Mohammad Ramis Shah06-May-2002On 27 April 2002, during the third and final encounter of the three-match ODI series between Pakistan and New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, young Shoaib Malik fashioned a fine all-round performance to better his career best performance with both bat and ball. Opening the batting, the 20-year old made a superb 115 and later on took 3 wickets for 37 runs to write his name in the elite club of all-rounders scoring a century and also taking three or more wickets in the same match. It was actually the 11th such performance by the 9th player in the history of shorter version of the game, with Nathan Astle and Viv Richards doing so twice.Curiously enough, Shoaib who became the first Pakistani to do so, however also provided the 13th instance of a Pakistani scoring a fifty or more besides taking three or more wickets in the match too.For the interest of the readers here are more details:

Ex-Rangers ace shares inside Defoe info

Former Rangers star Graham Roberts insists that Jermain Defoe will stay at the club next season, because he told him he would personally.

The veteran forward has enjoyed something of an Indian summer since moving to the Scottish giants on a permanent basis in the summer following an initial loan spell at the club from Bournemouth.

He has scored seven goals in 20 games in all competitions at the age of 38, and helped the club to a spectacular unbeaten season as they won the Scottish Premiership title.

Defoe signed a one-year contract upon his arrival, but Roberts is confident that the ex-Spurs striker will stick around at Ibrox, having spoken to him personally before the north London side’s clash with Aston Villa.

Indeed, Defoe is said to be in “love” with the club and the country, and is set to extend his stay.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Roberts said: “I was with him on Wednesday. He was at the ground for the Aston Villa game, he was there, and I asked him about Rangers.

“He absolutely loves it up there. And with what he was telling me, I’m sure he’ll be back there.”

Defoe has made a total of 72 appearances for Rangers, scoring 32 goals and laying on 10 assists.

Celtic Transfer News: Hoops and Aston Villa battle for Josh King

Aston Villa have rivalled Celtic in their pursuit of free agent Joshua King, according to Norwegian publication VG.

The Lowdown: Celtic have a long standing interest in Joshua King

Undoubtedly, Celtic need major reinforcements after a bleak 2020/21 campaign. In particular, the striking berth may require redefining, in the midst of Odsonne Edouard’s prospective exit to Premier League side Leicester City [Sky Sports].

As previously mooted, Celtic have noted an interest in Norwegian international Josh King since early April [Daily Record].

Currently a free agent after leaving Premier League outfit Everton upon his contract expiration [Guardian], the 29-year-old is seeking pastures new after a 2020/21 tally of three goals and two assists in 25 appearances [Transfermarkt].

However, the Parkhead giants could now be set to miss out on the forward after recent developments.

The Latest: Aston Villa enter the race for the Norwegian international

Aston Villa are now rumoured to be in the race for his signature alongside the Celts and Premier League newcomers Norwich City [The Boot Room via VG].

Previously linked with a switch to the Villains last year, there will undoubtedly be considerable cause for concern amongst the Celtic support [Birmingham Live].

Despite this, the VG report still claims that Celtic are keen on bringing the former Manchester United frontman north of the border, which will come as a relief to the Hoops faithful.

The Verdict: Celtic should make King an offer he cannot refuse as interest ramps up

Without doubt, King would be a tremendous signing for Celtic should they manage to force a deal over the line.

Once labelled ‘talented’ by former team-mate Paul Robinson [Football Insider], the pacy Norwegian enjoyed prolonged success with Bournemouth in the Premier League; notching 53 goals and 19 assists from 184 outings on the South Coast [Transfermarkt].

Whoever ends up acquiring King, will inherit an international class player who has shown the credentials necessary to succeed at the top level. Celtic should do all they can to make the deal happen.

In other news, Celtic are linked with another prolific striker.

AAP10-Jul-2002Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist has been recognised by his international peers as the cricketer of the year.Gilchrist received the annual from the Federation of International Cricketers Association’s (FICA) award at the Dorchester Hotel in London today at a black-tie affair attended by more than 1,000 guests.Voted on by Test players from all nations, the award went to Gilchrist ahead of fellow finalists Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Jacques Kallis (South Africa), Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) and Matthew Hayden (Australia).Past winners of the award include Australian Test captain Steve Waugh and fast bowler Glenn McGrath, West Indian batsman Brian Lara and Zimbabwe’s wicketkeeper/batsman Andy Flower.Gilchrist scored three Test centuries last summer, including lightning-fast unbeaten knocks of 204 and 138 against South Africa. He has a Test average of 60 from 31 matches, with 122 catches and ten stumpings. The FICA award is not sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) or the Australian Cricket Board (ACB), but is regarded as a prestigious honour.

Robinson backs Wood to West Ham

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has raved over Burnley striker Chris Wood as West Ham United allegedly a swoop.

The Lowdown: Hammers links to Wood emerge…

The striker search has been well documented since club record signing Sebastien Haller departed the London Stadium in January.

After failing to sign a new forward in that window, West Ham have since been linked to a host of options – with the most prominent being Tammy Abraham, Youssef En-Nesyri, Adam Armstrong and Ivan Toney (ExWHUemployee).

Recently, however, links have emerged to Clarets forward Wood.

Indeed, Football Insider claimed last week that West Ham have now joined the race for his signature alongside Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Everton.

The Latest: Robinson raves over Wood…

Reacting to FI’s report, Robinson has raved over the prospect of West Ham signing Wood this summer and believes he would be a ‘great option’ and ‘fantastic signing’ for David Moyes.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-2/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“His record speaks for itself, his stats are incredible. He always scores goals,” explained the former Spurs keeper (via Football Insider).

“He is very fit and picks up barely any injuries and he scores goals on a regular basis. I think he’d be a great option for West Ham as much as I wouldn’t want to see him leave Burnley.

“Woody knows where the net is and he would score a lot of goals at West Ham. He would be a fantastic signing for them.

“I suspect Burnley would do everything they can to keep hold of him though. The way that West Ham play he would be the ideal signing.”

The Verdict: Great striker, but not for £30m…

As explained by Football Insider, it is understood that Burnley will demand at least £30m for the New Zealander’s signature.

Wood possesses obvious quality, which is evident through his 12-goal haul last season and impressive average of 2.1 shots on goal per 90 in the Premier League (WhoScored).

Only star West Ham man Michail Antonio (2.4) and 2020/2021 loan sensation Jesse Lingard (2.6) managed higher averages last year, but for that lofty price tag, he just isn’t worth it in our opinion.

At 29-years-old, the towering 6 foot 3 attacker will arguably only decline from here-on-in – with there being much younger and homegrown targets who could cost a similar amount.

Abraham, for instance, is widely reported to be valued at around £40m.

While that is still a heavy price to pay, the Irons would be getting a lot more value for their money given the Englishman is still only 23 and has bagged 21 top flight goals in 37 starts over the last two seasons (WhoScored).

Sheffield United: Paddy Kenny drops intriguing Blades verdict

Paddy Kenny has hinted that Sheffield United could sell key players Billy Sharp, Chris Basham and David McGoldrick before their contract expiration [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Sheffield United eye 2021/22 redemption

As Sheffield United look to bounce back after relegation from the Premier League last time out, they will need to keep the core of their side in order to breed consistency and understanding next season.

Important squad members Sander Berge and Oliver McBurnie have been linked to Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively in recent times.

However, ex-Bladesman Kenny believes that a different crop of the Sheffield United roster may depart, following the recent appointment of Slavisa Jokanovic last month [BBC].

The Latest: Kenny tips Jokanovic to sell the experienced trio

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, the 43-year-old discusses the prospect of new the new manager jettisoning Sharp, Basham and McGoldrick, who’s deals all come to an end in 2022.

Kenny stated:

“Is it worth cashing in? They’ll all be very good players in the Championship and hopefully play a massive role in getting them back to the Premier League.

“For me, they need to stay. But the manager might not think that, he might want his own players. We see that often so I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

“But I think it might be worth keeping them around for their experience when they’re going for promotion.” [Football Insider].

The Verdict: Difficult situation at Bramall Lane, could it be worth the risk?

There is certainly a worry over the trio’s contract situations.

On one hand, keeping the old heads who have previous experience earning promotion from the Sky Bet Championship is a massive positive for the Bramall Lane side.

Despite this, the Yorkshiremen face a complicated predicament from a financial standpoint.

Potentially losing all three players for free in 2022 would come as a crushing blow to Sheffield United, especially if they do not bounce straight back up this season, as they would not then have extra funds from top flight TV deals to replace the players adequately.

It may just be worth taking the hit if the trinity can fire the Blades back to the riches of top-flight football in 2021/22, but don’t be surprised to see a few familiar faces on their way out this summer.

In other news, a Sheffield United key man has been linked with a Premier League exit.

SEC Cup – First finalist confirmed as Bashley crush B.A.T.

Bashley (Rydal) have reached the final of the Southern Electric Contracting Cup and will play either South Wilts or Rowledge at the Hampshire Rose Bowl on Friday August 2, 5.45pm

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)17-Jul-2002Bashley (Rydal) have reached the final of the Southern Electric Contracting Cup and will play either South Wilts or Rowledge at the Hampshire Rose Bowl on Friday August 2, 5.45pm.Bashley beat BAT Sports by six wickets in the semi-final at Southern Gardens – the reigning Premier League champions crashing from 36-0 to 46-7 in an amazing mid-innings spell.Neil Taylor (5-10) clean bowled four batsmen after Michael Watson (24) and Richard Kenway (15) had provided a sound start.Terry Rawlins (22 not out), Richard Dibden (16) and Simon Preston (16 not out) rallied, but a score of 104-8 off 23 overs was never likely to be enough.Bashley batted consistently, with Luke Ronchi’s 36 not out leading the New Forest club to the final.Premier Division 2 club Rowledge beat Burridge by 50 runs in the weather delayed quarter-final.David Lloyd (52), Chris Yates junior (34) and Jeff Annings (27) led Rowledge to 152-6 before the Yates uncle and nephew combination sank Burridge for 102 (Roger Cawte 34).Chris senior grabbed 4-19 and his 21-year old nephew 3-28.

Burridge sling themselves lifeline with Calmore win

Burridge threw themselves a lifeline in the ECB Southern Electric Premier League relegation scrap with a timely 55-run win over Calmore Sports at Botley Road

Mike Vimpany11-Aug-2002Burridge threw themselves a lifeline in the ECB Southern Electric Premier League relegation scrap with a timely 55-run win over Calmore Sports at Botley Road.Although they remain stranded at the Division 1 basement, Burridge know that if they can win this Saturday’s crunch match at Liphook & Ripsley, they stand a fighting chance of survival.Liphook lost a rain-cut affair by 21 runs at Havant, but the seven bonus points they collected edged them above Calmore at the bottom.Burridge’s success was built around a solid start by Ian Williamson (46) and Paul Hawkins (25).Dave Jackson (30) carried on the good work, with Paul Ancell (30), Jo Dixon (23) and Matt Godwin (18) providing crucial middle-order contributions.Weakened by the absence of influential all-rounder James Hibberd, Calmore relied upon Clive Surry’s spell of 5-38 for their bowling successes.Surry sparkled with the bat as Calmore chased Burridge’s useful 225-9, which included 41 extras. But the Calmore all-rounder, who hit 51, lacked any substantial top order support. He saw three partners depart before Tom Pegler (26) and James Wall (33) provided some firm middle-order resistance.Ancell continued to chip away and finished with 5-28 as Calmore’s lower order gave way and the side slipped to 170 all out.The defeat heightened the end-of-season problems for Calmore, who play Bournemouth and Portsmouth before closing the season against table-topping BAT Sports at Loperwood Park.Liphook & Ripsley missed a great chance to haul themselves out of trouble with a poor display of batting after Havant’s 161-9 had been reduced to a 128-run target off 30 overs.Going nicely at 46-2, Liphook promptly lost six wickets for 13 runs – simply due to reckless batting."We should have taken a grip of the comfortable situation we got ourselves in. We only needed to play sensible cricket and tossed away a great chance of not only winning, but also pulling ourselves out of trouble," lamented skipper Duncan Berry. The game had already been reduced to 38 overs – in which Andy Perry (36) and Paul Gover (29) top scored in Havant’s 161-9 – when rain intervened again."We bowled and fielded very well and, needing 128 off 30 overs, got ourselves in the driving seat," Berry said.Chris Wright and Graham Tyler quickly perished, but Neil Randall (21) and Alistair Gray (17) eased Liphook into a useful position at 46-2.Then it all went hopelessly wrong, with the entire middle-order caving in to Havant’s two-pronged spin attack of Phil Loat (3-20) and Richard Hindley 3-36). Jeremy Bulled (20) dropped anchor while wickets tumbled around him."We got out to some poor shots – only to finish strongly, which made it even more annoying," Berry added.Liphook sank to 59-8 before Tim Wheatley (23 not out) applied some common sense to the cause and helped the visitors get an additional bonus point in the bag at 106-9.Havant’s 21-run win trimmed BAT’s lead at the top – the reigning champions having their scheduled home game with South Wilts at Southern Gardens called off.The other two matches between Bournemouth and Andover, and Portsmouth and Batley (Riddle) were also postponed.
