on the bench again, it actually appeared unlikely for the majority of the game the Uruguayan would see any game time at all, given it was Diogo Jota that Klopp first turned to in a desperate bid to turn the game around. It was yet further confirmation that Nunez is effectively Liverpool's fifth-choice forward.

However, the No.9 got his chance to shine with just 13 minutes to go – and he made the absolutely most of it. Nunez has come in for a lot of criticism since arriving at Anfield, mainly because he has not looked like a £64 million striker on account of his horribly erratic finishing. Here, though, he took the two chances that came his way in the closing stages with aplomb, displaying the mix of precision and power that had people comparing Nunez to Erling Haaland this time last year.

The 24-year-old still has a hell of a long way to go to get to that level – excelling on a consistent basis was his principal problem last season and there's no actual guarantee that he will even start next week. But this deadly double will have done wonders for his confidence and might just have kick-started his Liverpool career.

Nunez, remember, had an average first season at Benfica before exploding into life in his second. Maybe history is about to repeat itself at Anfield…

AdvertisementGetty LOSER: Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool successfully appealed Alexis Mac Allister's red card from last week's win over Bournemouth – but there is absolutely no chance of them overturning Van Dijk's dismissal here. The Dutchman was at first stunned by his sending-off, and then irate. He stayed on the pitch for a good two minutes after the decision, and even after belatedly making his way towards the tunnel, he stopped to remonstrate with the fourth official. It was embarrassing – particularly in his role as Liverpool's captain.

Van Dijk's argument was obviously that he had taken the ball off Alexander Isak – but the fact of the matter was that he had only done so after sweeping the striker's right leg. It was a clear foul and, because of where the offence took place, a clear red card too.

Van Djik's rashness means that the Reds will now be without their best defender for next Sunday's visit of Aston Villa, which is unforgivable, really, given the fragile nature of the defence. The centre-back was delighted to take on the responsibility of captaining the club but, once he's calmed down, he must also be willing to take responsibility for a stupid sending-off – and his pathetic reaction to the red.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Jurgen Klopp

It's obvious that there's no love lost between Liverpool and Newcastle's respective coaching teams, so this stunning come-from-behind victory will taste particularly sweet for Klopp. However, he will be even prouder of the way in which he turned the game around with his substitutions.

Klopp never gave up on the game and made a number of positive moves during the second half. Indeed, it wasn't just about Nunez's double – he also injected some energy into an understandably tiring team by putting youngsters Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah on in place of Wataru Onda and Joel Matip. The introduction of Jota also saw Liverpool look threatening for the first time since before Van Dijk's dismissal.

The coup de grace, though, was obviously taking off a midfielder in Mac Allister and replacing him with a No.9. It was a bold, adventurous move – as was the decision to bring on inexperienced youngster Quansah – and it was rightly rewarded.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Eddie Howe

By complete contrast, Eddie Howe completely botched this game. His side had both a goal and numerical advantage for more than an hour of play – yet ended up taking nothing out of a match that was there for the taking. Sad to say, that is all on the manager, with Howe failing dismally to transmit any sense of urgency to his players as it became evident during the second half that Liverpool were growing in confidence.

None of his substitutions had any impact on the game, with even Howe himself admitting afterwards that he had erred in withdrawing Sandro Tonali and Gordon, who was terrorising Alexander-Arnold.

In that sense, Newcastle got exactly what they deserved, with Howe justly punished for his shameful lack of adventure and completely mis-reading the game. As Pat Nevin pointed out in commentary on , only one side went looking for all three points after Nunez's equaliser – and it wasn't the hosts, who appeared bizarrely happy with a point against a 10-man top-four rival.

Reports in his homeland have suggested that the Ligue 1 giants were prepared to do a deal with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal in the last transfer window as medical examinations hinted at more fitness problems being endured by the 31-year-old forward.

Neymar has responded to what he considers to be “fake news” when posting on social media: “The night goes by, the day goes by and things don’t change. There are accounts (like this one) that are not part of the player's daily life, they don't know what's really going on, but they post as if they were the guy in question. The Portuguese had already travelled to Munich and started taking pictures with the Bayern jersey before the deal was called off by Fulham due to their inability to sign a replacement. The German champions have been asked multiple times afterwards if they would still be interested in signing the 28-year-old, and they have always hinted that he remains a target.

After his attempt to join Bayern Munich failed, Palhinha ended up signing a new deal with Fulham, where he will remain until 2028 with a one-year option. If Bayern do end up trying to sign the Portuguese again, they will definitely have to shell out some extra cash for the midfielder, thanks to the contract extension.

WHAT PALHINHA SAID

When asked about a potential future move to Bayern ahead of Portugal's Euro qualifiers against Liechtenstein, Palhinha told: "I don’t know what will happen in the future. Obviously, it’s really affected me and my family, but that’s all in the past, I don’t want to think about it too much. It’s a great source of pride, you know what happened. In my life everything that has happened has been for a reason, I like to think of it like that,” said Palhinha, insisting there’s still a lot of time for him to shine."

He added: "The future will tell me whether what happened was really what had to happen or not, but only the future will show me that. I want to keep going the way I’ve been going, nobody has given me anything throughout my career, and everything I’ve achieved is down to my worth, my work. I hope it stays that way. I’m 28, but I know I can go higher and I’m looking to the future with that ambition."
